Freedom of religion? Mosque debate in Georgia town reveals sharp divide

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Nasser Omer is an accountant, husband, and father of two grown kids. This Indian-American is also a devout Muslim and as such, he tries to get to his nearest mosque as often as possible to pray.

NASSER OMER: For Muslim men, it is mandatory to pray five times a day in congregation. That is the reason we need to go to the mosque.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:Omer lives in Kennesaw, Georgia, a rural community of about 30,000. Its just over 25 miles northwest of Atlanta. a quiet town one where confederate flags fly freely. There are at least 40 churches in Kennesaw but no mosque, so Omer one of perhaps a hundred Muslims in town has to drive to the neighboring town of Marietta where there are a couple mosques.

How far is the nearest mosque for you to go to now?

OMER NASSER: Its about ten miles from here. And it takes about 30 minutes from my home to the mosque, one way. After the prayers, again, 30 minutes to come back.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:A few months ago, Omer and a few other Muslim families decided theyd like to open their own small mosque in their own town. They found this strip mall it had multiple vacancies, the price was right and so they filed the paperwork to open a small storefront mosque right here. This Pentecostal Church had done something very similar a few months before. To help them with the process, they enlisted a local Muslim community leader Amjad Taufique hed helped set-up another mosque in Marietta.

So, why does Kennesaw need a mosque?

AMJAD TAUFIQUE: Well, I mean, Muslims try to make it five times a day to the mosque and in this day and age, its a little difficult to be there five times a day. But usually, if you are close enough five, ten minutes drive you can go there early in the morning prayers, in the evening prayers at least. And you build up the community.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:At first, the application process was routine. The zoning board okd the idea, but as word got out about the proposed mosque, some opponents showed up in force at the next planning commission meeting. Cris Eaton Welsh who thinks the mosque should be approved sits on the Kennesaw City Council.

CRIS EATON-WELSH: From my understanding, there were over 200 people that showed up to the meeting, and there

Freedom Pre-filters Keep Out Debris

December 19, 2014 - Products

Freedom Air Filters developed a new cabin air filter pre-filter for Freightliner FLD 120, Classic 1988 and new truck models. The pre-filter is designed to keep debris from truck air filters.

The new pre-filter is the third cabin air filter product released this year and Freedom says that new pre-filters are expected to launch in the first quarter of 2015.

Freedoms pre-filters can catch particles as small as .005 inches, which the company says extends the life of an air filter. They are made of 1/8 inch-thick ABS plastic and are designed to keep out particles of rubber, dirt, sand and grain chaff from the pleats of an air filter element.

They also feature a proprietary polyester mesh with uniform micron openings and are treated with a hydrophobic water repellant process for added protection. Also, pre-filters can be used multiple times because they are easily cleaned with soap and water.

Freedom Stores to Provide Consumer Redress for Illegal Debt Collection Against Servicemembers

Freedom Stores to Provide Consumer Redress for Illegal Debt Collection Against Servicemembers

The CFPBs investigation found that Freedom Stores, Inc., Freedom Acceptance, and Military Credit Services and the owners, John Melley and Leonard Melley, Jr., engaged in illegal debt collection practices in violation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. These illegal practices include:

Under the terms of the consent order filed Thursday, the defendants would be required to provide over $2.5 million in relief to consumers harmed by the companies illegal actions, and to pay $100,000 to the CFPBs Civil Penalty Fund. The defendants would also be barred from further violations of the law and subject to monitoring by the CFPB.

The Bureau and the states complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendants have actually violated the law. The proposed court order has been filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and will have the full force of law only when signed by the presiding judge.

Homegrown cartoonist Kate Beaton gets around

A Nova Scotia-born cartoonists work swept across the country Thursday when it popped up as the daily Google Doodle.

Its totally cool. Its something everyone sees, artist Kate Beaton said in a telephone interview Thursday evening.

The worlds most popular search engine contacted her earlier this fall about doing a drawing for their daily doodle for Canada, Beaton said.

The nicest thing is that Im the one they thought of.

She describes her work as a mixed bag featuring history jokes, literary jokes and pop culture.

Google had wanted to do something to celebrate a woman in Canadian history.

Initially, they thought of using the image of suffragette Nellie McClung, but she was eventually ruled out because of her controversial support of eugenics.

Its important to take the bad with the good when you are celebrating people, Beaton said.

However, they settled on well-known female rights advocate Henrietta Edwards.

In Beatons drawing, Edwards is dressed in period clothing leading a group of marching women and carrying a banner that proclaims womens rights as townspeople look on in surprise and consternation.

Unknown actor cast as Cyborg in 'Batman Vs Superman'

Little known actor Ray Fisher has been cast in the role of Cyborg in the forthcoming Batman Vs Superman.

Best known for his theatre work, Fisher only has one previous screen role on his resume; a small part in 2008 short film The Good, The Bad and The Confused. Since then he has largely focused on stage acting and won acclaim for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali in the stage production Fetch Clay, Make Man.

The Hollywood Reporter carries the story that Fisher is in negotiations to play promising footballer turned superhero Victor Stone.

As confirmed earlier this year, Hans Zimmer is set to compose the soundtrack for Batman Vs Superman, which will see Henry Cavill reprise his role as Superman and Ben Affleck step into Bruce Wayne's alter ego.

It was recently revealed that Batman Vs Superman has been delayed by 10 months and will now open on May 6, 2016 to "allow the filmmakers time to realise fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story". The film was originally slated for a Summer 2015 release.

Sand-sational: Traveller writers divulge their favourite beaches

Dec 18 2014 at 12:15 AM

What is it about the humble meeting of sand and sea that seems to enchant us? It's more than just the sum of its parts, a beach. It's more than sand to lie on, more than water in which to swim. It's romance, it's adventure and it's the time of your life.

Beaches mean so much. They're building sandcastles when you were a kid. They're family holidays away from school. They're the feeling of catching your first wave as a teenager. They're wild nights in foreign lands in your 20s, the relaxing getaways of middle age and the long walks of later years.Beaches are freedom. Beaches are an escape.

We're spoilt, as Australians, with beaches. When your home boasts places like Whitehaven, Cable Beach, Cox Bight, Burleigh, Palm Beach and Turquoise Bay, you come to expect a lot from that humble meeting of sand and sea. Yet still we travel in search of perfection, to discover and enjoy beaches the world over, to soak up culture and difference while getting a hit of vitamin D.

There's variety in beaches, easily enough to keep you amused for a lifetime. There are the hidden beaches, those secluded wonderlands that you feel like keeping to yourself forever. There are the bustling city beaches, European hotspots of carefully primped sunbathers and oblivious foreign gawkers.

There are the stunning, windswept northern beaches of Scotland, in whose cold waters you would never dream of dipping a toe. There are the spring-break beaches of the Caribbean, the surf beaches of Tahiti, the family-friendly patches of Fiji, the stunning backdrops of South Africa. Whatever your preference, there's romance, joy, relaxation and adventure in every beach. It's impossible to deny the attraction of that humble meeting of sand and sea.

Ben Groundwater

WHY I LOVE IT Maybe it's the memory of skimming the waves on a little Hobie Cat or maybe it's the "Say it, it will happen" attitude of the private island resort, but the beach on Vomo Island holds a special place in my heart. Most of Fiji's best beaches are found in the Mamanuca Islands and further north, in the Yasawa Islands group, north-west of Nadi. After all, this is where The Blue Lagoon, the movie that started it all, was filmed in 1980. Roll out of your beachside bure and it's hello, tranquil turquoise water! And prepare for your heart to melt when you see Vomo's baby-turtle breeding program.

WHAT TO DO Be sun smart and pack a rash vest. The snorkelling is excellent, but no-one likes burnt backs and calves. And don't spend all day in the water or in your hammock. The sundowners at Vomo's Rocks Sunset Bar are a must. The dry season is from May to October, and the rainy season from November to April.
