Bill Haley & The Comets - Rock Around The Clock (Acoustic Cover) - Video
The magical season for the Mason High School boys basketball team was recognized during the Division I sectional tournament draw.
The Comets, 19-0 and ranked second in the state, grabbed the number one seed in the draw Sunday at Lakota West High School.
Mason finished with 868 points in voting by coaches, edging Wilmington (21-1) for the top spot.
Mason took a first-round bye and will open tournament play at 6 p.m. March 4 against the winner of No. 21 Anderson and No. 23 Harrison. A win could set up a rematch with No. 5 La Salle.
Last year, LaSalle ended Masons season in the sectional finals, 65-48.
However, this season has been unlike any other for the Comets in the recent past.
The 19 wins (heading into Fridays Greater Miami Conference showdown vs. Lakota East) is the most for the Comets since joining the Greater Miami Conference in the 2007-2008 season. Mason was 18-4 in 2012.
The Comets have outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points a game (68-42) and have had just one game decided by fewer than 10 points, a 62-60 win over Princeton on Jan. 16.
The Comets have used a balanced attack . Michael Beebe is the lone Mason player in the top five in any category in the GMC. Hes fifth in assists at 3.3 per game.
Mason has seven players averaging at least six points per game, with Cameron Arminio leading the way at 13.1 points per game, followed by Eddie Puisis adds 10.6 per game off the bench. Kyle Lamotte (9.9), Matt King (7.4), Beebe (6.9), Spencer Cline (6.4) and Rodney Hutchinson (6.2). Blake Benjamin also provides key minutes.

February 20, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - Two power-play goals rocketed the Utica Comets over the Toronto Marlies 5-2 Friday evening at The Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Comets have scored two power-play goals in back-to-back games and have won seven of their last nine games.
Alexandre Grenier (1-2-3), Cal O'Reilly (1-1-2), Dustin Jeffrey (1-1-2), Alex Friesen (1-1-2) all helped the Comets win their 31st game of the year with multi-point games, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 of the 30 shots taken on him by the Marlies.
Things began to ramp up towards the end of period once O'Reilly netted the first goal for the Comets. Grenier saw the play unfold before his eyes as he circled around the back of Antoine Bibeau's net. Once Grenier made it to the right circle, the Canadian winger released a quick pass that met O'Reilly just above the center slot. Without giving Bibeau the chance to react, O'Reilly sniped it through Bibeau's right side for the 1-0 lead at 15:02. Nicklas Jensen received the secondary assist on the play.
The Comets waited almost twenty minutes but they scored another one for the two-goal lead at 14:11. It all started with Hunter Shinkaruk who popped off a pass to Jeffrey just before they crossed the blue line. Jeffrey streaked down the left wing and saw Friesen motioning his arm for the pass to the right wing. Jeffrey fed a saucer pass to Friesen who unloaded on the puck to put it straight past Bibeau to make it 2-0.
The third stanza was a bit more eventful for both sides of the ice with a total of five goals combined.
Jeffrey found the Comets third goal of the game and his 17th of the season after a dish to the right dot from Grenier in the opening minute of the third. Bibeau who was on the wrong side of the crease was distracted as the puck slid out to Jeffrey and right back to the open side of the net for the three-goal lead and the power-play goal.
The game wasn't out of reach for the Marlies just yet as they scored two quick ones to make it a one-goal game.
Ryan Rupert found the net for Toronto's first goal as the Comets were trying to kill off a slashing penalty taken by Brendan Gaunce. Rupert received a pass just inside the slot from Connor Brown and buried it past Markstrom's glove to make it 3-1.
Brendan Leipsic, who was just dealt to the Marlies from the Milwaukee Admirals scored in his first game for his new club to shorten the Comets lead to one. The play developed much like their first goal as Leipsic was traveling to the right of the net. He received a pass from Sam Carrick which enabled him to knock the puck past Markstrom's glove side for the second time.
The Comets took back their two-goal lead on yet another power-play attempt at 11:31. Grenier received the a pass at the point from O'Reilly and fired a shot that would not miss the back of the net to give the Comets a 4-2 lea. Jeremie Blain, who was recently called up from the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings, was also credited with his first assist on the season for the Comets fourth goal.

Mills felt right at home Friday night at the Devil's Den in Jacksonville, but the Comets had to hold on late to leave with a victory.
Darious Hall scored 15 points and Cameron Ricks had 14 to lead the Comets past the Red Devils 58-47 in a 5A-Central Conference game.
The Comets (17-5, 10-2) are in second place in the 5A-Central while the Red Devils (18-7, 8-4) are third. Mills has two regular-season games left, against Little Rock Fair on Tuesday and a makeup game against Pulaski Academy on Thursday.
Comets Coach Raymond Cooper said his team settled down after trailing 7-0 early.
"We wanted to win each quarter by one point," Cooper said. "From the fourth quarter on, we just wanted to hold on."
Mills held Jacksonville to 16-of-40 shooting from the floor and limited the Red Devils to 22 points in the first three quarters.
Jacksonville pulled to within 52-38 with 3:24 left and Cooper called a timeout, making a point to tell the Comets about the Red Devils' ability to come back as they have done against other teams.
"They were scoring every time," Cooper said. "We were rushing like we were losing. I'm telling you, in this place, they can score 12 points in a minute. I've seen this happen before. So I said, 'Let's stop this now. Let's get this under control.'"
Mills could finally breathe a little after Hall's layup with 1:28 left that made it 58-44.
"It's hard to win here," Cooper said. "On a night like this where there's ice and snow, it's still packed. Luckily, we were able to get ahead and get the crowd of the game."

Lorena Gaxiola has a dual career interior design and her housewares business. She created the design for this condo at The Waterpoint.
Every sheet, pillow, plate and glass in Lorena Gaxiolas collection of housewares comes with a story and a message.
The duvet with the feathery pattern in shades of stone gray, coral and white? Thats called Buho, or owl in Spanish, and is a stylized version of the wings of an owl, representing wisdom.
The handblown, lime-green Soft Rocks shot glass? Inspired by rocks and water, it is part of the Chakra collection and symbolizes intellect.
Gaxiolas high-end tableware and bedding designs are a fusion of function, art and inspiration she has named Meaningful Objects for the Home. Thats a lot to ask from housewares, but Gaxiola dreams big.
A native of Tijuana, Gaxiola, 40, came to San Diego to attend the Design Institute of San Diego. She wanted to follow her fathers footsteps and become an architect, but he encouraged her to pursue interior design. She graduated from the design school in 1997, but she never quite fit in working for firms.
El Apache bedding designed by Lorena Gaxiola.
Influenced by the no rules culture in Tijuana, her aesthetic leaned toward the adventurous.
I wanted to reach out of the trends, she said. I wanted to design something different. But I felt I was swimming against the stream.
