Boston officials urge protesters to show restraint during First Night

BOSTON Bostons mayor and police commissioner urged activists Tuesday to hold off on a planned die-in protesting police violence during the citys annual New Years Eve festivities.

Mayor Martin Walsh and Police Commissioner William Evans said the city will honor the protesters First Amendment right to demonstrate on Dec. 31. But they suggested the family-friendly First Night event is not the proper venue to address recent police killings of unarmed black men and boys in the U.S.

This isnt the event to do this, Evans said. If you walk down there, its all 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. I dont think they have to see [that] behavior. They dont understand what is going on. They are still very innocent.

Walsh agreed: At some point, we have to have a dialogue about where we go from here. Protesting is great to get your point across. But the conversation has to happen around what are the answers people are looking for so that we can explain what we have done as a police department and as a city. Weve done some hard work around race relations, in particular.

Evans suggested many of the protesters are from outside the city trying to capitalize on recent events and do not reflect the relations between law enforcement and the community in Boston. The majority of the community is behind us, he said.

If activists decide to demonstrate as planned at Copley Square, Walsh and Evans said they should be respectful of police and First Night revelers.

Now in its 39th year, First Night draws tens of thousands with a mix of ice sculptures, music, fireworks and other family-friendly activities. Its emphasis on wholesome, non-alcohol-fueled fun has inspired hundreds of similar celebrations around the world.

The group First Night Against Police Violence has said it expects at least 100 people to participate in its New Years Eve die-in, in which activists lie down in the street pretending to be dead.

Tech 2015: Block Chain Will Break Free From Bitcoin To Power Distributed Apps

In many ways, the crypto currencyBitcoin had a very bad year in 2014. It has fallen from a value of over $1,000 per Bitcoin last January to just over $300 today. This volatilityand the attendant speculation has led some critics, notably Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, to consider the cash alternative to be a form of the long con. In positive economic terms, he questions whether Bitcoin can be a stable store of value.

I often agree with Krugman, but I sense that his deeper unease is with what he terms the normative economics: is Bitcoin a good idea for society? He identifies his unease with the observation that, Bitcoin fever was and is intimately tied up with libertarian anti-government fantasies.It is hard to ignore the libertarian agenda behind Bitcoin and yet it is also hard for me not to see programmable currency as a necessary building block of the 21st century global economy.

My use of the word block is intended to evoke the foundational technology that underpins Bitcoin, the block chain. For the uninitiated (thats most of us), there is a public ledger of Bitcoin transactions that are published to a distributed network of participating computers. Once every minute or so a batch of transactions are released in a block to be validated by the network and added to the block chain. A unique cryptographic hash identifies each block andtransactionand permanently fixes them in chronological order.

To confuse matters slightly, block chain (two words) is different from Blockchain (one word capitalized) which is a software and wallet company that hosts a real-time browser of Bitcoin transactions. Blockchain, the company, just secured thebiggest capital raise everin the annals of Bitcoin. Indeed, as Biz Carson writes in GigaOM, investment in bitcoin is up as the price goes down.

Block chain, the concept, is even more important than Blockchain, the company. One way to understand why is to consider one of the most ambitious projects related to Bitcoin, Ethereum. Ethereum is an open source platform for smart contracts built on top of block chain technology. It recently completed a $15-18 million round of crowd fundingusing its own value token, poetically called ether.Stephan Tual, CCO of Ethereum, describes block chain technology as a method by which trust can be reached on an open network. Bitcoin is the first and best know use case, but Ethereum, says Tual, makes this technology applicable to just about anything else. Tual describes Etherum in the video below:

At the center of Ethereum are contracts that Tual says are programs that follow a series of steps every time they receive a message called a transaction. Ethereum itself is a programmable distributed network, in which all mannerof transactions and peer-to-peer agreements can be automated. The fact that Ethereum is by its very design fraud and tampering resistant, Tual continues, means that it offers a new range of solutions to everyday problems that are currently solved at great expense. According to Tual, these include voting machines, domain name registration, registration of legal documents, medical software and transfer of goods and services.

Networking innovator Paul Baran

If we are gettingtoo far out into the ether here, lets take a step back in time to the 1960s and one of the most important figures in the history of computer networking. Paul Baran was an engineer who joined the RAND Corporation in 1959. According to his Wikipedia entry, Baran took on the task of designing a survivable communications system that could maintain communication between end points in the face of damage fromnuclear weapons. He went on to become one of the inventors of the packet switching network, one of the key technologies that underpinthe Internet. He also articulated the key differences between centralized, decentralized and distributed networks. In terms of survivability, centralized networks expose a vulnerable single point of failure not present in less centralized networks.

Comets Remain Undefeated After Defeating the Milwaukee Wave 8-7

December 31, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets Milwaukee, Wi. (December 31, 2014) - What seemed like a soothing victory for the Comets turned into a nightmare in the last minutes of the fourth quarter when the Milwaukee Wave scored five times to tie the match 7-7 with 0:02 left in the match forcing a scoreless overtime followed by shootouts where goalkeeper Danny Waltman handed the reigning MISL Champions their tenth consecutive victory.

Forward Leo Gibson regained the top of the Major Arena Soccer League standings with a total of 41 points scoring the first goal of the evening and recording an assist, while Bryan Perez had a hat trick and one assist.

Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team only dressed 12 players as Max Touloute and Ramone Palmer missed the match due to groin and hamstring injuries respectively.

Shortly after kick off, the home team took the lead after Tony Walls notched the first goal of the game. However Gibson tied the match moments later followed by team captain's Vahid Assadpour only tally of the night before Milwaukee's Marcio Leite tied the match to end the first quarter 2-2.

Bryan Perez found the back of the net for the first time in the game, while Alain Matingou extended the lead after pushing in an Assadpour assist to take a 4-2 lead to the locker rooms.

The third quarter saw the Comets increase the lead when Perez assisted again by Assadpour tallied his second goal before Brian Harris hit a rocket, which goalkeeper Nick Vorberg was unable to save ending the quarter with a partial 6-2 score.

Down a man for five minutes due to a yellow card shown to Waltman late in the third, the Wave gained momentum and scored four straight goals, which came off of Luan Oliveira, JC Banks and Ian Bennett (twice) to tie the match.

With three and a half minutes left in the game, Perez completed his hat trick beating Vorberg with a deadly free kick to make it 7-6 forcing the Wave to take Vorberg out and add a sixth attacker, which resulted in a controversial equalizer with less than a second on the clock.

Andonovski received a red card at the end of regulation and the Comets played down a man for the first couple of overtime minutes but Milwaukee was not able to score the golden goal in addition to a pair of missed chances by the visitors.

Waltman left his goal and began an attacking play with five seconds left in the ten-minute stanza but was intercepted before Jonathan Greenfield tried luck from his own half looking to put the ball inside the empty goal but a handball from John Sosa denied his attempt. Oliveira was unable to convert the shootout.

Montenegro is fast emerging as one of the most picturesque and luxurious destinations in Europe.

Montenegro: Long overshadowed by Croatia, its captivating neighbor to the west, Montenegro is poised to become a world-class luxury travel destination thanks to its idyllic, 180-mile-plus coastline and rugged interior dotted with river canyons, glacial lakes and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the singularly spectacular Durmitor National Park. Already home to the stunning Aman Sveti Stefan resort, which hosted the wedding of Novak Djokovic in July, the Balkan country is luring other top-tier operators, including the esteemed One&Only chain, which will open its first European propert in Kumbor on Tivat Bay in 2016. Its also home to three UNECO World Heritage sites, including the old town of capital city Vilnius, a Baroque masterpiece and one of the largest old towns in Central and Eastern Europe; and the Curonian Spit, a 60-mile peninsula of spectacular beaches stretching south into Russias Kaliningrad exclave. Once heavily forested, its now the pride of the country and backed by Europes largest moving sand dune.

Long gone are the days when luxury travel was a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Todays consumers have more access to these services thanks to disruptive low-cost airlines and mobile booking sites.

Recently, Ive spoken with several travel providers who are racing to enhance the consumer experience, win new business and, ultimately, customer loyalty. Here are some highlights from those hospitality and travel leaders:

Supply, meet demand

Travel and tourism make up 9% of global GDP, and the industry is the worlds largest employer, responsible for one in 11 jobs. However, as big as the industry is, it has the potential to be a lot bigger. Within the next decade, it is anticipated that this industry will create an additional 75 million jobs. Look at the numbers and youll see why: the tourist population has doubled in the past 20 years and is expected to double again over the next 20 (reflecting the same increases in the middle-class population).

Customer demands, theyre a-changing

Such tremendous growth has changed the face of the travel and tourism industry. As more capital flows from east to west, as the middle class continues its surge, and as the Millennial generation which within 10 years will be in its peak earning, spending and travel years demands faster, customized services, many accommodation providers have moved toward a model that caters to these changing demographics.

Mobile travel services will continue to be a hot platform, as will social media, digital innovation and analytics tools in a bid to engage customers and build loyalty. By using the information captured by these tools, differentiated experiences are created, which motivate customers to visit more frequently, stay longer and spend more. Hotels, trending public

Recent hotel IPOs in the US have largely been driven by major private equity players. Several years of steady revenue growth and limited additions to supply have enhanced investor confidence, particularly where a dynamic growth story exists for the future. Other large, private owners have clearly taken notice, and this hotel IPO and venture capital trend will likely continue for large portfolio owners with the right economics and growth stories.

Hilton Worldwide, which in 2007 agreed to an all-cash buyout by the Blackstone Group, is a great example of the benefit of leveraging private equity funding. Chris Nassetta, President and CEO, shared with us his own experience. Since taking the buyout, he said, We have become the fastest-growing lodging company in the world with growth in rooms at 37%. We have the largest pipeline in our history, with nearly 200,000, and more new rooms under construction than anyone else in the industry. Most importantly, weve received a great reception upon our return to the public markets and are feeling very positive.

Last year "suitcase entrepreneur" Natalie Sisson visited 15 countries, ran a thriving online business and also found time to write four books, including a bestseller.

This year she intended to ease up a little on the international travel, but already has plans to add at least 10 stamps to her passport.

Sisson combines her love of adventure with building her online business and staging coaching workshops around the world.

Among other things, she'll play Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, speak at an event in Sweden, hold a business "mastermind" retreat in Spain, whip through London and spend a chunk of time exploring Japan.

Sisson, now 36, was working in London in 2008 when she became fed up with a long daily commute, "lots of bureaucracy" and being stonewalled at every turn in her well-paid London role.

Taking a leap of faith, she quit and went to Vancouver to compete in the Ultimate Frisbee world championships. While attending a business networking event in the city, she met a like-minded entrepreneur and the pair founded charity app FundRazr.

After "the best 18 months of education that money could never buy", Sisson turned her attention to building a business that would help others learn to escape the confines of an office, and also be able to run their businesses from anywhere.

In four years of running her own show, Sisson has increasingly been able to combine her love of adventure with building her online business and staging coaching workshops around the world.

Westgate Super Contest Winners Hit 76 Percent of NFL Picks

If you are like most football poolies or bettors, you struggled to stay above 50 percent picking winners in this wacky 2014 NFL season.

That showing put you way behind the winners of the prestigious Westgate Super Contest, who hit a record 76 percent this year while pocketing a nearly $740,000 grand prize.

CH Ballers, a four-member group that employed a team strategy to making five weekly picks in the Las Vegas contest (formerly the Hilton Contest and LVH Super Contest), hit 64.5 points out of a possible 85.

The previous record for accuracy was 60.5, points and the previous record prize was $532,000 last year.

Theres a lot of mathematics, and each of us kind of has our own little system, team member Justin Green said in an interview with Odds Shark.

But we kind of brought that all together where it wasnt necessarily just throwing out games. There was a lot of texting, a lot of calling, a lot of power rankings, different things like that.

Contestants pick five games against the spread each week and the top 30 collect prize money. The contest has soared in popularity in recent years with the number of contestants (who pay $1,500 entry fees) and the prize pool doubling in three years.

It has the potential to push into a $1 million grand prize next year if the trend continues, Jack Randall of OddsShark.com said in an interview Wednesday.

Odds Shark entered its super computer this year, and it finished well back in the standings. But one of the contestants sponsored by Odds Shark won the three-week mini contest (best record over the final three weeks of the season).
