Study suggests genetic link for male homosexuality

By LINDSEY TANNER AP Medical Writer

CHICAGO (AP) - A large study of gay brothers adds to evidence that genes influence men's chances of being homosexual, but the results aren't strong enough to prove it.

Some scientists believe several genes might affect sexual orientation. Researchers who led the new study of nearly 800 gay brothers say their results bolster previous evidence pointing to genes on the X chromosome.

They also found evidence of influence from a gene or genes on a different chromosome. But the study doesn't identify which of hundreds of genes located in either place might be involved.

Smaller studies seeking genetic links to homosexuality have had mixed results.

The new evidence "is not proof but it's a pretty good indication" that genes on the two chromosomes have some influence over sexual orientation, said Dr. Alan Sanders, the lead author. He studies behavioral genetics at NorthShore University HealthSystem Research Institute in Evanston, Illinois.

Experts not involved in the study were more skeptical.

Neil Risch, a genetics expert at the University of California, San Francisco, said the data are statistically too weak to demonstrate any genetic link. Risch was involved in a smaller study that found no link between male homosexuality and chromosome X.

Dr. Robert Green, a medical geneticist at Harvard Medical School, called the new study "intriguing but not in any way conclusive."

The work was published Monday by the journal Psychological Medicine. The National Institutes of Health paid for the research.

Freedom Chair makes it easier for the handicapped get around outdoors

Shane McGlaun

Being confined to a wheel chair makes it much more difficult for people that are paralyzed or can't walk for other reasons to get around. A new wheelchair product has debuted called the Freedom Chair that looks a lot like a normal wheelchair, but has a novel way for users to propel themselves. A typical wheelchair requires the user to spin the wheels using their hands and rings attached to the wheels.

The Freedom Chair has the same style as a traditional wheel chair, but it has two levers that come up on each side of the chair user. By gripping, those levers and pushing them forwards and pulling them back, sort of like pedaling a bike, to get around.

The chair is designed to make it easy to get around both on road and off road. The designers of the Freedom Chair say that the lever drive gives 50% more torque than traditional push rims. The chair also uses standard bike parts for easy customization. A three-wheel design makes the Freedom Chair more stable.

The Freedom Chair is portable and designed to fit into the trunk of a small sedan. Freedom chair is on Kickstarter seeking $50,000 and has raised over $61,000 with 43 days to go. To get your own Freedom Chair will set you back $2195 with estimated delivery in May 2015. That is an $800 savings over the expected cost of Freedom Chair when it goes into retail outlets.

Italian PM visits Sydney factory

Italian PM Matteo Renzi joked that he couldn't possibly compare Australia's beaches with Italy's.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi joked that he couldn't possibly compare Australia's beaches with those of his home country as he toured a Sydney factory.

On the final day of his visit Down Under for the G20 summit, NSW Attorney-General and local MP Brad Hazzard told him he had to check out Sydney's beautiful coastline.

But the Italian leader said he was afraid of speaking too highly of his host's beaches in case it cost him popularity back home.

"I can't disclose with you about the quality of the beaches in Italy and in Australia because Italian people can vote," he said to laughs at the Prysmian plant in Dee Why on Sydney's northern beaches.

But he did describe Sydney as "one of the most beautiful places around the world".

Also giving a speech, Mr Hazzard described Italy and Australia as "great friends" and praised the "spirit" and "dedication" of the Italian immigrants who now call Australia home.

The pair were speaking as they visited the Prysmian plant, which employs more than 500 workers in Australia and has partnered the government for the NBN project.

Earlier on Monday, Mr Renzi went to see major construction work on a section of Sydney's North West Rail Link and Kellyville Station, which is being built by Italian-based consortium Salini Impregilo.

Wollongong Council closer to unleashing beach dogs

Wollongong City Council's vote has gone to the dogs, so to speak, with staff recommending man's best friend be allowed to keep frolicking unleashed on northern suburbs beaches.

The proposal - for there to be no change to off-leash beach zonings throughout the city - comes after nearly four months of heated protests and social media campaigning, mostly from the pro-dogs-on-beaches lobby group "Unleash Our Beaches".

Group spokeswoman Donna Bennett said she was "ecstatic" to read the council's recommendation, published on Monday, which would continue to allow dogs to roam free on Sharkeys, McCauleys, Little Austinmer and Stanwell Park beaches.

"People have put their lives on hold to fight this, so you would think common sense will prevail," she said.

Several changes to the council's dogs on beaches policy were proposed in July, with councillors saying they needed to reach a compromise between residents who walked their dogs and those who did not agree with dogs having access to beaches.

During the exhibition process the council received about 2000 submissions and two petitions with about 3000 signatures, the vast majority of which supported the existing beach zones.

Now, staff have published three options for councillors to consider next week - one of which includes removing the off-leash areas from the contentious northern beaches - but clearly state the "no change" option is the one to pick.
