Missing 1-year-old Liberty County boy found in hospital ER

Police located a missing Liberty County 1-year-old in a hosputal emergency room in Louisiana around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Colt Williams had beentaken about 6 p.m. Friday from his mother by the child's stepfather, Wayne Ross Maitland. The abduction was part of a domestic dispute between Maitland and his wife, officials said.

Liberty County sheriff's deputies said Maitland taped his wife's hands together and said she would have to watch him commit suicide. He ran a hose from the tailpipe into the family's car. The child's mother managed to jump out of the car. But her son was still inside as Maitland drove away.

The car, a 2006 black four-door Infinity, was last seen driving along County Road 622 toward County Road 686.

The child was dropped off at a hospital emergency room, where staff heard him crying. He was found safe and unharmed, officials said.

Maitland had fled the hospital and is still being sought by authorities in that area.

Liberty Band of Marion plays songs of the Civil War

MARION For members of the Liberty Band of Marion, learning new songs hasnt been as simple as reading sheet music.

The group is a Civil War re-enactment band, and they play authentic antique instruments that havent been manufactured in a very long time. The 130 -to -160 -year -old brass horns they play dont exist in mainstream music anymore.

Though theyre all experienced musicians, each member had to start their time with the Liberty Band by simply figuring out how to play those instruments.

Band founder Steve Sprague, 64, of Marion, decided to form the band after he bought a Civil War-era horn on eBay. The instrument, the music written for it and the pitch it plays didnt mesh with any existing bands he found. So he decided to start his own.

The Liberty Band is one of 40 to 50 Civil War re-enactment bands in the U.S. and the only one in Iowa that plays on antique instruments, Sprague says. Another Iowa group, the Marengo Civil War Band, plays modern versions of the music on contemporary instruments.

I knew if I wanted a band where I could play my antique horn in my lifetime, I was going to have to go out and find these instruments, Sprague says.

Sprague and his wife Sue began gathering instruments, music and band members three years ago. They hunted down the instruments from dealers and collectors and even on Craigslist. The band has bought instruments from four other countries and several U.S. states.

Theres a certain adventure in finding the instruments, Sprague says. Sometimes you find one thats out of this world and nobody knows what it is.

Lone Libertarian looks to claim state rep seat

A Libertarian state representative candidate has not been elected in New Hampshire in 14 years, but Lisa Wilber is persistent.

She was not elected when she first ran for state representative in 2000 or in each consecutive election since then but she continues to run on the Libertarian Party ticket, this year for the eighth time.

Wilber, 51, of Weare is the only state representative candidate running as a registered Libertarian in New Hampshire this year, although she said that other libertarians are running as either Democrats or Republicans.

She is seeking a state representative seat in Hillsborough County District 2 which serves Deering and Weare against three Democrats and three Republicans, including two incumbents. Republican Christine Ivinjack is also running a write-in campaign for a seat in the district; Ivinjack, a Weare resident, ran in the September primary election but did not receive enough votes to get on the ballot.

Three state representative seats are open in the district.

They make it so hard to be anything but the two parties, and the two parties arent that different anymore, Wilber said. If I wanted to run as a Democrat or Republican, you just go up to the town hall and pay $2.

Wilber said that as a third party candidate, in addition to paying the $2 administrative assessment fee, she had to collect 150 signatures before she could file her candidacy.

You have to go through so much to run as a Libertarian, she said.

Steve Vaillancourt was the last Libertarian candidate elected to a state representative seat. Vaillancourt was elected to represent Hillsborough County District 44 Manchester Ward 8 in the 2000 general election; he currently represents the same ward (now Hillsborough Country District 15) as a Republican.

The Libertarian Partys slogan is minimum government, maximum freedom. Wilbers personal platform is focused on freedom and personal responsibility.
