The yearning for immortality dates back at least to ancient times. As human brain size increased rapidly over the past million years, our ancestors began to think increasingly about the inevitability of death and the redemptive possibility of everlasting life. Ancient pharaohs, queens, and kings used every means to ensure their vestigial persistence through future ages. They had themselves enshrined in legends, songs, and poems; they had their remains preserved in vast pyramids.
Part of the reason for that yearning may lie in the fact that people already live so long and with such self-awareness. Our species is distinctive in its ability to remember and to predict future events based upon past experience. Before the invention of writing, and even afterward, reliable predictions required the presence of memories in a living person. People well past their reproductive years could add value to their tribe by remembering early warning signs of rare phenomena, such as drought, locusts, and disease.
In modern times our learning extends even further. It includes postdoctoral studies and on-the-job training that may continue well into our 60s. Like our ancient predecessors, we enshrine the most important bits of our collective knowledge, only in more sophisticated embodiments: scientific publications, books, music, video, websites. Nevertheless, when people die, their wisdomthe memories and mental processes that produced that knowledgedies too.
Throughout history, death was associated with assaults, sickness, and privation. Now an increasingly common cause of death is aging. As the wealth of nations increases and exposure to toxins and infectious agents drops, aging will become the cause of most disease, debility, and death. At the same time, many more people will remain active beyond the age of 100. So, beyond the fear of death, there are practical reasons to explore extending our healthy years.
Scientists have much to learn from the longest-lived humans, many of whom will have their DNA sequenced in the next two years. The effort to extend lifeand, even more, to extend lifes youthful, vigorous phaseis a clear opportunity for synthetic biology, the technique of extensively engineering the genome. Artist Anil Goswami celebrates the flamboyant spirit of good old denim with a designer touch
Uninitiated into the design component of art, the visitors at the recently concluded United Art Fair (UAF) in the Capital overlooked an impressive work of art two mammoth-sized human skulls, a male and a female, positioned on either side of a giant glossy stainless steel wheel. The wheel had 16 partitions and the biggest one at the centre played the divider for the skulls.
The heads, albeit raw and apparently grotesque, possessed twinkling eyes. They wore pieces of denim all over them cut in spiral shapes. The denim is predominantly of various shades of blue followed by grey and black. The male skull wore playing cards symbols on its teeth, and the female, blood red and pink hearts. She was embellished with nose pins and rings piecing into her eyebrow as well. The spiral denim, pasted on the skull, was also anchored at a couple of places with art pins that served as added ornamentation.
The skull duo, paradoxically titled Immortality is designed by a 35-year-old Delhi-based Santiniketan student Anil Goswami to symbolise the Denim Festival organised by corporate entity DLF sometime ago. It made its entry into UAFs Sculpture Park section by the virtue of its uniqueness.
Mr. Goswami, who holds a post-graduate degree in Conservation and Restoration from National Museum Institute, New Delhi, explains the philosophy and engineering of his work, I was asked to make a work of art celebrating the flamboyant youth, both male and female, and the spirit of denim. Brain is the most important part of the human body; so I decided to show it through the skull. Its a terrific brain that innovated with denim and influenced the youth.
By using playing card symbols on the male skulls teeth, the artist has embellished the skulls with a character of their own. It represents the males gambling attitude, especially towards his career and often in matters of the heart, and pasted the heart shaped denims on the female skulls set of teeth to symbolise a womans emotional quotient.
Mr. Goswami had been experimenting with Celtic art, tattoos and the concept of spiral in literature and philosophy. Influenced by the spiral and its deeper meaning relating to lifes ups and down, in his work he cut denim in spirals and used light and dark shades of the fabric to represent the gloomy and glinting phases of life.
As a designer, he needed to be careful about the balance of colour, design, symmetry of the skull and weight. The skulls, as big as 13x8 feet in size, had to be weighed and balanced with 13 feet wheels only. He made 16 partitions within the wheel and metaphorically described them as peher or slots of the day or the power of time. So the overall meaning of the designer art roughly conveys that the human brain that made a terrific fabric is dear to all age groups and all genders at all times. It took him six months to conceptualise and two months to execute his work. He used 40 meters of denim for the entire work. I even cut my own jeans when I fell short of raw fabric, he says.
This kind of art, however, has its drawbacks. When its time-bound purpose is over, it is sent back to its maker/designer, and then there are no takers. Having admirers of such works is one thing but promoting them in public or art spaces is a different aspect altogether, the designer admits.
DLF sent the works to the fair for a resale, says Mr. Goswami. It went through an unplanned auction with no takers. Till there are any, it is installed outside Kiran Nadar Museum near Mehrauli, a DLF property in Delhi.

We see a select few flirt with golf immortality -- know to many as "59 watch" -- each year on the PGA Tour and European Tour. A guy gets hot, strings together a bunch of birdies early and before you know it, we're talking about the possibility of a sub-60 round.
Legitimate 59 runs come along a couple times a year, but on Thursday afternoon, we had two high-profile names make a serious push in the span of 24 hours. Branden Grace flirted with the number at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship -- he was playing Kingsbarn, one of the three courses in the rotation -- when he went out in 7-under 29 and then eagled the par-5 16th to get to 12-under with two holes to play.
Even though Grace never managed to record another birdie, his 60 was good enough for an opening-round lead at one of the great late-season tournaments on the European Tour schedule. (Playing Kingsbarn, Carnoustie and the Old Course at St Andrews in the span of a week is as good as it gets.) If you want to know how good Grace's 60 was at Kingsbarn, the next best score from someone who played the same course was a 5-under from Gregory Havret.
Not to be outdone by the South African, Ryan Moore decided to make his own run at golf immortality at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The Las Vegas resident clearly felt at home in the desert early in his round when he opened with 6 birdies and an eagle in his first 10 holes and looked to be in great shape to go after a sub-60 round.
But like Grace, Moore ran out of steam down the stretch, bogeying the par-3 8th to finish the day at 9-under 61. Moore also had trouble distancing himself from the field and is currently one shot ahead of Brendon de Jonge.
With low scores and potential sub-60s to be had on both sides of the pond, there's a good chance we could see more of the same on Friday -- especially with near-perfect conditions in Vegas and Fife. Will we see a 59 before the week is over? It's not out of the question. When it comes to golf's "silly season," anything is possible.

The closest competition in the race for the batting title was Angels rookie Mike Trout, who remains Cabrera's toughest competition for the AL MVP. Cabrera was the runaway leader in RBIs.
"When he's over the plate, he can do anything. He's the best hitter in the game," Trout said. "I think his approach, the way he battles with two strikes you leave one pitch over the plate that at-bat and he's going to hit it. He had an unbelievable year."

Ever a season away from his potential, or a game away, even a pitch away, Homer Bailey on Friday night in Pittsburgh became something like the pitcher the Cincinnati Reds always believed would come with that talented right arm.
On a cool night at PNC Park, near the end of a season in which he became a consistent contributor to and 13-game winner for the NL Central-leading Reds, Bailey threw the modern day record-tying seventh no-hitter of 2012.
After the Pirates' Alex Presley popped out on Bailey's 115th pitch, securing a 1-0 win and the Reds' first no-hitter since Tom Browning's in 1988, Bailey thrust his arms straight over his head and welcomed his onrushing teammates. "It's really surreal," Bailey told reporters afterward. "I can't believe it's happening."
In spite of a generation of futility, the Pirates had not been no-hit since 1971 against Bob Gibson. The last Reds right-hander to throw a no-hitter was Tom Seaver, 34 years ago.

Bailey rode his fastball, particularly in Friday night's late innings. His strikeout of pinch-hitter Brock Holt to open the ninth (on a 93-mph fastball) was his 10th, tying his career best. Bailey walked one batter Andrew McCutchen in the seventh inning and had another batter reach on Scott Rolen's fielding error in the third inning. The rest saw Bailey hammer the strike zone with fastballs and bury his slider.
Noting the cooler temperatures and the guidance of catcher Ryan Hanigan, Bailey said, "We didn't have our best stuff, but somehow we were able to go out and make some good pitches."
The seventh overall pick in the 2004 draft, Bailey reached the major leagues three years later, as a 21-year-old. He did not pitch a full season, however, until this one. His career ERA was nearly five when, in April, he began to approach the promise of his early years. Friday's was his 32nd start, during which he surpassed 200 innings for the first time.
As a result, pitching behind Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos and Bronson Arroyo, Bailey is among the reasons the Reds for all intents and purposes finished the NL Central race weeks ago and remain in a fight with the Washington Nationals for the league's best record.

Patience with late-blooming Homer Bailey pays off in form of Reds' first no-hitter since 1988
Today is a day for John Silbers detractors to put their pens down. John Silber is dead, and he was a great man in the sense of how human beings long were measuredby their accomplishments.
In many ways he was the exact opposite of the famously self-referential Milan Kundera, whose own thinking was summed up nicely in his novel Immortality:
While hypnotic, that obsession with self-reference is a recipe for hyper-sensitivity, resentments, and all-too-much navel-gazing, the kind that we require of our students all too often as they learn to write. We have them write about their feelings, their observations, their observations about their feelings, and maybe even their observations about others observations about their feelings.
For John Silber that was a disasterin some ways the disaster of American education.
Some may think that Silbers brusqueness was all about shunning peoples feelings. Back in 2008, when the Massachusetts Board of Education spent successive meetings seeking nicer ways to speak about school failure, hoping to soften even the already fluffy underperforming by calling them a Commonwealth priority, Silber thundered:
The newspapers delighted in such quotes. But the fact is that Silber was interested in attaching the right word to the right object or the right idea. He is called the architect of the MCAS in todays Globe, but the fact is that he thought that any useful test was good even the Stanford 9. (He was wrong on that, BTW.) What he really is the architect of is the broader set of education reforms that set this state on a path focused on academics rather than simple skills or self-esteem. He believed in knowledge acquisition and thereafter the formulation of an individuals judgment.
Tests were a vehicle to inject this into a system that was failing spectacularly. Like so many in the state, when Silber started as Chairman of the Board of Education in Massachusetts, he was not a fan of charter schools. He thought he would by dint of personality and force of will turn around the state's entire network of district schools. And he aimed to do it by focusing on academics, higher-quality teaching (ensured through subject/contentbased tests rather than the usual PRAXIS tests employed in other states) and an accountability/audit office for the public schools that was to mirror the British system.
Those were difficult times for such an argument. After all, the Board of Education was, prior to his arrival, a place where debates about whether to include Ebonics in the states content standards took considerable air time. He was appointed in 1996 by his former rival for Governor, William Weld, to chair the states Board of Education. That appointment had the support of both the Senate President and the Speaker of the House, because they were disappointed with the pace of reform after the Commonwealths 1993 landmark Education Reform law.
All three of these elected leaders got what they were looking for: An energetic, focused educational leader who was willing to do what it took to shake up the education establishment and bureaucracy.
