Gregory Maxwell: How I Went From Bitcoin Skeptic to Core …

Bitcoin holds a lot of promise as a decentralized currency, but there aremany technical issues to be tackled as adoption increases.

No one knows this better than core developer Gregory Maxwell, who has been contributing to bitcoins software since the early days.

A long time open-source and cryptography advocate, Maxwell was an early contributor to Wikipediaand worked for the Mozilla Foundation. He is now a co-founder of Blockstream, which has raised $21m with ambitious plans to push forward the development of bitcoin to better secure its future.

Maxwell recently talked to CoinDesk at the Future of Money Summit about his early disdain for the idea of digital currency, how he plans to create more core developers and the technical issues Blockstream intends to take on.

Satoshi Nakamoto introduced the concept of bitcoin on a cryptography mailing list back in 2008. Like many members of that list, Maxwell was initially skeptical of a digital currency not requiringthird party trust.

He told CoinDesk:

When bitcoin first came out, I was on the cryptography mailing list. When it happened, I sort of laughed. Because I had already proven that decentralized consensus was impossible.

Much of his doubt came from the fact Maxwell was anearly supporter of Wikipedia, becoming a contributor to the online encyclopedia in late 2004. He realized during those formative years working on Wikipedia that complete decentralization is hard to pull off.

Traditional consensus systems have needed an admissions control system, Maxwell said, referring to the fact that Wikipedia needed gateways to provide highly accurate information tovisitors.

Bitcoin gets around [admissions control] with the proof-of-work stuff. I thought, this is cool. Maybe some people will use it for anti-spam, but it cant be secure, he said.

An Extortionist Has Been Making Life Hell for Bitcoins Earliest Adopters

The call came while Hal Finney was in the final stages of his five-year battle with Lou Gehrigs disease. When the phone rang, his wife Fran was giving him a shower, with help from his nurse. Fran took the call, which came from a 911 emergency dispatch operator. Are you OK? the voice asked. Is anyone being attacked in your house?

Fran didnt quite know what to make of the bizarre call, and the operator kept talking, in rather pleasant tones. I need to let you know that you are about to have a SWAT team come to your home, the voice said, and theyre going to ask you to leave.

When Fran poked her head out the door of her Santa Barbara home, she found the building surrounded by police, and a helicopter buzzing in the air above. It was just days after a disturbed young man named Elliot Rodger had killed six people near Santa Barbaras University of California campus and the police were especially concerned. The cops yelled at her to drop her telephone and come out onto the lawn, and thats what she did, leaving her disabled husband, her son Jason, and the nurse in house behind her.

The police eventually cleared the building, and Hal Finney, a noted computer cryptography expert, waited on the lawn for a half hour, shivering in the morning air. Fran worried that Hal, who was unable to swallow, might choke on his own saliva. I was just panicking that he was going to need suction or something, she says. He didnt have anything with him except his ventilator.

The Finneys were the victims of a swatting, a nasty online hoax where the perpetrator calls up emergency dispatch using a spoofed telephone number and pretends to have committed a heinous crime in the hopes of provoking an armed police response to the victims home. In this case, the caller phoned 911, announced that he had just murdered two people, and said was going to kill himself too.

For a year, the caller had been demanding that the Finneys pay an extortion fee of 1,000 bitcoinworth more than $400,000 at the timeand according to Fran Finney, the FBI agents working the case believe that Hal was just one of several people extorted in this way by the caller. The incident further exposes the rather bizarre and often criminal element that continues to hover around bitcoin, a digital currency that grew out of the internet underworld but has since expanded into the mainstream.

Previously, Fran Finney has not publicly spoken about this incident for fear of compromising the investigation, but she spoke with WIRED after the investigating agent gave her the go-ahead. The FBI did not have a comment for this story.

What Im angry about is it took away some of the peace that he could have had for the last few months of his life.

When someone calling himself Satoshi Nakamoto first proposed the idea of bitcoin back in 2008, his ideas went largely unnoticed. But Hal Finney paid attention. He quickly became one of the worlds first bitcoin users. That early enthusiasm proved lucrative for Hal Finney, allowing him to join the digital currencys network and mine many bitcoins during the early days. The stash helped the Finneys cover Hals medical expenses, but it also came at a price.

Hal Finney died in August, and his wife Fran says he spent his final months being harassed by the online extortionist. He called the Finneys home number nine times in the two months after the attack, threatening to assault family members and expose their personal information. What Im angry about is it took away some of the peace that he could have had for the last few months of his life, she says. This was taking up a lot of his emotional energy.

Psoriasis: Targets and Therapy has published the original research Disease burden and patient reported outcomes among patients with moderate to severe psoriasis: An ethnography study.

As corresponding author Mr Siva Narayanan says Our ethnography study is one of the first of its kind in the Psoriasis arena to uncover and describe subtle or less well-defined HRQoL concepts and highlight the voice of the patient and their perception of their disease. As such, we were able to highlight the issues such as patients self-isolation, relationships with their partner and family, self-consciousness and anxiety, and the extensive planning and daily routines that are required to cope with everyday life and avoid uncomfortable social situations. We also exposed cultural differences in this study, including differing expression of emotional impacts and (un)willingness/(in)ability to discuss psoriasis with others, which contributes to severe psychosocial burden.

Mr Narayanan continues We believe that the findings from our study could aid families, care givers and healthcare providers alike in recognizing the psoriasis disease burden (from patient perspective) and accordingly suggest coping techniques to improve patient HRQoL. Further, our results could inform development and/or refining of PRO instruments in psoriasis.

As Dr Uwe Wollina, Editor-in-Chief, explains There are very few investigations on psoriasis available. This paper tries to bridge this gap of knowledge.

Travel takes us all over the world, but its key technology battles are happening in your pocket. Mobile use is booming. During 2014, Skyscanner flight searches from hand-held devices have grown by 152 per cent, according to the company. Mobiles will become ever more important, particularly as last-minute and in-destination booking booms.

Gone roaming

Of course, a mobile phone is useless if you can't afford to use it. I have written regularly this year about roaming, including how to avoid charges with apps such as Roamer (Android, iOS;roamerapp.com). Roaming will continue to be an issue, but welcome changes may arrive for European travellers. In April, the European Parliament voted to end roaming charges within the EU by December 2015. Details are still to be confirmed.

The convergence between phone and wallet will accelerate. It is not yet clear when Apple's mobile payments system, Apple Pay, will come to Australia. In Britain, Zapp is working with banks and retailers to add a mobile payment capability to existing UK banking apps. Zapp's service will launch in 2015.

Pay as you go

Some travel apps already have a built-in payment function, including taxi services such as Uber and Hailo and last-minute hotel service HotelTonight. Restaurant app OpenTable (Android, iOS;opentable.co.uk) is trialling payment direct from its app in several US cities, including New York and San Francisco. Set to launch in London, new restaurant app Reserve (iOS;reserve.com) also enables diners to settle their bill in-app. Paying with your phone will become more mainstream in 2015.

Wear it's at

There is already plenty of buzz about "wearable technology", particularly smart watches. The Apple Watch launches in 2015, but Android Wear devices including the Motorola Moto 360 are already on sale. Travel apps will learn how to make best use of this new hardware. For example, clever itinerary management app TripCase (Android, iOS;tripcase.com) automatically notifies a connected watch if your flight is delayed, cancelled or even if the departure gate changes. One of my favourite apps, Rain Alarm (Android, iOS, Windows Phone;rain-alarm.com), also works smoothly with Android Wear. My watch simply vibrates when rain is heading my way. More travel apps will work in tandem with smart watches by this time next year.

In 35 years, travellers can expect to interact with robots, holograms and Star Trek-like cyber reps instead of humans for their travel needs. Holidays via virtual reality headsets and fingerprint passports are also expected to transform the travel experience.

These are among some of the predictions that came out of an industry report from Euromonitor, which was presented at the World Travel Market (WTM) trade show in London.

In a survey that polled about 1,230 senior executives of the travel industry, more than half (59 per cent) agree that robots or holographic images are likely to displace human reps in the resorts of the future.

And though the public isn't as convinced - only 13 per cent of holidaymakers polled said holograms will be used - experts point out that the technology already exists, though in a more primitive form.

The iPhones virtual assistant Siri, for example, already carries out the tasks of a concierge by directing users to the nearest museum, hailing a cab or making restaurant reservations.

In September, developer IPsoft also launched an artificially intelligent computer system called Amelia, that can understand text and solve problems, and which will be embedded in humanoid robots, researchers point out.

"Androids and holograms being part of everyday life is still science fiction - yet much of the technology is already available so I am sure they will become science fact," said WTM's senior director, Simon Press.

Likewise, another landmark report released from Skyscanner this year also predicts that the future of flying will entail 3D-type chats with holographic images of spouses and children beamed into airplane cabins.

In their Future Of Travel 2024 report, experts predict that airports will be staffed with holograms rather than humans.

The advances in virtual reality technology - think Oculus Rift - are also predicted to give virtual travel a larger role in the travel-planning process.
