Spending a lot of money on holidays doesnt mean you will have a better time than someone who spends less. Ive been travelling the world for close to a decade on a budget and found that following a few simple tips makes it easy to travel on a budget and still have an amazing trip.

Saving money on the road requires us to break away from a conventional mindset that travel is expensive. This mindset is pushed by a travel industry built on people spending more money, that tells us that we need to stay in hotels, eat at world-class restaurants, or go on packaged tours to have a good time. Of course, thats just not the case, and there are plenty of ways to have a good tripwithout spending a fortune.

Below are various ways to save in any destination around the world from cheaper locales like Thailand to more expensive countries like Norway. They will save you big money with minimal effort. Ive traveled to over 75 countries in the last eight years. I even wrote a book on budget travel called How to Travel the World on $50 a Day. I know how unbelievable it can sound to say you can travel the world on a budget comfortably, but I know its possible because Ive done it firsthand. Below are some of the best ways to save money in any destination because when you spend less, you can travel more.

When you dont need a luxury suite, there are a variety of options for finding housing that wont cost you much. Whether you work in exchange for room and board or simply find a cheap hostel, here are a few alternatives to hotels.

The best way to save on accommodation is not paying for it and a hospitality exchange allows you to do exactly that. Youve probably heard of couch surfing, but there are more options than that. Hospitality exchange services connect travellers with locals offering a free place to stay. Sometimes its a bed, sometimes its a couch, and sometimes its literally just space on the floor. These sites work by having users sign up, create profiles, and connect with each other. The expectation is that one day, those who were hosted will pay it forward and host someone else. Youre not required to host anyone in the future, but most people find the experience of being hosted rewarding and do host others. There are four major hospitality exchange organisations:

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, or WWOOFing, matches people looking for work on farms with farms that need labour. You get free room and board in exchange for work! Its an incredible way to stay in one area for free. You dont need any farm experience either. There is no international WWOOF membership, so youll have to buy a membership from each individual WWOOFing countrys organisation. Annual membership usually costs around $US30 per country. Obviously this solution isnt for everyone and is limited to certain areas, but it can be a good way to gain interesting experience while saving money.

House sitting is exactly like it sounds while someone else is on holiday, you watch their house and take care of any pets they have while they are gone. House sitting commitments tend to be long term (i.e. a month or more) and are suited for travellers who want to stay longer in one specific place. The biggest house sitting websites are:

Perhaps the most common solution for travellers looking to save money, hostels are one of the cheapest forms of paid accommodation in the world. Hostels are places that offer shared (and sometimes private) rooms for travellers looking for a cheap place to stay. These dormitory-style rooms usually have between four and 20 beds. The more beds, the cheaper the room.

Hostel prices are about a third of the cost of a hotel room. A cheap hotel in New York City is $US100 USD, while a dorm room is $US30. In Thailand, where a hotel is $US30 USD or more, you can get a cheap dorm room for $US5. In Australia, a dorm room is $US25 USD versus $US110 for a hotel.

One option for group travellers, or even people travelling alone who arent interested in hostels, is serviced apartments. These are apartments owned, furnished, and taken care of by someone else that you rent like a hotel room. People list an extra room, couch, or property they own and want to make money from. For one day a year, weak computer nerds like me pretend to be men by watching NFL football and eating junk food. Truth be told, I enjoy watching American football, but for the most part, I am happier watching Big Bang Theory or The Bachelor with a nice cup of herbal tea!

Don't worry, if you are a computer nerd that isn't interested in watching sports, you can at least use technology to enhance the Super Bowl experience. How? With Twitter, of course! TORONTO - Gordie Howe's son says the hockey legend's stroke symptoms have improved since his treatment with stem cells at a Mexican clinic in early December and he wants him to repeat the procedure.

But regenerative medicine experts say there's no scientific evidence such therapies work, and in some cases they can be seriously harmful or even deadly.

The 86-year-old Howe suffered two disabling strokes late last year. In December, the family took him to a Tijuana clinic where he received stem cell injections as part of a clinical trial being run under a licensing agreement with Stemedica Cell Technologies of San Diego, Calif.

The experimental treatment involved injecting neural stem cells into Howe's spinal canal, along with intravenous infusions of mesenchymal stem cells, which are found in bone marrow, fat and umbilical cord blood.

Marty Howe said his father can walk again, his speech is improving and he is regaining some of the weight he lost following the strokes.

"After his stem cell treatment, the doctor told us it was kind of an awakening of the body, and it was all that," he told The Canadian Press while in Calgary for a hockey promotion event Tuesday. "They call it the miracle of stem cells and it was nothing less than a miracle."

However, experts in the field question whether stem cells are responsible for Howe's improvement and caution that most so-called stem cell therapies have not gone through rigorous scientific trials, nor have they been approved as treatments by Health Canada or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mick Bhatia, director of McMaster University's Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, said there are many unknowns in Howe's case, such as how many stem cells were administered, were tests done to see whether they migrated to the targeted area of the body, and did they take up residence where they might have some effect or simply disappear?

"Is this a transient effect, or is it really a perceived or somewhat of a placebo effect and is there something really happening? Scientifically and biologically that is important," Bhatia said Wednesday from Hamilton.

And because Howe received adult stem cells produced from donor cells, he may have needed to take drugs to prevent an immune reaction as well as anti-inflammatory medications, he said.

People with Multiple Sclerosis are holding out great hope tonight over clinical trials that will begin right here in Ottawa. It's part of an international study into special stem cells that have the ability to repair damage. There has been much talk before about stem cells and their therapeutic potential. This research goes beyond that, looking at the possibility that these particular mesenchymal stem cells might be able to fix nerves ravaged by MS.

For people like 60-year-old Margo Murchison, it is a ray of hope in a bleak future living with her disease that has now become chronic.

Id like to live a life like everybody else, says Murchison, be free to do whatever I want and help other people instead of relying on them to help me.

Murchison was 27 years old, a French Immersion teacher, when she was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disabling disease of the central nervous system. She has since lost the use of her legs, her eyesight on two occasions and now one hand. But her mind is crisp and clear and full of hope for these clinical trials being driven right here in Ottawa.

With the potential of stem cells, it's an exciting time to be dealing with a chronic illness. There is great hope for the future.

Dr. Mark Freedman is the man giving her that hope. The Ottawa neurologist, who is the director of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, is leading the first Canadian clinical trial into the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for MS. The trial is called MESCAMS (MEsenchymal Stem Cell therapy for CAnadian MS patients) and will evaluate the safety and potential benefits of MSCs that will be extracted from a patients own bone marrow, expanded in a specialized lab and then infused back into the same patient.

These stems cells have unique properties that help reduce inflammation. Most importantly, they promote repair.

Though this project we are launching is looking primarily at the biological property we know they have which is turning down the inflammation, explains Dr. Freedman, we are also going to be very, very closely monitoring them for repair. If we can pick that up in a way that can be reproduced and measured over time, the next phase is to go after patients with damage and fix it.

Nine countries worldwide are taking part in this research. Dr. Freedman is the lead for the Canadian trial and the co-lead of the international study that will involve 200 patients overall. Dr. A. Uccelli of Genoa, Italy is the other co-lead. Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world.

On the profile, Ulbricht gives vague answers about his employment, but hardly looks the part of an alleged kingpin.Hedescribes himself as a "scientist turned entrepreneur." The week of September 11, 2013, the log describes getting "covered in poison oak" and going on "a first date with amelia from okc."
