The US National Security Agency has built a surveillance system capable of recording ''100 per cent'' of a foreign country's telephone calls, enabling the agency to rewind and review conversations as long as a month after they take place, according to people with direct knowledge of the effort and documents supplied by former contractor Edward Snowden.

A senior manager for the program compares it to a time machine one that can replay the voices from any call without requiring that a person be identified in advance for surveillance.

The voice interception program, called MYSTIC, began in 2009. Its RETRO tool, short for ''retrospective retrieval'', and related projects reached full capacity against the first target nation in 2011. Planning documents two years later anticipated similar operations elsewhere.

In the initial deployment, collection systems are recording ''every single'' conversation nationwide, storing billions of them in a 30-day rolling buffer that clears the oldest calls as new ones arrive, according to a classified summary.

The call buffer opens a door ''into the past'', the summary says, enabling users to ''retrieve audio of interest that was not tasked at the time of the original call''. Analysts listen to only a fraction of 1 per cent of the calls, but the absolute numbers are high. Each month, they send millions of voice clippings, or ''cuts'', for processing and long-term storage.

If you want a truly anonymous life, then maybe it's time you learned about Tor, CSpace and ZRTP.

These three technologies could help people hide their activities from the National Security Agency, according to NSA documents newly obtained from the archive of former contractor Edward Snowden by the German magazine Der Spiegel.

The combination of Tor, CSpace and ZRTP (plus another anonymizing technology for good measure) results in levels of protection that the NSA deems "catastrophic" -- meaning the organization has "near-total loss/lack of insight to target communications," according to Der Spiegel.

"Although the documents are around two years old, experts consider it unlikely the agency's digital spies have made much progress in cracking these technologies," Spiegel's staff wrote.

In comparison, accessing somebody's Facebook messages is considered a "minor" task for the agency. Similarly, virtual private networks (or VPNs), which are widely used by companies, are easily accessed by the NSA, according to Der Spiegel's report, as are so-called "HTTPS" connections.

So, what are these services and what do you actually have to do to use them?

Tor is basically a network that offers an easy way for people to mask their location when communicating online. Anyone can download Tor's web browser -- it's available on Mac, Windows, Linux, and smartphones. It's not foolproof: When using Tor, you're advised to sacrifice the convenience of browser plugins, torrent downloads, and websites that don't use "HTTPS encryption" if you truly want to stay off the grid.

And that's just if you want to mask your online habits -- messaging and phone calls require more steps still, meaning you also have to add CSpace and ZRTP if you want to hide those from the NSA, according to Der Spiegel.

CSpace is a program that lets people text chat and transfer files, while ZRTP is a form of encryption that protects mobile phone calls and texting -- it's used in apps like RedPhone and Signal.

BATAVIA After making headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior, former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden is among eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in April.

Dryden in October retired from Batavia School District 101. Dryden has said that in the days leading up to his retirement, he was facing a disciplinary action from a parent who complained about a lesson he gave on the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Dryden said he was facing a three-day, unpaid suspension for teaching an unauthorized lesson.

The district told him he would have to use only school board-approved sources in the future, Dryden said. But, he said, the school boards only approved sources are textbooks.

In running for school board, Dryden has said that he wants to create an environment that is collaborative. He taught for Batavia School District 101 for 21 years.

There are three seats open on the Batavia School Board in Aprils election. The terms of board President Cathy Dremel, along with the terms of board members Gregg Hodge and Melanie Impastato, will expire next year.

Dremel filed to run for re-election, along with Impastato, who was appointed to the board in June 2013 after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts.

Other Batavia School Board candidates include William Bill Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe, Michelle Olache and Ron Rechenmacher.

The issue came into the public spotlight Wednesday when people involved in the Tor Project, which develops the Tor anonymity software, took to Twitter to make their concerns heard.

Runa A. Sandvik, a staff technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology who's also involved in the Tor Project, said on Twitter, "Dear Apple, please take down the fake #Tor Browser Bundle you have in your App Store."

Sandvik pointed to an entry on the Tor Project's bug tracker where the third-party app has been discussed by Tor developers since December.

"Tor Browser in the Apple App Store is fake," the entry's description reads. "It's full of adware and spyware. Two users have called to complain. We should have it removed."

According to subsequent messages on the bug tracker, a complaint was filed with Apple on Dec. 26 and the company reportedly responded on Jan. 3 saying it will give a chance to the app's developer to defend it.

More than two months later, the Tor Browser app created by a developer named Ronen is available still in the App Store. It was last updated on Nov. 6 and only one of the three customer reviews so far includes a complaint about how ads are being displayed, with the reviewer noting that the app is very good at what it does otherwise.

The discussion continued in the weeks that followed on the Tor Project bug tracker, with developers proposing contacting Apple employees directly and public "naming and shaming" as possible courses of action.

"I mailed Window Snyder and Jon Callas to see if they can get us past the bureaucracy," Tor Project Leader Roger Dingledine said Wednesday on the bug tracker using his developer handle arma. "Otherwise I guess plan C is to get high-profile people on Twitter to ask Apple why it likes harming people who care about privacy. (I hope plan B works.)"

Japanese police believe that the majority of bitcoins stolen from Mt. Gox was due to insider tampering, a new report claims.

According to Japanese publication The Yomiuri Shimbun, the fall of once-dominant bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox was due to fraud, rather than an external hack. Sources at the Japanese Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) told the newspaper that out of 650,000 missing bitcoins, only 7,000 -- or one percent -- of the poached currency was lost due to cyberattack.

Approximately 200,000 bitcoins were recovered from an "old" wallet following the Mt. Gox closure, but hundreds of thousands are still unaccounted for.

As a result, the MPD's investigation of the failed bitcoin exchange now includes scrutinizing the behavior of one specific person who is "familiar with the exchange system" and may have stolen bitcoin from users by manipulating the system through fraud.

Tokyo-based Mt. Gox closed its doors without warning in February last year. The bitcoin exchange, once one of the most popular platforms online, filed for bankruptcy later in the same month. At the time, bitcoin belonging both to the exchange and users, worth approximately $500 million, vanished.

Creditors were given until November 2014 to file claims for compensation.

Rumors and whispers of fraud and an inside job have circulated since the exchange floundered. However, no fingers have been pointed specifically at members of staff or the firm's board. Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles was required to attend interviews with police in Japan at the time Mt. Gox closed its doors, but no-one associated with the investigation has suggested the executive is at fault.

Fraudulent trading goes against a statement issued by Mt. Gox at the time of the exchange's closure, which said a system bug which created a security flaw was at fault. The statement (.PDF) read:

According to the Yomiuri, "suspicious" accounts may provide the answer to the rest of the missing 650,000 bitcoins. In addition, traders became suspicious after discovering two automatic trading bots, nicknamed 'Willy' and 'Markus,' which appeared in 2013 at various times. According to leaked transaction data, the bots traded high amounts of the digital currency, before vanishing. Bitcoins handled by these bots did not correlate with user accounts.
