A University of Otago scientist is involved in a super-computing breakthrough which could help keep top-secret information from prying eyes.
The discovery by a team of scientists from Australian National University and Otago's Dr Jevon Longdell has been hailed as a breakthrough in the field of quantum computing - a cutting edge form of computing which harnesses the power of atoms and molecules.
Quantum computers, which are still in their infancy, have the potential to perform certain calculations many times faster than today's computers by taking advantage of ''quantum bits''.
The team's discovery, published in the journal Nature this week, involved extending the storage time for a prototype quantum super-computer hard drive by more than one hundred times.
Previously the fragile nature of the way quantum information was stored meant information was lost in milliseconds, but the team's method, using a rare earth element called europium embedded in a crystal, meant it could be stored for up to six hours.
Dr Longdell, who is part of Otago's Dodd Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies, said the discovery could provide a cutting edge ''unbreakable'' method for keeping top-secret information from falling into the wrong hands.
Information encrypted using ''quantum cryptography'' was completely secure because the nature of quantum mechanics meant it was always possible to tell if someone had gained access to the information.
The method was already used in banking and for the transmission of results in a Swiss general election, but a limitation was that quantum information could be transmitted only about 100km along optical fibre before the information was lost.
Being able to store the information meant quantum information could be distributed ''literally in a box sent via the post''.
''Our goal is to extend this storage time out past a day. Once we reach this target we believe it will be possible to physically distribute [quantum information] between any two points on the globe.''

In his article The Internet Of Things, Robotic Manufacturing And The End Of The World, Chris Fox says, With the Internet of things, these robotic systems have the opportunity to become smart. He goes on to say, when systems are able to discover and remedy complex issues without any human intervention, we are not far from being ruled out as inefficient, or worse, unneeded.
MIchio Kakus book -The-Future-of-The Mind shows that the latest IBM super computer (the Blue Gene/Q Sequoia) is capable of performing calculations at 20.1 peta-flops or 20.1 trillion calculations per second. But to operate at these speeds requires 7.9 megawatts of power. To build a supercomputer that would approximate the computing power of the human brain would take a thousand Blue Gene computers. The energy consumption would be so great that you would need a thousand megawatt nuclear power plant to generate the electricity. And to cool this monster you would need to divert a river and send it through the computer circuits. The irony is that all of this computer power would only equal what we have in our 3.5 pound brain using 20 watts of power.
Increasing the size of a computer in terms of transistors and calculation speed is obviously limited by power, cooling, and a lot of physical factors. But to design a machine that is smart, self ware , and thinks like a human brain requires something like our unconscious mind, emotions and feelings to attain high level thinking.
Other Limitations
Unconscious mind The unconscious mind is a great reservoir of our experiences. It is not like a computer hard-drive because it records everything we have smelled, touched, tasted, or heard including perceptions, memories, feelings, reflections, thoughts, hopes -since birth. It is also the seat of our emotions and repressed or traumatic memories. There is no one place which stores this information, it is stored all over the brain from the pre-frontal cortex, to the thalamus, and many other different parts of the brain. The unconscious mind does not reason or think it simply stores all of the information needed by the conscious mind for the thinking process.
Feelings and emotions- We know that having feelings and emotions is necessary to emulate human thinking and it also may be a key to establishing consciousness. To add this to the robot would require designing something like our limbic system which is the place in the brain where emotions are generated. Hence, emotions are not a luxury; they are absolutely essential, and without them a robot will have difficulty determining what is and is not important. So, emotions instead of being peripheral to the progress of artificial intelligence, are now assuming central importance. The brain uses emotions as a value system to help determine what is most important. For a robot to attain human thinking, it would need to be designed with a value system and emotions even though many emotions can be irrational.
Conscious mind The conscious mind is a very advanced neural network that can access any relevant piece of information to be used in the thinking process and it can edit and revise these pieces of information. .At some time in the evolution of the brain consciousness led to our ability to become self-aware.
It is important to reaffirm that the brain does not work like a computer. Unlike a digital computer, which has a fixed architecture (input, output, and processor) neural networks are collections of neurons that constantly rewire and reinforce themselves after learning a new task. The brain has no programming, no operating system, no Windows, no central processor. Instead, its neural networks are massively parallel, with billions of neurons firing at the same time in order to accomplish a single goal: to learn. It is far more advanced then any digital computer in existence.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents the second most frequent skin cancer with more than half million new patients affected every year in the world. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a population of cancer cells that have been described in many different cancers, including skin SCCs and that feed tumor growth, could be resistant to therapy thus being responsible for tumor relapse after therapy. However, still very little is known about the mechanisms that regulate CSCs functions.
In a new study published and making the cover of Cell Stem Cell, researchers led by Pr. Cdric Blanpain, MD/PhD, professor and WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Universit libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, report the mechanisms regulating the different functions of Twist1 controlling skin tumour initiation, cancer stem cell function and tumor progression.
Benjamin Beck and colleagues used state of the art genetic mouse models to dissect, the functional role and molecular mechanisms by which Twist1 controls tumor initiation, cancer stem cell function and tumor progression. In collaboration with Dr Sandrine Rorive and Pr Isabelle Salmon from the department of Pathology at the Erasme Hospital, ULB and the group of Jean-Christophe Marine (VIB, KUL Leuven), they demonstrated that while Twist1 is not expressed in the normal skin, Twist1 deletion prevents skin cancer formation demonstrating the essential role of Twist1 during tumorigenesis. "It was really surprising to observe the essential role of Twist1 at the earliest step of tumor formation, as Twist1 was thought to stimulate tumor progression and metastasis" comments Benjamin Beck, the first author of this study.
The authors demonstrate that different levels of Twist1 are necessary for tumor initiation and progression. Low level of Twist1 is required for the initiation of benign tumors, while higher level of Twist1 is necessary for tumor progression. They also demonstrate that Twist1 is essential for tumor maintenance and the regulation of cancer stem cell function. The researchers also uncovered that the different functions of Twist1 are regulated by different molecular mechanisms, and identified a p53 independent role of Twist1 in regulating cancer stem cell functions.
In conclusion, this work shows that Twist1, a well-known regulator of tumor progression, is necessary for tumor initiation, regulation of cancer stem cell function and malignant progression. "It was really interesting to see that different levels of Twist1 are required to carry out these different tumor functions and that these different Twist1 functions are regulated by different molecular pathways. Given the diversity of cancers expressing Twist1, the identification of the different mechanisms controlled by Twist1 are likely to be relevant for other cancers" comments Cdric Blanpain, the last and corresponding author of this study.

SARASOTA - Hindu gods, Jesus statues and Buddha icons sit alongside fairies and Pagan goddesses on the shelves of Pixie Dust Metaphysical Boutique in downtown Sarasota.
Johnna White opened the shop in November 2012 in hopes of creating an uplifting and calming space for people to find their inner peace.
We really have something for everyone, White said. Spirituality tends to be a way to inner peace. Pixie Dust is a way to find that path.
Her shop offers spiritual guidance through intuitive and psychic readings, relaxation therapy, aura cleansings and past life regressions.
I've made Pixie Dust to be a different type of place," White said. I consider it a place of love for everyone of all different types of spirituality.
Spirituality came to White naturally. She grew up the daughter of a dowser, or water witch, in rural Kansas where a lack of city plumbing made her community dependent on wells. When somebody needed a well, her father would search for water using a willow branch that would pull toward the ground where water was present.
Watching that, you start wondering a lot about the end scene, White said. I just became fascinated with all those things you can't explain.
White started playing with a pendulum and trying to read a crystal ball when she was a kid. Since then she's become a Master in Reiki, or energy work, and is also a certified hypnotist, ordained minister and rune and tarot card reader. She also studied wiccan witchcraft and psychic reading in Salem, Mass.
It gave me a lot of different perspectives, White said.

Vatican City
Courses in yoga, Zen meditation, even extensive studies in church teaching and spirituality can never free people enough to open their hearts to God and his love, Pope Francis said in a morning homily.
Only the Holy Spirit can "move the heart" and make it "docile to the Lord, docile to the freedom of love," the pope said Friday at Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
The pope looked at how Jesus' disciples could fail to recognize and be open to the Lord's miracles, like his walking on water, the multiplication of the loaves and encountering him on the road to Emmaus.
"They were the apostles, those closest to Jesus. But they didn't understand," he said, according to the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.
"It was because their hearts had been hardened," he said.
"But how does a heart harden? How is it possible with these people who were always with Jesus, every day, who listened to him, saw him ... and their heart was hardened."
The pope said he had asked his secretary why he thought people's hearts become so closed and cold. Together they came up with a number of reasons that often affect many people in life, he said.
Painful and difficult experiences can cause people to harden their hearts because they do not want to be vulnerable to "another ordeal" or be disillusioned once again, the pope said.
He said the saying in Argentina, "If a person gets burned by milk, then he will cry when he sees a cow," expresses this idea of becoming fearful after a painful experience.
Excerpt from:
Catechism, yoga, Zen cannot open people's hearts to God, pope says
You can take a thousand courses in catechism, spirituality, yoga or Zen - but only the Holy Spirit has the power to open our hearts to the love of God, Pope Francis said this morning during Mass at Casa Santa Marta.
The Popes reflections came from the day's Gospel reading that recounted how the apostles were terrified when they saw Jesus walking on water. And the reason for their terror, he explained, was that their hearts were hardened.
Pope Francis said a persons heart can be made of stone for many reasons, such as, for example, a painful experience in ones life. But as he went on to point out, another reason for hardened hearts is because people are closed in on themselves.
Creating a world within oneself, all closed in. Closed within oneself, in ones community or parish, but always closed in. And this closure can revolve around so many things. But lets think about pride, self-sufficiency, thinking I am better than others, and vanity too, right? There are mirror-men and women (who are wedded to their own image in the mirror), who are closed in on themselves and are constantly looking at themselves, right? These religious narcissists, right? But they have a hardened heart because they are closed in on themselves, they are not open. And they seek to defend themselves with these walls that they have created around themselves.
The Pope said these hardened hearts in people can also arise from a problem of insecurity, such as those who barricade themselves behind the laws and rules, as though inside a prison, to feel safer and follow these rules to the letter,
When a heart becomes hardened, its not free and if its not free its because that person isn't capable of love, that was the fate of the Apostle John in the first Reading. A love thats perfect banishes fear: in love theres no fear, because fear is expecting a punishment and a person who's afraid doesnt have a perfect love. He or she is not free. They are constantly afraid that something painful or sad will occur, that will cause their life to go badly or will endanger their eternal salvation What an (over-active) imagination, because he or she cant love. A person who isn't capable of loving is not free. And their heart was hardened because they hadnt learnt how to love.
Pope Francis concluded his homily by stressing that only the Holy Spirit can teach us how to love and free us from our hardened hearts.
You can follow a thousand catechism courses, a thousand spirituality courses, a thousand yoga or zen courses and all these things. But none of this will be able to give you the freedom as a child (of God). Only the Holy Spirit can prompt your heart to say Father. Only the Holy Spirit is capable of banishing, of breaking that hardness of heart and making it soft? No, I dont like that word, docile. Docile towards the Lord. Docile when it comes to the freedom to love.

The astronauts and cosmonauts onboard the International Space Station now have three new crewmates who look a lot like them only much smaller.
LEGO minifigures customized to look like NASA astronaut Terry Virts, Roscosmos cosmonaut Anton Shklaperov and European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti were recently revealed as being on the orbital outpost. The tiny toy space explorers were among the gifts the crew exchanged on New Year's Day.
The station's resident cosmonauts Shklaperov, Alexander Samokutyaev and Elena Serova included a photo of the LEGO minifigures velcroed to a wall as part of a blog entry they posted to Roscosmos' website. [See images of LEGOs in space]
"There were gifts!" the cosmonauts wrote, describing their celebration. "From family, friends and colleagues!"
Each of the 2-inch-tall (5 centimeters) minifigures are clad in Russian Sokol spacesuits like the real crew members wore when they launched in November from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Each of the small suits even has the proper agency and national flags: NASA/USA for Virts, Roscosmos/Russia for Shklaperov and ESA/Italy for Cristoforetti.
Shklaperov's and Cristoforetti's minifig suits also feature the Soyuz TMA-15M mission patch, whereas Virts' figure includes a LEGO football, similar to one he has been seen tossing around on the space station.
The cosmonauts said that the minifigures were a gift from Cristoforetti. She received them from a training instructor at the European Space Agency, who commissioned them from the UK-based company Minifigs.me.
The minifigures were customized based on photos of the crew. The company was unaware that their creations were space-bound until they saw the cosmonauts' post.
"I've always been a huge space nerd," Minifigs.me codirector Nick Savage said in a press statement. "I may never become an astronaut, but it is amazing to think my little LEGO guys have."
"It is wonderful to know that they are up there right now, whizzing through space at over 17,000 miles per hour. We have shipped all over the world before, but never off it," he remarked.

The fifth official SpaceX cargo mission to the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract now is scheduled to launch at 4:47 a.m. EST Saturday, Jan. 10, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. NASA Television coverage of the launch will begin at 3:30 a.m.
The previous launch attempt on Tuesday was aborted with one minute, 21 seconds left on the countdown clock because engineers observed drift on one of two thrust vector control actuators for the Falcon 9's second stage and stopped the countdown.
A Saturday launch will result in the Dragon spacecraft arriving at the space station Monday, Jan. 12. Expedition 42 Commander Barry "Butch" Wilmore of NASA will use the station's 57.7-foot robotic arm to capture Dragon at approximately 6 a.m. Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency will support Wilmore as they operate from the station's cupola.
NASA TV coverage of grapple will begin at 4:30 a.m. Coverage of Dragon's installation to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module will begin at 8:15 a.m.
If the launch does not take place Saturday, the next launch opportunity would be Tuesday, Jan. 13 at about 3:36 a.m.
Dragon's cargo will support more than 250 experiments that will be conducted by the space station's Expeditions 42 and 43 crews.
