The continuing collapse of the First Amendment. Do you care?

This nation's leading rescuer of the First Amendment arguing before the Supreme Court, attorney Floyd Abrams, now warns of another rising danger.

Speaking on Oct. 23 at the 15th anniversary of FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), he warned the only organization as actively devoted to the First Amendment as he is about the damage to free speech caused by college campuses retracting invitations to public speakers.

"If litigation (as FIRE is doing) is one necessary tactic to deal with such speech-limiting policies, the other is simply exposure of the misconduct, with the attendant public shame that follows the exposure."

What, after all, other than shame, is deserved by Brandeis University for offering and then withdrawing an honorary degree to Ayaan Hirst Ali for her criticism of Islam; by Smith College for withdrawing an invitation to Christine Lagarde, the first woman to head the IMG (International Monetary Fund); by Rutgers, for so embarrassing former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that she declined to appear.

"And just a few weeks ago, George Will's invitation to speak at Scripps College in California was effectively withdrawn after controversy over the invitation. "

Before continuing, I must proudly acknowledge that Floyd Abrams has been my personal First Amendment mentor for decades. He continues with a concern I've written about often here:

"What's going on? It's hard to resist the conclusion that too many of our college students evidently needed high school civics courses since they seem to have no idea what the basic thrust of the First Amendment -- and free expression more broadly -- is all about."

Abrams continues: "And they are not alone. It shows me how many people -- educated people, including scholars -- seem to believe that the First Amendment should be interpreted as nothing but an extension and embodiment of their generally liberal political views."

Floyd then speaks to all of us, not just the audience that evening at the FIRE anniversary. What he says is not being taught in the great majority of our public schools as he quoted Justice Robert Jackson:

"The very purpose of a Bill of Rights is to foreclose public authority from assuming a guardianship of the public mind through regulating the press, speech and religion. "

Bitcoin servers go up in smoke in a very modern mining disaster

Mining Bitcoin may not carry the same risks as traveling deep underground to chip away at rocks, but its by no means worry-free. In a very 21st century mining disaster, a Bitcoin facility in Thailand suffered a serious fire that left servers and other hardware out of action the kit was reportedly uninsured too, so mining operations will be on hold for some time.

It looks like the incident happened back in October, though news of the blaze has only just surfaced. Details are pretty sketchybutthere are images and a discussion of the incident on a lengthy discussion thread at Bitcoin Forum, while local media reports say the fire affected an area of a couple of acres and was under control in 30 minutes. From the details that we have it looks like the cost of the damage will run into the millions of dollars.

The cause of the fire hasnt been confirmed various theories have been suggested and rebuffed by the parties involved, and arson hasnt been ruled out as a possibility but its a timely reminder of the risks involved with any large scale data server storage. While the big companies like Google, Apple and Facebook may make data centers look easy, thats far from the case.

As CoinDesk reports, the facility was operated by mining cooperative Cowboyminers and used kit supplied by Spondoolies-Tech and Innosilicon. No one was injured in the blaze but the damage will take some time and a significant amount of cash to repair on-site operators are currently trying to salvage what hardware they can from the ashes.

After peaking at $1,147.25 late last year, one Bitcoin is worth $341.71 today. While the crypto-currency hasnt attracted the same kind of headlines and coverage as it did at the start of 2014, it looks like its here for the long-term: Google recently opened up a Bitcoin ATM at its London headquarters, and the virtual currency is accepted at a number of high-profile retailers.

Comets Defeat Mustangs in Chicago

November 8, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets The Missouri Comets earned their second straight victory of the season after defeating the reigning PASL Champions Chicago Mustangs 12-6 at the Sears Centre on Saturday night.

For the second time this season, last year's MISL top scorer Leo Gibson tallied four goals and seven different players scored for the Comets.

Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team was too much of a challenge for the Mustangs who had not lost a game in over a year as they went undefeated last season ending with an overall record of 16-0.

Throughout the four quarters, Chicago had a hard time containing the Comets' offense and were unable to possess the ball in the first half, which saw the visitors take a 6-1 to the locker rooms.

Missouri went up early in the game after team captain Vahid Assadpour scored his fourth of the season before Andre Braithwaite and Brian Harris found the back of the net along with a shootout conversion from the home squad to end the quarter 3-1.

The second quarter saw Gibson score the fourth of the night before Max Touloute tallied his first of the season to make it 5-1. Moments before the end of the first half, Braithwaite notched his second of the match to end the second quarter with a score of 6-1.

After Gibson and Matingou increased the lead and made it 8-1 in the first five minutes of the third quarter, Head Coach Armando Gamboa's team scored two goals in a one-minute span but Stefan Stokic scored his first of the season to end the quarter 10-3.

The final fifteen minutes saw a total of five goals scored. The Mustangs shortened Missouri's lead with goals from Baca and Ortega. However, a rocket from Harris and a PK conversion from Gibson ended the match with a final score of 12-6.

"They were the better team tonight," Gamboa said. "I can give you a thousand excuses but we simply didn't play as a team in the first half, which cost us the match."

Next up, the Comets will face the Milwaukee Wave in the home opener at the Independence Events Center.
