This is what Steve Jobs was like on LSD

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

When Daniel Kottke reminisces about his college days in the early '70s, he describes them as pretty prosaic. A freshman dorm room filled with books on spirituality, Pink Floyd playing in the background, a pastoral college campus -- and hallucinogens.

The only thing, he says, that was in any way remarkable about his LSD trips was his fellow traveler: Steve Jobs.

Kottke was one of Apple's first employees, and before the world knew Steve Jobs as the creator of Apple, Kottke knew him as a friend he used to trip with at Reed College.

He was uncomfortable discussing these experiences while Jobs was alive, but was willing to share them with CNNMoney now.

"We would take psychedelics and whole new vistas opened up," Kottke said.

The two initially bonded over their interest in "Be Here Now," a book on things like psychedelics and spirituality. This became the foundation for a fast friendship.

"We were monk-wannabes," Kottke said. They were on a quest to better understand consciousness using an LSD varietal known as Orange Sunshine as their Sherpa.

"We were ... in a meditative space," Kottke said. "But that's partly because we were reading books about chakras and psychic energy and the chi and the Kundalini serpent that was going to rise up our spine."

Kottke had access to LSD, and Jobs was an enthusiast. They would read, go on hikes and wander the rose gardens at Reed College. Jobs has been quoted as saying that LSD was one of the most profound experiences of his life, and the name for Apple came from his experience working on the apple farm of another fellow tripper from Reed.

Tom Brady is unique when it comes to his religion.

The New England Patriots quarterback, a symbol of success, fame and fortune, believes in everything. According to The New York Times Mark Leibovich, Bradys faith falls on a more spiritual path since he doesnt believe in a specific God or religious practice. Rather, he has a mix of everything.

Leibovich surveyed Bradys house and saw Bibles all over the place. And back in 2009, Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen got married in a small Catholic church in Santa Monica, California. Leibovich also saw menorahs in Bradys apartment.

Were not Jewish, Brady told Leibovich. But I think were into everything. I dont know what I believe. I think theres a belief system, Im just not sure what it is.

Brady has mentioned God before in interviews. In one interview for 60 Minutes, Brady talked about God and how theres got to be more to life than winning Super Bowls, which, he said, inspired some believers to mail home copies of the Bible. According to Leibovich, Brady marveled in how his younger self had a different set of religious views than he does today.

Bradys unique perspective on faith is surprising, given that Brady grew up in a Catholic home, according to Hollowverse, an information website on the religious and political views of celebrities. And Brady has stepped away from his faith in certain aspects, like having a child out of wedlock with supermodel Bridget Moynihan.

It might be safe to say that Brady is not a devout Catholic, according to the Hollowverse. Hes more concerned with winning Super Bowls and having children with extremely beautiful women. In other words, hes no Tim Tebow.

South Africa: The Ongoing Challenge to Decriminalise Marijuana and Other Sacramental Substances

analysis

The arrest in December of a 70-year-old Somerset West woman who had been offering psilocybin - known also as sacred mushrooms - during spiritual growth sessions involving hundreds of people over the past five years has highlighted the ongoing question of the illegal use of psychoactive sacraments in religious and traditional rituals or for personal adult consumption.

A current constitutional court challenge by the 'dagga couple', Julian Stobbs and Myrtle Clarke, might help her case. By MARIANNE THAMM.

For the past five years in her home, located only three blocks from the Somerset West police station, the 70-year-old Monica Cromhout has openly hosted SOMA ceremonies - where a small quantity of the hallucinogenic psilocybin found in mushrooms - is ingested by participants, some of whom make the journey from overseas - hoping to find healing and spiritual enlightenment.

On the night of 20 December 2014, Cromhout hosted one such session at The Healing House, as Monica's home is known. The house is surrounded by an unfenced verdant garden with pathways, a tree house for those who wish to stargaze, as well as a ceremony room lined with comfortable cushions for reclining. Those attending usually do so by invitation or through ...
