Brace for more assaults on freedom, says MP

Ariff Sabri calls on Malaysians to make Muhyiddin's fear a reality.

KUALA LUMPUR: Raub MP Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz has raised the fear of a further erosion of democratic freedoms in Malaysia, saying Umno is in a state of panic and will resort to draconian laws to keep itself in power.

Its easy to detect the dictatorial tendencies during the 2014 Umno general assembly, Ariff says in his latest blog entry. The belligerent and bellicose talk that emanated from the assembly will be used as an expression of the will of the people, thereby giving Umno the reason to apply draconian laws on citizens.

Referring to Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassins statement that Barisan Nasional will lose Putrajaya if there is a 2% vote swing to the opposition, he says Umno is aware that new voters in the next general election will reject it.

Ariff calls on voters to make Muhyidins fear a reality.

He is confident that voters from Generation Y wont vote Umno. This is not only because the young is by nature adventurous and sometimes rebellious, but also because they have acquired a higher level of social consciousness. This is caused in part by the explosion of information via the Internet and also the result of personal education.

The higher level of social consciousness has produced one profound realization and revelation; the younger generation is now more conscious that no one community or race in Malaysia can fight for its rights in isolation.

Instead, there is now a realization that any one communitys fight for rights must be part of a larger universal right belonging to the individual and the citizens of this country.

Ariff condemns Umno as a menace to individual freedom, which he defines as the freedom of coercion from others.

By individual freedom we dont mean the freedom to do anything as we please thats a disingenuous way to disarm our arguments offered by Umno couch potatoes and feeble minded drones.

Symposium on user, eco-friendly technology at NIT-K from Monday

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal will host a three-day international symposium on Development of use-friendly, eco-sensitive and energy efficient technology for future from Monday (December 15 to 17).

Organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the NIT-K the theme of the symposium was based on electronic system design, a release said.

This would be the fifth conference in the series, where the last conference was held in Singapore and next year it will be held in Malaysia.

The objective of the symposium was to provide a congenial and serious platform in which experts from academia and industry could interact with young researchers entering the fields of electronics, computer science, communication and allied engineering areas. Developments in this domain would have a large role to play in developing technologies for the future that have to be user-friendly in addition to being eco-sensitive and energy efficient. The symposium will focus on original research contributions from academia and industry.

Experts from Japan, Germany, USA and India would deliver seven keynote addresses and 50 research papers will be presented in the theme area of electronics system design. The proceedings of the symposium would be published by IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services and will be available on-line at IEEE Xplore, the release said.

Experts from across the world in emerging areas of energy efficient system design, high performance computing, signal processing and applications, wireless and wired communication systems and networks would attend it, the release added.

Rise of the Eco-Warriors: Film Review

The Bottom Line

Photogenic youth sell a solid message.

Byron Bay International Film Festival

Cathy Henkel

Dr. Willie Smits, Paul Daley, Ben Dessen

A well-intentioned mashup of reality TV contest and enviro-doc studded with Mission: Impossible-style graphics, Rise of the Eco-Warriors follows a united nations of young activists who spend 100 days in Borneo in an effort to fight deforestation and save endangered orangutans.

Cloaking her wake-up message in contemporary stylings targeting a young demographic -- the documentary initially plays like a kind of Survivor: Borneo-- Australian filmmaker Cathy Henkel issues a battle cry for action against the big, bad palm oil companies busily bulldozing the rainforests of the southeast Asian island.

Despite the jazzy externals, the result is more educational than engrossing, although it's a hard heart that's not stirred by the charming presence of the featured orangutans. One-off screenings around Australia throughout March should be followed by niche festival berths, and the film is a natural for use as a classroom tool.
