Winklevoss twins: Bitcoin will explode beyond $1 trillion

Hollywood Beach, Florida (CNNMoney)

The brothers, known for their legal battle with Facebook (FB, Tech30) founder Mark Zuckerberg, believe the controversial cryptocurrency is the payments network of the future. That's despite Bitcoin's 60% plunge in 2014.

They predict Bitcoin's market capitalization could easily skyrocket to at least $400 billion, or roughly the combined size of modern day payments companies like American Express (AXP), Visa (V), MasterCard (MA) and Western Union (WU).

But the Internet entrepreneurs are taking it one step further. They believe Bitcoin could one day morph into a gold-like asset class -- or even surpass it.

"If Bitcoin is a better gold or seen as a type of gold-like asset, then it could be in the trillions on a market cap," Tyler Winklevoss told CNNMoney. "We do feel those are very real possibilities."

Reaching over $1 trillion in market cap is hard to fathom, especially because Bitcoin's current market cap is less than $4 billion.

Many skeptics remain convinced Bitcoin was a bubble that will soon die out. Jeffrey Gundlach, the new so-called "bond king," recently said Bitcoin is "on its way to being relegated to the ash heap of digital currencies."

Related: Will Bitcoin ever rebound?

Buying opportunity? Don't tell that to the Winklevii, as they are sometimes called. The twins are huge backers of Bitcoin and stand to profit handsomely if their vision comes true.

Bitcoin gets regulated US exchange

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that allows users to exchange online credits for goods and services. There is no central bank that issues them. Instead, bitcoins are created online using a computer to complete difficult tasks, in a process known as mining. The digital currency is renowned for its volatility and has been heavily criticized for facilitating illegal activity, given that it can be used anonymously.

Jeffrey Robinson, the author of "BitCon: The Naked Truth about Bitcoin" is one such notable critic. He told CNBC previously that he believed it was a "pretend currency masquerading as a pretend commodity."

The insolvency of Japanese exchange Mt. Gox and the recent trading suspension at Bitstamp, the second-largest dollar-bitcoin exchange, has hurt the reputation of the cryptocurrency and has dented the price, which tanked by around 65 percent in 2014.

Monday's news caused its value to spike, however, and is likely to inject some much-needed trust back into the digital currency. It saw a 16 percent jump on Monday morning and was trading close to $300 for one bitcoin, according to industry website CoinDesk.

"To be clear, it's insurance against bitcoin loss," said Ehrsam "On top of the fact that we've been operating successfully in the U.S. for about 2 1/2 years, the largest bitcoin company has insurance to back it all up."

This is important news for the U.S.-based exchange marketplace, according to Jon Matonis, the founding director of the Bitcoin Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organization which aims to promote and protect the cryptocurrency.

"It will be a true floating-rate exchange with various order types," he told CNBC via email. "U.S.-based floating-rate exchanges contribute less than one percent to overall global trading volume for bitcoin, so I would expect that percentage to increase significantly."

High school basketball: Comets off to fast start, but want more

Rapid City Christian senior post Curtis Stahlecker isnt surprised with his teams fast start, coming off of last seasons strong finish. Nor are his teammates.

Its not good enough for the Comets, though, who closed last year by winning 10 of their last 11 games, and have opened 2014-2015 by winning nine of their first 10. Add it up and it is 19 of 21, a run most teams would be thrilled with.

The one problem is the two losses came in succession to the same team Philip. The Scotties ended the Comets season last year in the first round of the District 14B tournament, and wouldnt you know it, the two teams opened this season with Philip winning 74-63.

Other than that, it's all good for Rapid City Christian.

Weve spent the last few years working hard and looking forward to this, said Stahlecker, as Rapid City Christian hosts Edgemont tonight at Hart Ranch. Were not surprised to be where we are at now, but were still looking forward, knowing that we have to get better.

First-year head coach Kyle Courtney credits much of their early success to the hard work put forth by the team and last years coaching staff then head coach Jerry Wheeler and assistant Andre Truitt for laying the groundwork. The Comets were 13-6 last season.

Things had started to turn; they had some success last year, said Courtney, an Iowa native who had coaching stints at Christian schools in Alabama and California before taking over the Comets this season. What we have done, this group of boys have committed to the aspect of, there is no short cut to success. It comes in the offseason, putting time in and every day in practice.

The Comets still have a few stumbling blocks to overcome, namely getting past district and regional foes Philip, New Underwood and even White River.

Junior point guard Paul McLaughlin said they started out of the gates against Philip a little slow this season, but they werent family yet. He said they are still not where they need to be, but they are getting there.

Our coach is pointing us in the right area, so we have had some success lately, McLaughlin said.

Record numbers visit holiday show

Travel agents experienced a 30% surge in bookings as record numbers thronged the annual Holiday World Show in Dublin.

Organisers said more than 50,000 people attended the event, which took place in the RDS in Dublin at the weekend the highest number of people ever to attend.

The annual event featured over 1,000 travel experts from Ireland and abroad offering advice and a range of show only deals.

CEO of the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) Pat Dawson said the level of enquiries was so large that extra staff had be drafted in to cope with demand.

A number of our member travel agents exhibited at the show, and by all accounts, it was a stellar event. Our agents have reported up to 30% increases in bookings at this years show, and the level of enquiries meant that in some cases additional staff had to be drafted in to deal with the demand.

The association is also reporting a 10% increase in business at travel agents across the country.

Mr Dawson said the record attendance was a sign a booming travel industry here, which employs some 5,000 people and generated a turnover of 1.5bn last year.

Queues were out the door of the RDS and the attendees were engaged in a way that we havent seen in years.

We think the popularity of the 2015 show can be attributed to new buoyancy prevalent in the market and the great range of holidays available to book at the exhibition, the new airline routes for 2015 definitely have people talking.

Organisers said the record turnout for the show indicated the continued appetite among Irish holidaymakers for budget-conscious holiday options.

IMAGE:CDK6 is needed for leukemic stem cell activation (left). When CDK6 is absent, the LSC remains in a quiescent state and leukemia formation is prohibited (right). view more

Despite enormous progress in cancer therapy, many patients still relapse because their treatment addresses the symptoms of the disease rather than the cause, the so-called stem cells. Work in the group of Veronika Sexl at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna has given a tantalizing clue to a solution. In the current issue of Blood, the scientists report that the cell-cycle kinase CDK6 is required for activation of the stem cells responsible for causing leukemia.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are normally inactive, i.e. quiescent. When new blood cells are needed, for example to replace blood that has been lost, HSCs start to multiply and develop into mature blood cells. If the process is initiated at an inappropriate time, hematopoietic diseases such as leukemia may result and leukemic stem cells may develop. These represent a major challenge to leukemia therapy: they are quiescent and thus protected from elimination by the immune system and from treatment such as chemotherapy. Leukemic stem cells frequently cause relapse in cancer patients, often years or even decades after an apparently successful treatment.

Working with stem cells isolated from mice, Ruth Scheicher and colleagues at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna have investigated possible differences between leukemic stem cells and the healthy stem cells in the body. They looked in particular at the function of the CDK6 protein, which is known to be involved in controlling the cell cycle. Surprisingly, CDK6 was also found to regulate the activation of hematopoietic and leukemic stem cells, which it does by inhibiting the transcription factor Egr1. Upon loss of CDK6, Egr1 becomes active and prevents stem cells from dividing. In a further twist to the tale, the mechanism operates only when hematopoietic stem cells are stressed, e.g. in leukemia, and not in the normal physiological situation.

Scheicher is quick to note the significance of her finding. "CDK6 is absolutely necessary for leukemic stem cells to induce disease but plays no part in normal hematopoiesis. We thus have a novel opportunity to target leukemia at its origin. Inhibiting CDK6 should attack leukemic stem cells while leaving healthy HSCs unaffected".

Sask. man off to Malaysia for stem cell treatment

A 28-year-old North Battleford man plans to head to Malaysia next month for a stem cell treatment he hopes will cure his debilitating liver disease.

Kyle Allan is able to pay for the trip thanks to the success of a gofundme.com campaign, which rocketed past its $25,000 goal in just one week.

As of Monday, he'd raised $61,425.

"It was mind blowing," Allan said.

His girlfriend, Valerie Blais, who set up the campaign, had no idea it would do so well and had even expected to do additional fundraising.

"It's completely overwhelming. It shows so much love and support from people in our lives and the community," she said.

When Allan was about three years old, he repeatedly contracted pneumonia and other infections, and was diagnosed with Common Variable Immunodefiency, for which no cure has been identified.

He previously received an IV treatment once a month, which has now increased to once per day. Growing up, he was often tired and didn't have as much energy as other children, but as he got into his teens he improved.

"I was pretty much a normal kid," he said.

He became a welder and worked in Fort McMurray, then got his journeyman qualifications at SIAST. He was about to head back north when, on Aug. 18, 2008, he couldn't get out of bed.
