Supreme Court rejects stem cell patent case

A nine-year legal challenge to human embryonic stem cell patents ended Tuesday, when the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

The decision means the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, or WARF, will get to keep its patent rights for the cells, which were discovered in 1998 by University of Wisconsin - Madison scientist James Thompson.

However, the challengers succeeded in preventing WARF from gaining rights over another important type of stem cells called induced pluripotent stem cells, said Jeanne Loring, a stem cell scientist at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla who was part of a coalition contesting the WARF patents.

IPS cells act much like human embryonic stem cells, and are being researched as an alternative for stem cell therapy. Loring is working with a group that seeks to use them to treat Parkinson's disease.

WARF maintains it has the right to license use of human embryonic stem cells, because Thompson developed the methods to isolate them from embryos, which had not been previously done. Loring said the derivation is an obvious extension of methods used to derive non-primate embryonic stem cells, and therefore not patentable.

Loring and two public interest groups, Consumer Watchdog and the Public Patent Foundation, challenged the patents in 2006, and in 2007 succeeded in narrowing WARF's claims to exclude the IPS cells. Loring and the groups continued the challenge on the grounds that as a product of nature, human embryonic stem cells are not patentable.

The U.S. Patent and Trade Office turned down that challenge, and the case reached the Supreme Court last year. By not hearing the case, the Supreme Court let that decision stand.

"They still own human embryonic stem cells," Loring said. "But the way their patents were originally written, they would have also been able to own IPS cells. If there's one success that I would point to, that was worth all the effort, it's that they can't. And the reason they can't is because we challenged the patent."

Calls and an email sent Tuesday to WARF headquarters in Madison, Wis., were not immediately returned.

Second spacewalk advances space station upgrades

Astronauts Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Terry Virts floated back outside the International Space Station Wednesday for the second of three spacewalks to help ready the lab complex for dockings by commercial crew capsules being built by Boeing and SpaceX.

Floating in the Quest airlock module, Wilmore and Virts switched their spacesuits to battery power at 6:51 a.m. EST (GMT-5) to officially kick off a planned six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk, the second of three outings planned by the Expedition 42 crew.

For identification, station commander Wilmore, call sign EV-1, is wearing a suit with red stripes and will be using helmet camera No. 18. Virts, EV-2, is wearing an unmarked suit and will use helmetcam 20. The mission control communicator, or CAPCOM, for the spacewalk is veteran astronaut Joe Acaba.

During a six-hour 41 minute EVA Saturday, the astronauts laid out eight bundles of cables near the front of the space station that will supply power and data to new docking port mechanisms that will be launched and installed later this year.

During Wednesday's outing, they first removed a protective cover from a docking port extension on the front end of the space station that was once used by visiting space shuttles. The cover turned out to be fairly stiff, but the astronauts managed to stuff it in a stowage bag as planned.

"Hey Joe, please don't ask us how we did it," Virts joked with Acaba.

"I tell you what, I wish I had a video of it," Wilmore said.

"That was the 'stuff your sleeping bag in the bag in the morning' technique," Virts quipped.

The spacewalkers then stowed no-longer-needed shuttle power cables that were disconnected Saturday before installing two final sets of power and data cables needed by the docking mechanisms.

On Sunday night, actress Zendaya turned heads with her waist-length faux locs on the red carpet. It was a dramatically different look for the actress she had a pixie cut earlier that week and, since the red-carpet dreadlock is rare, a banner moment for natural hair styles. Plus, she looked gorgeous. So its surprising that she had to defend her choice on Twitter.

Last night, during E!s Fashion Police Oscars edition show, host Giuliana Rancic commented on Zendayas red-carpet hairdo, saying that her dreadlocks made Zendaya look like she smelled of patchouli oil and weed." Naturally, and rightfully, Twitter erupted in anger, calling Rancic's joke racist, xenophobic, distasteful, and ignorant (and citing Rancics previous praise of Kylie Jenner for rocking dreadlocks as hypocrisy).

Eventually the situation elicited a long, eloquent response from Zendaya herself. Read below:

And yes, Rancics joke probably was unthinking, but its still embarrassing that an 18-year-old has to remind a grown woman and television host why recycling tired stereotypes in this situation discussing a black womans natural hairstyle would be offensive.

Singapore, Canada researchers make longer-lasting lithium battery breakthrough

SINGAPORE: A scientific breakthrough in rechargeable battery technology could result in the doubling of the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used to power smartphones, medical devices and electric vehicles.

The researchers from A*STAR's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) and Quebec's Hydro-Quebec's research institute (IREQ) have synthesised silicate-based nanoboxes that could more than double the capacity compared to conventional phosphate-based cathodes, both institutes said in the joint press release on Wednesday (Feb 25).

IBN researchers have successfully achieved simultaneous control of the phase purity and nanostructure of Li2MnSiO4 for the first time, said Professor Jackie Y Ying, IBN Executive Director. This novel synthetic approach would allow us to move closer to attaining the ultrahigh theoretical capacity of silicate-based cathodes for battery applications.

The five-year research collaboration between IBN and IREQ was established in 2011. The researchers plan to further enhance their new cathode materials to create high-capacity lithium-ion batteries for commercialisation, the press release stated.

SINGAPORE, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- Researchers from Singapore's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) of A*STAR and Quebec's IREQ (Hydro-Quebec's research institute) have synthesised silicate-based nanoboxes that could more than double the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries as compared to conventional phosphate-based cathodes.

This breakthrough could hold the key to longer-lasting rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and mobile devices, a joint statement said.

Commenting on the breakthrough, Professor Jackie Y. Ying, IBN Executive Director said that IBN researchers have successfully achieved simultaneous control of the phase purity and nanostructure of Li2MnSiO4 for the first time

Director Energy Storage and Conservation at Hydro-Quebec, Dr. Karim Zaghib meanwhile said, "IBN's expertise in synthetic chemistry and nanotechnology allows us to explore new synthetic approaches and nanostructure design to achieve complex materials that pave the way for breakthroughs in battery technology, especially regarding transportation electrification."

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used to power many electronic devices, including smart phones, medical devices and electric vehicles.

Its high energy density, excellent durability and lightness make them a popular choice for energy storage.

Due to a growing demand for long-lasting, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for various applications, significant efforts have been devoted to improving the capacity of these batteries.

In particular, there is great interest in developing new compounds that may increase energy storage capacity, stability and lifespan compared to conventional lithium phosphate batteries.

The five-year research collaboration between IBN and Hydro-Quebec was established in 2011.

With the help of Columbia University andBrigham and Womens Hospital in Boston,scientists at Harvard Medical School created what theyre calling nano-sized drones that will be used for medical purposes and eventually biodegrade inside the body.

The report findingspublished last week in Science Translational Medicineexplain that the nanomedicines willdeliver a special type of healing molecule to fat deposits in arteries. This could become a new way to prevent heart attacks caused by atherosclerosis, which kills one in four people in the U.S. and is the countrys leading cause of death, according to a Harvard Med news article.

The inflammation-resolving targeted nanoparticles have shown exciting potential not only for the treatment of atherosclerosis as described here, but also in other therapeutic areas including wound repair,Omid Farokhzad,director of theLaboratory of Nanomedicine and Biomaterials at Brigham and Womens, was reported saying in the Harvard news article.

In fact, it is the wound repair aspect of this technology that makes it so promising. Most scientists are developing drugs thatprevent heart attacks by tamping down inflammation, but years of such a drug regimen has negative side effects and treating inflammation alone isnt enough. Its the healing of the damage to the arterial walls that makes the difference, and that is what the new nanodrones will be addressing.

So far, the nonomedicines have tested successfully in mice. After a little fine-tuning, the scientists will beset tomove on to human testing.

Student Council meets Law School representative

Student Council met in the Law School Tuesday to hear from a representative from the Student Bar Association, as well as members of University Information Technology Services.

Morgan Lingar, incoming SBA president and Law School representative, gave Council an overview of the organizations current concerns and plans for the upcoming year.

I really would like to focus on student self governance in terms of how it applies to a lot of ways over the past year weve seen administrators working unilaterally without consulting law students, Lingar said.

Lingar said there have been issues with administrative control of the Keg, a weekly social event at the Law School.

When we had to get reapproved for this semester, Lingar said. We were told that we were going to have to move it to Fridays with the knowledge that next year there would be no weekly events holding alcohol at all at the Law School.

Lingar said Law School students were frustrated with the reasons for cancelling these events, cited as safety concerns about sexual assault.

A lot of people, myself included, are very concerned that that is our way of addressing sexual assault, Lingar said. Were very frustrated our voices arent heard.

Lingar said when she asked more specifically about reported sexual assaults or any research which might show a higher number of reports on Thursdays due to the association with Law School events, she was told there have been reported assaults, but administrators have not kept specific data or records.

What weve been hearing from the administrators that it is within the philosophy for the administration to make changes without consulting students, Lingar said. For a school that values self-governance, that attitude to me is very disturbing.
