How Often Do Airbnb Employees Get To Travel The World And Use The Service?

This question originally appeared on Quora: How often do Airbnb employees get to travel the world and use the service?

Answer by Kyle Pickering, UI Designer at Airbnb, on Quora

I dont have specifics on how often Airbnb employees are traveling and using the service, but I can tell you its quite frequent. Whether its staying in an Airbnb far far away, or 20 minutes out of town for the weekend, we make the most of our travel credit.

By design, the travel credit program encourages travel. Employees are given travel credit at the beginning of each quarter. The credit expires at the end of each quarter. If you dont use it, you lose it. I think this is a great system because it pretty much forces us to go on adventures at least 4 times a year. Many employees go on more.

The travel credit obviously isnt just a perk. Its an important tool that gives us valuable insight into how we can improve and build on the experience.

The question asks how often Airbnb employees use the service, so I should mention that in addition to using the service as guests, many Airbnb employees also host. Hosting definitely helps us understand the product better, and it also enables more travel!

As far as working remotely while using the travel credit? Its pretty dependent on the team/project the individual is working on.

Apple testing super-thin MacBook Air

Apple is reportedly testing a new 12-inch MacBook Air that is super-thin, made possible by a new all-in-one USB port.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

9to5Mac reports that Apple is testing a new 12-inch MacBook Air that is significantly thinner and even narrower than the current 11-inch model. To get a laptop that thin, Apple (AAPL, Tech30) swapped out all of the MacBook's ports for a single all-in-one miracle port.

Today, MacBook Airs come with a USB port and a MagSafe charging port (and a headphone port -- that's staying). The ports are only a few millimeters thick, basically taking up the entire width of the laptop.

If Apple does make the decision to switch to so-called USB Type C technology, it will be adopting a new, much thinner kind of USB plug that basically does everything.

Type-C USB is capable of powering a computer, so users won't need a separate MagSafe charger. It can power a display, and it's significantly faster than "old school" USB technology -- fast enough to replace Apple's Thunderbolt ports.

Best of all, Type-C USB plugs are reversible. That means no more struggling to figure out which way the plug is supposed to go.

Related: This is the new USB connector - and it's reversible!

And it's tiny technology. The plugs are roughly the size of today's micro-USB plugs that power just about every non-Apple smartphone. They're slightly larger than Apple's Lightning port.

If Apple includes Type-C USB in its new MacBooks, which are expected to go on sale in the late spring, it could be just the jolt the new technology needs. The brand new Type-C USB technology started hitting stores late last year, but they haven't been widely adopted.

Vision on canvas

Only a few people manage to capture their flow of thoughts in the visual form. Thankfully, Sudhir V. Phadnes, a freelance painter, succeeded in translating his vision of spirituality and yoga into art works which were on display at an exhibition which concluded at India Habitat Centre this week.

With the flow of time, the field of art has expanded its realm of inspiration and the artists today have greater freedom which also increases the level of complexity. With such a vast range of inspirations and ideologies, it is very difficult to translate ones ideas and thoughts into images.

In such a sea of ideas, Sudhir seemed clear of his jurisdiction and he never let his boat wander in a different direction.

A firm believer in yoga and spirituality, Sudhirhas produced work which beautifully reflects the ethnicity of the Hindu gods and the alleviation of the Sanskrit mantras and slokas shlokas.

Using a blend of rich colours, his work is built on the concrete of a lot of circular patterns and imprints. With the help of wax, he has managed to create millions of circles working in harmony to form an image which not only soothes the eyes, but also activates the brain to put efforts on figuring the pattern. Some of the serene images on the acrylic canvas represented Sudhirs imagination of the different ragas of classical Hindustani music and bindu that symbolises the integration of the male and the female gender.

There was an old hand use of the effect of waves of water in the ragas and different colours to represent the panchatatva seen in the paintings. Sudhirs work also represented various forms of power mainly citing the power of the Sun on the Earth and the depiction of the eclipses formed.

Every artist has a different opinion and a different perspective. I am a firm believer in yoga and spirituality and my work revolves around the areas that help in maintaining in a peaceful state of mind. It takes me around 20 to 30 days to make a painting and I use colours according to the meaning of the painting. I take my time to create these as there is immense pleasure and satisfaction for me in what I do. Hard work, determination and a positive mindset are the key ingredients for a successful artist, said Sudhir.

Alex Gonzaga considers 2014 one of the best years of her life

Masaya at kuntento si Alex Gonzaga sa takbo ng kanyang career mula nang bumalik siya sa ABS-CBN noong 2013.

Sabi niya, Yung contentment kasi, hinihiling mo yan.

There should always be a conscious effort to be grateful all the time.

Pag naging grateful ka, dun mo mararamdaman yung contentment, just always be grateful and thankful.

Pag nararamdaman mo na nagiging negative, have a conscious effort na maging positive ka.

WELCOME 2015. Katulad ng mga nakaraang taon, ipinapasa-Diyos daw ni Alex kung ano man ang mangyayari sa kanya ngayong 2015.

Saad niya, 2014 is very unforgettable, not just for my career but also in my personal life.

Prisoners keen on cooking, self-help books

PLENTY OF CHOICE: Canterbury's three prison libraries carry more than 20,000 items between them.

Canterbury prisoners are devouring library books at an increasing rate with romantic poetry, cooking and self-help books proving popular.

More than 57,500 books and magazines were issued to residents at Christchurch Men's Prison, Christchurch Women's Prison and Rolleston Prison last year.

Well-read titles across all three prison libraries included The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

Other popular items included Guinness World Records editions, Lee Child titles, yoga books, dictionaries, music biographies, true crime books and copies of New Zealand legislation.

National Geographic, NZ Trucking and Dish were hot items when it came to magazines.

Canterbury's three prison libraries carry more than 20,000 items between them.

The collection is enhanced by a relationship with Christchurch City Libraries, which supplies 40 to 50 specifically-requested items a month.

Prisoners in high-security units order items through a catalogue.

Nearly 800 prisoners borrowed 5000 books and magazines in November last year, which the Department of Corrections said was a 30 per cent increase on the same month five years ago.

New Year, New You: Are Juice Cleanses, Detox Diets Healthy?

The holidays are over, and its time to get back on track after weeks of so-called cheat days. Many people will jump on the detox bandwagon, drinking green juice for days on end, but dietary experts say these popular cleanses are not the solution to kick-start your 2015 weight loss goals. Below are four reasons why you should not do a juice cleanse in the new year.

1. Theyre Dangerous

Beyonc Knowles shed 20 pounds in two weeks on the Master Cleanse diet for her role in the movie Dreamgirls. We all want to look like Queen Bey, but sticking to a liquid diet of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper is actually unsafe.

Most juice cleanses have a calorie intake of less than 1,000 calories per day, which puts the body in starvation mode in order to preserve energy, according to experts. Depriving your body of essential nutrients can also cause dizziness, nausea, constipation, fatigue and irritability.

Cutting out complete food groups in the long term may have adverse effects on an individuals health, Claire Williamson, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, told BBC News. A healthy calorie intake varies from person to person, but the American College of Sports Medicine recommends women eat at least 1,200 calories per day and men eat at least 1,800.

2. They Dont Work

Celebs such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Richie have praised the benefits of juice cleanses, including weight loss. But restricting calories and cutting out entire food groups can actually do the complete opposite, according to experts.

Although juice contains beneficial antioxidants, its also packed with sugar and lacks the fiber and protein in whole produce that fills you up, Jaclyn London, a senior dietician at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Womens Health. You might lose a few pounds from just drinking juice all day, but experts say youll gain it right back once you stop.

Theres nothing wrong with going on a juice fast for a few days, Dr. James Dillard, assistant clinical professor at Columbia University, told WebMD. But its not a great way to lose weight, because youll gain it all back.

Heavily restricting your calorie and nutrient intake slows the bodys metabolism. So, not only will you gain back the weight you lost and then some but itll be even harder to lose it again. In the long run, thatll sabotage your weight-control efforts, Katherine Zeratsky, a registered dietitian at Mayo Clinic, told MyHealthNewsDaily.
