Occupational medicine faces recruitment crisis

Occupational medicine is facing an imminent recruitment and retirement crisis, a survey by the General Medical Council (GMC) has suggested.

The councils The State of Medical Education and Practice 2014 report has found that the number of doctors in occupational medicine, already one of the medical professions smallest specialties, is in sharp decline.

The specialty had 466 doctors in 2013, because numbers have declined by 4.7% since 2010. Only public health doctors (955) report a steeper decline, of 5.2%.

By comparison, emergency medicine was up 33% and ophthalmology and general medicine were also both up 17%.

Equally worrying is the fact that 64% of occupational medicine doctors are aged over 50, compared with 59% in public health and just 24% in emergency medicine.

The specialty is not doing well in terms of attracting doctors from black and ethnic minority communities either, with the majority (84.5%) of its current membership being white.

It was also the specialty most likely to be complained about, with 18% of occupational medicine facing complaints between 2010 and 2013.

Niall Dickson, GMC chief executive, highlighted the challenges facing occupational medicine as being a particular worry.

The face of medicine is changing and it is important that those responsible for workforce planning understand the implications. Of particular concern are the potential shortages in some specialist areas where there are diminishing numbers of doctors in postgraduate training and large numbers over the age of 50, he said.

Emily Ward, 17-year-old senior at Boulder's Fairview High School

Emily Ward was nominated to attend the recent Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, D.C. The Congress is an honors program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. Emily was nominated to represent Colorado based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

During the three-day Congress, Emily heard from Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners; got advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; and learned about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.

During the summer of 2013, Emily also participated in the Medicine & Healthcare Conference at Columbia University, a weeklong workshop for students interested in medicine. Additionally, she took a course titled Nontraditional Careers in Life Sciences at Brown University.

What was the Congress like?

The Congress exceeded all my previous expectations. The speakers were phenomenal, ranging from accomplished teenagers to the Surgeon General of the United States.

What was the most interesting experience?

Witnessing a live surgery was by far the most interesting and memorable experience I gained. As an introduction to the latest surgical procedure used by fertility specialists, we witnessed a live laparoscopic fibroid removal.

Published: Sunday, 11/23/2014 - Updated: 40 seconds ago

BY DONALD EMMONS BLADE SPORTS WRITER

LIMA, Ohio Liberty-Bentons run at a Division V state football championship came to a halt Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.

Defending Division V state champion Coldwater proved to be the season-ending roadblock for the Eagles.

The Cavaliers scored 28 unanswered points to win 28-7 during a regional final in which Liberty-Benton possessed the football twice as long and ran nearly twice as many plays.

Hats off to them, theyre a great program, Liberty-Benton coach Tim Nichols said. Maybe one of these days we can get these guys. It was theirs tonight, and we wish them luck. Itll sting for a while.

The Eagles (12-1) began with the games first possession and did what they set out to do offensively against the Cavaliers (12-1).

They controlled the clock and found plenty of productivity with their run game to take a 7-0 lead when Austin Combs scored from one yard out with 1 minute, 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

Liberty-Bentons opening drive consisted of 19 plays for 80 yards and chewed up more than 10 minutes of the opening quarter.
