London Throws Together a Brazen, Exuberant Fashion Week

Leave it toLondon to lovingly exploit an aesthetic.

The quirkiest fashion capital knows how to push atrendas far as possiblethis is why we have the Britsto thank for the birth of the mini-skirt.

This London Fashion Week wasno different. The current 70s craze came through loud and clear, withpunched-up prints, bright florals and a sense of humornot seen in the comparably toned-downNYC collections. Brits also remixed and remastered the50s and 60s with zeal, and even Gareth Pughs menacing all-black collectionhad New Yorks goth obsession almost beat.

As always, London provided a welcomedose ofjoie de vivre, with none of the apologetic restraint so often seen in the department-store-ready New York collections.

On Saturday morning, Emilia Wickstead showed classic 1950s silhouettes, perfect for a woman who is totally modern but still loves a good Hitchcock reference. There were alsoclean pantsuits and red-carpet-ready ball gowns of which Tippi Hedren would approve.

Simone Rocha jolted crowds to attention on Saturday with blown-up rose prints, carpet-like cloaks and even dresses with fur panels down the middle. The eccentric collectionwas united in its exuberant excess.

Providing a quick break from color, Gareth Pugh threwaveritablegoth jamboree (if goths have jamborees) on Saturday night. Known as New Yorkers are for their love of all things black, Mr. Pugh outdid us. There were black feathers, black cloaks, armor-like black chestplates. One model wore a black ballgown and fur hat, perfect for theSuper Sweet Sixteen of a Visigoth warlords daughter. One model was bare-chested, wearing a billowing black skirt and waving a giant red flag like a victorious bride of Dracula.

On Sunday, Preen played with such British classics as cable knits, tartan and lace-up boots, givingthe effect of a technicolor punk-rock garden party. Models sported middle-parted, fluffycurls, like a bad 70s school portrait made chic. The plaids were perfect for your neighborhood Helena Bonham Carter wannabe.

Punk rocks dowager queen, Vivienne Westwood, incorporated every color of her muted ruffians rainbow for her autumn and winter collection. Matchy stripes and plaids, sculptural cloaks and oversize jackets were on offer.

Next, Mary Katrantzou showed a collection that was more 60s than 70sand thank goodness, because not everyone looks model-esque in thelatter decades long, lean lines.Patterns and textures duked it out on shift dresses, collars were pumped up with fur or hardware, and models wore velvet Mary Janes perfect for chasing down cute boys in bands.

The Courage And Ingenuity Of Freedom-Seeking Slaves In America

In the opening of his new book, Gateway To Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad, Eric Foner lays out the inspirational story of Frederick Bailey a young slave in Maryland who teaches himself to read and write; plans to escape slavery by canoe, but gets caught; boards a train wearing seaman's clothes and carrying false papers; and after several unsettling detours and despite the fact that slave catchers are everywhere arrives in the free state of New York.

Detail of an illustration of Henry "Box" Brown at Philadelphia who escaped from Richmond, Va., in a box 3 feet long, 2 1/2 feet deep and 2 feet wide.

Frederick Bailey eventually changes his last name to Douglass, and the rest is anti-slavery history.

'Daunting Odds'

Throughout the book, Foner refers to men and women who defied dangers, and even death, to gain freedom.

"All fugitive slaves faced daunting odds and demonstrated remarkable courage," he writes.

He recounts the stories of Henry "Box" Brown, a slave who shipped himself in a crate from Richmond to Philadelphia; Peter Matthews, a fugitive who traversed 200 miles from Accomac, Va., to Philadelphia and was chased along the way by two men with guns; and Ellen Craft, who disguised herself as a man to escape servitude in Georgia.

Sure, ever-more enlightened lawmakers, anti-slavery forces led by black and white abolitionists and fear stirred by slave-instigated rebellions, as noted by Henry Louis Gates and others, pushed a nation toward emancipation.

But did riveting stories of brave freedom-seekers singly and collectively also eventually move the national political needle toward abolition?

Freedom fighter Mayandi Bharathi dead

Freedom fighter I. Mayandi Bharathi (98), a Gandhian and socialist, passed away here on Tuesday. He was hospitalised after a fall in his house while preparing to go for the Republic Day parade at 3 a.m.

He was one of the very few leaders of his generation to fight for both political and social freedom. Till August 1947, he fought for Indias freedom. Post-independence, he was involved in a relentless struggle against the ruling class, said S. Venkatesan, Sahitya Akademi winner.

Mayandi Bharathi, who had spent 13-years in prison, was a social activist, a powerful writer, an orator and a journalist. Mayandi earned the title, Bharathi, from his colleagues for unwavering passion for Subramania Bharathis songs. As per his recollection in 2007, Mr. Bharathis tryst with the freedom movement began when he was in the middle school. While watching a protest by supporters of the Congress party against a toddy shop near the present Government Hospital from his classroom, he ran out, emptied his bag and used it to supply stones for pelting at policemen.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, he never used his involvement in the freedom movement for personal gains, said Mr. Venkatesan.

The body of Mr. Bharathi will be kept at the CPI (M)s office before being taken for cremation at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Senate Passes Religious Freedom Bill, Critics Call It Religious Discrimination

The so-called "Religious Freedom" legislation takes another step today in the Indiana General Assembly.

The senate approved the bill today on a 40 to 10 party line vote.

The legislation is intended to protect religious business owners who don't want to provide services for same-sex weddings.

Critics however say the measure discriminates gay couples.

The bill now moves to the house.

"We are extremely disappointed that Indianas Senate voted to allow religious discrimination in many areas of life for Indianas families, workers and others. We have seen this over and over - bills that say they are about protecting one thing when the real goal is to target and discriminate against LGBT people, with vast implications for everyone else.

As written, this bill will upend the balance between religious freedom and freedom from imposition of others religious beliefs. Lambda Legal urges the Indiana House to halt this bill before causes damage and legal havoc between neighbors, employee and employer, and landlord and tenant. SB 101 extends religious exercise rights to for-profit companies of all sizes - no matter what goods they make or services they sell, they're treated much like churches. Freedom of religion is already protected by federal and state law, but this bill goes too far."

Three-parent babies: House of Lords approves law despite fears children could be born sterile

Lord Deben called for a delay and asked peers to form a committee to look at the safety and legality of the procedure.

He warned that children born from the technique could be sterile and argued that the majority of the public did not agree with the procedure.

"We have to protect three sets of people, the families, the children and the wider society," he told the House of Lords.

We should be concerned about the children who would be born in these circumstances. There are real doubts about safety.

Former Attorney General Baroness Scotland also said the legislation had been rushed through and argued that neither the current Attorney General Jeremy Wright nor the Lord Chancellor supported the new law.

"This matter is not easy, it's complex. Why the haste?" she added.

Baroness Hollins, chair of the British Medical Association's Science Committee also said she could not support the new legislation while Baroness O'Loan warned that many more egg donors would be needed for the procedure whihc would place women at risk of complications from hyperstimulation.

However Lord Howe said mitochondrial replacement could 'give real hope to families.'

"It would be cruel and perverse to deny them that opportunity for any longer than necessary," he added.

Lord Winston, one of Britain's leading fertility experts, also backed the law.

UK is the first country to legalise triple-DNA babies

The UK has become the first country in the world to legalise the creation of IVF babies using DNA from three people.

The first baby conceived after mitochondrial donation techniques may be born as early as next year after peers in the House of Lords voted against a move to block a planned legislation change by 280 votes to 48, a majority of 232.

Research has shown that mitochondrial donation could potentially help almost 2,500 women of reproductive age in the UK who are at risk of transmitting harmful DNA mutations in the mitochondria.

But opponents, including church leaders and pro-life groups, have warned that the change has been brought about too hastily and marked the start of a slippery slope towards designer babies and eugenics.

Last night the Lords rejected an attempt to delay the legislation by Tory former cabinet minister John Gummer, before voting overwhelmingly in favour of the change to the law after several hours of debate.

The move to amend the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, which forbids IVF treatments that affect inherited germline DNA in eggs and sperm, was carried by some 382 votes to 128 in the Commons earlier this month.

Prime Minister David Cameron, Labour leader Ed Miliband, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg all exercised their free vote to support the decision.

A spokeswoman for the department of health said: ``Parliaments decision will bring hope to hundreds of families affected by mitochondrial disease.

We are proud to be the first country to allow these revolutionary techniques. For the first time ever, women who carry severe mitochondrial disease will have the opportunity to have healthy babies without the fear of passing on devastating genetic disorders.

Need to adopt US system of censorship

Actress-social activist Shabana Azmi, who has slammed the Central Board of Film Certifications decision to refrain from profanity in films, has appealed to give up the British system of censorship and adopt the American one, whereby the filmmakers are liberal about their own films and censorship.CBFC chairperson Pankaj Nihalani has issued a controversial diktat blacklisting offensive words from Indian films. The decision has left many Bollywood celebrities in shock and disagreement and Shabana is one of them. She feels Censor Boards business is to certify and not censor according to appropriate ages. I think it is very important that we discard the British system, which means you appoint a chief and then you have 30 different people who willingly are chosen according to the political dispensation of the day which means every five years you expect the morality of your country to change, Shabana said here Thursday.Instead we should adopt the American system, whereby the filmmakers themselves yield and decide that they dont want a single cut but they realise that age appropriate behaviour is important. If they have a universal exhibition then they voluntarily give cuts, she added. (IANS)
