The Risks Of Buying Bitcoin

A new product, technology, or innovation such as Bitcoin has the potential to give rise both to frauds and high-risk investment opportunities. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency on the virtual block, has garnered much attention since it was first created in the year 2009. It is an internet currency involving a person to person payment and operates without a third party (bank or central authority) and do not enjoy government backing. Despite not being legal tender, Bitcoin charts high on popularity and its has triggered the launch of many virtual currencies collectively referred to as Altcoins. Thus Bitcoin has played the role of a trend setter for the likes ofLitecoin, Feathercoin, Dogecoin, Zetacoin, Peercoin, MazaCoin, Novacoin, etc.

Those who endorse this digital currency are of the view that it facilitates a much faster, no-fee payment system for transactions across the globe. The virtual currency can be exchanged for traditional currencies and its exchange rate against the dollar attracts potential investors. While this new investment space promises high returns, it still has many risks tagged to it, which should be considered before purchasing Bitcoins. Many investor alerts have been issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and other agencies to make inventors aware of the potential risks involved in Bitcoin investment. The major risks associated with Bitcoins are listed below:

The concept of a virtual currency introduced by Bitcoin is novel and cutting edge but because of being a recent invention, there is no track record or history of credibility to back it. Bitcoins along with otherdigital currencies are in a development phase, still evolving. That said, with their increasing use, Bitcoins are becoming less experimental. Still, they carry high risk and are not meant for risk averse investors. (See: Basics For Buying And Investing In Bitcoin)

There is high speed in the technology space and there is huge competition for Bitcoin already, with more than 100 such currencies. Though Bitcoin has a huge lead (because of its brand recognition andventure capital money),technological break-through in the form of a better digital currency is a big threat to this cryptocurrency.

Theunpredictable price movement of Bitcoin over a short period of time adds to its riskiness. The factors that cause volatility are high volume buying and selling on exchanges instigated by hidden motives, news regarding its acceptance with merchants, government regulations and laws. The digital currency has high sensitivity to news as it tends to guide the peoples reaction and outlook towards it. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the price of Bitcoins fell by 61% in a single day in 2013, while the one-day price drop in 2014 has been as big as 80%. (Related reading: Why Is Bitcoin's Value So Volatile?)

Different approaches are being applied by various countries indealing with Bitcoin. The lack of properly laid out, uniform regulations about Bitcoins (and other virtual currency) increases the uncertainty regarding their future. Many government authorities are concerned about the use of Bitcoins for speculative trading, money laundering, andcrime (like buying and selling of drugs and other illegal items).

However, with the growing popularity of Bitcoins, government agencies are coming up with proposals regarding Bitcoin and other virtual currencies. The New York State Department of Financial Services proposed regulations that would require companies dealing with the buy, sell, transfer or storage of Bitcoins to record the identity of customers. The Bitcoin transactions will have to be recorded and reported in case of transactions are worth $10,000 or more. In March 2014, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) decided that Bitcoins will be treated as property for tax purposes.

Tax laws and regulations regarding Bitcoins are still involving and will witness many metamorphoses before the final version is decided. The riskiness in holding Bitcoins is because of the uncertainty of the course that the authorities may take to deal with it, which raises questions over its longevity and usability. (See: Bitcoin IRS Tax Guide For Individual Filers)

Bitcoin does not offer consumer protection, as they are not insured by theFederal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). When any transaction is carried out with Bitcoins, it can only be reversed if the person who has received them refunds them. There is no involvement of a third party or a payment processor as in the case of a debit or credit card. Bitcoins are in a way similar to cash transactions involving two parities - giver and taker. Thus it is a good idea to use Bitcoinswith organizations or people who are known and trusted.

Comets face rematch in state semis

To say Crestwood is in familiar territory is an understatement.

The Comets live in the postseason. The pressure, the intensity, the late-game heroics are something just about every player on the squad can share a story or two about.

Crestwood makes its third straight appearance in the semifinals of the PIAA Class 2A Field Hockey Championships tonight at 7 p.m. at Emmaus H.S.

The Comets will take on Oley Valley the No. 2 seed from District 3. The winner advances to the state championship game and will face the winner of Villa Maria vs. Moravian for the title on Saturday at noon at Zephyr Sports Complex in Whitehall.

Unlike the Comets who rallied in the second half to fight off a tough Selinsgrove team for a 3-2 win, the Lynx (23-1-2) scored two goals in the first six minutes of their game and cruised to a 4-0 win over Forbes Road in the quarterfinals.

(They do) lots of good passing. Good recaptures and move the ball around well, Crestwood head coach Pat Moratori said. Theyre very much like a District 3 team, short, crisp passing. They move the ball laterally well.

This will be a rematch of last years semifinals game in which the Comets won 2-1 in double overtime. The Lynx are led by senior Carly Kauffman who is headed to Boston College next year. Shes scored 32 goals this season.

As a team, Oley Valley has scored 105 goals, including 17 shutouts.

After playing relatively close to home since the postseason began, the Comets will be making the hour-plus trek to Emmaus. Despite the distance, Crestwood knows the field. The team plays Emmaus at the start of each season. This year, it was the Comets turn to travel.

Its newer than ours, there are no football lines, thats a little different, Moratori aid. It doesnt bounce as much as ours. Its slower than ours, ours has been packed down.

The Psoriasis Association launches series of leaflets for people living with the condition

Comments(0)

There is an estimated, 1.8 million people in the UK who are living with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the skin and joints.

The condition causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales which normally appear on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back but can appear anywhere on your body.

It can start at any age, but most often develops in adults under 35 and can affect men and women equally.

To mark Psoriasis Awareness Week, the Psoriasis Association has launched a new range of leaflets to provide patients with comprehensive information about their psoriasis and the care options available on the NHS so patients do not have to suffer in silence.

The leaflets have been developed in response to a mounting call for high quality patient information - revealed in a number of independent reports published over the last 18 months.

A report published last month Patients in Control: why people with long-term conditions must be empowered found more than half of respondents were not offered support or information on their long-term condition at diagnosis.

The series of leaflets aims to address that information gap with information beyond the basics of what the condition is and are available through doctors and on the Psoriasis Association website.

Chairman Ray Jobling, who lives in Cambridge and has suffered with psoriasis for nearly 60 years, said they wanted to make people aware of the different treatments available.

People who have psoriasis, and in some cases sadly have it for quite a long while, they get stuck on the same form of treatment, he said. We like to try and keep people up to date, theres lots of new treatments coming in, and good ways for how people can support themselves.

Stellenbosch means business at World Travel Market

11 November 2014 - by - Stellenbosch Experience

Stellenbosch presented its multi-faceted Wine Tourism offerings at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2014, a leading global event for the travel industry held in London, as part of the towns efforts to encourage more foreign arrivals to the region and longer stays.

WTM offers a unique platform for a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to network and conduct business and Stellenbosch used this unrivalled business opportunity to showcase its dynamic Stellenbosch Experience wine tourism campaign initiated by the towns Stellenbosch 360 tourism outfit and the pioneering Stellenbosch Wine Routes to top UK and international media and trade professionals.

This four-day show also marked the beginning of a proactive, targeted international PR campaign for the City of Oaks, which focuses on Stellenbosch as South Africas premier wine tourism region, an ideal hub from where to enjoy the regions top food offerings, family-friendly nature, its latest luxury travel offerings and its upcoming attractions for 2015.

Not only did we engage with numerous top travel and business editors, food journalists and UK tour operators to share with them our slice of wine tourism uniqueness, we also gained first hand insight into the latest travel and tourism trends to ensure that Stellenbosch is and stays up there with the worlds best destinations. It also reminded us to make the most of our own unique identity and to stay relevant, innovative and fluid, shares Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, former CEO of Cape Town Tourism and owner of Destinate, an international tourism marketing agency and the driving force behind the Stellenbosch Experience campaign.

According to du Toit-Helmbold the feedback from the floor was extremely positive and the unique, high value experiences on offer by the campaign partners, which include the stellar likes of Spier, The House of JC Le Roux, Stellenbosch Vineyards, Dornier Wines, Kleine Zalze, Fleur du Cap, Tokara and Thrifty Car Rental, were met with great interest.

Stellenbosch is a desirable destination, not only as South Africas premier wine tourism region, but especially as an affordable, family-oriented destination and the value for money that it offers for UK travellers.

The media and trade also honed in on the wide variety of foodie experiences that we offer as well as the bio-dynamic wine farming initiatives and young chefs and winemakers stemming from Stellenbosch, adds du Toit-Helmbold.

Experiential tourism, which includes food and wine tourism, is now one of the biggest driving forces behind choosing travel destinations with destinations like Australia and New Zealand investing millions in promoting their wine tourism offerings.

Some of the global travel trends that have emerged include the fact that multi-generational travel, peer-to-peer travel, bookings via mobile devices; cycling tourism, and low cost luxury are on the rise and that value for money is the most important factor when deciding on a holiday destination. The three most important things that tourists are expecting when travelling are: great local food and culinary customs, intimately connected interaction with friendly locals through memorable and authentic experiences, and free wifi.

WYSE Travel Confederation meets South Africas minister of tourism as preparations get underway for WYSTC 2015

Preparations for the 24th annual World Youth and Student Travel Conference (WYSTC 2015), to be held in Cape Town, have stepped up a gear as representatives from organiser WYSE Travel Confederation met with South Africa's Minister for Tourism recently.

The WYSE Travel Confederation delegation, which included Director General David Chapman and Chairman of the Board Ashraf Wali, met with Mr Derek Hanekom, South Africa's Minister for Tourism, along with representatives from the South Africa Youth Travel Confederation (SAYTC) during a site visit to Cape Town ahead of next September's event.

"We are delighted to be bringing WYSTC to Africa for the first time and, fittingly, to be hosting next year's event in the African city that our research reveals youth travellers would most like to visit in the future," commented Mr Chapman.

"During the meeting we developed a collaborative partnership that will support the delivery of an exceptional WYSTC 2015 for delegates and partners while showcasing South Africa as a youth, student and educational travel destination. Our long-term goal is to ensure that the conference creates a lasting legacy for the country's youth and student travel industry."

Minister Hanekom added: "It is an immense honour for South Africa to have been selected to host WYSTC 2015. We look forward to hosting delegates from all over the world at this exciting event."

Tourism as a whole generated 9.5% of South Africa's gross domestic product in 2013 and accounts for more than 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs in the country. The youth sector provides a significant contribution to total tourism receipts and will play an important role in the future sustainability of South Africa's tourism export earnings.

WYSTC 2015 will be held at Cape Town's International Convention Centre from 22 - 25 September. Registration will open early next year.

For further information about WYSTC and to pre-register visit http://www.wystc.org.

British engineering firm selling computer for just 15, would you buy one?

Comments(2)

A British engineering firm has unveiled its latest computer - a super-slim 6.5cm long machine costing just 15.

The Raspberry Pi Model A+ is described as "small, energy-efficient and crazy-affordable" way to get into computing.

Smaller than a credit card, and not much thicker, the Model A+ has a 700Mhz processor and 256mb of RAM.

It weighs just 23g and has been designed for watching hi-def video, programming, playing games and web browsing.

The tiny computer has a HDMI socket to connect to a monitor or TV and a USB socket for plugging a keyboard lead or mouse into.

There is also an audio jack, room to plug in an SD card and a micro-USB socket.

The Model A+ is made by Raspberry Pi, a Cambridge-based charity, which is selling the computer online for just ($20) 15.

James Adams, director of hardware engineering, said: "We want to get them into the hands of children so they can learn about computers and programming.

"Parents might not want to let children play about on computers but this gives them access to technology at an affordable price.
