Living with Psoriasis is more than skin deep

New online psoriasis resource launched following research findings

29 October 2014 - Living with psoriasis can affect many aspects of your daily life including your overall physiological and emotional health1. To coincide with World Psoriasis Day (29 October) and help people understand and manage their condition more effectively, a new educational website, mypsoriais.co.nz has been launched by AbbVie.

In New Zealand there has been a real need for information specifically for Kiwis, as a survey* by AbbVie revealed many New Zealanders (57% of survey participants) have never accessed any type of online psoriasis support.2 mypsoriasis.co.nz specifically addresses this need by providing a range of support materials including a useful My Journey tab to help patients map their psoriasis journey and learn some of what they can expect as part of living with psoriasis in New Zealand.

Psoriasis is a relatively common autoimmune disease that affects one in 50 New Zealand adults. It is caused by over-activity of the immune system in the skin. It most frequently develops in young adults and continues throughout their life. The most common form of psoriasis causes raised, inflamed, scaly, red skin lesions, known as plaques.1

Dermatologist Dr Steven Lamb says World Psoriasis Day is a really important event in helping raise awareness of an often overlooked condition.

World Psoriasis Day provides a good opportunity to educate the public about psoriasis and highlights what its like living with the condition. It also helps those living with psoriasis realise that there are effective treatments and that they don't have to put up with the symptoms and psychological effects that come with having psoriasis.

The online quantitative survey completed by 492 New Zealanders also found there was a lack of available information on the likely prognosis and implications of psoriasis at diagnosis, with nearly half of survey respondents (49%) indicating that they did not feel they were given sufficient information about the condition and what their diagnosis meant for them.2

Feedback such as this from patients and a lack of awareness in the community about psoriasis were the driving forces behind creating the educational website.

We have a greater understanding now of the psychological and social effects of psoriasis on the individual patients who live with the condition having significant impaired quality of life. Patients have social isolation issues, difficulty maintaining relationships, avoidance of social situations and higher rates of stress and anxiety.

Buses stay on the road

CEDAR RAPIDS Every days an adventure, Doug Decker said of business at Cedar Valley World Travel, which he co-owns with wife Angela Decker.

The Cedar Rapids-based motor coach charter and tour company has been running since January 2007 when it spun off from Tri State Travel, Angelas familys longtime business.

Cedar Valley World Travel provides charter transportation services locally or to destinations throughout the continental United States and Canada. The companys fleet of vehicles ranges from five-passenger Sports Utility Vehicles to a 14-passenger van to 54- and 56-passenger deluxe motor coaches.

Thats one thing we offer that our competitors dont multi-size vehicles to accommodate different size groups, Doug Decker said.

They use their fleet to try to attract a range of clients with different transportation needs, from church and school groups going on multiday, cross-country trips to corporate clients and athletic teams seeking local airport transfers.

While roughly 60 to 70 percent of its revenue comes from motor coach charters, Cedar Valley World Travel also sells individual and group tour packages, including both planned trips for the public and organized tours for private groups and organizations.

The majority of what we do is home-in-a-day, Angela Decker said.

Destinations may include shopping trips to Chicago or the Mall of America, baseball games at nearby major league stadiums or tourist attractions such as Galena or the Pella Tulip Festival.

Stem cell trial to begin for children suffering from cerebral palsy

Nov. 23, 2014, 3:05 p.m.

It is hoped that a trial due to start next year, and involving about 20 Australian children with cerebral palsy, will show the benefits of using stem cells from their own umbilical cord blood to treat the condition.

About 20 Australian children with cerebral palsy will be infused with their own umbilical cord blood in a trial due to start next year, as physicians warn families against travelling overseas for experimental stem cell treatments.

The long-awaited Australian trial will provide some of the world's first evidence about the safety and effectiveness of using stem cells from umbilical cord blood to repair brain injury that leads to cerebral palsy.

Researchers are waiting on ethics approval for the trial which will provide treatment to families who have chosen to store their child's cord blood at private banks.

In some cases, children with cerebral palsy will be able to receive a sibling's cord blood if this is available.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance head of research Iona Novak said the study, led by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, will recruit children from around Australia who have access to privately banked cord blood.

Children aged one to 10 will receive infusions at private blood banks in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and will be assessed before and after the treatment to check for improvements.

Researchers will be unable to access cord blood from a public bank, which collects blood to treat blood disorders such as leukaemia and cannot be used for untested new therapies.

Associate Professor Novak said the trial was an important first step towards establishing whether stem cells could help repair the brain injury that leads to cerebral palsy, a series of disabilities associated with movement and posture.

Police officer debuts play about spirituality

IN 2012, Philadelphia Police Lt. Jonathan Josey became a national symbol of police brutality after a cellphone video went viral of him hitting a woman in the aftermath of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

He was charged with simple assault and fired - only to be exonerated the following year. Josey, at the time a decorated, 19-year-veteran of the police force, also got his job back - complete with back pay.

Fast-forward to 2014 and Josey is not only a vindicated man but a wiser one. The incident, which made national headlines, helped him reorder his priorities about what's really important, a message he shares in his new play, "What If Heaven Was Black."

It is scheduled to debut Saturday at 3 p.m. and to be performed again at 7 p.m. at Microsoft's School of the Future at 4021 Parkside Ave. (Tickets are $25 at the door.)

"When what happened to me happened, I never got sad or upset because I knew that God needed to remove something from me," said Josey, who uses the pseudonym "Jonathan Damon" with this production.

"And like I tell people: When God has a plan for you and he gives you something, he needs you to work on what he gives you. Don't make it second to anything," he continued. "I think I was so consumed with my job because it had been my everything for almost 20 years at the time, it was stopping me from doing something that he gave me. So, when he removed that from me, it allowed me time to finish this play. And as soon as I was finished, everything that was taken from me, I got back."

Despite a flurry of negative media attention, Josey said he managed to remain calm for the most part. (Shortly after the incident, I saw Josey at the premiere of a local, independent movie he acted in. Josey was glad handing with well wishers and socializing as if nothing had happened.)

"Even though I was vilified in the press and I had all this stuff going on and the pending trial and all that stuff, there was a peace in everything," explained Josey, who attends Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church. "I knew that God needed to remove that to get me to do what he needed me to do. So, this was my peace."
