accretion disk A relatively flat sheet of gas and dust surrounding a newborn star, a black hole, or any massive object growing in size by attracting material.

active galactic nuclei (AGN) A class of galaxies which spew massive amounts of energy from their centers, far more than ordinary galaxies. Many astronomers believe supermassive black holes may lie at the center of these galaxies and power their explosive energy output.

angular momentum A quantity obtained by multiplying the mass of an orbiting body by its velocity and the radius of its orbit. According to the conservation laws of physics, the angular momentum of any orbiting body must remain constant at all points in the orbit, i.e., it cannot be created or destroyed. If the orbit is elliptical the radius will vary. Since the mass is constant, the velocity changes. Thus planets in elliptical orbits travel faster at perihelion and more slowly at aphelion. A spinning body also possesses spin angular momentum.

apastron The point of greatest separation between two stars which are in orbit around each other. See binary stars. Opposite of periastron.

aphelion The point in its orbit where a planet is farthest from the Sun. Opposite of perihelion.

apoapsis The point in an orbit when the two objects are farthest apart. Special names are given to this orbital point for commonly used systems: see apastron, aphelion, and apogee.

apogee The point in its orbit where an Earth satellite is farthest from the Earth. Opposite of perigee.

The aerospace industry of the United Kingdom is the second- or third-largest national aerospace industry in the world, depending upon the method of measurement.[1][2] The industry employs around 113,000 people directly and around 276,000 indirectly and has an annual turnover of around 20 billion.[1][3]

Domestic companies with a large presence in the British aerospace industry include BAE Systems (the world's third-largest defence contractor),[4][5]Britten-Norman, Cobham, GKN, Meggitt, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce (the world's second-largest aircraft engine maker)[6] and Ultra Electronics. Current unmanned aerial vehicles in which the British aerospace industry has a major role include the BAE Taranis, Barnard Microsystems InView UAV, QinetiQ Zephyr and Watchkeeper WK450.

The British aerospace industry has made many important contributions to the history of aircraft, and was solely or jointly responsible for the development and production of the first aircraft with an enclosed cabin (the Avro Type F), the first jet aircraft to enter service for the Allies in the Second World War (the Gloster Meteor),[8] the first commercial jet airliner to enter service (the de Havilland Comet),[9] the first aircraft capable of supercruise (the English Electric Lightning),[10] the first supersonic commercial jet airliner to enter service (the Arospatiale-BAC Concorde),[11] the first fixed-wing V/STOL combat aircraft to enter service (the Hawker Siddeley Harrier),[12] the first twin-engined widebody commercial jet airliner (the Airbus A300),[13] the first fly-by-wire commercial aircraft (the Airbus A320)[14] and the largest commercial aircraft to enter service to date (the Airbus A380).[15]

AgustaWestland is an international helicopter manufacturer owned by Finmeccanica of Italy. In the United Kingdom, the company has one factory in Yeovil, employing more than 4,000 people.[49] Its main products with a large British content are the EH101, the Super and Future Lynx and the AW139 and AW149.

Airbus (a subsidiary of EADS) directly employs around 13,000 people at its UK division Airbus UK, with estimates that it supports another 140,000 jobs in the wider UK economy.[50][51] The traditional UK workshare in Airbus aircraft is around 20%.[52] Airbus has major sites at Filton in the city of Bristol and at Broughton in north Wales.[50] Filton is the main research and development and support centre for all Airbus wings, fuel systems and landing gear integration.[53] Broughton, which employs over 5,000 people, is the main wing manufacturing centre for all Airbus aircraft and also builds the fuselage and wings of the Hawker 800.[51][53] Since 2006 Airbus has also had a small development centre in the Midlands.[54]

Astrium (a subsidiary of EADS) is the largest space company in Europe and employs around 2,700 people in the UK.[55] It has sites at Stevenage (1,200 employees), Portsmouth (1,400 employees) and Poynton (120 employees).[56][57][58]

The UK-headquartered BAE Systems is the world's second-largest defence contractor and it employs around 36,400 people in the UK.[4][5] The largest aerospace related locations of BAE Systems are Warton, Samlesbury and Brough. The final assembly line for the British Eurofighter Typhoons, a collaborative European programme, is located at Warton. All flight test activity for manned aircraft is undertaken from Warton, which is also the development centre within BAE Systems, for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), UCAVs and the Saudi Tornado upgrade programme. Samlesbury is the production hub of the Military Air Solutions division of BAE Systems. Here, components for the Eurofighter Typhoon, the F35 Lightning II, the Hawk, UAVs, UCAVs and Airbus aircraft get built. At Brough, the BAE Hawk gets produced and final assembled, flight tests are done at Warton. Overall, Military Air Solution has 14,000 employees spread across eight sites in the United Kingdom.[59]

The Britten-Norman Group is a small company with about 100 employees. It is best known for its design of rugged transport aircraft, such as the Islander,[60] Trislander and Defender 4000. To reduce costs, the company (resident on the Isle of Wight) did not perform manufacture of the airframes, but instead outsourced this to Romania. However, it has now moved production of all aircraft back to Daedalus Airfield and also performs in the European hub for the Cirrus SR20 and SR22 final assembly and delivery.[61]

The Canadian company, Bombardier, employs about 5,000 people in its aerospace division in the UK. It can trace its roots back to Shorts Brothers in Northern Ireland. The company has significant workshares in most Bombardier aircraft with its specialities being fuselages and nacelles.

Aerospace Education Program Launches National Initiative

Louisville, Kentucky: Air+Space Academy, America's leading provider of aerospace educational programs for students in grades 9-12, is launching the national expansion of its program and is now offering its program to high schools across the country. The program is nationally recognized as one of the most effective tools for teaching skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and producing career and college ready graduates.

On February 10th, 2015 members of the AOPA executive team and the mayor's staff will join the board, staff, teachers and students of the program will hold a ceremony to officially kick off and celebrate this nationwide initiative. Also speaking at the event will be Dr. Suzanne Smith from NASA Kentucky/UK College of Engineering and Dr. Ben Malphrus, the director of Morehead State University's Space Science Center. The event will be held in the program's new headquarters facility located in Hangar 7 on historic Bowman Field.

The program was first established in 2010 as the Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education and based out of Frankfort High School by educator Dr. Tim Smith. Over the next 5 years, the program grew and expanded to include more than 30 schools in Kentucky and Tennessee. Presence at national-level events such as the EAA's AirVenture Festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin lead to requests to expand the program beyond the region. After an intensive planning process and the acquisition of their new headquarters facility, the Institute board decided it was time to offer the program to schools on a national level. The program has been renamed Air+Space Academy in recognition of an expanded space sciences curriculum, and the parent organization renamed the National Air+Space Education Institute to reflect is mission and new scope.

"We are very excited to open up this program to schools all across the country", said Tim Smith, founder and executive director of the program. "We are doing this in response to demand and requests we have received from all over in the last few years. Now we are organized to make that happen. We can help any school have a successful aviation and aerospace program with minimal investment and resources."

. The Air+Space Academy program is a four-year program for students in grades 9-12. The program delivers content on-line with on-site facilitators for support.

. The program offers pathways in aviation, mechanics and manufacturing, aerospace science and engineering, and unmanned aerial systems,

. Its signature program is the Wing Design Competition, held annually and sponsored by NASA, where students design, build, and fly a wing to perform specific flight capabilities.

Air+Space Academy is establishing the national headquarters for the program in the Hangar 7 complex at historic Bowman Field. The program, designed for students in grades 9-12, was first established in 2010 by educator Dr. Tim Smith as the Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education and based out of Frankfort. Over the next 5 years, the program grew and expanded to include more than 30 schools in Kentucky and Tennessee. As the program continued to grow, the need arose for a permanent headquarters to house the program staff, educational and training activities, and aircraft that have been donated to the program.

"We are thrilled with the Hangar 7 property and location," said Dr. Tim Smith, Executive Director of the program. The location is highly visible and accessible, there is room to grow, and right out our back door we have access to one of the premier general aviation facilities in America. We are excited to bring our program here and to bring new life, energy, and activity to Bowman Field and to the Louisville community. We owe a big thanks to LRAA for making this possible."

Hangar 7, which was originally housed an Army Reserve Aviation unit, has been empty for a number of years. The structure, which can be accessed from Cannons Lane, has a combination of outdoor, office, and hangar space. While facility is in need of a major renovation, the program is making minor improvements and will operate from the facility while contributions are raised to do a complete makeover and create a 21st century aerospace education facility. It is anticipated that this process will be complete in the next two years.

Originally a regional project, the Air+Space Academy is now offering it program to schools across the country. Hubble Telescope Captures Images of Rare Jupiter Triple-Moon

The Hubble space telescope captured three of Jupiter's largest moons in transit at the same time across the banded face of the planet.

The sharp photos released today by NASA were taken on January 24 with the Hubble telescope. They show three of Jupiter's biggest moons, Europa, Callisto and Io, moving together across the face of the gas-giant planet.

The three moons are known as Galilean moons since they were discovered by the scientist during the 17th century. With orbits ranging from two to 17 days, it's common for at least one of the moons to be seen orbiting the Jupiter. However, the convergence of the three is an occurrence so rare that NASA said it happens only once or twice per decade.

The fourth Galilean moon, Ganymede, was outside the Hubble's view and was not part of the celestial sight.

Of Jupiter's moons, the most interest has centered around Europa, which is thought to have elements that could make it hospitable to multi-cellular life.

Getting a closer look could soon be a reality. The $18.5 billion NASA budget recently proposed by the White House for next year includes money earmarked "for Planetary Science including formulation of a mission to Jupiters moon Europa."

Under its icy shell, Europa is believed to have an interior ocean that could perhaps be 10 times deeper than those on Earth, and include two to three times the volume of all liquid water on our planet.

Wow! Hubble Telescope Sees Rare 3-Moon Shadow Dance on Jupiter

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured three of Jupiter's moons marching across the huge planet's disc, a stunning sight that happens only once or twice every 10 years.

The rare triple-moon conjunction on Jupiter, which Hubble witnessed on Jan. 24, involved Io, Callisto and Europa three of the gas giant's four Galilean moons (so named because they were discovered by astronomer Galileo Galilei in the early 17th century).

"The moons in these photos have distinctive colors. The ancient, cratered surface of Callisto is brownish; the smooth icy surface of Europa is yellow-white; and the volcanic, sulfur-dioxide surface of Io is orange," representatives of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, which operates Hubble, wrote in a statement today (Feb. 5). "The apparent 'fuzziness' of some of the shadows depends on the moons' distances from Jupiter," they added. "The farther away a moon is from the planet, the softer the shadow, because the shadow is more spread out across the disk."

The conjunction lasted about 42 minutes. The fourth Galilean moon, Ganymede, was outside Hubble's field of view during the triple transit, STScI representatives said.

Volcanic Io is the innermost of the Galilean moons, completing one lap around Jupiter every 1.8 days. Europa, Ganymede and Callisto have orbital periods of 3.6, 7.2 and 16.7 days, respectively.

With a diameter of 3,270 miles (5,260 kilometers), Ganymede is the largest natural satellite in the solar system. Indeed, it's bigger than the planet Mercury.

Europa is the smallest Galilean moon, at 1,900 miles (3,100 km) wide, but it generates excitement and intrigue disproportionate to its size. The satellite harbors an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy shell, and this ocean is thought to be in contact with Europa's rocky mantle, making possible all kinds of interesting chemical reactions.

Indeed, many scientists regard Europa as the solar system's best bet to host alien life. NASA is mapping out a robotic mission to Europa, which agency officials say should be ready to launch by the mid-2020s.
