Orbital's Rocket Disaster Narrows Space Station Resupply Options

The explosion of anOrbital Sciencesrocket carrying supplies to the International Space Station signaled more than the loss of a $200 million mission on Tuesday. The incident marked the first disaster of a commercial resupply mission to the space station since NASA put the responsibility in the hands of private U.S. contractors. Itsa turn of events that will likely leave the supply runs in the hands of Orbitals competitor SpaceX and Russiain the near future.

The Antares rocket owned by Orbital Sciences was originally scheduled to carry about 2,200 kilograms of supplies to the six astronauts currently stationed aboard the space station, according to BBC News. But the rocket faltered just 15 seconds after liftoff, fell back to Earth, and exploded in an infernoon Oct. 28. Click Orlando reported that the force of the explosion broke windows and damaged ceiling tiles ofshops and restaurants several miles from the launch site at the NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia.

Evidence suggests the failure initiated in the first stage after which the vehicle lost its propulsive capability and fell back to the ground impacting near, but not on, the launch pad, according to anOrbital Sciences statement on 30 October.

TheAntares rocket carriedsupplies that included 600 kilograms of food such as pre-packaged meals and freeze-dried crab cakes,BBC Newspoints out. Other cargo consisted of experimental equipment for testing blood flow to the human brain, understanding how space travel affects the human bodys immune system, analyzing meteorsand studying the growth of pea shoots in orbital conditions.

Luckily, the space station has enoughsupplies to last for a period of four to six months, a NASA officialsaid in a CBS News interview. That means the astronauts should be able to hold out well into the next year even if no other resupply spacecraft arrived. Russias Roskosmos space agency said it was ready to launch extra supply missions upon NASAs request, according toReuters.

Orbital Sciences holds a $1.9 billion contractwith NASA for resupplying the space station for at least eight launches through 2016. U.S. spaceflight firm SpaceXfounded by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elon Muskholds a separate resupply contract with NASA worth $1.6 billion. But the space station can also receive supplies from a host of space agency spacecraft such as Russias Progress cargo ship andJapans H-2 Transfer Vehicle, according toSPACE.com. (The European Space Agency wrapped up its fifth and final resupply mission for the space station with its Automated Transfer Vehicles in August of this year.)

An ongoing investigation of the disaster by Orbital Sciences has focused on the evident failure in the Antares rocketsfirst stage enginesAJ26 engines first developed by the Soviet Union for its failed N-1 moon rocket program in the 1960s and 1970s. Aerojet-Rocketdyne bought and refurbished many of the Russian rocket engines before contracting to sell20 of theenginesto Orbital Sciences, according to theLos Angeles Times. The newspaper reports that Orbital Sciences had already been planning to retire the problematic rocket engines prior to the recent launch failure.

The latest disaster comes at an awkward time for Orbital Sciences in addition to driving the companys stock price downward. Orbital is in the midst of merging with Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK)an aerospace company that built the solid rocket motors for NASAs space shuttleto form a new company focused on space rockets and military hardware. But the Wall Street Journal reports thatboth Orbital and outside analysts dont expect the rocket accident to dramatically affect the merger.

Still, Orbital Sciences wont be launching more resupply missions for the space station anytime soon. That may give the edge to Musks SpaceX in terms of future contract awards from NASA if there is a protracted accident investigation, saidChris Quilty, an analyst at Raymond James, in a research note cited byBusinessweek. SpaceX also recently won an additional $2.6 billion contractto build and test its Dragon 2 spacecraft for carrying U.S. astronauts to the space station.

NASA will also have to manage space station operations with just one commercial resupply partner in the short term, if not longer. The U.S. space agency is focusedon developing itsheavy rocket systemfor taking astronauts beyond Earth orbit while leaving the standard space station resupply missions to private contractors.

One person dead as Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo rocket plane crashes on test flight

A Virgin Galactic spacecraft crashed after an explosion during a test flight over the Mojave desert on Friday, killing one of the pilots, seriously injuring another and leaving debris scattered over a wide area.

The plane, SpaceShipTwo, was undertaking a test flight as part of Virgin Galactics plans for commercial space travel when a serious anomaly occurred, the company said.

Witnesses reported the spacecraft broke apart soon after it was detached from the plane that carries it to 45,000ft.

Rescuers found one of the pilots dead on the ground. Another, who appeared to have deployed an emergency parachute, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

The crash served as another stark reminder the dangers of space exploration, three days after an unmanned rocket on supply mission to the international space station exploded seconds after takeoff from a Nasa launch facility in Virginia.

Space is hard, and today was a tough day, said George Whitesides, CEO and president of Virgin Galactic, at a news conference.

Two pilots are usually on board for Virgin Galactics test flights, launched from a base in the Mojave desert. The identities of those involved in Fridays accident, which happened just before 11am local time, were not disclosed.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that one person was dead and another had suffered major injuries in the accident, which happened at 10.51am local time. The survivor was flown to hospital by air ambulance.

A spokesman for Kern County sheriff said the co-pilot of the plane had been killed, while the pilot ejected and suffered moderate to major injuries.

Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo suffers 'in-flight anomaly'

LOS ANGELES: Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo craft suffered an "anomaly" during a test flight over California on Friday (Oct 31), the commercial space flight operator announced on its Twitter feed.

The craft, which is still in its test phase and which normally carries two pilots, had been carried aloft on a bigger aircraft known as WhiteKnightTwo and then released for a test of its rocket engine.

The fate of the crew was not immediately known.

"SpaceShipTwo has experienced an in-flight anomaly. Additional info and statement forthcoming," Virgin said, giving no further details. WhiteKnightTwo had taken off normally from California's Mojave desert, and been released normally, in what was the 35th such flight.

"SpaceShipTwo has been released by WhiteKnightTwo, and is now flying freely," the firm wrote in a blow-by-blow account of the flight, adding: "Ignition! SpaceShipTwo is flying under rocket power again."

The next tweet announced the "anomaly".

More than 500 people have already reserved seats - and paid a deposit on the US$200,000 (S$257,092) ticket price - for a minutes-long suborbital flight on SS2. SpaceShipTwo can carry six passengers.

SpaceShipTwo is the commercial version of SpaceShipOne, the first private spacecraft to reach the edge of space in 2004, and which is now on displace at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Private companies are rushing to fill the gap left by NASA, which ended its 30-year shuttle program in July with the completion of the final Atlantis mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

Friday's incident is the second involving a space craft this week, after an unmanned Orbital Science rocket exploded on Tuesday six seconds after launch on a resupply mission to the ISS.

Virgin Galactic space tourism rocket explodes during test flight, 1 dead

The Associated Press Published Friday, October 31, 2014 3:13PM EDT Last Updated Friday, October 31, 2014 5:03PM EDT

MOJAVE, Calif. -- A Virgin Galactic space tourism rocket exploded Friday during a test flight, killing a pilot aboard and seriously injuring another while scattering wreckage in Southern California's Mojave Desert, witnesses and officials said.

The company founded by British billionaire Richard Branson would not say what happened other than that it was working with authorities to determine the cause of the "accident."

"During the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo," Virgin Galactic tweeted.

Ken Brown, a photographer who witnessed the crash, told The Associated Press that SpaceShipTwo exploded after a plane designed to take it to high altitude released it and the craft ignited its rocket motor.

Brown said the wreckage fell in the desert north of Mojave Air and Space Port, where the test flight originated. The area is about 120 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

There is one fatality and one major injury, California Highway Patrol Officer Jesse Borne said. One person parachuted out, he said.

SpaceShipTwo, which is typically flown by two pilots, was designed to provide a suborbital thrill ride into space before it returns to Earth as a glider.

Friday's flight marked the 55th for the spaceship, which was intended to be the first of a line of craft that would open space to paying civilians. At 60 feet long, SpaceShipTwo features two large windows for each of up to six passengers, one on the side and one overhead.

Virgin Galactic -- owned by Branson's Virgin Group and Aabar Investments PJS of Abu Dhabi -- sells seats on each prospective journey for $250,000, with full payment due at the time of booking. The company says that "future astronauts," as it calls customers, have visited Branson's Caribbean home, Necker Island, and gone through G-force training.

Wright-Phillips 2 goals propel Red Bulls into conference semis

On Wednesday, Thierry Henry called Red Bulls teammate Bradley Wright-Phillips the deserving MLS MVP, and before Thursdays playoff game, the fans unveiled a TIFO that declared him the Ultimate Scoring Machine. Then the English striker went out and proved them all right, carrying the Red Bulls to a come-from-behind 2-1 win.

Wright-Phillips who broke the leagues single-season scoring record with 27 goals in the regular season followed up with an encore in the postseason. His two goals in the latter stages of a one-off knockout round game gave the Red Bulls a victory over defending MLS Cup champion Sporting KC.

Wright-Phillips scored on an Henry assist to tie it in the 77th minute, and then somehow got wide open in the box for a back-post header in the 90th minute. The goal set off scarlet-colored smoke bombs among the 15,518 fans, and sent the Red Bulls to their first playoff win in Red Bull Arena and first at home since 2005.

The ball was quite high wasnt it? I thought I couldnt get much of it. I just tried to get it on target, Wright-Phillips said. I was pretty excited. That ball initially I thought was going to be caught. I looked at the fans and they were going crazy so it made me go nuts. It took as deflection, but I dont care. I heard the announcer say Bradley Wright Phillips.

The Red Bulls will play top-seeded archrival D.C. in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The first game will be Sunday at 4 p.m., with the road leg at RFK Nov. 8.

Bradley turned to me in the 60th and said we cant go home, Tim Cahill said. And I said were not going home. They were their own worst enemy. When they got that goal, it meant that we had to come out.

The boys, theres a great togetherness. [Coach Mike Petke] is making sure we remember its not just about technique and football. Weve got drive and heart, and thats what this league is all about. Weve got that.

The Red Bulls also have another shot at an MLS Cup before what feels like an inevitable closing of this window. The contract for the Henry, 37, expires at years end, and he is undecided about retirement. There is also continuing speculation that Cahill could be leaving.

We knew if we didnt win we were going on holiday and thats not what we wanted, Henry said.

The Red Bulls fell behind in the 53rd when midfielder Benny Feilhaber intercepted a pass for Eric Alexander, and played a through-ball to Dom Dwyer for the score. But the Red Bulls equalized in the 77th.

Red Bulls beat Sporting KC 2-1 to advance

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) Thierry Henry won't be retiring at least for two more games.

The 37-year-old Frenchman set up the first of Bradley Wright-Phillips' two goals in the final 13 minutes and helped rally New York to a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night.

The result eliminated the defending MLS Cup champion from the playoffs and sent the Red Bulls to the conference semifinals.

New York will host D.C. United on Sunday in the first of a two-leg semifinal series. D.C. will host the second leg on Nov. 8.

Henry is in the final year of his contract with New York and, despite several media reports indicating he intends to retire, has not commented publicly about intentions.

He once again did not address the question, and Red Bulls coach Mike Petke grew exasperated when asked if he thought about the match being Henry's last when New York trailed.

"Do I have to get it tattooed on my head? I have no clue what Thierry's going to do," Petke said. "I said it enough already. Thierry, I think, could play two more years."

After Dom Dwyer finished a counter in the 53rd minute to put Kansas City ahead, Henry led New York's rally, forcing Kansas City keeper Eric Kronberg to tip his header over the bar in the 55th minute and volleying a loose ball high in the 72nd.

Then in the 77th minute, he took a feed from Peguy Luyindula and sent a short ball into the middle of the penalty area. Wright-Phillips struck it first time, knocking it off the leg of defender Matt Besler and inside the far post.

With less than a minute to go, Wright-Phillips won the game, knocking in a header off a cross from Ambroise Oyongo.

Seattle, LA favorites as MLS playoffs get going

Seattle is trying to make MLS history. Los Angeles would love nothing more than to send Landon Donovan into retirement raising another trophy.

New England is the hottest team in the league entering the playoffs after the addition of midfielder Jermaine Jones. And New York's Bradley Wright-Phillips gets two more games to try to add to his scoring barrage while questions linger about whether this will be Thierry Henry's farewell to the MLS.

The MLS Cup playoffs get started in earnest this weekend with the first of the two-leg, aggregate-score conference semifinals. Seattle enters as the favorite after winning the Supporters' Shield as the best team in the league during the regular season. But only twice in the past decade has the Supporters' Shield winner gone on to win the MLS Cup title.

New this year to the MLS postseason is the introduction of away goals as a deciding factor. That tiebreaker has been a staple of the Champions League in Europe but has only been introduced into the MLS playoff structure.

"It rewards you for playing on the road and not just sitting back and trying to get a 0-0 result on the road and coming home. So you think about it a little bit more," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said.

Here are the conference semifinal matchups:

WESTERN CONFERENCE

SEATTLE SOUNDERS vs. FC DALLAS

Seattle is trying to become the first team to win the U.S. Open Cup, Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup title in the same season. The Sounders were the first club since ties were introduced to finish the regular season with 20 victories. Getting to an MLS Cup title match would be the final step for Seattle. Seattle has advanced to the Western Conference finals only once in its five previous playoff trips. Seattle went 2-1 in the regular season against Dallas, including an important 3-2 comeback win on the road early. The Sounders beat Dallas 2-1 in Seattle in May, but dropped their last trip to Texas in September when David Texiera scored twice and an 88th-minute goal by Blas Perez capped the 3-1 win.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely looks smoking hot in red leopard print in new shoot for Vogue Mexico

She always looks a million dollars, but our eyes nearly popped out of our heads when we saw Rosie Huntington-Whitely in red leopard print.

The gorgeous supermodel, who has legs to die for, features in a new photoshoot for Vogue Mexico which is so hot we had to be the first to show you it via sneaky Instagram shots.

Rosie is seen relaxing in a laundrette in one snap, although she doesn't look like she's been focusing on her chores, as she kicks back in a pair of red stilettos and rests her toned pins across a trolley full of clothes.

The photos, taken by snapper James Macari, were posted by Sarah GoreReeves, fashion director for Vogue Mexico, who gushed about the model in a series of hashtags.

The blonde star, 27, looks incredible in the patterned one piece and a long red coat, showing off a perfect blow dry with her hair in a side parting and a huge red necklace on.

Rosie is seen lying back next to a takeaway pizza but we can't imagine she scoffed much of it, unless she's like Cara Delevingne, who seems to be able to eat loads of fast food and still have an amazing figure.

Hmmm meat feast pizza, anyway, back to Rosie...

We've had a sneak peak at the rest of the shoot and she's seen in other shots sucking on an ice lolly, showing off some serious cleavage and sitting on top of a washing machine looking all seductive.

The gazelle-like star appears on the front of the magazine in a classy dark red suit and huge gold necklace.

She would certainly turn heads if she walked into a Laundrette in London looking like that.

Red faced Home Ministry explains seizure

The release of the material would depend on the pastor involved proving that he had a scheduled flight to Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: Religious items including CDs seized last Sat at KLIA2 from a Christian pastor on the way home to Sabah from Medan, Northern Sumatra, will be released if certain conditions are met.

We are trying to ascertain if he was bringing it to Semenanjung or taking it to Sabah and if hes on transit, why was it (the material) in the main terminal? asked Hashimah Nik Jaafar who heads the Home Ministrys Publications Control and Al-Quran Text Unit. We are trying to get verification from Customs and the person involved.

She was stressing in a media update that the Home Ministry doesnt confiscate Christian material if they are meant for Sabah and Sarawak. So we have to determine whether these books and CDs were really meant for Sabah and Sarawak or they were being brought into the peninsula, she added.

She explained that the procedures for import of Christian material into the peninsula and Borneo were different.

In the case of Borneo, theres no need to seek written approval from the Home Ministry.

For the peninsula, importers of such material would have to seek written approval from the Home Ministry. However, no such approval would be given. Instead, the Home Ministry would write back to say that a certain number of the materials can be brought in.

Revisiting the seizure last Sat, Hashimah belaboured the point that the release of the material would depend on the pastor involved proving that he had a scheduled flight to Sabah.

If the person was really taking the material to Sabah, he has to produce his air ticket. We would release the material to him when he was leaving KLIA, she claimed.

Maklin Masiau, the pastor at the centre of the storm, wrote in a FaceBook posting: Even though I pleaded with them not to seize my things with all kinds of concrete reasons, they were steadfast in seizing them. Their main reason for the seizure was that the books and the CDs contained the word Allah.
