Banks, Bitcoin & the Blockchain

The Bitcoin Blockchain could offer benefits to banks that are willing to experiment with it.

The modern financial system has a fundamental problem: Its not designed for the Internet. Even though money and transactions are becoming increasingly digitized, we keep using payments rails that were originally designed for paper checks. And, in some ways, the financial system is less than compatible with the online world people are shopping and transacting in.

A good example of this conundrum is how the Internet has affected payments security. JPMorgan Chase, which suffered a data breach this past summer, will likely double its $250 million annual cyber security budget in the next five years. Our payments rails just werent built with advanced persistent threat attacks and malware in mind.

All of the work that people are doing in cyber security, its really people are trying to patch for that problem that our financial system wasnt built for the Internet, Will OBrien, CEO of BitGo, said yesterday at a Money2020 panel on how traditional payments players can dabble in Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was built for the Internet. Strip away the currency aspect and look at the technology behind Bitcoin, and you have the first Internet protocol for storing and exchanging value. And that protocol leverages the Blockchain, the first open-source financial database that records everything that happens on the Bitcoin network and verifies all of that activity with a third party. The implications of the Blockchain technology could go well beyond payments. So there are opportunities for companies beyond Bitcoin startups to leverage it.

Bitcoin is potentially the most important technology innovation of our lifetime. It has such far-reaching potential, Cedric Dahl, CEO of Buttercoin, remarked. The Blockchain has enabled something that has never been possible before: Two people who dont know or trust each other can agree that they trust each other with something.

The Bitcoin Blockchain could be used to verify more than just possession of funds for Bitcoin transactions. It could be leveraged to verify all sorts of records like legal documents. Or it could be used to verify the credit-worthiness of unbanked or underbanked individuals, Adam Ludwin, CEO of Chain.com, commented.

[For more on alternative uses of Bitcoin, check out: Exploring New Use Cases for Bitcoin.]

The real value of the anonymity of Bitcoin is that you dont need to know your customer. The Blockchain can substitute for the credit-worthiness of an individual. It can enfranchise people and bring them on to the financial grid, Ludwin said.

It might not lookas ifthese things are possible yet, as Bitcoin is still in its early days. And Bitcoin companies acknowledge that more innovation is necessary for the Blockchain technology to reach its full potential.

Online Drug Dealers Are Now Accepting Darkcoin, Bitcoins Stealthier Cousin

When the cryptocurrency darkcoin launched earlier this year, it distinguished itself from dozens of bitcoin copycats by promising to keep users transactions far more anonymous than its predecessor. Now that promise is being tested in the Internets fastest-growing proving ground for privacy technologies: the online black market for drugs.

Over the last month, two of the dark web markets selling an anonymous, mail-order catalog of narcotics and other contraband have begun supporting darkcoin transactions. On a site called Nucleus, visitors can now use darkcoin to buy LSD, MDMA, and marijuana. On the competing market Diabolus, dealers accept it for cocaine, synthetic stimulants like ethylone and alpha-PVP, and even counterfeit Euros. Those two markets still represent only a tiny fraction of the growing dark web drug economymost of which uses bitcoin exclusively. But darkcoins entrance could signal a new means of transaction in that underground industry, and one thats far harder for law enforcement to trace.

Using [darkcoin] on Diabolus is no more difficult than using bitcoin, and we hope that this currency will receive more adoption because of its superior anonymity, a Diabolus administrator known as Accida wrote on the Reddit forum devoted to dark net markets two weeks ago. Ultimately, Diabolus cares about protecting your security and anonymity, and well consistently take action to maintain it as best we can.

Darkcoin is designed to scramble any attempts at blockchain tracing. Darkcoin users can, whenever they want, swap their coins with two other users, a process known as CoinJoin. That exchange is organized by a so-called Master Node, one of the servers that runs the darkcoin network in exchange for periodic payments in the currency. And since that coordination of CoinJoin transactions is protected by encryption, its nearly impossible for an outside observer to match up darkcoin payments with anyones identity.

Despite all of that, darkcoins creator Evan Duffield says hes never intended darkcoin to be used for dark web drug sales. But he cant stop drug vendors from being attracted to its privacy properties. Yes, it was accepted and implemented by these two markets. I cant really control that, he says. The goal has always been to make a currency thats privacy-centric and is more for mass consumer base types of things. Its not just for buying drugs online.

But he still sees Diabolus and Nucleus adoption of darkcoin as a positive sign for his budding currency system. Bitcoin, he points out, got an early boost from Silk Road, which accepted it long before more mainstream vendors like Dell and Overstock.com. Duffield points to dozens of websites that already accept darkcoin payments, many in exchange for private web hosting or VPN services to encrypt and anonymize internet traffic. Early on with bitcoin the only thing you could do with it was gamble and buy drugs. Then it got past that and was accepted on many sites all over the internet, says Duffield. The same thing is happening with darkcoin.

Adoption by the narcotics underground could give darkcoin a needed injection of demand: A speculative bubble brought darkcoins price to more than $13 in May, making it the second-most valuable cryptocurrency after bitcoin at the time. But since then, its exchange rate has plummeted back to less than $2; all existing darkcoins are now worth close to $8 million.

Booms and bust in value, however, have never mattered to the privacy-sensitive dark net economy as much as they do to cryptocurrency speculators. A currencys privacy properties, after all, have little to do with its dollar value, as the black market Silk Road administrator known as the Dread Pirate Roberts said after a bitcoin crash in 2013. Bitcoins foundation, its algorithms and network, dont change with the exchange rate, he wrote in a message at the time. It is just as important to the functioning of Silk Road at $1 as it is at $1,000. That may be even more true of darkcoin, which is specifically designed to allow anonymous transactions.

Since the FBI takedown of the Silk Road in October of last year, next-generation cryptomarkets have been evolving and experimenting, using features like multi-signature transactions and even peer-to-peer selling systems to better protect transactions from surveillance. But bitcoins fundamental privacy problems persist. Darkcoin, along with other anonymous money projects like Dark Wallet and the still-in-development cryptocurrency Zerocoin could change that.

Comets Support Fight Against EEE, And More

NEW HAVEN, NY The Oswego County Comets are never ready to end the riding season; however, with the cold air that is soon to be upon us, we had the time to catch up on some unfinished business.

Oswego County Comets

In this photo are members of the Oswego County Comets Motorcycle Riding Club presenting a sizable donation check to Mike Wilcox, of The MSGW Foundation (Maggie Sue Glenister Wilcox), to help in its continuing efforts towards the research and development of a human vaccine for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, also know as EEE.

The Comets are dedicated to the camaraderie of all motorcycle enthusiasts and in helping our local community.

This year, the Comets will again be giving gift cards at Thanksgiving and Christmas to families in our local area in need of a little assistance during the holidays.

In addition, we will once again hold our annual canned food drive.

Canned goods can be dropped off at the home of the Comets, Hazzys Tavern in New Haven, or at Custom Novelty Prints in Mexico anytime during business hours.

Please help us to help our friends and neighbors.

The Comets celebrates the 10th anniversary of our re-founding this year and we are very proud to say that in those 10 years we have been able to help our community with more than $20,000 in donations that have been made to our local ambulance service, fire departments, non-profit organizations, animal shelters, kidney foundation and for breast cancer awareness, as well as many individuals and families.

The Comets wish to thank all that have helped us help others in our community and we look forward to your continued support.

Comets lose final game

Scrantons defense limited Abington Heights to 65 yards of total offense and Jacob Watts scored two touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 16-3 win over the Comets in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 game at Scranton Memorial Stadium on Friday.

This was one of our better defensive games, said Scranton head coach Mike Marichak. We had a couple shutouts, but tonight I thought we put some pressure on the quarterback and they couldnt run the ball. I think, upfront, we did a nice job.

Scranton kicker Alvaro Fernandez capped a 9-play, 63-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal to give the Knights a 3-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter.

Comets kicker Colin McCreary tied the game, 3-3, with a 24-yard field goal to cap a 4-play, 16-yard drive with 9:50 remaining in the second quarter. Sam Radkiewiczs 34 yard punt return helped set up the score.

An interception by defensive back Damel Wright set the Knights up at the Comets 25-yard line with 7:05 left in the second quarter, but three consecutive stops for losses, including a sack by Joe Arcangelo on fourth down, ended Scrantons scoring threat.

Scranton (7-3, 6-1 LFC Div. 1) had another scoring opportunity stopped by the Comets when defensive back Jake Henzes intercepted Scranton quarterback Anthony Tooson at the Comets 25-yard line with 1:20 remaining in the first half.

Scranton regained the lead when Watts ended an 11-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:25 left in the fourth quarter. Tooson connected with Dylan Granahan for 18 yards on a 3rd-and-10 play from the 19 to set up the score. Fernandezs extra point made the score 10-3.

Abington Heights (4-6, 2-5) linebacker Collin Huggler intercepted Tooson on the Knights next drive and returned the ball into Scranton territory, but the Comets couldnt convert the turnover into points.

Im extremely proud of these players, Abington Heights head coach Joe Repshis said. They have been resilient all year.

After an interception by Knights defensive back Ramon Fields, Watts carried the ball all seven plays of Scrantons 50-yard drive and scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run to stretch the lead to 16-3 with 2:48 remaining in the game.

Flames Drop 5-4 Nailbiter to Comets

November 1, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Adirondack Flames Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Flames' three game winning streak on home ice ended in a 5-4 loss to the Utica Comets on Saturday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Emile Poirier skated in his first game of the season and scored two goals, a career-high. Bill Arnold also recorded a career-high with two assists. Brad Thiessen made 20 saves on 22 shots in relief of Joni Ortio, who took the loss.

The Utica Comets opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game as Brandon DeFazio beat Adirondack goaltender Joni Ortio with an assist from Darren Archibald. Less than two minutes later the Comets struck again, as Nicklas Jensen extended the Utica advantage to two. Alex Biega and Cal O'Reilly were credited with the assists.

The Flames had two power play opportunities in the first period but were unable to capitalize. Moments after the second man advantage expired, Poirier sent a rocket past Utica goalie Joacim Eriksson 14:38 into the period to cut the Comets' lead to 2-1. It was Poirier's first goal in his first game of the season. Arnold and Patrick Sieloff recorded assists, Sieloff's first point as a professional.

Moments later, Utica re-extended their lead to two goals, as Peter Andersson slipped one past Ortio from the point with an assist from Bobby Sanguinetti, After Utica's third goal, Brad Thiessen took over as netminder for the Flames. Ortio finished his night with eight saves on 11 shots.

In the second period, the Comets capitalized on the power play after Bryce Van Brabant was whistled for hooking. Alexandre Grenier buried the goal off of a nice backdoor feed from O'Reilly. Nicklas Jensen had the secondary helper as the Comets took their largest lead of the night at 4-1.

Despite a three-goal disadvantage, the Flames did not sit back as Poirier doubled his pleasure. Just over a minute after Grenier's tally, Poirier got one past Eriksson off of a quick pass from Bill Arnold to shorten Utica's lead 4-2. Defenseman Dustin Stevenson was also credited with an assist on the goal, his fifth point of the season.

Utica answered back with its fifth goal of the night to push its lead to 5-2 thanks to Carter Bancks. After a scramble in front of Thiessen, Bancks found space on the back post and was able to chop the puck past. Wacey Hamilton recorded the lone assist on the play.

On Adirondack's fourth power play of the night, a quick-thinking Thiessen sent an outlet pass to Max Reinhart, who Fed Van Brabant who snapped a shot past Thiessen to cut the deficit to 5-3. The point was the first of the season for Thiessen and his first since the 2011-12 season.

Minutes later, at the 15:50 of the second period, Ben Hanowski took a feed from Corban Knight in the slot and sent it into the net to pull the Flames within one goal at 5-4. Winger Sven Baertschi recorded an assist on the goal, his second in as many games.

Africa tourist chiefs defy Ebola fears

African countries at a world travel exhibition have presented a united front in the battle to woo tourists back to the continent following the Ebola crisis.

Ebola-hit country Sierra Leone pulled out of World Travel Market in London but two other West African countries, Nigeria and Senegal, where the outbreak is deemed to be over, were at the exhibition in London's Docklands.

Senegal hopes this year's tourist numbers are not too badly hit by the health crisis.

"We have a lot to offer visitors," said Ms Houma Dia, the marketing and communication director of the Senegalese Tourism Promotion Agency.

She flew to London for WTM at which Senegal is exhibiting for the first time in four years.

Another who travelled from West Africa was Ms Bolanle Osute, the marketing and communication director for the Keystone Bank, which is a partner of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation.

"Ebola has not stopped people wanting to come to Nigeria," she said.

Two other Ebola-suffering countries, Guinea and Liberia, do not take part in WTM.

There has been concern the crisis could affect not only West African tourism but visitor levels throughout Africa. At WTM Kenya Tourism Board was buoyant about tourism prospects, revealing that the East African country received nearly 150,000 British visitors in 2013.

Last week, the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) said worldwide tourist numbers increased five per cent in the first eight months of this year, with northern Europe one of the highest growth areas.

70 tourism firms for London World Fair

Monday, November 03 14:16:46

70 Irish tourism businesses together with Tourism Ireland and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring are in London today at the world's largest travel fair.

Their presence at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London today heralds the beginning of the promotional drive overseas for the 2015 season.

Now in its 35th year, World Travel Market is the largest B2B event in the global travel and tourism calendar, with about 50,000 travel industry professionals from around the world and 3,000 influential international media in attendance.

According to the organisers of WTM, more than Stg2.2 billion's (approximately E2.8 billion's) worth of business was transacted at the event in 2013. This year, some 70 Irish tourism enterprises - including hotels, visitor attractions, ferry companies, coach companies, incoming tour operators, hostels and activity providers - are exhibiting at the Tourism Ireland stand. Over the next four days, they will engage in thousands of meetings with British and international tour operators as they negotiate and exchange vital contracts for 2015.

With more than 180 countries and regions all vying for business at WTM this week, Tourism Ireland aims to stand out from the crowd and capture the attention of the global media and travel trade in attendance - highlighting the unique offerings of the island of Ireland for potential visitors around the world.

The latest CSO figures for overseas visitors to Ireland are very strong, confirming growth of 9.3pc in overseas visitors to Ireland for the January to September period more than 500,000 additional visitors when compared with the same nine-month period in 2013. Government initiatives - including the reduction of the air travel tax to zero (which has helped increase key air routes to Ireland), as well as the retention of VAT on tourism services at 9pc (helping to make Ireland more competitive in terms of value for money), have played a significant role in helping grow visitor numbers. The recent launch of the British-Irish Visa Scheme is also significant, as it will mean Chinese and Indian visitors will be able - for the first time - to visit both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, on a single visa of either country.

Minister Michael Ring said: "I am highly impressed with the level of business being done by the tourism industry at this year's World Travel Market, particularly at the Ireland Stand, where I have seen tourism enterprises from all parts of Ireland conducting hundreds of business meetings and doing a great job of selling tourism to the global travel trade. The Government believes strongly in the importance of tourism as a vehicle for Irish economic recovery, and we are committed to supporting the tourism industry's efforts to increase Ireland's export earnings from overseas tourism."

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: "The large representation of Irish tourism companies on the Tourism Ireland stand at World Travel Market this year is extremely welcome and essential in the highly competitive global marketplace."
