Drip irrigation system conserving water

An area farmer recently received recognition for his use of an irrigation system that is conserving water.

Most irrigated farms use a center pivot or flood irrigation on their crop, but for the first time, a farmer in Stratford tried drip irrigation on his crops this year and saw a big difference.

The system is placed underground and allows water to go directly to the roots of the crop.

Greg Wright says this method eliminates water evaporation and run off.

"The biggest thing was the reduction in water. We grew this field behind me here, we grew 247 bushels on this field with 2.7 gallons of water to the acre. So you know, bigger yields, then I have seen on this field and a lot less water use".

McLain Pool with Eco-Drip says irrigation is typically more expensive than the center pivot and flood irrigation system, but can save more money and water over time.

"The average drip system costs in this region is going to be 17 to 18-hundred dollars per acre. That is a big investment, but if you look at the increase in yields and reduction in water costs over 5 to 7 years, it typically pays for itself" says Pool.

Water is not the onlyresource being conserved with this system.

"I think you save natural gas, engine costs, your spending is cut way down. The cost of the system is expensive, but over a time period, 5 to 7 years, you are going to see a return and then some" says Wright.

Marvel to Debut Deathlok Solo Comic Book Series This Fall

Courtesy of Joe Jusko/Marvel Entertainment

Fresh from his on-screen debut as part of Agents of SHIELD, Marvel has revealed that Deathlok will be returning to comic stores on a regular basis later this year in a new series launching from the upcoming Original Sin storyline.

The character will return as part of the June-launching Original Sins anthology series, it was revealed on Wednesday, before receiving his own series afterwards. The Original Sins story will be by Nathan Edmondson and Mike Perkins, but no creative team has been officially confirmed for the latter ongoing series.

STORY: Marvel Announces Mystery Comics as Part of Original Sin Event

Fans of the ABC series' incarnation of the character may be surprised by the new series; however, according to Marvel, it won't be former SHIELD agent Mike Peterson (J. August Richards) playing thecyborg killing machine in the comic books, but Michael Collins, a former computer coder who woke up one day to find his brain transferred into a cyborg body.

Collins is only one of multiple Deathloks in the Marvel Comics continuity, including two different versions from separate alternate futures, one of whom was last seen hanging out with the X-Men. Whether or not this means it's more likely that well eventually see a comic book Peterson -- or whether he'd be entirely unnecessary, given the number of analogs already available -- remains to be seen.

Original Sins #1, featuring the return of Deathlok, will be released in June.

The Hot Five: Nudist beaches

According to the Aussie Naturists website, there are 23 beaches in NSW where you can go skinny-dipping without fear of being arrested - including the most famous nudist beach in Australia, Lady Jane Beach, on the northern end of Camp Cove on the way to South Head.

However, several of them are described as "traditional free beach" rather than legally designated nudist beach.

Here's five of the best with legal status.

Both within a few minutes walk of each other at Middle Head. A regular bus, 244, leaves Wynward and stops at the intersection of Middle Head Road and Chowder Bay Road. Snorkling, apparently, is particularly splendid.

2. Werrong Beach, Royal National Park.

About 40 kilometres south of Sydney, near Stanwell Park, this is the only beach in the Royal National Park designated as a free beach by the NSW government. Involves a steep, 1-kilometre bush walk. Not suitable for the elderly.

3. Armands Bay Beach, South Coast.

Rated by experts as "one of the prettiest and most accessible nude beaches in the world", this is 10 kilometres south of Bermagui on the Bega/Tathra road. The next "Family Fun In The Sun Day" will be held on Sunday, March 15.

4.Birdie Beach, Central Coast.

Home alone in paradise

Empty beaches, no tourists, laid-back locals ... just don't tell anyone about Huahine, writes Craig Platt.

The trouble with paradise is everyone wants a piece of it. Whether it's for a holiday, a landmark event in one's life (a wedding, a honeymoon) or an escape from the rat race to find a more simple life, the reality is the more beautiful a place is, the more people want to be there.

It's happened to Bali, Phuket (in fact large swathes of Thailand's beaches) and even in more difficult-to-reach places such as Tahiti and Bora Bora in French Polynesia.

This latter collection of islands in the South Pacific has been labelled paradise since the 1700s.

It was the French that created the myth. As Paul Theroux writes in his epic travelogue The Happy Isles of Oceania, the arrival of Captain Louis Antoine de Bougainville and his crew in the islands was greeted by a naked young girl paddling out to meet them in a canoe and, without a hint of modesty, climbing on board a ship filled with 400 lonely French sailors.

"In that moment the myth of romantic Tahiti was born," Theroux writes.

So, I wonder as I wade out to snorkel crystal-clear waters just a few steps from my bungalow, the whole beach to myself, why aren't the tourists hordes to be found in French Polynesia's Huahine?

The small island is only a short 35-minute flight from Tahiti's largest town and French Polynesia's capital, Papeete, and features stunning scenery, beautiful lagoons, beaches and great diving and snorkelling.

Palm Beach County raises hotel tax; money will promote tourism

Taxes are going up on hotel stays in Palm Beach County in a move to raise more money to promote local tourism.

The County Commission Tuesday increased the tax on hotel stays and other short-term rentals to 6 cents per dollar spent. That should raise an additional $7 million a year that the county plans to spend on fixing more eroded beaches and increased advertising of tourist attractions.

"We should put more money in it," Commissioner Priscilla Taylor said. "If people see [advertisements] they will want to come here."

Palm Beach County, like Broward County, has been charging 5 cents for every dollar spent per night for the "bed tax" on stays at hotels, bed and breakfasts and other short-term rentals.

Tax increase supporters are betting that tourists looking for hotels won't be scared away if Palm Beach County's bed tax rises to 6 cents per dollar.

Palm Beach County's additional advertising is expected to target potential visitors in Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

"Everybody will benefit from [more] tourism," said Lois Croft, the Palm Beach County representative of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

The county's bed tax produces $34 million a year, which can only be spent on tourism-related efforts. That can include advertising local attractions, fixing eroded beaches and maintaining local attractions such as the county's convention center in West Palm Beach and Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

The county plans to use about $2.1 million of the nearly $7 million in additional hotel stay taxes to pay for fixing more eroded beaches.

About $2.4 million of the additional tax money goes toward Discover the Palm Beaches, formerly the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which promotes local tourism and will lead the advertising effort.

Astro-Challenge: Taming the Pup-Can You Glimpse Sirius B?

Can you see it? Sirius B amid telescope diffraction spikes. Credit: NASA/McDonald Observatory.

Astronomy is all about thinking big, both in time and space.

The Earth turns on its axis, the Moon passes through its phases, and the planets come into opposition and solar conjunction on a routine basis.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum, there are some events which traverse such colossal spans of time that the mere mortal life span of measly homo sapiens such as ourselves can never expect to cover them. Many comets have periods measured in centuries, or thousands of years. The axis of the Earth wobbles like a top, completing one turn every 26,000 years in whats known as the Precession of the Equinoxes. Our solar system completes one revolution about the galactic center every quarter billion years

Feeling puny yet? Sure, astronomy is also about humility. But among these stupendous cycles, there are some astronomical events that you just might be able to live through. One such instance is the orbits of double stars. And as 2015 approaches, we challenge you to see of the most famous white dwarf of them all, as it reaches a favorable viewing position over the next few years: Sirius B.

Sirius A and B in x-rays courtesy of Chandra. Credit: NASA/SAO/CXC.

Sirius itself is easy to find, as its the brightest star in Earths sky shining at magnitude -1.42. In fact, you can spot Sirius in the daytime skyif you know exactly where to look.

But it is one of the ultimate in cosmic ironies that the most conspicuous of stars in our sky also hosts such an elusive companion. The discovery of Sirius B awaited the invention of optics capable ofresolving it next to its dazzling host. Alvan Clark Jr. and Sr. first spied the enigmatic companion on January 31st, 1862 while testing their newly constructed 18.5 inch refractor, which was the largest at the time. The discovery was soon verified from the Harvard College Observatory, adding Sirius A and B to the growing list of multiple stars.

A 19th century refractor similar to the one used to discover Sirius B. Photo by the author.

And what a strange companion it turned out to be. Today, we know that Sirius B is a white dwarf, the cooling dense ember of a main sequence star at the end of its life. We call the matter in such a star degenerate, not as a commentary on its moral stature, but the state the electrons and the closely packed nuclei within under extreme pressure. Our Sun will share the same ultimate fate as Sirius B, about six billion years from now.

Howard Gold's No-Nonsense Investing: Are the machines really taking over?

For decades, futurists have worried about computers getting human intelligence. Dystopian films from Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey to the Terminator and Matrix movies showed smart machines wreaking havoc on humans.

Now serious thinkers have sounded the alarm about artificial intelligence, while robotics and automation already have caused profound social and economic dislocation.

Two weeks ago, famed physicist Stephen Hawking told the BBC, The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.

It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate, he warned. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldnt compete, and would be superseded.

And the brilliant entrepreneur Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal and CEO of Tesla Motors TSLA, +2.48% and SpaceX, called AI our biggest existential threat.

With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon, he said.

Meanwhile, two researchers from the University of Oxford have estimated that computerization will put nearly half the jobs in the United States in jeopardy, including some creative professions that were thought to be immune.

Occupations that require subtle judgment are also increasingly susceptible to computerization, wrote Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne. To many such tasks, the unbiased decision making of an algorithm represents a comparative advantage over human operators.

Even for investing commentary? Just kidding I hope.

So, are the machines really taking over? I interviewed two leading researchers in AI and came away a little reassured, but not much. AI is progressing, but some technical barriers may delay immediate quantum leaps in machine intelligence.

Stanford to host 100-year study on artificial intelligence

By Chris Cesare

Russ Altman, a professor of bioengineering and of computer science at Stanford, will serve as faculty director of the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence.

Stanford University has invited leading thinkers from several institutions to begin a 100-year effort to study and anticipate how the effects of artificial intelligence will ripple through every aspect of how people work, live and play.

This effort, called the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence, or AI100, is the brainchild of computer scientist and Stanford alumnus Eric Horvitz, who, among other credits, is a former president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

In that capacity, Horvitz convened a conference in 2009 at which top researchers considered advances in artificial intelligence and its influences on people and society, a discussion that illuminated the need for continuing study of AI's long-term implications.

Now, together with Russ Altman, a professor of bioengineering and of computer science at Stanford, Horvitz has formed a committee that will select a panel to begin a series of periodic studies on how AI will affect automation, national security, psychology, ethics, law, privacy, democracy and other issues.

"Artificial intelligence is one of the most profound undertakings in science, and one that will affect every aspect of human life," said Stanford President John Hennessy, who helped initiate the project. "Given Stanford's pioneering role in AI and our interdisciplinary mindset, we feel obliged and qualified to host a conversation about how artificial intelligence will affect our children and our children's children."

Five leading academicians with diverse interests will join Horvitz and Altman in launching this effort. They are:

Altman will serve as faculty director and both he and Horvitz will be ex officio members of the committee. Together, the seven researchers will form the first AI100 standing committee. It and subsequent committees will identify the most compelling topics in AI at any given time, and convene a panel of experts to study and report on these issues.

Horvitz envisions this process repeating itself every several years, as new topics are chosen and the horizon of AI technology is scouted.

What's Driving Honeywell's Aerospace Segment Going Forward?

HoneywellsAerospace segment accounts for 40% of Honeywells revenues and forms around 43% of our $106 price estimate for Honeywell. The segment manufactures aircraft engines and equipment, and offers services such as maintenance, repair and overhaul for commercial and defense sectors. In 2014, Honeywells Aerospace segment has been performing well on the commercial front, but its sales to the Defense and Space sector have been facing downward pressure due to low U.S. defense spending.

The Aerospace segment has undergone some restructuring of late, resulting in the consolidation of its turbochargers business, which was earlier a part of the Transportation Systems segment. Turbochargers have been gaining a lot of popularity in automobiles due to their high efficiency and low emissions, leading to mid-single digit growth in 2014. In this article we take a look at the factors impacting Honeywells Aerospace segment in the coming years.

See our complete analysis of Honeywell

Commercial Original Equipment and Aftermarket

Honeywells Aerospace segment generates around 46% of its revenues from sales to commercial original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and aftermarket components. In the past few years, the segment has benefited from higher consumer spending driven by a recovery in the global economy. With an increase in air travel, aircrafts have had to endure more wear and tear, raising the need for maintenance and repairs. For Honeywells Aerospace segment, this has translated into higher sales of aftermarket components and maintenance, repair and overhaul services. Sales of aftermarket equipment have also benefited from aircrafts being regularly upgraded with latest equipment so that they remain efficient. The trend is likely to continue to have a positive impact on Honeywells Aerospace aftermarket equipment and components in the coming years. Honeywell forecasts its Aerospace aftermarket sales to grow at an average rate of 5.7% through 2018.

Sales to OEMs are largely dependent on supply contracts and growth in aircraft demand. According to Boeing, around 36,770 aircrafts will be delivered over the next 20 years, amounting to $5.2 trillion. The demand for more fuel efficient aircrafts and expansion of fleets will drive this growth. Given that Honeywells clientele in the commercial aircraft sector is comprised of major players such as Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin and COMAC, who have a significant lineup of deliveries through 2018, Honeywells commercial OEM sales are well positioned for future growth. Some of Honeywell?s supply contracts for aircrafts that are scheduled to be delivered through 2018 are Bombardier Lear 70/75, Bombardier CL350, Airbus A350, Embraer 450/500, Embraer E2, Boeing 737 Max and COMAC C919.

Defense and Space

The Defense and Space sector forms 30% of Honeywells Aerospace revenues and its primary customer is the U.S. Department of Defense, which accounts for 75% of Aerospace defense and space sales. In 2013, Aerospaces defense and space revenue declined 4.7% as a result of a 6.6% decline in the U.S. defense outlay.U.S. defense spending declined 4.7% in FY 2014and will likely decline in FY 2015 as well, though with some moderation, which will likely continue to impact Aerospaces defense and space revenue. Despite the decline in U.S. defense spending, Honeywell expects its defense and space sales to grow in the low single digits, primarily due to growth in defense spending across the world, especially developing countries. For example, the new government in India increased defense spending by 12% to $38 billion.China also increased its defense budget by 12%, to $132 billion.According to Honeywells estimates, global defense spending (excluding the U.S.) is expected to increase 2.5% in 2015, which will drive positive momentum in its defense and space sales.
