The man behind a startup acquired by Google for $628 million plans to build a revolutionary new artificial intelligence.
Demis Hassabis started playing chess at age four and soon blossomed into a child prodigy. At age eight, success on the chessboard led him to ponder two questions that have obsessed him ever since: first, how does the brain learn to master complex tasks; and second, could computers ever do the same?
Now 38, Hassabis puzzles over those questions for Google, having sold his little-known London-based startup, DeepMind, to the search company earlier this year for a reported 400 million pounds ($650 million at the time).
Google snapped up DeepMind shortly after it demonstrated software capable of teaching itself to play classic video games to a super-human level (see Is Google Cornering the Market on Deep Learning?). At the TED conference in Vancouver this year, Google CEO Larry Page gushed about Hassabis and called his companys technology one of the most exciting things Ive seen in a long time.
Researchers are already looking for ways that DeepMind technology could improve some of Googles existing products, such as search. But if the technology progresses as Hassabis hopes, it could change the role that computers play in many fields.
DeepMind seeks to build artificial intelligence software that can learn when faced with almost any problem. This could help address some of the worlds most intractable problems, says Hassabis. AI has huge potential to be amazing for humanity, he says. It will really accelerate progress in solving disease and all these things were making relatively slow progress on at the moment.
Renaissance Man
Hassabiss quest to understand and create intelligence has led him through three careers: game developer, neuroscientist, and now, artificial-intelligence entrepreneur. After completing high school two years early, he got a job with the famed British games designer Peter Molyneux. At 17, Hassabis led development of the classic simulation game Theme Park, released in 1994. He went on to complete a degree in computer science at the University of Cambridge and founded his own successful games company in 1998.
But the demands of building successful computer games limited how much Hassabis could work on his true calling. I thought it was time to do something that focused on intelligence as a primary thing, he says.
So in 2005, Hassabis began a PhD in neuroscience at University College London, with the idea that studying real brains might turn up clues that could help with artificial intelligence. He chose to study the hippocampus, a part of the brain that underpins memory and spatial navigation, and which is still relatively poorly understood. I picked areas and functions of the brain that we didnt have very good algorithms for, he says.

LONDON, United Kingdom - British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has warned that development of artificial intelligence could mean the end of humanity.
In an interview with the BBC, the scientist said such technology could rapidly evolve and overtake mankind, a scenario like that envisaged in the "Terminator" movies.
"The primitive forms of artificial intelligence we already have, have proved very useful. But I think the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," the professor said in an interview aired Tuesday, December 2.
"Once humans develop artificial intelligence it would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate.
"Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete and would be superseded," said Hawking, who is regarded as one of the world's most brilliant living scientists.
Hawking, who is wheelchair-bound as a result of motor neurone disease and speaks with the aid of a voice synthesizer, is however keen to take advantage of modern communications technology and said he was one of the first people to be connected in the early days of the Internet.
He said the Internet had brought dangers as well as benefits, citing a warning from the new head of Britain's electronic spying agency GCHQ that it had become a command centre for criminals and terrorists.
"More must be done by the Internet companies to counter the threat, but the difficulty is to do this without sacrificing freedom and privacy," Hawking, 72, said.

He added that the technology would eventually become self-aware and ''supersede'' humanity as it developed faster than biological evolution. His warning echoes a similar one made by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, who called the rise of AI ''our biggest existential threat''.
Honda has already developed a robot, called ASIMO, that is designed to help the less-able with tasks around the home, and Google is also said to be experimenting with robotics.
Prof Hawking was speaking at a press conference, detailing the latest stage of a partnership with Intel that has now lasted more than 25 years, and the tech giant has created a new interface for Prof Hawking's monitor.
This, combined with his speech synthesiser, has doubled the scientist's speech rate and improved his productivity 10 times over, said the technology giant.
Prof Hawking said: ''We are here to talk about how science and technology is improving the lives of people with disabilities.
''We are pushing the boundaries of what is possible through technology - without it I would not be able to speak to you today. Intel's research and development is bringing about changes in the world and in the way that disabled people can communicate."

BRUSSELS, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his deputy, Abdullah Abdullah, met Monday with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
The visit follows the Afghan Parliament's ratification of a Status of Forces Agreement with NATO on Nov. 27 which authorizes non-combat NATO training, advice and assistance to the Afghan National Security Forces beginning Jan. 1, 2015.
"Their presence here at NATO headquarters is a great expression of the strong partnership between NATO and Afghanistan," Stoltenberg said, who vowed to "develop our enduring partnership."
"We now have in place what we need to move forward with our new mission, Resolute Support. To train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces from the first of January 2015."
Ghani and Abdullah will remain in Brussels for a meeting Tuesday with foreign ministers to discuss operation Resolute Support.
Afghanistan's Parliament also approved a Bilateral Security Agreement with the U.S. on Thursday.
The White House said in a statement that the BSA and NATO SOFA "is a great credit to the newly formed government of national unity" and that it welcomes "a renewed partnership that will help advance our shared interests and the enduring security of Afghanistan."
