Tampa stem cell clinic is long on promises, not evidence

TAMPA Dr. Burton Feinerman has spent more than a decade using stem cell therapies that are banned in the United States, sending desperate families to Peru seeking treatments for their babies' terminal conditions like Tay-Sachs disease.

The therapies are costly and unproven, and no insurer will cover them. But there is no law against a U.S. doctor recommending them, as long as they aren't performed here.

Now the 85-year-old pediatrician is focusing on a stem cell therapy he can perform in Tampa, for seniors with such incurable lung conditions as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.

Feinerman, medical director of the Tampa-based Lung Institute, says lung patients tend to get the most benefit from stem cell therapies. And he can treat them in the United States because he is re-infusing patients with their own stem cells, a legal process under certain circumstances.

But it's not approved as a lung disease therapy in this country. Neither the American Lung Association nor the International Society for Stem Cell Research have endorsed it. Medicare won't cover it.

So Feinerman's patients must pay cash between $7,500 and $12,000 for a three-day treatment, plus $4,500 for additional "boosters'' of cells extracted from their blood or abdominal fat.

The Lung Institute has produced a slick website and an advertising campaign, and it puts on seminars at which prospects can hear the testimonials of satisfied patients.

But there are no clinical data showing stem cell therapies benefit patients with lung disease, said Dr. Daniel Weiss, a professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and a leading lung disease researcher. Further, studies of mice suggest that if the therapies work, it likely would help only acute lung conditions like respiratory distress syndrome, not chronic conditions like COPD.

"I do not recommend any type of cell therapy (for lung disease) at this point," Weiss said.

Feinerman insists the doubters are wrong. "Just go to Google," he told a Times reporter who asked him for clinical research to back his claims. Lung Institute employees later provided citations for three journal articles, but none showed the treatments worked. In fact, Weiss wrote two of the articles.

Monkeys and the Chair: Josiahs Story honors the life and influence of Josiah Peacock, a charismatic young man born with severe cerebral palsy not that he ever let that slow him down.

His mother, Renee Oppenheim Peacock, of Grand Junction, wrote Josiahs story in essay form, weaving in stories of their big, extended, four-generation family including children born to them, adopted by them and in their foster care.

Laurena Mayne Davis: How did you decide on the title Monkeys and the Chair?

Renee Oppenheim Peacock: My husband and I have always referred to our kiddos as the monkeys. One night we were sitting at the dinner table discussing possible titles when he said, A Bunch of Monkeys and a Wheelchair.That was a tad awkward, so we shortened it to Monkeys and the Chair: Josiahs Story, and it stuck.

Davis: Why was it important for you to tell Josiahs story?

Peacock: When Josiah became ill I started to write about him. I realized that his life was exceptional and his spirit needed to be captured. I knew, deep in my heart, that I had to share this amazing and intelligent child with the world. Not only because he was such a character, but because he defied the odds and took away all of my excuses to be mediocre. He lived in a crippled, limited body yet he was the happiest person I knew. Anyone lucky enough to have met him would agree that he changed peoples lives for the good.To not share his life would have been criminal!

Davis: Why is it important to you to include Scripture with Josiahs story?

Peacock: Josiah was a very spiritual child, so writing about him without using the Bible would make about as much sense as putting lipstick on a moose. Even though he could not control his own body, he would raise his hands in worship and pray for his brothers and sisters. He was a voice of reason, an encourager and a leader even from his wheelchair.He was intimate with God in ways that I can only hope to emulate.

Davis: I imagine readers will, like I did, marvel at your ability to care for so many children, many with special needs. How did you maintain your energy and positive attitude?

When more than 100 million people on Earth tune in for the Super Bowl kick-off this Sunday, NASA's astronauts in space will probably be sleeping.

But two the American astronauts living and working on the International Space Station are football fans, and at least one of them says he hopes to wake up in time to see the end of theSuper Bowlmatchup between the New England Patriots or the Seattle Seahawks.

"Regrettably, our bedtime, or at least my bed time is quite early," the station's commander, NASA astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore,said in an interview with reporters earlier this week. "But I am an early riser I look forward to at least watching the end and seeing the outcome. And I might throw something on the grill just for myself as well." "Grilling" for Wilmore probably means heating up somefreeze-dried or thermostabilized packaged food with warm water. There are no microwaves or ovens on the space station, and definitely no grills.Open flames aren't allowedinside the orbiting lab.

It's not possible for the astronauts to live on a typical day-night cycle. Their orbiting home circles Earth every 90 minutes, and they might witness up to 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. They live on Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, and the 6:30 p.m. EST kick-off time actually occurs about two hours after the start of their bedtime, said NASA spokesman Dan Huot. If astronauts are awake, the game will be uplinked to them live.

"Not clear on who they will be rooting for," Huot said in an email. "Wilmore is from Tennessee and a big Titans fan and Virts has been wearing his Texans gear lately."

Virts posted a picture of himself on Twitter last week sporting a J.J. Watt Houston Texans shirt while looking down at Earth from the space station's cupola. The Texans didn't make it to the playoffs this year. Nonetheless, Virts wrote that Watt is "the best football player on Earth."

Wilmore isn't just a football fan; he's also a former college football star. He was a linebacker for Tennessee Tech's Golden Eagles. With 143 tackles, he ranks third on the team's all-time tackles list, and he was inducted into the school's "Sports Hall of Fame" in 2003.

Virts joked during this week's interview that it's "probably safe to say" that Wilmore is the best football player in space. But Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, of the European Space Agency, "is the greatest European football player, as we call soccer, on the station."

Wilmore, Virts and Cristoforetti are currently living on the$100-billion space stationwith three Russian cosmonauts, Elena Serova, Alexander Samoukutyaevand Anton Shkaplerov. Wilmore, Serova and Samoukutyaev are scheduled to come back to Earth in March. They'll be replaced by the next three crewmembers as part of a rotating system of that has kept the space station continuously occupied since 2000.

Ryan Lee was fighting the flu, but he wasnt going to let the illness keep him from his mission.

His assignment, along with his Lower Columbia College teammates, was to beat South Puget Sound and get mens basketball coach Jim Roffler his 500th career victory.

Lee posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Michael Dupree had a game-high 22 points as the Red Devils claimed a 72-69 win in NWAC Western Division play in newly-renovated Myklebust Gymnasium on Saturday.

The victory, the fourth straight for the 10th-ranked Red Devils, moved them to 7-2 in league and 15-7 overall. It capped a busy night that included christening the new gymnasium and fitness center and the halftime introduction of the newest inductees into the LCC Athletic Hall of Fame.

Fittingly, like many of Rofflers other 499 triumphs, his milestone win was what he referred to as a grinder.

It was a classic grinder like weve had through the years, Roffler said. The guys didnt quit, were very coachable and found ways to make plays and get it done. There was a real calmness along with a toughness to our approach down the stretch.

The Devils, who trailed 39-32 at halftime, used consecutive 3-pointers from Jamie Ford along with free throws from Lee and Dupree to grab a 58-57 advantage their first lead of the game with 7:12 left.

We had a bad start to the game and went back to doing things weve tried to get away from, Roffler said. Its difficult to coach at this level with so many new faces each year that theyre having to learn on the job. Were still a work in progress.

LCCs lead lasted 14 seconds until DeRon Kyle drilled a 3 from the left corner for a 60-58 Clippers lead.

At this point we tried to manage the game and get everyone on the same page, Roffler said. We wanted to be most solid at this phase of the game.
