Bitcoin system put in context

The first conference in New Zealand about digital currency bitcoin will be held in Queenstown this weekend.

Billed as ''New Zealand's first digital currency summit'', Bitcoin South will feature 22 speakers offering technological, financial, investment, media and government regulatory perspectives on bitcoin.

Among the speakers is former Mega Ltd CEO and former Internet Party chief executive Vikram Kumar.

Organiser Fran Strajnar declined to tell the Otago Daily Times how many had signed up for the conference, but was ''more than happy with the turn-out and the quality of people who are showing up''.

''We've invited decision-makers from all industries to come and get an early understanding. Normally, you have to travel to Hong Kong or New York to get this quality of speakers.''

Bitcoin is a software-based online payment system that is also known as a digital currency, or cryptocurrency.

Mr Strajnar said speakers and attendees had already begun arriving in Queenstown for the two-day conference, which is being held at the Millennium Hotel.

Bitcoin might fail but the blockchain is here to stay

Bitcoin could end up being the MySpace of cryptocurrency, but the underlying technology powering new payment methods is here to stay. That's according to Brock Pierce, a tech entrepreneur with his eyes firmly fixed on cryptocurrencies.

"By having a baseline protocol that allows you to innovate around finance, a lot of interesting things can happen," he says. The protocol Pierce is talking about is the blockchain -- a public, transparent ledger that gives a chain of transactions that is secure and reliable.

"This protocol is going to democratise the global financial system," Pierce explains to the audience at WIRED Retail. In South America and Africa the blockchain, be it through Bitcoinor another cryptocurrency, has huge transformative potential.

Pierce also believes that the technology could have an impact on other processes. Voting systems that used the blockchain could ensure that elections were free of corruption and easier to run.

He compares the use of Bitcoin in the developing world to Africa's "jump" to mobile communications. With little in the way of fixed line networks many countries went straight to mobile phones -- similar things could happen with Bitcoin. Pierce ought to know, he's the cofounder of Crypto Currency Partners (CCP) which has invested in 25 crypto projects so far this year.

One market already using the blockchain to bypass traditional banks is international money transfer. People who move abroad to find work and want to send money home are hampered by expensive international transfer speeds, but cryptocurrency removes this barrier.

"This innovation is more substantial than the internet. The blockchain is going to have an even larger impact. As to what currency does it -- that's difficult to say."

"I think that people are starting to recognise the value of the blockchain, whether that be large banks becoming incredibly friendly to the blockchain and the innovation it represents. The opportunities it creates are substantial enough that I don't see this trend coming to an end."

Novartis' Psoriasis Drug Cosentyx Backed for EU Approval – Analyst Blog

Novartis AG ( NVS ) announced that the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has provided a positive opinion on the approval of Cosentyx (secukinumab, formerly known as AIN457). Cosentyx is the first IL-17A inhibitor to be recommended as a first-line treatment option for psoriasis patients who require systemic therapy in Europe.

Cosentyx works by inhibiting IL-17A, a protein that is found in high concentrations in skin affected by the disease.

The CHMP's favorable opinion comes shortly after Cosentyx received a unanimous recommendation from the FDA's Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee (DODAC) last month -- a final decision from the FDA should be out in early 2015. The favorable opinion of the CHMP will now be reviewed by the European Commission with a final decision expected in the next couple of months.

With the CHMP in favor of approving Cosentyx, we believe chances of approval are high. Once approved, Cosentyx will be entering an extremely crowded psoriasis market given the presence of products like Stelara, Enbrel and Otezla.

Moreover, new treatments are currently in development including Amgen ( AMGN )/AstraZeneca's ( AZN ) brodalumab.

However, with Cosentyx consistently demonstrating very high skin clearance, including superiority to Enbrel in the head-to-head FIXTURE study, and given the high rate of dissatisfaction among patients regarding existing treatment options, Cosentyx could rapidly gain share once approved.

Meanwhile, Novartis is evaluating Cosentyx for several other indications including ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis among others.

Novartis currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the health care sector is Allergan Inc. ( AGN ) carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Travel To Go Presents Holiday Tips for Families Heading to Walt Disney World

San Diego, California (PRWEB) November 24, 2014

Travel To Go is aware that many families are planning on heading to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida this holiday season to spend some quality time with their family members. As one of the most popular family vacation destinations in the world, Walt Disney World can certainly fill up, especially around the holiday season when it is brought to life with fantastic dcor and events. With this in mind, Travel To Go is distributing a handful of tips to help families have the best possible vacation experience this holiday season at Disney.

Travel to Go knows that one of the main holiday events at the theme parks is Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. However, this "after-hours" event costs extra beyond the day's base ticket price, and some families may not wish to spend twice as much for access to the same park they spent the day at. The Christmas Party features some exclusive holiday events, but the park is open just like it would be during the day. Kids are usually tired by the time the Very Merry Christmas Party begins, so some families may want to think it over and consider skipping this event despite its popularity.

Travel To Go also points out that there is plenty to enjoy in the park other than the Christmas Party event. One of the most extraordinary parts of the park during the holidays is the lavish Christmas decorations which can be seen day or night. With nearly ten million Christmas lights, thirteen-hundred individually decorated Christmas trees, and fifteen miles of garland, there are plenty of decorations to enjoy no matter when guests choose to visit this season.

At Epcot, Travel To Go recommends that families planning to see the Christmas Candlelight Processional may want to look into the particular dining packages available to them. These packages typically include dinner reservations and preferred seating at the event. Calling ahead and making reservations will save families time since they will not need to wait in line for a dinner table, nor will they need to wait long in line once seating begins for the Candlelight Processional.

With all these options and top tips from Travel To Go, visitors in the Orlando Disney Parks will have many opportunities for the perfect vacation this winter. Visit http://www.traveltogo.com/ for more information on holiday travel options with Travel To Go.

Danica Patrick set for another GoDaddy Super Bowl commercial

Updated NOV 24, 2014 12:24p ET

Danica Patrick will be back for her record 14thSuper Bowl commercial for GoDaddy, but this one will be different than those she's done in the past.

No walking naked across the commercial set with Jillian Michaels while crewmen stand gape-jawed.

No steamy shower scene for teenage computer geeks to leer at.

No body painting a nude model.

No dressing up like Lisa from "Weird Science" or teasingly unzipping a black leather jacket.

This time around, Danica will be featured with a puppy.

Yes, a puppy.

And an inspirational message in the 30-second spot.

"We are taking an advertising tradition -- a tried-and-true Super Bowl commercial convention -- and turning it upside down," said GoDaddy chief marketing officer Barb Rechterman. "People love cute, little puppies in Super Bowl commercials, right? The power of our next Super Bowl ad is how it pivots from what you think is a traditional 'Hallmark' style commercial into something unexpected, while highlighting how our products help a small business owner drive their business online."

End to end 5G for super, superfast mobile

A collaboration between NEC Electronics Samsung and several academic centres in China and Iran, is investigating how software-defined cellular networking might be used to give smart phone users the next generation of super-superfast broadband, 5G. They provide details in the International Journal of Communication Networks and Distributed Systems.

Currently, the fourth generation of mobile phone connection technology, 4G, in as far as it has been adopted provides broadband-type connectivity for enabled devices such as smart phones, tablet computers, laptops and other gadgets through two standards: the Mobile WiMAX standard (first used in South Korea in 2007), and the first-release Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard (in Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden since 2009). Peak speeds were set in the standards at 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) for mobile users and ten times that for static, domestic 5G users, 1 gigabit per second. 100 Mbits/s is three times faster than the earlier 3G system but users commonly do not see data transfer at such high rates, downloads are usually at best 10 Mbits/s.

As yet there is no single standard for 5G although various systems are being touted based on rebuilding the cellular networks to be super-efficient and exploiting different frequencies with their capacity for greater data rates. The hope is to be able to achieve download speeds of perhaps 10 Gbits/s.

Ming Lei of Samsung Research and Development Institute China, Lei Jiang of NEC Laboratories, both in Beijing are working with colleagues at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, Beijing Jiaotong University and the University of Kurdistan. They have assessed the latest developments aimed at 5G systems and have proposed their own novel end-to-end (E2E) software-defined cellular network (SDCN) architecture which they say offers flexibility, scalability, agility and efficiency. Moreover, it will be sustainable for providers as well as profitable.

They are currently building a demonstration system that will allow them to utilise several promising technologies in their architecture for 5G including cloud computing, network virtualisation, network functions virtualisation and dynamic service chaining. The approach, they suggest could overcome bandwidth shortage problems, improve quality of service so avoiding delays and data loss, as well as reducing the vast number of error-prone network nodes needed for such a system.
