10 Best Beaches in Pangasinan

Pangasinan is a province located on the shorelines of Luzon. Being located here has made Pangasinan one of the leading suppliers of rice, root crops, and fish within the Philippines, especially the countrys national fish, the Milkfish. But aside from agriculture and fishing, Pangasinan also has its other perks, and, since its on the shorelines, its pretty obvious what those perks arethats right, beaches!

Beaches here attract both local and foreign tourists all year-round, and since their naturally (and not man-made) there, theres no entrance fee or whatsoever needed. Just bring your stuff, find a good spot, and youre solved.

Whether its Christmas, Summer, or just Labor Day, you may spend your time in the following best beaches in the province:

Patar White Beach by Jaya via Flickr

Travel southwest from Bolinaos town proper and come see the famous white-sanded Patar Beach, or the so-called Boracay of the North. Spending time here is not a problem, for you may choose to rent the cottages/nipa huts that are quite far from the coasts, or you may simply find a nice spot and lay out a large cloth, sit directly on the sand, and have your own perfect view of the sea. Sea urchins and puffer fishes, which are expensive delicacies in Japan, are cheap here, since theres an abundant amount of those in here. Scattered amongst the sands are rock formations and coves, and just nearby is the famous Bolinao Lighthouse.

Hundred Islands

Alaminos City of Pangasinan boasts its Hundred Islands, that is a tourist attraction and at the same time a preserved sanctuary. The tourist destination got its name from the number of islands, totaling to 124 during low tide. To get here, you have to travel to the ports and ride a boat for up to 45 minutes at most. You may also talk to the boat driver so you could also go island hopping while on the way to one of the islets. There are very few islands which have been developed for tourism, and the rest, such as the islet with a rock formation resembling the Virgin Mary, are being protected by the local government.

If you prefer a more calm vacation on the beach, then Cabongaoan Beach should be on the top of your list. Its relatively less developed compared to most beaches in Pangasinan, and the ride from the town proper to here isnt short. Still, once you get here, it will be all worth it. Its white sand and long shores make it the perfect beach for snorkeling, jogging, or just, unwinding.

Moon's Phases Are a Lunar Delight for Stargazers

If you have recently received a telescope as a holiday gift, it is likely that your very first target will be our nearest neighbor in space: the moon.

When is the best time to observe the moon with a telescope? Most astronomy neophytes might say it is when it's at full phase, but that's probably the worst time to look at it! When the moon is full it tends to be dazzlingly bright as well as flat and one-dimensional in appearance.

In contrast, the interval when the moon is at or just past first quarter phase, or at or just before last quarter phase, is when we get the best views of the lunar landscape right along the sunrise-sunset line or terminator. The terminator can also be defined as that variable line between the illuminated portion and the part of the moon in shadow.

Along with the fact that a half moon offers more viewing comfort to the eye as opposed to a full moon, using a telescope with just small optical power (magnifications of 20- to 40-power), or even with good binoculars, we can then see a wealth of detail on its surface. Around those times when the moon is half-lit or gibbous phase, those features lying close to the terminator stand out in sharp, clear relief. [The Moon: 10 Surprising Lunar Facts]

In contrast to a half moon, a full moonis almost completely illuminated, especially right around its center; the sun shines straight down even into all the microscopic crevices and except for perhaps around its immediate edges, you will find no visible shadows at all.

The moon will arrive at last quarter phase on Thursday, Feb 11, at 10:50 p.m. EST (0350 Feb. 12 GMT). That will be the moment when the moon's disk is exactly 50-percent illuminated. Lunar mountains will be visible as the sun lights them from the right.

How does a last quarter moon's brightness compare with a full moon? You might think it would be half as bright as a full moon, but in reality astronomers tell us that the last quarter (or first quarter) moon is only 1/11th as bright as full. This is due to the fact that, a half moon is heavily shadowed, even on its illuminated half. And believe or not, it isn't until just 2.4 days before full that the moon actually becomes half as bright as full!

Finally, have you ever noticed that when artists portray the moon, they invariably seem to show it as either a slender crescent or full?

Half-moons are shown far less frequently, while gibbous moons are rarely depicted at all. The word gibbous is derived from the Latin word "gibbus" meaning, "hump." An unusual word to be sure, but in describing the moon between half and full, it's the correct term.

Yet interestingly, the gibbous moon, the phase of the moon that we are now seeing in our current evening sky is the most-seen phase. It occurs for the half month between first and last quarter (although for many it looks "full" for two or even three nights around the time of full moon).

Optical technologies for the observation of low Earth orbit objects

Daniel Hampf, Paul Wagner, Wolfgang Riede

(Submitted on 23 Jan 2015)

In order to avoid collisions with space debris, the near Earth orbit must be continuously scanned by either ground- or spaced-based facilities. For the low Earth orbit, radar telescopes are the workhorse for this task, especially due to their continuous availability. However, optical observation methods can deliver complementary information, especially towards high accuracy measurements. Passive-optical observations are inexpensive and can yield very precise information about the apparent position of the object in the sky via comparison with background stars. However, the object's distance from the observer is not readily accessible, which constitutes a major drawback of this approach for the precise calculation of the orbital elements. Two experimental methods have been devised to overcome this problem: Using two observatories a few kilometres apart, strictly simultaneous observations of the same object yield an accurate, instantaneous 3D position determination through measurement of the parallax. If only one observatory is available, a pulsed laser can be used in addition to the passive-optical channel to measure the distance to the object, in a similar fashion as used by the satellite laser ranging community. However, compared to conventional laser ranging, a stronger laser and more elaborate tracking algorithms are necessary. The two approaches can also be combined by illuminating the object with a pulsed laser from one observatory and measuring the return times at both observatories. These techniques are explored by German Aerospace Center in Stuttgart using its orbital debris research observatory, in cooperation with the Satellite Laser Ranging station in Graz and the Geodetic Observatory in Wettzell. This contribution will present some of the results and plans for further measurement campaigns.
