Workington Comets happy to see end of season

Last updated at 13:29, Monday, 27 October 2014

Workington Comets manager Tony Jackson admitted that his team are relieved to see the back of their long season after their Border Trophy success.

Tony Jackson

Comets won the second leg of their play-off meetings with Berwick Bandits despite Edinburgh Monarchs already progressing to the final, which they won on the same night.

But they did claim the Border Trophy, awarded to the aggregate winner between the Comets and Bandits. The trophy had first been contested between the sides more than 40 years ago and Jackson admitted it was a nice way to end what has been an emotionally draining season.

He said: It was a great way to finish.

Berwick werent the strongest but the lads got the job done.

It was nice to win the trophy. Of course its not the top prize but youd rather that than nothing.

Jackson admitted he was desperate to see a Comets title someday and was disappointed with the way the season turned out after such a positive build-up.

He said: I want to see Workington win the title before I die but I dont want to live forever.

UCI scientists identify lesion-healing mechanism in psoriasis

A UC Irvine-led study has revealed the underlying genetic factors that help repair skin lesions caused by psoriasis, which could engender new methods of controlling the lingering condition.

Dr. Bogi Andersen, professor of biological chemistry and endocrinology at UCI, and colleagues discovered that a gene called grainyhead known to be important in epidermal development and wound healing triggers a repair pathway for psoriasis lesions. Conversely, they found that deletion of this gene increased the severity and longevity of the disfiguring patches.

"Our research suggests that targeting this mechanism of healing may lead to pharmaceutical products that limit the itchy, painful lesions all psoriasis sufferers must endure," Andersen said. Study results appear online Oct. 27 in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition caused by an overactive immune system in which immune cells secrete inflammatory mediators that cause thickening and other abnormalities in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. These lesions look like scaly plaques, and they heal at a rate dependent upon the severity of the disease.

The researchers learned that in psoriasis a compound called grainyhead-like 3 which binds to DNA to control the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA orchestrates the activation of an epidermal repair pathway. (The grainyhead gene was initially discovered in fruit flies, where it's important for wound healing.)

They also found it easier to induce psoriasis-like lesions in mice lacking the GRHL3 gene. Furthermore, these lesions did not resolve properly and persisted even in the face of active immune suppression treatments currently being studied for the disease.

"Our study indicates that an evolutionarily ancient epidermal repair pathway is activated in psoriasis lesions and that this pathway suppresses disease severity and helps heal the lesions," Andersen said. "We speculate that abnormalities in this pathway might contribute to disease severity and that in the future this mechanism could be targeted to help treat psoriasis."

Space station dodging junk from old satellite

By Marcia Dunn The Associated Press October 27, 2014

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.

The International Space Station sidestepped a piece of treacherous junk Monday just hours before the planned launch of a supply ship from Virginia.

NASA said debris from an old, wrecked Russian satellite would have come dangerously close to the orbiting lab just two-tenths of a mile if not for the move.

The space station was maneuvered well out of harm's way to keep the outpost and its six inhabitants safe.

Mission Control was informed of the space junk over the weekend. It is wreckage from a Kosmos satellite that was launched in 1993 and collided with an Iridium spacecraft in 2009.

Mission Control said the space station's relocation would not affect Monday evening's scheduled launch of a commercial supply ship.

Orbital Sciences Corp.'s unmanned Cygnus capsule holds 5,000 pounds of cargo for NASA, including 32 mini research satellites, a meteor tracker, and a tank of high-pressure nitrogen to replenish a vestibule used by spacewalking astronauts. Liftoff was scheduled for 6:45 p.m. from Wallops Island, Virginia.

The launch, coming a half-hour after sunset, should be visible along much of the Eastern Seaboard, from South Carolina to Connecticut and Massachusetts. As an added bonus, the space station was to pass overhead five minutes later, resembling a fast-moving star.

Traffic is heavy these days 260 miles up.

International Space Station Takes Evasive Action to Avoid Collision with Russian Junk

More than 500,000 pieces of space junk are tracked every day by NASA(Wikipedia)

Debris from a spent Russian satellite came close to the orbiting satellite which was then manoeuvred out of harm's way, said NASA.

The space junk came within a fifth of a mile (320 metres) of the orbital laboratory and its six inhabitants.

Mission Control said the space station's relocation would not affect the scheduled launch of a commercial supply ship from Virginia. Its unmanned Cygnus capsule will carry some 1,500lb (680kg) of materials for space experiments.

The research includes how to stop headachesin space, measuring the rate of pea-shoot growth and how milk spoils in micro-gravity.

The Russian wreckage is from a Kosmos satellite that was launched in 1993 and collided with an Iridium spacecraft in 2009, according to an AP report.

"Given all the traffic that's coming and going... we might want to send up some of those red and green wands they use on the deck of an aircraft carrier," said Orbital Sciences' executive vice president Frank Culbertson, a former astronaut who lived on the space station over ten years ago.

Space junkis an increasing danger to astronauts on the space station, as well as to other satellites. There are about 6,000 tons of space junk orbiting Earth of all shapes and sizes from small metal bolts to dead satellites.

More than 500,000 pieces of space junk are tracked every day by NASA and the U.S. military's Space Surveillance Network in order to avoid collisions in orbit.

In 2012, the international space station fired its thrusters to avoid debris from a 2009 satellite crash between an U.S. and Russian spacecraft.

Time and Space Converge on the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi

Peerless precision with multi-functions programmed by a single crown

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN | October 27, 2014

The Luminox Space Series enters a new orbit the launch of the new Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi, made for space and Essential Gear for space pilots of USA-based private rocket engine and space flight development company, XCOR Space Expeditions. Designed with input from XCOR test pilots and astronauts and with them in mind, the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi is an analog watch with digital windows, multi-function capabilities and the added advantage of the proprietary Luminox Light Technology for constant time reading visibility in the pitch dark environment of space.

Equipped with the ETA movement 988.333 Ana-Digi movement, which is the standard for professional pilots worldwide, the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi features a single programming crown for all manipulations simply rotating, pressing or pulling out the crown is enough to operate the entire set of functions that are all especially useful to space aviators: 11100th of a second chronograph, countdown timer, GMT timezone, alarm, audible time signal (minute repeater) and calendar.

As the XCOR Lynx Mark II space shuttle re-enters the Earth's atmosphere after propulsion across the boundary of space at 103km above the sea level of the Earth, both pilot and passenger will experience 4Gs for 10 to 20 seconds as the spacecraft becomes hypersonic, or travels faster than the speed of sound. During this critical re-entry to Earth, every millisecond counts, as the pilot must time the steering of the XCOR Lynx Mark II to hit the Earth's atmosphere at a highly precise angle to protect the space shuttle from the intense friction caused by the air molecules (as there is no air in space). Timing of re-entry must be of peerless precision and this is accomplished only with the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi, which provides digital time for XCOR space pilots to synchronize their operations and accurate timing down to 11100th of a second, combined with constant and dependable time reading visibility in the pitch dark environment of space from the cutting-edge luminescence of Luminox Light Technology.

As space is a limitless entity not confined by geographical timezones, the GMT time function is required for local and destination time calculations, as well as the stopwatch feature with lap capability and the set and reset alarm for navigation of the XCOR Lynx Mark II's glide back to Earth.

The ratcheted bezel is unidirectional and constructed from titanium, and sits on an ergonomic titanium cushion casing. The dial is carbon-fibre, utilizing the same highly heat-resistant material that makes up the body of the XCOR Lynx Mark II, necessary to withstand the friction of re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere after the thrilling orbit in space. The dial and counters of this high-performance chronograph are in the same black color, and is fitted with a sturdy black leather strap, further enhancing its tech-savvy, masculine appearance.

Luminox heralds a new era in space travel

As the official watch of XCOR Space Expeditions, Luminox is committed to making passenger space flights possible for Singaporeans. "We are now entering an exciting new era of the commercialization of space travel and Luminox, in partnership with XCOR Space Expeditions, is paving the way for the common man to undergo a literally out-of-this-world experience the chance to see the Earth from space. Wearing a Luminox is an adventure like no other," said Pamela Tan, brand manager of Luminox.

The first commercial flights on the XCOR Lynx Mark II are planned tor the end of 2015 and will depart from the Curacao spaceport in the Caribbean operated by XCOR Space Expeditions. For US$100,000, Bruneians have a chance to take in a unique view of the Earth's beauty from space on the XCOR Lynx Mark II, in orbit at 103km above the Earth's atmosphere, and officially qualify as an astronaut.

Space station dodges junk from old satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) A space station delivery mission was called off Monday, just hours after the orbiting lab had to sidestep a piece of treacherous junk.

Orbital Sciences Corp. got to within the 10-minute mark for the Virginia launch of its unmanned Cygnus capsule. But a sailboat ended up in the restricted danger zone, and controllers halted the evening countdown.

The Virginia-based company will try again Tuesday evening.

Early Wednesday afternoon, space station flight controllers steered the complex and its six inhabitants away from satellite wreckage. The debris part of an old, destroyed Russian satellite would have passed within two-tenths of a mile of the station if not for the maneuver.

Mission Control was informed of the space junk over the weekend. It is wreckage from a Kosmos satellite that was launched in 1993 and collided with an Iridium spacecraft in 2009.

Orbital Sciences Corp.'s unmanned Cygnus capsule on the pad at Wallops Island, Virginia holds 5,000 pounds of cargo for NASA, including 32 mini research satellites, a meteor tracker, and a tank of high-pressure nitrogen to replenish a vestibule used by spacewalking astronauts.

Traffic is heavy these days 260 miles up.

Just this past Saturday, a Dragon cargo ship supplied by the California-based SpaceX company its fifth departed the space station after a monthlong visit and splashed into the Pacific with a load of precious science samples.

On Wednesday, a Russian cargo ship is set to rocket into orbit from Kazakhstan and arrive at the space station the same day.

"Given all the traffic that's coming and going ... we might want to send up some of those red and green wands they use on the deck of an aircraft carrier," said Orbital Sciences' executive vice president Frank Culbertson, a former astronaut who lived on the space station more than a decade ago.

Foursomes project among 18 aboard International Space Station

Posted TODAY, 6:52 PM Updated TODAY, 6:58 PM

SAN ANTONIO - Four students from Hobby Middle School are riding high as they wait for their science experiment to be launched into space aboard an unmanned cargo spacecraft on its way to the International Space Station.

Their project, a crystal-growing experiment, was chosen among 54 within Northside Independent School District to be launched into space through the Student Space Flight Experiment Program.

A total of 18 student experiments will be aboard the Orbital Cygnus cargo craft as it makes its way to the ISS.

It feels really cool because school is what I do every day, and now Im known throughout it, said seventh-gradergrader, Anthony Holmes.

The foursome is made up of twoseventh-graders, Holmes and Kalista Ybarra; and two sixth-graders, Jacob Robio and Madelyn Hickman.

The group was stunned when they learned their project was chosen, and they admit their friends were impressed as well.

They're like, Oh, that's really cool. You're really smart. And I was like, 'I know I am, Ybarra said, giggling. Its really cool everyone knows about that now.

Motorsport: Van Gisbergen in hot form for Hampton Downs

Shane Van Gisbergen is in red-hot form as he heads to this weekends TR Group Waikato 400 at Hampton Downs, round two of the 2014-15 BNT NZ SuperTourers championship, Nov 1-2.

Van Gisbergen teamed up with his old friend and fellow Aucklander, Simon Evans, to dominate the first round of the championship at Taupo in September, and they start as clear favourites for the second endurance round in Evans Holden.

In between the two New Zealand events Van Gisbergen again showed his great speed and car control on Australasias main V8 stage, the 1000km race on the Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst and the Gold Coast 600 over the weekend - where he achieved a pole position and race win.

At Bathurst he qualified on pole, broke the lap record and was leading near the end - till the final pit-stop, when his Holden stalled and would not restart because of a starter motor failure. After losing three laps, he finished 16th but retained fourth place in the V8 Supercar championship.

"We had a fantastic car at the end, so Im pretty gutted really," he said after the race.

And Evans is now one of the top resident Kiwi drivers, as he proved when he made the break that set up the duos victory in race one at Taupo, so the pair will be hard to beat.

But Van Gisbergen is not the only young Kiwi to make an impression at Bathurst. Hamiltons Ant Pedersen and Aucklander Andre Heimgartner, who stand second and third respectively in the New Zealand championship, were on course to finish sixth till they also hit a late setback, a miscalculation by the crew forcing them to stop for extra fuel right at the end.

In the BNT NZ SuperTourers endurance rounds, Pedersen shares his Ford with former A1GP hero Jonny Reid while Heimgartners co-driver for his Holden is Aussie veteran Paul Morris, who won Bathurst with Chaz Mostert.

Reigning champion Greg Murphy needs to get back to the top of the podium as he and Aussie Jack Perkins failed to finish the first race at Taupo, their Holden damaged by contact with another car. Murphy and James Courtney, racing for the Holden Racing Team, had finished second in the Sandown 500, the lead-up event for Bathurst, but setbacks in the big race left them 13th at the end.

More Australian V8 Supercar drivers join the fray with Cameron Waters (co-driving with Mitch Cunningham), Steve Owen (Tim Edgell), Tony DAlberto (Angus Fogg) and Dale Wood (Dominic Storey) all crossing the Tasman for the weekend.
