FIGHT FOR FREEDOM Swiss hostage hacks extremist in flee to safety

Dec. 6: Swiss hostage Lorenzo Vinciguerra, is treated in a hospital following his daring escape from the hands of the Muslim Abu Sayyaf extremists, in Jolo in southern Philippines.(AP)

MANILA, Philippines A Swiss hostage made a dramatic escape Saturday from Abu Sayyaf extremists when he hacked a rebel commander and then got shot as he dashed to freedom amid a military bombardment, ending more than two years of jungle captivity in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Lorenzo Vinciguerra, 49, made his daring escape while government forces were firing artillery rounds near the jungle forest where he was being held in mountainous Patikul town in Sulu province. He grabbed a long knife, hacked an Abu Sayyaf commander and then ran away, but was shot and wounded by another militant, security officials said.

Philippine army scout rangers later found him and escorted him to safety.

"He was wounded, but he's well and recovering in a hospital," regional military commander Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero said by phone.

In Bern, the Swiss government expressed relief that Vinciguerra had regained his freedom, but regretted that his Dutch companion remained in captivity.

While lying later in a military combat hospital bed, his head wrapped in a bandage, Vinciguerra basked in his hard-won freedom and thanked the military. He said he was happy because he can finally spend Christmas with his family, but worried about his companion, Ewold Horn, who was still in Abu Sayyaf custody in Sulu's jungles.

"I talked to him and asked him to join me, but he refused," Vinciguerra said of Horn, adding that the Dutchman had teeth problems and other ailments.

Vinciguerra said he felt the extremists would treat Horn well and urged the militants to surrender and start a new life.

"My final message to everybody: Put the gun down and come out from the forest," he told a reporter. "It's a nice life out here."

Thailand joins ranks of 'not free' nations

"After the coup, the NCPO [National Council for Peace and Order] made dozens of arrests, stepped up digital surveillance, infringed on online privacy and create a climate of fear where Internet users conducted an on and offline "witch hunt" against fellow citizens," the Washington DC-based organisation stated.

Freedom House noted that charges of lese majeste and computer-related crimes brought by Internet users against fellow citizens increased along with political detention. "In the month after the coup, there were at least five cases of a lese majeste charge added when an individual was already in detention. Three notable ones involved digital content."

Even those who use the Internet anonymously have come under threat since the May 22 coup, the organisation noted.

"In late May, the MICT reportedly proposed to establish a single national gateway to the International Internet to expedite monitoring and censorship online content that is deemed illegal. Reports in June 2014 said MICT officials were consulting with vendors to implement plans, which would require every Thai citizen to authenticate their identity using their smart ID cards before logging onto the Internet."

Another control method cited by Freedom House was surveillance to capture personal data.

"In early July 2014, many Thai Internet users found that visiting blocked websites prompted a screen with a TCSD logo and a message explaining it had been censored. Attempting to close the message triggered a request for consent to share the user's personal data, apparently through a Facebook app titled Login. Clicking "Agree" automatically compromised users' Facebook account details." Calls are also made for Internet users to uncover suspicious activity online. Harassment outside the legal system is also taking place and the organisation cited the case of historian Somsak Jiamteerasakul, now in self-exile, who is known for posting critical remarks on the highest institution.

Despite the ongoing surveillance, blocking of websites and prosecutions of Internet users, Freedom House noted that the Internet is increasingly becoming a major venue for political debate along with notable resistance to state's restriction.

"Online activists have proved resilient and creative in countering

limits on content. Circumvention software to access blocked sites is readily available online, and content producers often republish information on

alternate sites."

Freedom Park home to reminders of attacks on Pearl Harbor, Pentagon

EDWARDS At dawn today, Eagle Countys Freedom Park became home to reminders from two attacks on the United States by a foreign power: A block of Pentagon limestone blown from the building when terrorists flew a plane into it, and a Pearl Harbor flag.

Pete Thompson, commander of the local VFW post, will lead other local veterans in raising a Pearl Harbor flag to half staff. It will fly until dusk, when it will be lowered and stored.

I wanted a flag to be flown locally to be flown in Freedom Park next to the Pentagon limestone, said Terri Martinez-Johnson, who arranged for the flag to live here in the valley.

Pearl Harbor flags

Pearl Harbor flags work like Capitol flags. Theyre raised, fly a while and are lowered to be replaced by another flag. Pearl Harbor flags are signed by an attack survivor.

Ours was flown over the U.S.S. Arizona monument and signed by Navy 2nd Class Signalman Delton Walling. He joined the Navy just before the war, and made chief in three years. He was the communications guy for Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and Admiral Chester Nimitz.

But before we can tell you that story, we have to tell you this story.

Sister Act

Martinez-Johnson works with Singletree and her brother, Danny Martinez, is Pearl Harbors chief historian and works at the U.S.S. Arizona monument.

Not long ago she asked her brother if he could come to the Vail Valley for Veterans Day or Memorial Day, but Pearl Harbors chief historians time is generally spoken for on those kinds of days. If hes not doing that hes hosting the Discovery Channels Unsolved History, or something else historical.

Girls basketball: Freedom 61, Wiregrass Ranch 56

Fri. December 5, 2014 |

WESLEY CHAPEL Freedom was in urgent need of a timeout after seeing a 16-point lead shrink to two.

Coach Laurie Pacholkes message was well received. And it helped to have Taylor Emery among those receiving it.

Be calm. Stay composed, said Emery, who did just that with layups on her teams next two possessions. Emery scored 33 points, 12 in the final quarter, and Freedom (7-0) grabbed a hard-earned 61-56 victory at Wiregrass Ranch on Friday.

Both teams entered unbeaten and Freedom had revenge on its mind. In a rugged 6A-8 district, Freedom didnt even make the playoffs last year. Wiregrass knocked off the Patriots in the district semifinals.

Emery, coming in at a clip of 41.5 points per game, actually saw her scoring average drop Friday. Amanda Melosky led Wiregrass (9-1) with 24 points. She heated up in the third quarter, after the Bulls had missed their first seven shots to fall behind 43-27. Freedom missed its last eight of the frame though, and it was 44-36 entering the fourth.

The Patriots went back up by 10 before Emery picked up her fourth foul, and quick back-to-back scores from T.K. Kidd and Melosky pulled Wiregrass to 48-46 with 5:09 left.

Out of the timeout, Freedom ran plays for Emery, with Alex Sadler and Bianca Igwe providing perfect assists. The margin never got below four. Igwe finished with seven assists and 11 rebounds to lead Freedom. Sadler had five assists.

The game was 15-all through one quarter, then Freedom turned up the defense, causing eight turnovers while committing just one in the second quarter for a 35-23 halftime lead.

We lost it in the second quarter, Bulls coach John Gant said. The last 11 minutes of the game we played Wiregrass Ranch basketball. Good defense, and we stopped handing it to them. Most teams would have folded up and died against a team as good as Freedom.
