Harper Government Supports Manufacturing at Koss Aerospace

January 14, 2015 Mississauga, Ontario Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario)

Koss Aerospace will strengthen its aerospace production capabilities thanks to an investment of nearly $5 million announced today by FedDev Ontario Minister Gary Goodyear and Minister for Sport and Member of Parliament for Bramalea-Gore-Malton Bal Gosal.

Koss produces structural aerospace components such as wing ribs, floor and cross beams, bulk heads and seat tracks for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including Boeing and Bombardier. The federal funding of up to $4,985,210 will be used to buy and install new equipment to help the company produce larger structural aerospace components for OEMs both in Canada and in international markets, such as the United States, Europe and Asia. In addition, the new equipment will reduce lead times and production costs, giving Koss Aerospace a competitive advantage in the aerospace supply chain sector. The investment will also benefit the company's supply chain in southern Ontario.

The Government of Canada's repayable contribution is through FedDev Ontario's Investing in Business Growth and Productivity initiative, which aims to help established businesses to expand their operations, invest in productivity improvements and compete globally.

German Environment Ministry seeks unconditional GMO ban

Germanys Environment Ministry is hoping for a complete ban on green genetic engineering,but a Green party assessment warns that upcoming free trade agreements like TTIP and CETA could still bring genetically modified plants to the European market. EurActiv Germany reports.

After the European Parliament on Tuesday (13 January passed a new Directive on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in Europe, the German Environment Ministry is insisting on a complete ban on green genetic engineering in Germany.

It is very important that a political agreement be reached to generally apply the exclusion clause to Germany, emphasised State Secretary on Environment Jochen Flasbarth on Tuesday (13 January) in Berlin.

Under the new directive, EU member states will now be able to choose to opt-out, restricting or completely banning GMO cultivation within their borders. One of the leading proponents of such a legal ban in Germany is its Ministry of Agriculture, which is led by the Bavarian conservative Christian Social Union (CSU). The Ministry also supports a national ban on cultivation.

In a position paper from the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Minister Barbara Hendricks outlines that she does not want to leave any backdoors open for genetic engineering. The GMO law must be changed, so that controversial green genetic engineering cannot be used under any pretextin Germany, she states in the document, according to a report in the Sddeutsche newspaper.

Green genetic engineering has turned out to be the wrong track, Hendricks said. It is risky for nature and the environment and is not desired by consumers. For this reason I would like us to use the EU rules in the future, that can guarantee freedom from genetic engineering in Germany, she explained.

Meanwhile, an assessment from the Bundestags Green Party faction sees the GMO ban as being threatened by free trade agreements the EU is planning with Canada (CETA) and the United States (TTIP).

Titled Free trade - gateway for agricultural genetic engineering, the study is an analysis, conducted by Christoph Then, of the possible consequences of TTIP based on the CETA text. Then concludes that with TTIP, EU standards for the protection of GMO-free agriculture, such as measures against contamination and maintaining clean seed, will be lowered in the medium-term. The author also predicts changes in the approval procedure.

The studys main conclusions are:

State Secretary Flachsbarth decidedly dismissed concerns over consumer protection. No lowering of standards, such as a softening of GMO regulation, will be accepted through TTIP.

Zap Your Brain to Change Your Mood

I had my brain zapped to change my mood, and I lived to tell the tale. At a private demo with Thync at CES 2015, I experienced a futuristic electroshock therapy aimed at making me feel better.

It involved sitting with a small module attached to my forehead for 15 minutes while electric currents passed through my nerves to my brain.

Since the product is still being finalized, Thync declined to let us photograph the prototype module nor describe its shape, offering only screenshots of its app.

I arrived at the suite feeling emotionally distressed by personal matters (mostly my annoying boyfriend) and stressed out about the amount of work on my plate. As a Thync executive explained what the wearable really does, I was immediately keen to see if it could truly take my mind off my woes.

A rep stuck the modules onto my head and neck and started a 15-minute Calm session (I picked Calm, but Energy is an option).

As the program started, dots on the controlling smartphone app started to fill up while the nodes pulsed. I felt a prickling sensation as the current passed through my skin. The reps told me to keep increasing the intensity of the current to the point where it's just barely uncomfortable, using the app. They also instructed me to adjust the current as soon as I got used to a level of intensity. We're curious what the voltage of the max dosage might be.

After 10 minutes of sitting around watching the dots on the screen fill up, I started to feel relaxed and almost drowsy. How much that has to do with finally getting a chance to sit and catch my breath rather than the effects of Thync is hard to tell, but I definitely felt less bothered. The angry butterflies in my stomach seemed to fall asleep, and I could barely muster the wherewithal to recall what had upset me in the first place.

Thync told me the effects of the session would last about a half hour after the session ended. Sure enough, even the sight of an immensely long taxi line after I left the suite did not bother me at all. It was only 20 minutes after the session, when a couple in front of me got too affectionate, that I felt the stirrings of annoyance.

Again, it's difficult to determine how effective Thync was, given the possibility that testers (myself included) could have been experiencing placebo effects. Also, I could have become more relaxed just by sitting in a comfortable, quiet suite for a full 15 minutes -- a luxury most CES reporters don't have.

The company is working with the FDA to make sure its device is safe for general consumption, but was quick to assure me that the device was in no way harmful or invasive. That definitely has yet to be seen.

How do my hormones affect my cholesterol?

Despite decades of research on prevention, detection, and management, coronary heart disease is still a number one cause of mortality and morbidity in the developed world for both men and women. A major risk factor for both myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis is hypercholesterolemia.

Anti-aging medicine concepts and interventions were shown to be highly relevant with regards to hormone replacement therapy in a small clinical study by Dzugan et al. in 2002. The theory presented was the belief that high cholesterol levels were a consequence of low production of steroid hormones, i.e., estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. After youthful levels of these hormones were restored, total cholesterol dropped by 23.5 percent and normalized completely in 61.6 percent of patients. It is also important to note that individual dosing with bio-identical hormones were used. In this study all patients reported an increase in quality of life. So, it seems bio-identical hormone replacement therapy has been shown to be an effective approach in the control of hypercholesterolemia.

Treatment for high cholesterol (dyslipidemia) should start with optimal nutrition, diet, and ideal body weight, along with an aerobic and resistance exercise program. If appropriate for a low to moderate risk person, nutritional supplements are utilized. Some nutraceuticals that have shown to have the best clinical data for lowering lipid levels are tocotrienols, pantethine, omega-3 fatty acids, niacin, red yeast rice, probiotics, curcumin, green tea extract and plant sterols. However, those with high or very high risk will likely need pharmacological agents used in conjunction with diet, exercise, weight loss, and nutraceuticals, along with hormone corrective therapy.

Bio-identical hormone replacement used to correct estrogen, progesterone and testosterone to optimal levels helps to keep the heart and body healthy. Estrogen increases HDL (good) cholesterol by 10 to 15 percent. It also decreases lipoprotein A, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Estrogen also lowers homocysteine, as well as acting as a natural calcium channel blocker to keep arteries open, reducing the risk of heart disease by as much as 40-50 percent.

Progesterone without adequate estrogen not only increases weight gain, it also increases LDL cholesterol, decreases HDL cholesterol and increases triglycerides. Inadequate levels of testosterone also results in low HDL cholesterol.

Remember, your hormones are like a web; they are a symphony, working together for total body optimal functioning. If there is a deficiency in any one area, the actions of other areas will be affected. Replacement of your hormones should be individualized and monitored for adjustments as your body fluctuates in response to life's stresses.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Billionaire Elon Musk wants humans to settle on Mars, and he's looking to hire a passel of engineers in Seattle to help him get there.

Musk has publicly said he wants to colonize Mars. As the CEO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), he's got a company to do it.

In an interview published Tuesday, Musk told Bloomberg News that SpaceX's efforts to build a commercial satellite business will give the company the know-how and the infrastructure to make eventual Mars shots and a colony possible.

Musk predicted the office will eventually employ "several hundred people, maybe a thousand people."

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind the private spaceflight company SpaceX, says he will unveil his concepts for Mars colonization later this year.

In an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit Monday evening (Jan. 5), Musk told readers that the details of his Mars Colonial Transporter would be unveiled by the end of the year, and that the plan would be different from theDragon capsules and Falcon 9 rocketsSpaceX is flying today.

"The Mars transport system will be a completely new architecture,"Musk wrote in the Reddit AMA. "Am hoping to present that towards the end of this year. Good thing we didn't do it sooner, as we have learned a huge amount from Falcon and Dragon." [SpaceX's Plan for Mars & Reusable Rockets (Video)]

The goal will be to send 100 metric tons (110 tons) of "useful payload," he added. "This obviously requires a very big spaceship and booster system," Musk said.

This year, SpaceX will also reveal plans for spacesuits that will meet both design aesthetics and utility requirements, Musk noted. Although he did not specify where the spacesuits would be used, it is possible that they could form the basis forfuture Mars exploration.

SpaceX is the first private company to deliver cargo to the International Space Station, which it did for the first time in 2012. The company has a $1.6 billion contract to provide 12 delivery missions to the station for NASA. A second company, Orbital Sciences, has a $1.9 billion deal with NASA for eight delivery missions.

Elon Muskfounded SpaceX, where he is both CEO and chief designer, in 2002 with the goal of flying people in space. Last September, NASA picked the company as one of two firms to fly U.S. astronauts to the station beginning in 2017 under a separate contract. (Boeing was the other company selected.)

SpaceX's next flight to the space station, its fifth delivery flight so far, is set to launch at 4:47 a.m. EST (0947 GMT) on Saturday (Jan. 10) from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. During that mission, a Dragon resupply ship will launch toward the station, and SpaceX will also attempt to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket on an "autonomous spaceport drone ship" in the Atlantic Ocean. The mission was initially set to launch on Tuesday (Jan. 6), but a last-minute rocket issue delayed the flight.

While Musk discussed space travel possibilities that extend far into the future, he also mentioned some of the systems that the company is currently developing, including thereusable rocket test this week.

In response to a question about the planned Falcon 9 first-stage rocket landing, Musk said the stage would use "mostly gravity" to stay on the robotic ship, with "steel shoes over the landing feet as a precautionary measure."
