Match Preview: Comets Face the Chicago Mustangs for the Third Time

January 29, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (January 29, 2015) - Less than a week from earning a shorthanded overtime victory at the Arena Monterrey, which meant the Major Arena Soccer League Central Division championship, the undefeated Missouri Comets (15-0) will face the Chicago Mustangs (9-5) for the third time this season.

The Comets will be wearing special edition gold jerseys to support the fight against pediatric cancer, which will be auctioned at the end of the match. All proceeds will benefit Dalton Everette Burner Foundation and Camp Quality USA. In addition, the halftime break will feature Calvin and other mascots playing a scrimmage game.

Both teams will face off for the third time this season after the Comets earned a 12-6 victory at the Sears Centre on week two before crushing the Mustangs 15-6 at home last December 6.

Forward Leo Gibson will look to remain at the top of the league standings where he currently stands first with a total of 59 points recording 31 goals and 28 assists.

Last weekend, the Mustangs were awarded a 3-0 forfeit win by the MASL after the Tulsa Revolution cancelled their match due to complications moving the turf from the Cox Business Center to their new venue.

The Mustangs are led by Efrain Wilo Martinez who has played all thirteen games recording a total of 24 points with 11 goals and 13 assists. Miguel Vaca follows closely with 20 points (12 goals and eight assists).

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski's team has five more regular season games (three at home and two on the road) before the beginning of the playoffs.

Next up, the Comets will hit the road when they visit the St. Louis Ambush on Friday, February 6 and the Wichita B-52s on Sunday, February 8.

Young people from 15 to 24 are in with a chance to win international travel by entering the World Wetlands Day youth photo competition.

The Department of Conservation is encouraging young people to take a picture of their favourite wetland on their phone or camera, and upload it to the World Wetlands Day website between 2 February and 2 March 2015. The winner will receive a free flight to a famous wetland of their choice anywhere in the world, courtesy of Star Alliance Biosphere Connections.

World Wetlands Day on 2 February marks the adoption of the International Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2015 is Wetlands for our future; Te tirohanga mua m ng mria.

Wetlands can be broadly defined as areas where the presence of water is the primary factor controlling the environment and associated plant and animal life. There are a number of accessible places frequented by people that are classified as wetlands including, lakes, large reservoirs and estuaries.

Our 25th Year of Retirement by Age 62

At the age of 62, we're beginning our 25th year of financial independence. That's quite a feat!

From the beaches on Nevis, West Indies, to the shores of Phuket, Thailand, we have traveled extensively through the past two-and-a-half decades, and what a ride it's been! Young and strong in those early years, we were willing and able to tackle just about anything. Now we tend to be a bit more cautious, but we're not letting up. Track spending This is basic and oh-so-essential. When you track what you are spending, you know exactly where your money is going, and you're able to make decisions clearly and in real time about your cash outlay.

Throughout the day, take note of everything you spend, either on paper or with a smartphone app such as HomeBudget or Mint. Tracking your spending will be a big stress reliever, and your data entry takes only a couple of minutes a day.

How much do you want to spend per year? If your goal is to spend $30,000 annually, this gives you an $82 a day average to maintain. If you can afford to live on $60,000 a year, you have $164 a day to spend.

If you've seen this year's list of Super Bowl advertisers, you might be questioning exactly what Wix is.

But while tech companies like Wix aren't quite household names, they've been betting big on Super Bowl ads for decades.

Most famously, Apple (AAPL, Tech30) did so with its 1984 Super Bowl Ad.

"It was an insane success," said Kelly O'Keefe, professor of brand strategy at the Virginia Commonwealth University Brand Center.

In those days, Apple was hardly the Goliath it is today. The company had gone public just four years prior. And its Super Bowl ad introduced the Macintosh, its first mass-market personal computer, to the world.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Apple's ad made the American event one of the year's biggest advertising stages and led to increased production values across the board.

Wix is hoping to take a play from Apple's book -- and make a name for its brand with the 100 million people watching the Super Bowl.

Retired teacher Margo Murchison does not qualify for the testing of stem cell treatments for MS but she says the possible breakthrough gives her hope.

At a time when there is growing concern about patients travelling overseas for unproven treatments, Canadian doctors are beginning clinical trials of stem cell therapy they say offers real hope for people with multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Mark S. Freedman, director of the multiple sclerosis research unit at The Ottawa Hospital, will lead the Canadian trials which are funded with a $4.2-million grant from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and the Multiple Sclerosis Scientific Research Foundation.

This is the first major stem cell trial that is going on in MS right now around the world, he said. There is so much noise about stem cells in general and the hype that surrounds them, we are doing this study properly so we can answer the question for once and for all.

Recent publicity around hockey legend Gordie Howes stem cell treatment in Mexico after he had a stroke has focused attention on a growing international stem cell tourism industry offering therapies that have not been approved for use in Canada or the United States.

Freedman said he sees patients who are willing to travel overseas to try risky and expensive treatments out of desperation. He said he worries that foreign clinics are preying on patients desperation by providingtreatment that is not properly tested, is not proven to do any good and could carryserious risks. That is why it is crucialto conductproper clinical trials, said Freedman, who is also a professor at the University of Ottawa.

The potential for stem cell treatment is significant in Canada, which has the highest rates of MS in the world.

The study announced Thursday will involve treating 40 patients 20 in Ottawa and 20 in Winnipeg with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), extracted from the patients own bone marrow and then grown in a specialized lab. The cells are later given to the same patient intravenously.

The cells are less risky to use than other stem cell therapies, and their potential seems to come from their ability to modify the immune system, by reducing inflammation, fas well as helping to prevent and repair tissue damage. Patients do not require chemotherapy to kill their immune system as they do with some other treatments.

The Canadian randomized control trials join others underway around the world. In total, 200 patients in nine countries will be part of the trial that could result in routine clinical treatment for MS patients.

Trial to test stem cells in MS patients

TORONTO - Two Canadian research centres are gearing up for a clinical trial to determine if a type of stem cell can help alleviate the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

Researchers at the Ottawa Hospital and Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre will each recruit 20 MS patients for the trial that will test whether mesenchymal stem cells can reduce inflammation and even help repair damage already caused by the disease.

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that creates inflammation in the central nervous system, resulting in injury to myelin, the protective sheath that covers nerves. This damage can create a host of symptoms, leading to varying degrees of physical disability and cognitive impairment.

Mesenchymal stem cells, which are found in bone marrow, fat, skin tissue and umbilical cord blood, have the ability to modify the immune system and reduce inflammation, said neurologist Dr. Mark Freedman of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, who is leading the clinical trial.

Freedman said researchers want to determine if these stem cells can demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties in patients with MS.

"But that's not why we're doing it," he said of the study, called MESCAMS ("MEsenchymal Stem cell therapy for CAnadian MS patients"). "We have lots of drugs that can control inflammation in multiple sclerosis that's what all the new medicines do."

"The ultimate hope is that we will be able to exploit some of their other very important biological properties, which is to promote repair."

The two research centres are ready to begin enrolling patients for the trial, which has specific acceptance criteria. While most of those accepted will likely have the relapsing-remitting form of the disease, Freedman said some people with more severe primary- or secondary-progressive MS may also be eligible if they fit the criteria.
