Bitcoin Group runs afoul of ASIC over social media

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has issued a gag order to Melbourne-headquartered Bitcoin Group Limited ahead of the company's prospective initial public offering.

The corporate watchdog on Friday announced it had issued a stop order to prevent the company making public statements about an IPO on the ASX until it lodges a prospectus.

"ASICs concerns relate to publications posted by the company via a social media application 'Wechat' seeking expressions of interest from potential investors to subscribe for shares if there is a proposed listing on the Australian Securities Exchange," an ASIC statement said.

"The publications were made before Bitcoin Group Limited was registered as an Australian company by ASIC and before the lodgement of a formal disclosure document (e.g. a prospectus). ASICs understanding is that the company particularly targeted potential investors from the Chinese community."

ASIC described Bitcoin Group Limited as a Bitcoin miner. The company's website says it offers educational services and works "with a number of retail exchanges and OTC traders to provide procurement services, providing emergency liquidity when a larger than expected buy or sell order is beyond their capacity to service."

"ASIC will often review pre-prospectus advertising or publicity to ensure legal requirements are being met," ASIC Commissioner John Price said in a statement.

"This is because any statements made about a potential offer may influence the investment decisions of consumers who will not have the benefit of all material information that would be included in a prospectus.

"ASIC expects companies to be fully aware of their obligations regarding advertising or publicity that occurs before making a regulated disclosure document available to investors. If they do not observe these requirements, then ASIC will take necessary action so that investment decisions are made in a confident and fully informed environment."

ASIC said that normally a stop order would be published on its website and in fundraising documents lodged with it. However in this case ASIC issued a public media statement because no documents have been lodged with it yet.

SAR should prohibit Bitcoin transactions

Updated: 2015-02-16 07:29 By Eddy Li(HK Edition)

Last year, when Hong Kong set up its first Bitcoin ATM and a Bitcoin retail store, I wrote a commentary in this paper, "Treat Bitcoin with caution". This was to warn investors to exercise caution about investing in Bitcoin. Unfortunately, it didn't prevent a recent fraudulent incident. Earlier this month, Legislative Council member Leung Yiu-chung said that about 30 concerned clients of MyCoin, a Hong Kong-based Bitcoin trading company, complained to him that the company had absconded with funds from up to 3,000 investors, stealing HK$3 billion in the process.

The most controversial feature of Bitcoin remains the question of whether or not it is actually a currency. Bitcoin does have three useful qualities of a currency, according to an Economist article published in January 2015: They are "hard to earn, limited in supply, and easy to verify". While Bitcoin, to some extent, meets all these requirements - a store of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account, it is its volatility which becomes the most crucial factor in its acceptance. In this case, naturally, its price, or exchange rate, fluctuates based on how it is regarded. Thus if a country forbids Bitcoin transactions, the price drops dramatically. When another economy admits its legal status its price may skyrocket in a short time.

Consensus has yet to be reached as to whether Bitcoin should be a currency in different countries. As of 2014, this cryptocurrency was only illegal in Vietnam and Iceland. In December 2013, China's central bank took its first steps in regulating Bitcoins by prohibiting financial institutions from handling Bitcoin transactions. Within six months of this, the People's Bank of China stated that Bitcoins "are fundamentally not a currency but an investment target", and simultaneously ordered financial institutions to close Bitcoin trading accounts. As for Japan, it was not until the Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy that the Japanese government decided to clarify its position on the digital currency. Tokyo said it did not consider Bitcoin a real currency. In other Asian countries, including South Korea, India, Thailand and Indonesia, attitudes toward Bitcoin are generally conservative: They firmly state that it is not a currency.

Nevertheless, the Western world seems to have different attitudes to Bitcoin. Germany and Canada have granted Bitcoin the legal status of a currency, while others have tended not to take a definite position. In the US, experts are working on drafting regulations to cover Bitcoin, but on one occasion the Federal Reserve suggested that people should take responsibility for their own risk when investing in this "convertible decentralized virtual currency".

It is possible that Bitcoin will be an internationally accepted currency in future. But so far it is merely an online payment system generated from "mining" - a computing process. Without any central bank or governmental backing, its value is determined only by the agreement of its users. This makes Bitcoin different from conventional currencies regarding undulation. Since its first real-world transaction in 2010, when a user bought 2 pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoins (valued at less than $0.01), it has peaked at $1250 with intermittent crashes and rebounds. Over the last year, the value of Bitcoin has dropped more than 50 percent.

Such instability has brought it to the attention of both investors and governments. Authorities in Hong Kong have repeatedly warned that Bitcoins are a high-risk investment. But judging from the recent case, such warnings are definitely not sufficient, especially when there are no existing laws regulating virtual currencies like Bitcoin. So the solution is regulation or prohibition.

Given that Bitcoin is an unprecedented financial concept, related regulation needs years to draft and refine. Governments and academics from different countries should work together to set up a generally accepted system of regulation. Until such time I suggest the Hong Kong government prohibits Bitcoin transactions through financial institutions - although individual investments should still be possible.

Comets Can't Tame 'Dogs Offense in 7-5 Loss

February 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets A wild twelve goal game did not go the Utica Comets way as the Hamilton Bulldogs won 7-5 Monday afternoon at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, ON. 12 different players scored goals during the contest.

Will Acton (1-1-2), Darren Archibald (1-1-2), Dustin Jeffrey (1-1-2), and Alexandre Grenier (0-2-2) all enjoyed two-point games for the Comets. Travis Ehrhardt (1-0-1) and Bobby Sanguinetti (1-0-1) recorded goals for Utica.

It did not take long for the Bulldogs to stake an early lead. Just 1:27 into the game rookie Daniel Carr netted his 15th goal of the year. The play started deep in the Comets zone. From the corner, Sven Andrighetto connected on a pass to Bryan Allen at the top of the circle. Joacim Eriksson had an answer for Allen's blast, but the rebound found Carr's stick who slipped it past the sprawled out goaltender for the early 'Dogs lead.

The Comets tied it up just under ten minutes later. Darren Archibald dug the puck out from a scrum along the boards and passed it to a streaking Grenier. Grenier fired a shot on goal that was denied by Condon, but Acton was there to bury the rebound into the back of the net, and tie the game at one.

The tie did not last long as the Bulldogs got the lead back for good exactly thirty seconds later. A turnover on the breakout led to a two-on-one for the Bulldogs. Eriksson fended off Hamilton's first attempt, and directed the rebound to behind the net. Gabriel Dumont quickly collected the puck and passed it behind the net to Jake Dowell, who quickly fed the puck to Nick Sorkin in the slot. A quick flick of the wrist later, and the Bulldogs led 2-1.

A little over four minutes into the second period the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1. Connor Crisp curled across the faceoff dot and slipped a backhand pass to Sahir Gill who was positioned on the goal line to Eriksson's short side. Gill took a quick step in and flipped a backhand over Eriksson's glove for the goal. Dumont picked up a secondary assist on the goal.

The scoring madness continued 57 seconds later when Darren Archibald scored his seventh of the season. The Comets broke into the Bulldogs zone on three-on-two. Acton curled up along the hashmarks which drew a defenseman towards him. Acton tapped a pass through the defender to a hard charging Archibald who ripped a quick wrist shot over the glove of Condon. Brandon DeFazio recorded an assist on the goal.

Exactly sixty seconds later the Bulldogs had their two-goal lead back, for a short while anyways. Rookie sensation Charles Hudon, from the corner, took a feed from Andrighetto and cut across the goal line. Defenseman Bobby Shea noticed the slot was left unattended and broke in hard. From there he one-timed the pass from Hudon past the left leg pad of Eriksson to re-establish the Bulldogs two-goal lead.

Dustin Jeffrey drew the Comets back to within one 38 seconds later. Alex Grenier won the faceoff back to defenseman Kent Huskins who passed it over to Dustin Jeffrey at the top of the circle. Jeffrey wristed a shot on goal that squeaked through the five-hole of Condon to bring the score to 4-3.

In what seemed like the longest amount of game time in between goals, Bryan Allen regained the Bulldogs two-goal lead. After Kane Lafranchise broke up a two-on-one Bulldogs rush, Andrighetto corralled the puck and connected with Hudon. Hudon found Allen all alone at the point for a slapshot that pinged off the crossbar and across the goal line for a 5-3 Bulldogs lead.

'Dogs Power past Comets 7-5

February 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Hamilton Bulldogs HAMILTON, ONT. - The Hamilton Bulldogs (25-19-6-0) had seven goals from seven different scorers in a 7-5 win over the Utica Comets (29-14-5-1) at FirstOntario Centre on Monday afternoon. The offensive outburst marked the first time the 'Dogs have put up seven markers in a game since Feb. 19, 2012, when they defeated the Rochester Americans 7-3.

Hamilton had multi-point games from forwards Sven Andrighetto (one goal, three assists), Gabriel Dumont (one goal, two assists), Charles Hudon (three assists) and Jake Dowell (two assists), as well as defenceman Bryan Allen (one goal, one assist).

The scoring started just 1:27 into the first period when Bulldogs forward Daniel Carr found a rebound off a point shot by Allen and slid it past Comets netminder Joacim Eriksson. Carr's team co-leading 15th goal of the season was also assisted by Andrighetto.

Utica got on the board at 11:01 of the opening frame when forward Will Acton dangled one past Hamilton goaltender Mike Condon. Forwards Alexandre Grenier and Darren Archibald collected assists.

Just 30 seconds later, 'Dogs forward Nick Sorkin finished off a perfect passing play around the Comets goal with Dowell and Dumont with his sixth goal of the season from the slot to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead, which they held through the end of the first period.

The middle frame saw a seven-goal eruption - four goals by the Bulldogs and three by the Comets - which left the 'Dogs ahead 6-4 after 40 minutes.

For Hamilton, forward Sahir Gill notched his third goal of the season at 4:16, defenceman Bobby Shea tallied his first of the year at 6:13, Allen potted his first of 2014-15 at 8:31 and Andrighetto buried his 11th of the season to cap off Hamilton's second-period offence at 12:24. For Utica, Archibald, forward Dustin Jeffrey and defenceman Bobby Sanguinetti replied in the second stanza. Five of the seven second-period goals came in a 4:15 span before the period was nine minutes old.

Comets defenceman Travis Ehrhardt made it a 6-5 game at 8:11 of the third period, assisted by forwards Alex Friesen and Nicklas Jensen.

Dumont ripped a shorthanded, empty-net goal from the defensive zone for his team co-leading 15th goal of the season with four seconds to go to seal the 7-5 win for Hamilton. Dowell had the only assist.

Condon made 27 saves on 32 shots for the Bulldogs in the win, while Eriksson stopped 15 of 21 shots faced for the Comets in the loss.

Egypt- Defining the meaning of love and spirituality

(MENAFN - Daily News Egypt) "True Love is the pure happiness that's free of any fears. It's about loving for the sake of love itself. Does sun wait for people's actions to decide if it will send them its light or not? Does it think if people on earth deserve its tender or bid? Sun sends us its light under all circumstances because it enjoys shining and it doesn't wait for anything in return, that's what true love is about!"

By these sentences, writer Ahmed Abdel Mageed defines his remarkable understanding of love in his outstanding novel "Eshq". Although he studied Computer Science at Cairo University, he was always drawn to writing giving it the first priority in his life.

In 2013, the 35-year-old writer published his first novel "Tarnemet Salam" ("Hymn of Peace") that was nominated to win Sheikh Zayed Book Award in its 8th session. After two years, He published his second novel "Eshq" ("Passion") to satisfy the needs of his awaiting readers.

In an exclusive interview with Daily News Egypt, Abdel Mageed discussed the controversial ideas in his novels, replied to readers' criticism and accusations and explained how the Egyptian book market has changed dramatically over the past few years.

When did writing start dominating your life? And does it have anything to do with your childhood?

When I was a little child, my parents were so keen to bring all the children magazines that were available in the market at that time and they used to read them for me. That's how my passion for reading and writing started, as I wanted to imitate what I was reading. I used to bring my drawing notebooks and try to copy the drawings and the pictures I found in Mickey and Sameer magazines, Egyptian children's magazines, and tried to make up other different stories on those pictures. When I was a teenager, I used to read the series of "The Five Adventurers", "Ragol Al Mostaheel" and "Malaf El Mostaqbal", which played a crucial role in attaching me to the magical world of writing.

Did you face any problems to publish your first novel "Tarnemet Salam"("Hymn of Peace")? And what are the most popular obstacles the novice writers face when they publish their first novels from your point of view?

I kept sending "Tarnemet Salam" to different publishing houses for many months. Some of them refused to publish it and others ignored me, until I sent a copy to "Non" publishing house that was enthusiastic to publish it. However, I think that the Egyptian book market has changed dramatically over the past few years. In the past, the writer had to wait for many years until he finds a good publisher and unfortunately some writers couldn't get their literary works to light despite the long years of painstaking research. However, after the 25 January Revolution, things became much easier so I can't claim that I faced real obstacles. Many publishing houses decided to adopt and support the young talents. However, I see it as a double edged weapon as some of these houses try sometimes to exploit the young writers, which affects their name in the market afterwards.

In your first novel "Tarnemet Salam" ("Hymn of Peace"), you took readers into a journey in which the main character was searching for the inner psychological peace and satisfaction. So how could you prepare for such novel? And what are the main messages you wanted to convey to your audience?

After long years of reading about spirituality, trying to get into these experiences through meditation and contemplation, I found out that I had huge amount of feelings and thoughts that need to be formulated and phrased in words. I wanted to convey a main message to my beloved audience; I wanted to tell them that we live in a friendly, amiable world that we can ally with, unlike most of people think. I also wanted them to feel capable of taming and exploiting the surrounding world to meet their own needs and interests!
