Washington

Seated in the posh lobby of the Capitol Hill Hotel just blocks away from the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, Cresent Hardy was tired, but excited.

Nevada's newest member of Congress was in the middle of a whirlwind seven days of orientation, learning what it takes to be a federal lawmaker. He'd collected stacks of paper listing guidelines for ethics, rules for overseas trips and strict security procedures for his office computers. He needs to hire staff for his tiny, fourth-floor congressional office and is collecting resumes for his team back in Nevada.

But above all else, Hardy is focused on how he can use his blend of Tea Party conservatism and pragmatic libertarianism to lift government's burden on Nevadans.

"On conservative measures, you won't find anybody more conservative than I am," said Hardy, a former Assemblyman who won a surprise election Nov. 4 to represent central Nevada and North Las Vegas. "I'm about as far right as you can get on the issues."

"But I'm a realist," he added, explaining he'll work with whoever shares his views.

The Libertarians planning to take over New Hampshire

Mr Freeman, 34, hosts a radio show which is syndicated around the country. He is also ran for governor on behalf of the New Hampshire Liberty Party.

The Free State Project was founded more than a decade ago by Jason Sorens, who was studying for a doctorate at Yale at the time.

His dream was to trigger a mass migration of 20,000 libertarians to a state with a small population by early 2016.

The idea was to follow the example of the Mormon migration to Utah in the mid 19th century.

A number of states including Maine,Wyoming, Vermont and Alaska were considered as candidates for the movement before supporters decided on New Hampshire.

The granite state, which has no sales tax or income tax - though property taxes are high - was the overwhelming choice.

We want to create a society where the maximum role of Government is the protection of life, liberty and property, Mr Freeman told the Telegraph.

I like the idea of the natural law of supply and demand. I dont have a problem with laws which say you should not harm anybody else.

But other laws should go.

There are reams and reams of statutes which nobody can get through. I do have a real problem with restrictions on alcohol and drugs.

Xis Pacific Islands Tour Set to Deepen China Ties Further South

President Xi Jinping arrived in Fiji today as he seeks to broaden Chinas economic and strategic clout in the South Pacific, building on trade ties that flourished after then-army chief Frank Bainimarama staged a coup almost eight years ago.

The Fiji trip -- the first state visit by a Chinese leader -- bookends Xis 11th foreign sojourn since he became president in March 2013, doling out billions of dollars to countries from Tanzania to Costa Rica and Sri Lanka. China seized the advantage when Fijis ties with neighbor Australia cooled after the putsch in December 2006, and total trade has since quadrupled.

It also continues Xis message of soft power as he balances an expanding military and claims to territory in the western Pacific against a growing economic interdependence. As host this year of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, Xi sought to cast China as both a partner and player in the region.

For Xi, he has presided over a diversification of Chinas diplomatic links, a more proactive foreign policy and the creation of deeper links beyond the Asian region, said Kerry Brown, director of the University of Sydneys China Studies Centre. Whether there is any real depth in these relationships beyond self interest it is hard to say. But at least China is less lonely now than it was a few years ago.

Two men fish as Fiji gets ready for the elections in Suva, the capital of Fiji, on Sept. 15, 2014. China has provided about $330 million in aid to Fiji since 2006, Lowy Institute calculations show.

Xis visit follows that of the leader of another rising Asian power, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pledged $5 million to promote small business in Fiji and a $70 million line of credit for a power plant.

We have shared interests in peace and cooperation in our inter-linked ocean regions, Modi told reporters after meeting Bainimarama Nov. 19. We are also aware that the relationship has at times been adrift, and that our cooperation should be much stronger than it is.

Genetics: Man and Mouse are Close but Different too

Mouse models have been used largely in studying genetic mechanisms involved in responses to diseases. New research that compared the genome of mouse and man says there are differences in the detail.REUTERS

What holds t for true the mouse does not always hold true for humans, though mouse models have served well in understanding genetic mechanisms in dealing with diseases.

In a systematical evaluation and assessment, various research papers are suggesting that while gene regulation machinery and networks are similar in mouse and man, the details differ quite a bit.

By understanding the differences, scientists will be better placed in knowing when the mouse model can be used in studies.

There are a substantial number of mouse genes that are regulated in ways different from similar genes in humans. The differences are not random, say researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Ludwig Cancer Research.

Only half of human genomic DNA aligns to mouse genomic DNA. In comparison chimpanzees' match 96%.

Mice and humans share approximately 70% of the same protein-coding gene sequences which are important as they send out instructions to build organisms, but this comprises just 1.5% of these genomes.

The results from the mouse ENCODE project, which is part of the ENCODE, or ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements, showed some DNA sequence differences linked to diseases in humans have counterparts in the mouse genome.

The differences and similarities

They also showed that certain genes and elements are similar in both species, providing a basis to use the mouse to study relevant human disease.
