Matt Mountain Selected as New AURA President

Today the Board of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) announced the selection of Dr. Matt Mountain as President, beginning March 1, 2015. Dr. Mountain will succeed Dr. William Smith who served as President since 2000.In announcing the selection, the Chair of the AURA Board of Directors, Dr. Richard Green, said, AURA is heading into an exciting period, and Matt has enormous experience in large program and large facility management in ground and space based organizations. This will be a great asset for AURA as we complete construction on the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and the James Webb Space Telescope.Dr. Mountain is currently the Director of the six hundred person Space Telescope Science Institute, which runs the science operation of the Hubble Space Telescope for NASA and is preparing for the science operations of JWST. Before that, Dr. Mountain served as Gemini Director from 1999 to 2005, and during the construction phase he focused on delivering the Gemini Telescope within a tightly constrained budget.Dr. Smith commented, The future of AURA is in good hands with Matt. AI Startup Sentient Raises $103.5 Million in Funding

Sentient Technologies LLC, an artificial-intelligence startup, raised $103.5 million as it develops data-analysis technology that will help companies use software to manage complex tasks like financial trading.

The Series C funding round was led by Access Industries Holdings Inc., with participation from a subsidiary of Tata Communications Ltd. (TCOM), Horizons Ventures and private investors in the finance, consumer, food and beverage and real estate industries, Sentient said today in a statement.

The investment brings the seven-year-old companys total funding to more than $143 million. Valuation wasnt disclosed. Sentient has been pursuing partnerships to tailor its proprietary data-analysis and prediction technology for specific uses, Nigel Duffy, chief technology officer for artificial intelligence, said in an interview.

The San Francisco-based company has already made automated financial-trading technology -- which is currently in development with an undisclosed partner, Duffy said -- and worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to make tools for analyzing and predicting the likelihood of intensive care unit patients developing sepsis, for example. It plans to team up with Indias Tata Communications to develop customized technologies, such as security products for the companys large Internet network, Duffy said.

Sentient, which has 60 employees, is benefiting from renewed interest in artificial intelligence, technology that has been in development since the 1960s yet has been prone to booms and busts as investors become optimistic about its possibilities, then cynical when companies fail to achieve their goals.

AI has re-emerged in the past decade as consumer Web companies such as Google Inc. (GOOGL) and Microsoft Corp. collected so much data that they needed to develop new systems to analyze it. The companies turned to various artificial-intelligence research endeavors conducted by academics and applied their findings to modern problems. That approach worked, and has led companies and investors to flock back to the industry.

Google, robot maker ABB Ltd. and Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg are among those investing in or purchasing artificial-intelligence startups or technology in recent years.

Sentients software works by running multiple evolutionary algorithms over a pile of data at once, then using its own technology to grab all the answers and come up with an optimal solution, Duffy said. Its like taking the best bits of evolution and combining them, so instead of getting a few animals specialized at specific tasks you end up with one animal that is great all around, he said. This means that its technology is more flexible than typical artificial-intelligence approaches that utilize machine learning, he said.

Evolutionary algorithms can work with much less formal descriptions of the problem, he said.

AIAC Names Recipients Of James C. Floyd Award

Mr. Dave Caddey (pictured, right) and Mr. Ron Holdway (left) have been awarded the James C. Floyd Award by the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) for their exceptional contribution in the development of Canada's space industry. Mr. Caddey and Mr. Holdway were honoured by the aerospace community at a ceremony during the Annual Aerospace Dinner on November 18th in Ottawa. This marks the first time the James C. Floyd Award has been awarded to two individuals at once.

"I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Caddey and Mr. Holdway. These two deserving space pioneers exemplify Canadian leadership and innovation," said AIAC President Jim Quick. "Mr. Caddey and Mr. Holdway have been at the forefront of the Canadian space industry for many years, providing exceptional leadership both in their companies and through their involvement with AIAC. Chennai, Nov 25:Chennai, Nov. 25: Mission Aerospace Foundation of India (Mission Aerofi), an organisation that promises to develop products from home-grown platforms for the world market is all set to take off in Bengaluru on November 29. The official launch of Aerofi will be held at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) situated inside the Indian Institute of Science campus.

Former Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Fali H Major (Retd) will be the chief guest during the occasion.

In search of the best in aerospace

In an exclusive interview to OneIndia, Anurakar Mishra, CEO of Genser Aerospace and Information Technologies Private Ltd and the brain behind the new organisation, said that Mission Aerofi has been conceived to be a complementing force to the existing Indian aerospace structure, to make rightful contributions, as the future of global aerospace takes shape.

"Airpower of any country can be mapped to an active and energetic aerospace industry with vibrant eco-system. Mission Aerofi will have a role for everyone, who has a passion for the development of aerospace products from an Indian platform. We are gathering luminaries from the Indian aerospace industry, scientists, academia, students and friends of India for the event," Mishra said.

Ambitious plans in the pipeline

The 12-member governing body of Mission Aerofi has identified projects starting from Rs 10 crore to Rs 1,000 crore. "We are looking for some kind of commitment from the companies to contribute a small portion of their profit towards our mission. We shall attempt this to be linked to their CSR initiatives. We are focusing only on aerospace companies who are committed towards our cause to contribute," Mishra said. Aerofi cells are likely to be formed in different companies with focus on research. "We shall rope in some of the best academic institutions in the country. We will manage the projects and act as a force multiplier. Aerofi will not be limited to India alone, but will engage with global aerospace community as required," he added.

According to Wg Cdr C D Upadhyay (Retd), former Chief Test Pilot of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and currently one of the pillars of Aerofi, key work areas have been already indentified. "We are looking at the development of business jet, defence trainer aircraft, propulsion system, UAV, gyrocopter, mini and microsatellites, aerospace systems, aerospace design tools and aerospace process," Upadhyay said.

Newswise Three Virginia Tech professors have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, according to an announcement from the world's largest scientific society.

Virginia Techs total of three new Fellows leads all Virginia universities. They are among 401 scholars elected to the association in 2014.

Honored were Madhav V. Marathe, director of the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute; Joseph C. Pitt, a professor of philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences; and Stephanie Shipp, deputy director of the Social and Decision Analytics Laboratory of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at the Virginia Tech Research Center Arlington.

The new Fellows will be given an official certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin the colors representing the disciplines of science and engineering on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, during the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in San Jose, California.

Their names will be formally announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on Nov. 28.

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the associations 24 sections, or by three current Fellows so long as two of them are not affiliated with the nominees institution.

Marathe, a professor of computer science in the College of Engineering, was named a Fellow for contributions to high performance computing algorithms and software environments.

Question: "What is agnosticism?"

Answer: Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God is impossible to be known or proven. The word agnostic essentially means without knowledge. Agnosticism is a more intellectually honest form of atheism. Atheism claims that God does not existan unprovable position. Agnosticism argues that Gods existence cannot be proven or unproven, that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists. In this, agnosticism is correct. Gods existence cannot be empirically proven or disproven.

The Bible tells us that we must accept by faith that God exists. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. God is spirit (John 4:24) so He cannot be seen or touched. Unless God chooses to reveal Himself, He is invisible to our senses (Romans 1:20). The Bible declares that the existence of God can be clearly seen in the universe (Psalm 19:1-4), sensed in nature (Romans 1:18-22), and confirmed in our own hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Agnostics are unwilling to make a decision either for or against Gods existence. It is the ultimate straddling the fence position. Theists believe that God exists. Atheists believe that God does not exist. Agnostics believe that we should not believe or disbelieve in Gods existence, because it is impossible to know either way.

For the sake of argument, lets throw out the clear and undeniable evidences of Gods existence. If we put the positions of theism and agnosticism on equal footing, which makes the most sense to believe in regards to the possibility of life after death? If there is no God, theists and agnostics alike all simply cease to exist when they die. If there is a God, both theists and agnostics will have someone to answer to when they die. From this perspective, it definitely makes more sense to be a theist than an agnostic. If neither position can be proven or disproven, it seems wise to make every effort to thoroughly examine the position that may have an infinitely and eternally more desirable end result.

It is normal to have doubts. There are many things in this world that we do not understand. Often, people doubt Gods existence because they do not understand or agree with the things He does and allows. However, as finite human beings we should not expect to be able to comprehend an infinite God. Romans 11:33-34 exclaims, Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?

We must believe in God by faith and trust His ways by faith. God is ready and willing to reveal Himself in amazing ways to those who will believe in Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

J.R. Simplot won federal approval for a genetically modified potato on Nov. 7, and although it is a major supplier of french fries to McDonald's , don't worry about some GMO spud showing up in your Happy Meal. The fast-food chain says it has no plans on adopting it anytime soon.

But that might not be the case for long.

Simplot says that because its new potato is made from genes derived from potatoes themselves and not bacteria or genes from other species, thus creating some sort of Frankenfood, it doesn't rise to the same level of concern activists would have over some crops, or when they thwarted Monsanto's effort to propagate a GMO potato in the 1990's.

Back then, Monsanto got the FDA to approve its New Leaf potatoes that were resistant to disease and insects through the development of a synthetic version of the bacillus thuringiensis bacterium, or Bt.

After initial acclaim, the biotech charged high premiums for its seed, which limited adoption, and then ultimately went nowhere when McDonald's and the Frito-Lay division of PepsiCo were cowed by anti-GMO activists into rejecting them. J.R. Simplot, an early adopter of the GMO potato, instructed its farmers not to plant them. Monsanto eventually stopped developing the potato in 2001.

Simplot's new Innate potatoes was developed to be especially beneficial to fast-food restaurants that sell lots of french fries. It's a little science-y, but it's important to understanding what Simplot is doing.

When potatoes and other starchy foods like bread (and even coffee!) are processed at high temperatures, such as when they're deep-fried, a carcinogenic chemical compound called acrylamide if formed.
