Concierto futurista: He visto volar. Tríptico para Boccioni. Unica función

April 28, 2010
7-9pm
Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires
Facebook

Entrada libre. Cupos limitados

99 USD, DNA day and patient letters

Yes,

Today started with my twitter feed notifying me that 23andMe had dropped their prices to 99 USD today. Which almost had me encouraging people to get testing, until I remembered that 23andSerge would then have your DNA..........FOREVER!

Then I opened my email and read this great note

"Dear Dr. Murphy,
Thank you so very much. I am so lucky to have found your team. Who would have thought my Plavix might not be working for me? Only when you told me about how it could not work did I realize that I might be taking something that is worthless. Thanks for testing me. Now that I am on Effient I feel much safer!

Thank you Dr. Murphy,
You saved my life!"

That's right. A genetic test, may have saved this patient from a heart attack. A genetic test I do regularly. Who has this patient's test result? Not some corporation that will use it for profit. No, just me, who will use it to act medically. While as these other services say explicitly, YOU CANNOT USE IT FOR MEDICINE!!

To be certain, you should not stop your Plavix WITHOUT talking to your doctor first!

Shame on them, their test could save a life. But not according to their TOS.

I will be speaking at the Consumer Genetic Show about precisely this problem and others. I was so surprised that they asked me to speak. Especially after the beating I gave it last year.

But on this DNA Day I am here to tell you, the public is aware now. DNA testing does hold promise, but only when in the right hands.........

The Sherpa Says: Pharmacogenomic testing IS MEDICINE. It is NOT FOR $H!T$ AND GIGGLES! Happy DNA Day!

Upscale Island Living

hopkins-island-florida-7If you are looking for a property in Florida a Private Island is guarenteed to eclipse mainland properties on everything from views to development opportunities.

One of the most luxurious properties currently on the market in Florida is Hopkins Island. This 12.5-acre property located near the popular Big Pine Key wows on all fronts. Located about 2.5 miles offshore, it rests in an upscale area between Long Beach Estates and the exclusive Little Palm Island Resort.

Only 25 minutes from Key West and easily reachable from Miami, this island estate not only offers seclusion but also convenient access to international airports. But what really sets Hopkins Island apart from its Keys companions are the conveniences you’ll find within its sandy terrain. Whether you choose an arrival by air or sea, Hopkins accommodates; an interior basin with extensive dock space provides a haven for boats away from waves and storms, while a grassy inland area has ample room for a few helicopters to land.

At the center of this island is a three-story, four-bedroom home that’s ready for a new owner—no construction necessary. The island is entirely self-sufficient—thanks to four new 24-volt Hawker Power Safes (hydrogen battery strings), charged by a series of photovoltaic solar panels and a backup generator. Rainwater storage is supported by a Saltwater RO system capable of producing 1,200 gallons daily.

For more information on this property visit Private Islands Online.

Top 4 Predatory Schemes Encroaching on American Medicine: Part 1

Medicare has cut its already low rates… or simply refuses to pay claims. Private insurance is increasingly not paying claims. Credit is not available to anybody, general operating expenses continue to rise, and all spending —especially individual spending— continues to fall.

Meanwhile, state and federal governments continue to “address” this “issue” by forcing new legislation and escalating enforcement —further compounding economic stress with abstruse legal liability.

Financial panic, plus denial, plus institutional instability, plus a confusing blob of new laws that nobody understands but supposed to be really scary and have impressive acronyms?

This here is Scam Season.

Home Health Care: “Healthcare” is now apparently both a “growth industry” and “recession proof,” and in “times like these,” you too can “control your own destiny by starting your own business in healthcare.” Just buy these books, attend these seminars, sign here here and here… and congratulations! You are not officially (empowered to be) a Healthcare Entrepreneur! Now… if only you could somehow clutter my office with your glossy trifold brochures with old people on them, you’ll be rich… wait, you did!? You win! The Economy!

Do the math: Free Money. From The Government. You can’t lose!

I think so far we’ve had four individual “new exciting firms” solicit our very small, very under-publicized medical office to… you know what? I’m not really sure what these people are selling. It’s something to do with old people and glossy brochures and old people on glossy brochures.

Yah, I do make it very awkward on purpose when you ask me to “exchange business cards,” and then when I pretend that you’re a patient who has confused an appointment? Yah, I know that you’re not really a patient. In fact, basically, everything out of my mouth will be rambling worthless nonsense until you dread even the suspicion that I could be in the office. (Also see: common responses to “can you fix my wireless Internet?” “Well, that depends.”)

Aside: I have bad news for you aspiring “healthcare entrepreneurs”: unless you can make diagnosis or prescribe drugs, I promise you, your “new career” is already obsolete because 1) computers do it 2) or your compensation scheme is already targeted for fraud by Medicare. Unless… you new career is selling “career opportunities.” That business seems to be booming.

Hospital-Sponsored-But-Independent-Seriously-Trust-Us Physician Organizations: the fad of Independent Physician Associations from two decades ago is back, but this time, it’s not your good buddies the HMOs, it’s your friendly local medical conglomerate! and they’re really excited to spend the all the money they don’t have to buy … well, they don’t know what exactly they will buy, but it will be expensive, and everybody is doing it, and MOST ESPECIALLY, whatever it is, it will NOT fall into the claws of Evil Neighboring Medical Conglomerate and their corrupt schemes for total domination. Just, um, you know, computers and efficiencies and stuff. Just… trust us. We went to Yale / Columbia / um, we’re rich? Yah… that physician restrictive covenant? That’s just boilerplate. Don’t be such a sorry sally. My business school professor was totally like, eludicated, that you’re supposed to buy up all the providers in a down economy, and there was a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, so now what, you’re better than Yale / Columbia / um… don’t you like money?  Yah, dats wat I THOUGHT.

Do the math: Free Money. From The Government. You can’t lose!

I don’t think I need to elaborate here. You know who you are. Please print more copies of my website and continue pester me with tattling. In exchange, I’ll continue to try and estimate the immediate liquidity and regulatory exposure of your operations. Thanks.

NASA HQ On Termination Liability

Keith's note: The following was circulated by NASA Orion Management recently: "Today, a contracts letter was sent to Lockheed Martin relative to termination liability (TL). This letter, directed through NASA Headquarters, interprets the contract language to require the contractor to account for termination liability in its planning for each year of execution. Termination liability is the estimated value of contractor work required to close out the contract if terminated. This is not a notification of termination, but an interpretation of how the contractor should account for TL projections in the current year. The effect of the interpretation may have implications in how we execute the project. However, there are options available within NASA and Lockheed Martin that will be considered in the coming days to assure that we operate within the law while we attempt to execute the program. It is important that everyone keep in mind the President, the Congress, and the NASA Administrator have all publicly expressed their clear expectation that an Orion vehicle will continue to play a central role in the overall emerging space exploration policy and strategy. We are working closely with Lockheed Martin and NASA management to identify acceptable resolutions to this issue that have the least disruption to our integrated government/industry team and our collective ability to perform our mission."

Data Placement on Burned CD/DVD/BluRay media?

I am curious as to if anyone can share with me how data is structured on CD/DVD/and BluRay disks, such as if you burn a backup of some folders off of your C:\ drive, where the data is located physically in respect to the disk itself.

I know that these optical disks start from the inner most pos

Photo safari – Orangutans Part 2 | Not Exactly Rocket Science

More shots from Perth Zoo’s wonderful orangutan exhibit. Orangutans are all too capable of walking on two legs from time to time, and this penchant for bipedalism allows them to negotiate tricky parts of the canopy. One of the females in Perth Zoo is particualrly fond of ambling around on two legs. These photos of her doing so look for all the world like a human in an orangutan costume…

IFPTE Weighs In On NASA Budget

Letter from IFPTE to Senators Mikulski and Shelby Regarding NASA's Proposed FY 2011 Budget

"The greatest strength of the President's budget is that it is honest and forward-looking; in February, President Obama asked NASA to deliver $19 billion worth of work for $19 billion in funding and invested the necessary attention back into long-term R&T so that America can someday lead a crewed mission into deep space. To those in Congress who argue passionately and cogently that NASA should do more and move faster, we say "show me the money". IFPTE would support an increase in NASA's workload as long as it is linked to an appropriate increase in funding. Never again should NASA be asked to deliver $22 billion worth of work for $19 billion in funds as this is a formula for failure."

Two Hydraulic Cylinders to be Synchronized

Dear friends

I am facing a problem of synchronizing two hydraulic cylinders which are about 2000 mm apart and each is having a platform on it of the size of 600 x 1300 mm. Of course the cylinders will have guide rods on both sides. The load on each cylinder is 1600 kg and the it could vary
