Southerners enjoyed the best view of the man-made satellite, which looks like a small ball of light moving across the sky when viewed from earth.

It crossed the sky at about 5.20pm and was visible for about three minutes.

In London, people were advised to look at 35 degrees from the horizon and look to the west, and people further north at a slightly lower angle.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: The space station will be passing over and it might look like santas sleigh.

Twitter was quickly flooded with images of the passing space station, including a festive snap posted by astronaut Sam Cristoforetti from inside the craft itself.

The platform looks very different close up, with six astronauts currently on board performing experiments in zero gravity as part of its 42nd crew rotation.

A portion of the International Space Station and the docked space shuttle Endeavour is featured in this image photographed by a spacewalker It is made up of a series of interconnected modules for habitation and banks of solar panels for power.

The space station is maintained by a number of countries including the European Space Agency, NASA, and the Russian Federal Space Agency.

The station's crew reportedly took delivery of tins of caviar last month, which will be consumed as a New Year feast.

ESA Time-Lapse Video Captures Six Months Of Space In Six Minutes From 'Blue Dot' Mission

Ever wonder what it would be like to watch a time-lapse video of space while listening to trippy music? Now you can find out. An astounding video released by the European Space Agency this week compiled 12,500 photographsfrom the International Space Station for viewing in just six minutes.

ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst was serving as a flight engineer during a six-month-long expedition on the space station when he captured these striking images, encompassing lightning, sunrises, auroras and cities at nighttime, according to an ESA press release. Seen from a distance, our planet is just a blue dot, a fragile spaceship for humankind, Gerst said in a statement this year. We need to understand the universe we live in to protect our home.

Gerst, a German native, returned to Earth from the so-called Blue Dot mission last month, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Maxim Suraev, the commander, and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman. All three have been monitored to see how they readapt to gravity after spending almost half a year in the weightlessness of space, according to an ESA press release.

The German, Russian and American documented their mission together on Twitter, posting photos of the crew and videos of floating water. The collaborative expedition included research projects on seedling growth, observation of meteors entering Earths atmosphere and studies of animal biology and bone and muscle physiology, according to NASA.

Red Sox Beat: No strength in numbers

With 2014 winding to an end, lets break down the Red Sox by the numbers. Some are quirky, some are telling, and some are just interesting.

In any event, they can shed some light on what we just saw, as well as the upcoming season.

0 Red Sox relievers who averaged at least 94 mph on their fastball last year. There were otherwise 57 such pitchers across the game, and this points to one possible deficiency as the team heads into the final portion of the offseason.

The Red Sox can hope a youngster like Matt Barnes develops into a late-innings power arm, and stay the course.

Or they can make one more key addition to whats shaping up to be a deep squad and add a legitimate power arm to the back of the bullpen. Junichi Tazawa (93.9 mph) is the closest theyve got, but they could use someone else in front of Koji Uehara.

.143 Average by Xander Bogaerts during a disastrous 60-game stretch from June 8-Aug. 30.

Theres lost and then theres what Bogaerts was in the months after Stephen Drew came aboard and punted Bogaerts from shortstop to third.

The assumption is that Bogaerts will never experience such an epic run of brutality again for the rest of his career. But the fact that he was in that vicinity at all should at least give the Red Sox pause as they project what hell give them this season.

It helps that Bogaerts hit .320 with four homers and 16 RBI the rest of the way. Those 25-game totals project to 25 homers and 100 RBI over a full season, which the Red Sox would take.

Listen, I still think Bogaerts will be a star sooner than later, but we cant discount the notion hell once again struggle.

Olivier Giroud Banned 3 Matches for Red Card vs. QPR

Arsenal will be without star striker Olivier Giroud for the foreseeable future, as the Frenchman received a straight red card in the team's Boxing Day match against Queens Park Rangers for an apparent head-butt.

The forward tumbled to the pitch after rushing into QPR's Robert Green, stood back up and clashed with QPR's Nedum Onuoha. The two seemed to clash heads, and after much confusion, the official reached for his back pocket and brandished the red, per ESPN FC:

Arsenal's official Twitter feed didn't see it that way, as they felt the 28-year-old did little more than shove:

Former England international Gary Lineker disagreed, and he couldn't believe the forward would lose his temper like that:

Arsene Wenger agreed with Lineker, per Arsenal's Twitter feed:

According to the Daily Telegraph's Henry Winters, the red carries an automatic three-match suspension:

Arsenal had dominated QPR up until the sending off, and facing a very busy holiday schedule, the Gunners will have to find a way to stay in the Premier League title race without their most consistent threat at the striker position.

Giroud's fury at the decision of the official was somewhat understandable given the fact Onuoha shoved him into Green, a dangerous move at full speed, but he clearly wasn't thinking when he got back up and clashed with the defender.

While the red card will be hotly debated in the coming days, there's no denying the France international forced the official into making a decision by launching himself at Onuoha in the first place.
