London travel fair gets an exciting glimpse of Camiguin, island born of fire

CAMIGUINS 20 shoals and reefs are a boon to divers and snorkelers

MANILA, PhilippinesWorld Travel Market (WTM) is the very English event that brings together the worlds travel-industry players to London in November.

Diana, the Princess of Wales, graced its high-profile 1985 opening. Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, opened in 1989 an event marred by anti-Apartheid protesters who threw leaflets at her. Queen Rania of Jordan led the 2002 opening.

In 2003, film star Michael Douglas caused a stir when he attended WTM representing the Spanish island of Mallorca, where he and wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, own a vacation home.

WTM launched in 1994 the World Responsible Tourism Day. It means taking care of a world that we seek to promote, preserving our heritage and cultures, and taking into account the views and needs of local communities and is one of the few tourism-anchored institutions that bridge the need to preserve heritage and respect local culture.

The exhibitions are attended by 186 countries and 5,000 exhibitors for the opportunity to present a diverse range of destinations to travel professionals. Events provide occasions to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business. In WTM 2012, buyers and exhibitors concluded deals that totaled 1.8 billion worth of business contracts.

Among the exhibitors from the Philippines this year is the island province of Camiguin in Mindanao that calls itself the island born of fire. It is an apt sobriquet with a touch of mystique. Few places in the world are as endowed with so much exoticness from its volcanic genesis.

There are more volcanoes than towns in Camiguin than towns (seven against five).

Two of these are active, the eerily named Mt. Hibok-Hibok (from an old Kinamiging word that means that which heaves; it last erupted in 1952), and the smaller peak Mt. Vulcan (first and last eruption in 1871); which is the islands last-formed volcano.

My Six Most Unforgettable Travel Experiences of 2014

As a seasoned travel writer Im blessed with over-the-top opportunities that often seem dream-like when I return to the reality of deadlines and my otherwise normal life. To solidify the best memories, each January I look back on the past year and write down my most extraordinary travel experiences. This year was filled with contenders but I narrowed them down to the six I dont want to ever forget. I hope that by noting my favorites, you too get inspired to live your dream however, whenever and wherever.

Walking Among the Moai of Easter Island

Early in the winter of 2014, our ship traveling from Chile to French Polynesia docked at Easter Island for two nights. Theres something about those mysterious stone-faced Moai (not Maui, not Mooie theyre pronounced Moe-eye.) Some things are over-hyped and then disappoint. But like the Taj Mahal and the Egyptian Pyramids. Easter Island lived up to its rep. Hundreds of statues, some lined up in a stone chorus line, some toppled like the fabled statue of Ozymandius, compelled me to wonder about how and why and more. And wild horses more of them on this green island it seemed than people added to the stark drama.

Seeing Paris Through a 10-Year-Olds Eyes

I took a darling girl to Paris for her 10th birthday this summer, hoping that the beauty of the city would enthrall her and shed a new perspective on my somewhat jaded eye about that city. It did, in small ways I didnt expect. She loved the sweets in the cafes, and the waiters who lavished her with whipped cream, almond croissants and macarons, and she loved walking among the creamy buildings, and the shopkeepers who presented her with trinkets. She discovered that saying bon jour gets a smiling response. At the Eiffel Tower she waited patiently on line to see the view from the top. And she had her ears pierced, just because she could say they were pierced in Paris.

Six Ads That Redefined The Super Bowl Ad

People like to throw around superlatives in discussing Super Bowl ads -- best, worst, funniest, most moving. But what about most important?

How can a Super Bowl ad be important? The six listed below helped change how advertisers, brands and Americans everywhere conceived of what an ad during the Super Bowl could be used to do.

Apple -- "1984" (1984) It was a big year for Apple. 1984 was the year the company launched the Macintosh personal computer, and it was the moment when the company decided to make the most expensive ad in its history. That spot is really what launched the Super Bowl of advertising, said Keith Quesenberry, a former creative director and current lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. Before that, there was a Super Bowl going on, and just regular ads ran during the Super Bowl.

Because of the sizable audience, he added, Apple decided to turn it into a special moment. The decision was not unanimous. Members of Apples board were very hesitant to spend so much money -- the ad had a $900,000 budget -- which included a hefty fee for Ridley Scott, the director behind "Alien" and "Blade Runner."

And, like so many Super Bowl ads, even though 1984 attracted a mountain of attention, it may not have helped move many units.

Chrysler -- "Imported From Detroit" (2010) Brands are not in the habit of buying Super Bowl airtime in the midst of historically bad years. But after being rescued from bankruptcy in 2008 and well on the way to its worst sales year since 1962, Chrysler needed to make a big bet. Thats why it laid out nearly $9 million for the 2-minute spot that was supposed to redefine not just the automakers brand, but the once-noble principle of buying American.

It took the perception of cars and flipped it on its head, Quesenberry said. This really had this big turning point.

A year later, the bet looked like it paid dividends: Chryslers sales rebounded 17 percent.

E*Trade -- We just wasted 2 million bucks This may sound crazy, but there was once an era when the streets of Silicon Valley were flush with venture capitalists cash, teeming with companies built on questionable business models throwing said cash around. On the one hand, this 1999 spot is emblematic of that time -- It goes back to the excess of the dot-com period, Qusenberry said -- but on the other, it was the first Super Bowl ad to explicitly acknowledge both its stakes and the place Super Bowl ads occupy in the American cultural imagination.

Plus, the ad gets bonus points for taking the Super Bowl ads chief talking point and turning it into a punchline.

The real super bowl winner?

The commercial tie-ins to major sporting events are more important -- and visible -- than ever and the NFLs Super Bowl may be the biggest man on campus.

Every year we breathlessly await the premieres of those clever Super Bowl ads and it takes players on the winning team about five milliseconds to start sporting caps emblazoned with their team logo and embroidered type proclaiming them Super Bowl Champs.

Small businesses 'will receive'

If only there were a way for small businesses to benefit from a little bit of this Super Bowl madness. Well, there is. The NFL in conjunction with local Super Bowl host committees has a Business Connect program that aims to benefit small businesses located in the general area where the game is held. Although its too late to apply for this years business connect program, heres a list of products and services that it includes:

Building Materials, Carpenters, General Contractors, General Laborers, Painters, Catering/Restaurants, Food and Beverage, Event Planning, Entertainment, Tables and Chairs, Tenting, Furniture, Printing/Graphics, Signs and Banners, Security, Staffing, Transportation, Venues, Decorations, Balloons, Florist/Flowers, Gift Baskets, Gift Items, Novelties/Promotional Items, Media/Public Relations, Audio Visual, Sound, Video Equipment, Lighting/Staging, Pyrotechnics, Set Design and Construction, Courier Services, Electricians, Electronics (Wire and Supplies), Office Supplies, Photography/Video, Port-O-Lets, Waste Removal, Barricades, Carpeting/Flooring, Equipment Rentals, Fencing, Generators, Golf Carts, Hardware Supplies, Heavy Equipment, Linens, Pipe and Drape, Scaffolding, Tour Services, Trailers, Vans, Banking, Computer/web, Consulting, Employment agencies, Janitorial services, and Temporary staffing agency.

Applications are being accepted for next years Super Bowl Business Connect Program, which is being held in the San Francisco Bay Areas new Levis Stadium. Businesses in the nine Bay Area counties can apply. However, the program is limited to businesses that are certified as minority-owned, women-owned, disabled veteran-owned, or lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Small business owners and local communities should steal this page out of the NFL playbook. While few cities will ever host a Super Bowl, there are all kinds of major yearly sporting events, such as tournaments and races. If there is one near you, see if they have an outreach program to local small businesses. If not, have your chamber of commerce and other business organizations, lobby the promoters to get something going.

Of course, when these kinds of events come to your town, there are many ways you can use them as tie-ins to sales and marketing campaigns. I will note, however, that if you dont want the NFL to come down on you like a 350-pound lineman, you need to steer clear of using the term Super Bowl for commercial purposes. They are very protective of that trademarked name and in that way they are far from alone in the world of big-money sports. Apparently using the phrase Super Sunday is okay and your customers will know what youre talking about.

So, get creative, get organized and find ways that big events can kickoff major sales in your small business.
