At tribute to Liberty Medal honoree Malala, a song unsung

When Malala Yousafzai accepted the Liberty Medal at the National Constitution Center last week, one thing was missing from the ceremony:

A scheduled videotape performance by 14-year-old pop singer Ayla Potamkin, a Colorado girl with deep Philadelphia roots, who wrote a song to honor the 17-year-old Pakistani human-rights activist.

Advisers to Yousafzai, people familiar with the matter said, insisted that the song be struck from the event, telling Constitution Center officials that its ardently pro-America theme was offensive and insensitive to other nations.

"It was unfortunate," said former Gov. Ed Rendell, vice chairman of the center's board of trustees. "And I think it broke Ayla's heart."

He said Yousafzai - known to the world as just Malala - did not take part in the discussions. The talks occurred between her representatives and the center staff.

Efforts to contact Eason Jordan, a spokesman for the Malala Fund, were unsuccessful Tuesday. The foundation led by Malala focuses on helping girls go to school and speak up for their right to an education.

Jeffrey Rosen, president and chief executive officer of the Constitution Center, said excising the song, titled "America," was "absolutely" the right decision, given the objections of Yousafzai's representatives.

"The whole point of the ceremony is to honor her in a way she felt comfortable with," he said, adding that he did not find the song troubling. "We just learned from her team that they objected, and respected their wishes."

5 reasons the Statue of Liberty is hipper than you think

NEW YORK Happy birthday, Lady Liberty!

I was just thinking of something that would be fun to do, dressing up something very large, Graham told ABC News. Mount Rushmore is too far from here, so the next best thing is the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty turns 128 on Tuesday, and shes never looked better. Still tall and regal, you may overlook this American icon because shes been around for so long. But trust us: Shes kind of a badass.

Here are 5 reasons why:

1. Shes on her #selfie game

Head on over to the Crown Cam to check out this hot statue selfie. Its just one of a few cameras set up at EarthCam.com to capture the action on Ellis Island.

2. The hip-hop crowd loves her

Want some street cred? Throw a line in your rap song about La Liberty, and its all good. From Jay Zs Empire State of Mind (Statue of Liberty, long live the World Trade) to Ludacris Undisputed (So put ya fist up, even the Statue of Liberty lit a flame for the way that I lit my wrist up), she is hailed.

3. She celebrates holidays

The Statue of Liberty will reportedly do some crossdressing for Halloween.

Designer Nick Graham has said he will outfit her in a few bow ties to celebrate both the holiday and the launch of his new menswear line. The 60-foot, 35-pound bow ties wont actually be draped around the statue but will be flown near it using helicopters for a quick photo op.

Libertarian Party Finding Strong Support in Travis County

Libertarians in Texas want voters to know, there's a third option out there.

"It's really time for voters to step outside the box," Arthur DiBianca, Travis County Libertarian Party treasurer, said. "If you keep voting Democrat and Republican, you're going to keep the same stuff we've been getting for decades."

And in Travis County, voters will see a lot of Libertarians on the ballot this year.

"We have 37 candidates this year, which is a record for us," DiBianca said.

The Austin area in particular has racked up its Libertarian base.

"We believe it's also the most Libertarian candidates on the ballot in any county in America this year, so we're excited about that too, TCLPs treasurer said.

The party's platform has a mix of ideologies, promoting both fiscal responsibility and social tolerance.

"I would say the biggest thing that we're commonly looking at is trying to get away from an overreach of government, overreach of corporatism and things like that, Libertarian House District 46 candidate Kevin Ludlow said. "I don't have any loyalty to either of the two parties so I think what I'm finding is people generally believe me when I say If I were elected, I absolutely would push forward with legislation on these things."

In Texas, a Libertarian has never held statewide office, but they do see the 2012 election as a success for them. Five of their candidates were able to each garner over 1 million votes.

Giant tortoises making a comeback on Galapagos Islands

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, Ecuador, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The giant tortoises of the Galapagos Island were on the brink of extinction just a half-century ago, but 40 years after several specimens of the endangered species were bred in captivity and released back onto the island of Espaola, the massive land-dwelling turtle is once again thriving.

"The global population was down to just 15 tortoises by the 1960s," James P. Gibbs, a biologist at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, explained in a recent press release. "Now there are some 1,000 tortoises breeding on their own. The population is secure. It's a rare example of how biologists and managers can collaborate to recover a species from the brink of extinction."

Gibbs and his colleagues have been charting the growing success of the island's tortoises and recently outlined their rebound in a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Now thriving, in large thanks to the hard work of local biologists and wildlife managers, the tortoises are doing a bit of their own ecological restoration -- scattering the seeds of the island's native cacti. Only a few decades ago, the plant was near nonexistent, wiped out by feral goats that were introduced to Espaola towards the end of the 19th century.

Despite the good news, the tortoise remains vulnerable and is still listed as endangered; researchers say managers must be diligent to keep the turtle population on the right track.

"This is a miraculous conservation success accomplished by the Galapagos National Park Service," said Gibbs, "but there is yet more work to fully recover the ecosystem upon which the tortoises and other rare species depend."
