Second Amendment group backs Andover Twp. mans bid to carry gun

By JOE CARLSON

jcarlson@njherald.com

ANDOVER TWP. The Second Amendment Foundation recently announced it was financially backing a township man in his fight against the state's justifiable need law to carry a handgun.

That's actually very important because financially it will allow the case to go all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court if it is allowed to get that far, said Israel Albert Almeida, the suit's namesake.

Almeida said the foundation is fully financing his efforts.

This is part of our ongoing effort to have New Jersey carry laws declared unconstitutional, said Alan Gottlieb, Second Amendment Foundation founder and executive vice president, in a press release. We were drawn to Almeida's case because it provides one more example of how the Garden State's concealed carry law is simply Draconian in the way it is administered.

In New Jersey, when residents apply to either their municipality's police chief or New Jersey State Police, they must specify the urgent necessity for self-protection, as evidenced by specific threats or previous attacks which demonstrate a special danger to the applicant's life that cannot be avoided by means other than an issuance of a permit to carry a handgun.

Almeida was denied by Andover Police Chief Achille Taglialatela, who cited a lack of justifiable need in 2013.

Almeida said his need is that he manages buildings in Essex County, specifically Newark and Irvington, and has been the subject of death threats and an attempted carjacking.

I carry large amounts of cash, and people around there know that, Almeida said. The areas I enter are very high crime. I face that every single day.

Proposed Ammunition Ban Upsets Gun Users

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A proposed ammunition ban from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has local gun enthusiasts upset, saying the ban is a violation of their second amendment rights. The ATF wants to ban 5.56 mm ammunition used is AR-15 rifles and handguns.

The ATF says this ammunition has the power to pierce through a police officer's bulletproof vest. Despite its danger to law enforcement, it's also a popular ammunition among sportsmen and hunters.

"It doesn't really matter what it is right now, if it's 5.56 mm, it's selling quickly," Liberty Arms Manager Colton May said.

Word travels fast, and in the gun business the latest talk is the ATF's proposed ban on ammo for AR-15's.

"What that's done though, is created a scare to where anything that's 5.56 mm is flying off the shelves," May said. "Friday alone we probably sold 6,000 to 7,000 rounds of 2.23 mm or 5.56 mm."

May said his ammo shelf is not only cleared out, but prices are peaking online.

"Ten to 11 bucks, you know, for a box of 20," May said. "Now I've seen it priced for 20 bucks, even higher and that's just a small batch of ammunition."

While the AR-15 has a military and law enforcement background, it's become one of May's most popular sellers. He said sportsmen use it to hunt and it's a frequent choice at the shooting range. Gun Owner Nick Lind is one of many opponents of the ban.

"It's like, well I'm not going to buy the gun if I can get the ammo, so you know, the distributors that have the gun have to raise the price and so it's just cause and effect," Lind said.

Opponents like Lind also argue the proposed ban is a violation of their second amendment rights and after legislation previously failed, it's just another way to stop the use of AR-15's.

Chantilly High student journalists win award celebrating First Amendment

For the editors of the Chantilly High School newspaper, it was deciding to highlight free speech on the cover of the Purple Tide newspaper.

For the staff of the high schools student television newscast, it was a three-minute piece about the demonstrations in Ferguson, Mo., concerning racial tensions between citizens and police. And for the teens who oversee the Chantilly High yearbook, its the independence to edit the Odyssey without meddling by the administration.

Its completely up to us, said Rachel Palmer, 17, a senior and co-editor of the yearbook. Theres no one to say, You cant do that.

Its that kind of authority to publish whatever the students want to that earned the high school journalists the Journalism Education Associations 2015 First Amendment Press Freedom Award. Chantilly was one of seven high schools to receive the honor and the only school in Virginia. The students will accept the award next month at a student journalism convention.

The award comes a year after Chantilly principal Teresa Johnson was named outstanding administrator of the year by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association.

Johnson, who became Chantillys principal in 2011, was honored for supporting an independent student press. Johnson said she has no direct influence on student media and does not review students work before publication. Students described her as a crucial ally because she does not interfere.

Johnson said that her goal is ensuring that faculty advisers teach the students how to be responsible journalists without infringing on their abilities to express themselves.

There is no greater real-life experience for our students than journalism, because they learn to problem-solve, think critically, collaborate, deal with conflict and communicate, Johnson said. I have faith in our students abilities to make decisions and, at times, to learn from their mistakes as well.

Erin Fowler, 18, a senior and co-editor of the Purple Tide, said that one example of editorial independence came when a faculty member said he had been misquoted in an interview with a reporter. But the reporter had recorded the conversation, so editors kept the quote.

We stood our ground, Fowler said. It really modeled our First Amendment rights.

Bulldogs' Six Goals Doom Comets

March 1, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA, N.Y. - It hasn't happened often this season, but after Sunday afternoon's 6-3 loss to the Hamilton Bulldog's at The Utica Memorial Auditorium, the Comets have now lost three in a row.

Darren Archibald (1-0-1), Cal O'Reilly (1-0-1) and Brendan Gaunce (1-0-1) scored the Comets three goals of the night but it wasn't enough as the Comets struggled all night to keep up with the prowess of the Hamilton Bulldogs' offense.

The Comets shot early and often in the opening stanza, which allowed them to open up the scoring just past the eight-minute mark. Andrey Pedan caught Hamilton's defense off guard with a stretch pass up to Brandon DeFazio at the blue line. With the puck along the boards, DeFazio popped it over to Archibald who took a wrist shot and buried it top-shelf on the short side to give the Comets the early one-goal lead.

Just under six minutes later the Bulldogs found the equalizer after a series of tick-toe passes just inside the slot.

Drayson Bowman lifted a quick shot past Joacim Eriksson after receiving a pass from Darren Dietz at the right dot to keep the Comets at bay.

Just past the midway point in the second period, it was the Bulldogs turn to take the one-goal lead after Eriksson made a sprawling attempt to keep the puck out of the net. With mass confusion in the crease, the puck was air-bound as it bounced off some bodies and into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead at 12:27. Eric Tangradi received credit for the goal for his sixth of the season.

As the third period rolled in, so did the goals. The Comets were able to start the period off on the right foot by finding their first equalizer of the game just before the one-minute mark. Alexandre Grenier fed the puck to the blue paint as O'Reilly was there to catch and deliver the puck past the right post to make it 2-2. Nicklas Jensen tallied the secondary assist.

Hamilton bounced back the other way and took control of the lead off a rebound that popped out in front from Bowman at 3:40. Tangradi shifted the curtains as spiked it in the back of the net on the open side for the one-goal lead.

Less than two minutes later, the Comets answered back with a snipe from Gaunce. The rookie's shot went top-shelf over the glove hand of Mike Condon to tie it up at 3-3. Both Peter Andersson and Dustin Jeffrey had their hands in on the play.

The Comets lost control of the game at 7:44 after a turnover in the defensive zone. Morgan Ellis outworked the Comets and fought his way to the puck and beat Eriksson for the 4-3 lead.

Crunch Drop the Comets 4-1

February 28, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Just as it was the last time the Utica Comets visited their thruway rivals, they were once again defeated by the Syracuse Crunch in a 4-1 final at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena on Saturday evening.

Hunter Shinkaruk found the Comets lone goal of the game but was unable to bury anything else past the rock solid Kristers Gudlevskis who backstopped 38 shots of the 39 the Comets took on him.

The first opportunity presented itself for the Crunch early on in the first period after Nicolas Deschamps took a shot on Pat Nagle from the right dot. Unable to cover the rebound, Nagle made an attempt at the sprawling save but it wasn't quick enough to catch the rubber that Tanner Richard banged in on the opposite side for the early 1-0 lead at 6:24.

The Comets didn't hesitate to fight right back after Matthew Corrente took a penalty for interference six minutes later. With the power play ticking down, Jeremie Blain rifled one towards the front of the net from the right boards. Hunter Shinkaruk who planted himself in front of Gudlevskis, caught the puck with his stick, spun around and popped it in on the open side for the equalizer and his second power-play goal of the season. Kent Huskins also received credit on the play.

Upon entering the second period the Crunch took back their one-goal lead after capitalizing on their first power play of the game. Gudlevskis got it all going for the Comets directly off of a clear and popped it back out of the zone up to Vladislav Namestnikov in the neutral zone. Yanni Gourde eventually took possession of the puck and snuck through the Comets defense as he lifted one past Nagle for the 2-1 lead at 7:45.

The goals kept piling on later on in the third as Richard found his second of the game off of a slapshot from Dylan Blujus. Richard tipped the puck in past Nagle at 8:27, which extended their lead to two. Carter Ashton received the secondary assist on the play.

The Crunch found the final goal of the game after Pat Nagle was pulled for the extra attacker. The Comets defensemen did their best to keep the puck out, but the inevitable happened once the Crunch's point-leader, Jonathan Marchessault popped in the empty-net goal off of a feed from Slater Koekkoek to make it 4-1.

It's back to The Utica Memorial Auditorium tomorrow afternoon as the Utica Comets will take on the Hamilton Bulldogs for a 4 p.m. matinee. In their last meeting, the Comets leashed up the dogs with a 5-2 victory at The AUD.

Prior to the game Utica Comets Director of Hockey Operations, Pat Conacher, accounced that the team has reassigned defenseman Kane Lafranchise to the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL.

Three Stars: 1. SYR Kristers Gudlevskis (Win, 38 Saves) 2. SYR Tanner Richard (2 Goals) 3. SYR Kevin Lynch

Computer-navigated knee replacement facility launched

An innovation in joint replacement surgery, computer navigated total knee replacement, has been introduced at Sai Bhaskar Super Specialty Hospitals, Arundelpet.

German joint replacement surgeon Heiko Groichen, who launched the new facility here, said that computer navigated knee replacement would have a 100 per cent precision and accuracy.

With the help of computer, orthopaedic surgeons would be able to determine specific blocks and implant the artificial joints in the knees.

Even as the rate of people preferring joint knee replacement is growing up, Dr. Heiko said that people could still avoid knee pain if they make a consistent effort to lose weight, eat the right nutritional food, opt for physiotherapy whenever needed and follow the advice of doctor.

Obesity and visceral fat

Knee pains are increasingly becoming related to obesity and visceral fat and in European countries, increasing number of men and women above 45 years are opting for hip surgery while in India knee replacement is still a neglected area.

Managing director and orthopaedic surgeon Busireddy Narendra Reddy said that the new computer navigated total knee replacement was the first-of-its kind facility in the State.

Former HoD, Department of Orthopaedics, GGH, Rammohan Rao, said that he had his knees operated upon and added that the recovery was quite good.

'Miracle' stem cell therapy reverses multiple sclerosis

In the new treatment, specialists use a high dose of chemotherapy to knock out the immune system before rebuilding it with stem cells taken from the patients own blood.

Stem cells are so effective because they can become any cell in the body based on their environment.

"Since we started treating patients three years ago, some of the results we have seen have been miraculous," Professor Basil Sharrack, a consultant neurologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, told The Sunday Times.

"This is not a word I would use lightly, but we have seen profound neurological improvements."

During the treatment, the patient's stem cells are harvested and stored. Then doctors use aggressive drugs which are usually given to cancer patients to completely destroy the immune system.

The harvested stem cells are then infused back into the body where they start to grow new red and white blood cells within just two weeks.

Within a month the immune system is back up and running fully and that is when patients begin to notice that they are recovering.

Holly Drewry, 25, of Sheffield, was wheelchair bound after the birth of her daughter Isla, now two.

But she claims the new treatment has transformed her life.

It worked wonders, she said. I remember being in the hospital... after three weeks, I called my mum and said: 'I can stand'. We were all crying.

Howe's recovery shows stem-cell advances

Published: Sunday, 3/1/2015 - Updated: 9 hours ago

BY MARLENEHARRIS-TAYLOR BLADE STAFF WRITER

Hockey legend Gordie Howes star power is raising awareness in the United States and Canada about advances in stem-cell therapies as he continues what is being called a miraculous recovery from a massive stroke.

Those closest to him, including his son, Toledo radiologist Dr. Murray Howe, are convinced the former Detroit Red Wings player would have died if he had not traveled to a medical clinic in Tijuana, Mexico, for an experimental stem-cell treatment not yet available in the United States.

After a debilitating stroke on Oct. 26, Mr. Howe, 86, had a few weeks of slight recovery, but then his health went downhill quickly, said Dr. Howe, director of sports medicine imaging for ProMedica Toledo Hospital. The family had started preparing for his funeral. But that all turned around after he had the adult stem-cell treatment on Dec. 8.

If you saw him now, you wouldnt know he had a stroke, Dr. Howe said.

Its been wonderful. Every day I would say hes a little bit better, and there are little hints of improvement. Certainly in the first month, every day his strength, coordination, and balance were better. He has been eating like a horse. He had lost 20 pounds, and now he has gained back 25 pounds, so he is pretty close to his playing weight now, Dr. Howe said.

Amazing results

In describing his fathers treatment and recovery in the last three months, Dr. Howe does not hesitate to use words such as unbelievable, astonishing, and amazing.

Eight hours after Mr. Howe received what is called a lumbar puncture, where stem cells were injected in the spinal fluid of his lower back by an anesthesiologist, he went from being bedridden and only mumbling short sentences to speaking clearly and walking with assistance, Dr. Howe said.
