Baltimore, Md., November 14, 2014--Most research on spinal cord injuries has focused on effects due to spinal cord damage and scientists have neglected the effects on brain function. University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) researchers have found for the first time that spinal cord injuries (SCI) can cause widespread and sustained brain inflammation that leads to progressive loss of nerve cells, with associated cognitive problems and depression.

The research, published recently in two articles, one in of the Journal of Neuroscience, the other in Cell Cycle, highlights the close links between spinal cord injury and loss of brain function, and suggests potential treatment to prevent such changes.

"Animal studies have shown that traumatic brain injury, even mild repeated injuries, can result in progressive brain tissue damage and cognitive decline, as well as widespread brain inflammation. But little research has examined whether these problems occur after spinal cord injuries," said UM SOM anesthesiology professor and noted neurobiologist Alan Faden, MD, who led the study.

"Our studies the first to show that isolated SCI can cause progressive loss of brain cells in key brain regions," said Faden. "The brain degeneration was demonstrated in different experimental models and animals. We also have identified certain molecular mechanisms responsible for these pathological changes and shown that certain drugs can prevent these injuries, including inflammation, brain cell loss, cognitive decline and depressive-like behaviors after injury."

"This is an important and significant advancement in our understanding of the overall effects of spinal cord injuries," said UM SOM Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA. "The link between spinal trauma and brain function is now more clear, and we believe that further research in this area will offer the hope of new ways to treat this devastating trauma, and perhaps even reverse its effects on the brain."

Med School To Launch $750 Million Campaign

UPDATED: November 14, 2014, at 2:05 a.m.

Harvard Medical School is halfway toward its goal of raising $750 million in its piece of the ongoing University-wide capital campaign, the school announced Thursday afternoon. The announcement preceded a kickoff event Thursday evening at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel that drew more than 250 alumni, administrators, and HMS affiliates and featured speeches from top-level administrators and a performance by Yo-Yo Ma 76.

The schools goal represents about 12 percent of Harvards total campaign goal and is the third highest among the University's schools, following those of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Business School. HMS is one of the last schools to join the University-wide campaign, which launched in Sept. 2013, and the school has already raised $375 million through gifts and pledges from nearly 5,300 donors and alumni.

The campaigns four priorities include better educating students and increasing student financial aid; understanding and curing disease by supporting biomedical informatics, therapeutic science, and other fields; improving health systems through increased focus on global health, health care systems, and primary care; and providing flexible funding for health research and change.

At the launch event, Dean of the Medical School Jeffrey S. Flier cited obesity as an example of a complex health problem that, despite growing insights and knowledge on the topic, demands funding from donors for further research.

Were missing another part of the puzzle, he said. We need to continue our efforts to understand, and we need to be patient because we do not always succeed right away.

Similarly, University President Drew G. Faust underscored the role of donor support to the success of the Medical School.

The achievements of Harvard Medical School are not accidents of history. They are the product of centuries of cumulative efforts of support and generosity, she said.

Joshua S. Boger, founder and former CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals and a member of the HMS Board of Fellows, will serve as chair of the campaign, which is entitled The World is Waiting.

The campaigns honorary co-chair, Ellen R. Gordon, invoked this sense of urgency when explaining her decision to donate to the Medical School.

Former Salem High star is back with Buckeyes

Former Salem High star

is back with Buckeyes

Associated Press

COLUMBUS

Salem High School product Amy Scullion had already graduated and been accepted to medical school at Ohio State. She figured shed played her final basketball game for the Buckeyes last February.

Now shes back on the court. Sort of.

Scullion will balance her challenging medical-school schedule with the Buckeyes practice and game schedule this season. A starter a year ago, shes returning to a team that is short-handed because one player was kicked off the team and three others sustained season-ending knee injuries in the preseason.

I reached out to her when we had some of these injuries and she initially was very, very interested because she missed (playing), coach Kevin McGuff said on Thursday. But there were a lot of hoops we needed to jump through, No. 1 from an eligibility standpoint. And then secondly just from a practicality stance. Can she do what was required of her to be successful in medical school, which is the No. 1 priority?

Shell give it a shot.
