Anti-terror laws undermine democracy

October 2014 will go down as the month in which the federal Parliament made some of its greatest ever inroads into freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Ironically, this occurred only weeks after our politicians extolled the virtues of these freedoms in the debate over section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.

It is disturbing that our political leaders have moved so quickly from this to anti-terror measures that impose lengthy jail terms for journalists and others who speak about matters of public importance. It reveals a shallow adherence to freedom of speech, and an unwelcome, authoritarian streakon behalf of the government and the opposition when it comes to restricting democratic freedoms.

Most of the attention has focused on section 35P of the first anti-terrorism bill passed on October 1. This provision says: "A person commits an offence if the person discloses information and the information relates to a special intelligence operation." The penalty is jail of up to five years, or 10 years if, for example, the disclosure prejudices a special intelligence operation.

As Attorney General George Brandis has said, section 35P "applies generally to all citizens". It does not discriminate between people who seek to harm our security by revealing secret information, and journalists and whistleblowers who shine a spotlight on government wrongdoing, incompetence or even the death of an Australian citizen at the hands of an intelligence officer.

It is not easy for journalists to know whether they are complying with this law. Special intelligence operations are by their nature covert, and the information that cannot be disclosed covers these operations and anything that "relates to" them. This means that the ban extends to other, connected operations by ASIO and agencies such as the Australian Federal Police.

All this can create doubt in the mind of a journalist about whether they can publish a story. They may decide not to do so on the basis that it is better to be safe than sorry. Governments and agencies can exploit this zone of uncertainty by warning off journalists so as to prevent the publication of compromising information.

Brandis has defended section 35P by saying that it is not intended to apply to journalists. If this is the case, it is easy to fix the provision. He should sponsor an amendment that exempts the disclosure of information that is part of a media report in the public interest.

Instead, the Attorney General will direct federal prosecutors to consult with him on any charges laid against journalists. He has said that prosecutions against journalists will only proceed with his consent.

NZ Eco Fashion to showcase at Undress Brisbane

PRESS RELEASE

6/10/14

NZ Eco Fashion to showcase at Undress Brisbane

Three NZ eco fashion designers will showcase their collections at the upcoming Undress Runways event in Brisbane on October 11.

Senorita AweSUMO and Melanie Child of Dunedin, and HIX of Wellington have been selected to runway alongside other Australian emerging and established designers at Australias largest sustainable fashion event Undress Brisbane.

Senorita AweSUMO, a zero waste lifestyle brand will present Basix - a range of garments that can be made from reclaimed or repurposed fabric, and brings together Senorita AweSUMO's key beliefs of waste reduction with easy to wear original designs. The collection can be manufactured through the current fashion system, and utilises draping techniques, zero waste pattern making, pre consumer waste and found fabrics.

Melanie Child is a high end upcycled clothing label dedicated to the creative redesign of pre-loved clothing, with the underlying inspiration for the label coming from a simultaneous aversion and fascination with mass production and its by-products. Melanies collection entitled Inertia is constructed entirely from existing garments such as shirts, jeans, mens tailored jackets and tshirts and is a reference to the current state of the fashion industry and the unsustainable practises of the fast fashion cycle.

Anna Hicks of HIX is a fashion textile artist and will be showcasing her graduate collection Metamorphostitch. The concept for her collection was to use traditional and contemporary hand craft tehcniques as a way of opposing the fast fashion system whilst also challenging stereotypical views of craft as a domestic hobby. Using all second hand materials with a focus on wool, her collection uses exausht dye techniques to achieve bright colours and bold shapes resulting in a decorative, sustainable and thought provoking collection.

The three designers also runwayed at the recent NZ Eco Fashion Exposed in Lower Hutt in July of this year.

Undress Runways will take place on Saturday, 11 October 2014 from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (AEST) in West End, QLD

Injury forces Cris Cyborg off Invicta 10; new main event announced

Invicta will make its Houston debut on Dec. 5. But it will do so without Cris "Cyborg" Justino.

Justino, the former Strikeforce featherweight champion, was slated to return to action at Invicta 10, but had to pull out due to a rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament in her left ankle.

Invicta president Shannon Knapp indicated Saturday that Justino's injury occurred three weeks ago, but the company decided to wait on the severity of the injury before making the change.

In Justino's place, Invicta 10 will be headlined by "The Karate Hottie," Michelle Waterson. Waterson (12-3) will defend her atomweight title against Brazil's Herica Tiburcio (8-2).

Waterson, a Jackson's MMA fighter, defeated Jessica Penne for the title in 2013, and made her first defense against Yasuko Tamada in September. Ten of her 12 wins have come by way of finish.

The 22-year-old Tiburcio has won three in a row. Six of her wins have come by way of submission.

Also on Invicta 10, Vanessa Porto will square off against Roxanne Modafferi, and Tonya Evinger will face Cindy Dandois.

Weather service: Dangerous rip currents at beaches through Tuesday

1:50 p.m. update: The risk of rip currents at Palm Beach County beaches will remain high through Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said Sunday afternoon.

Dangerous rip currents are expected along Atlantic Coast beaches today and Monday, fueled by north winds blowing at about 15 mph and gusting to 25 mph, the weather service said. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water.

Windy conditions will continue at least into Wednesday, the weather service said.

Sundays daytime high temperature will be near 70 degrees, and the overnight low will be near 60 degrees.

Original post: The trick-or-treat leftovers are still in the bowl and yet its positively wintry frigid in South Florida terms outside. At 8 a.m., the National Weather Service reports its 49 degrees out there. Todays high is 71 and it likely wont feel warmer than the 60s thanks to some gusty northeast winds.

That 49 degrees breakds the record for this day of 51 set in 1993, according to the weather service records. And with a forecast high of 71, it looks like were destined to get the coolest high temperature for the day as well, breaking the record of 72 degrees set in 1964.

Todays winds will blow at about 15 mph and gust to about 25 mph, according to the weather service.

The weather service said there is a high risk of rip currents at Palm Beach County beaches through Monday morning. Beaches in Martin and St. Lucie counties face a moderate risk that may grow later in the day as the tides shift. Swimmers are urged only to go into the water at beaches with lifeguards.

Sunday nights low temperature will be around 60 degrees from Boca Raton to Fort Pierce.

A similar pattern is expected through Wednesday, when the chances for rain rise to about 20 percent, the weather service said.

New Auckland bylaw bans public fireworks

Letting off fireworks on Auckland's parks, beaches or public places could cost you $20,000.

The new bylaw banning fireworks in public areas was introduced this year and applies to anyone setting off crackers, flares or other explosive material without written council approval.

It was designed to protect people, animals and property from the "nuisance" of fireworks, Councillor Cathy Casey said. She said it would curb the amount of litter at beaches and parks and reduce the amount of grief caused for people's pets.

"Fireworks amount to three weeks of hell for some people.

"Their dog has to be kept in at night because of the noise, the commotion."

* Fireworks sales ban to be considered

* Fireworks night: Your views

Casey urged people to contact council or police to report rule-breakers. She said council officers and police had the power to confiscate fireworks, and if it was serious enough, they could pursue prosecutionsunder the local government act, to lead to a maximum $20,000 fine.

Senior Fire Risk Management Officer Mike McEnaney said he welcomed the move.

He said there were instances each year of fires starting in public places.

Wipro to set up digital pods to push automation

The author has posted comments on this articleShilpa Phadnis, TNN | Nov 3, 2014, 05.14AM IST BANGALORE: Wipro's new initiatives in automation and artificial intelligence will involve establishment of what it calls digital pods. And there will be four of them one each Bangalore, London, in the San Francisco Bay Area, and another elsewhere in Asia.

The digital pod will be like an innovation lab with giant digital screens simulating applications in a live-use case scenario. The four pods are part of India's third-largest IT company's newly-carved division Wipro Digital that offers customers digital capabilities through strategy, design and technology.

"The idea behind a digital pod is that we can sit together with our customers and demonstrate to them what can be achieved by throwing in some artificial intelligence tools into their business processes. In many cases, we would also be working with them to fine-tune the tools to make the processes more automated and efficient," Wipro CEO T K Kurien said. He added it would be possible to simulate the end-to-end experience on the interactive screen.

Wipro focuses on the execution of digital transformation agendas at scale, starting from the customer touch point to the entire back-office process. Most large IT and technology firms are carving out separate digital units, deploying automation and artificial intelligence tools. Accenture recently launched the Accenture Digital Services.

"Wipro's big focus is investing in open-source computing, digital transformation services, artificial intelligence and advanced technologies consulting and managed services. There is direct interest from the CEO downwards (for cognitive computing and automation) and have specific investments in this space, but they have been shy to launch anything officially," said Phil Fersht, CEO of US-based research and consultancy firm HfS Research, who has been following the company closely.

'I get it if you don't make money for 2 or 3 years, but Amazon's 21'

QuoTW The EU's digital office has warned this week that Hungary's proposed tax on ISPs can't become a precedent in Europe. Ryan Heath, spokesperson for digital czar Steelie Neelie Kroes, told El Reg:

This must be seen in a wider context as part of a pattern to limit media and internet freedom. That is why it is so important to tackle this now before a law is enacted. We have seen the pattern in Hungary where they announce a very tough law and then they moderate it in an effort to seem reasonable. But we cannot allow this issue to fade away.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban plans to impose a tax on internet service providers of around 0.50 per gigabyte of data that travels over their networks, capping it at about 2.26 a month for individuals. Heath said that the tax was wrong and could force folk off the 'net:

It wont work, because you cannot tax a global common resource like the internet unilaterally. Furthermore, by targeting data they are getting it doubly wrong, because its impossible to predict data flows!

Thousands of protestors took to the streets in peaceful protest over the tax this week. One protestor told The Reg:

As a symbol of independence and importance of the media, we were holding our cellphones in the air, emphasising that we will remain connected, no matter what law they to put in place.

Meanwhile, ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has lost none of his outspoken ways now that he's left Redmond. In an interview with Charlie Rose, Ballmer said that Amazon wasn't a real company because it had failed to make any profit in two decades:

They make no money, Charlie. In my world, you're not a real business until you make some money. I have a hard time with businesses that don't make money at some point.

I get it if you don't make money for two or three years, but Amazon's what 21 years old and not making money.

If I was a share owner, it's an expensive company market cap of $150bn almost eventually, if you're worth $150bn, eventually somebody thinks you're gonna make $15bn pre-tax and they make about zero, and there's a big gap between zero and 15.
