A mysterious plume of material reaching high into the Martian atmosphere has scientists buzzing about the Red Planet and they have amateur astronomers to thank for spotting the baffling feature.
Wayne Jaeschke is a patent lawyer by day, but most nights, you can find him in his observatory, pointing a telescope skyward. In March 2012, Jaeschke spotted what looked like a dust cloud popping off the surface of Mars. Two years later, he is a co-author on a scientific paper investigating thenature of the perplexing Mars plumes.
"You know, 999,999,999 times out of a million, when the amateur astronomers see something in an astronomical photo, the professionals have seen it as well, or they have a theory for explaining it," Jaeschke said. "But this is a rare case where no one has been able to explain it." [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]
Jaeschke started observing the sky when he was just a kid. He learned about the cosmos from a family friend who went on to lead the astronomy department at Stanford University. Though he never pursued astronomy as a career, over the years, it grew into a serious hobby.
"About 10 years ago, I started to image the planets on a daily basis," Jaeschke said.
Thanks to the reduced cost of high-quality cameras, data storage, photo editing software and, of course, quality telescopes amateur astronomers like Jaeschke can take high-quality sky images every night, and gradually build up huge volumes of data.
Over the years, Jaeschke has built up an email list of both amateur and professional astronomers who want to hear about his work.
"The more data you produce, the more people get interested particularly professionals, because they can't look at [the planets] all the time," Jaeschke said (even the fleet of orbiting satellites around Mars can't watch every inch of the Red Planet all the time). "So, they turn to the amateur community."
Professional astronomers can use these daily photographs to do things like monitor daily changes in a planet's weather, he said. In some instances, professionals and amateurs collaborate on targeted observations.
On the night of March 19, 2012, Jaeschke was taking images of Mars per his usual routine, when he noticed "a little blob" on the side of the planet. He assumed it was a technical issue perhaps a problem with one of the monitors, or even just a speck of dust on one of the lenses.

Newswise Fairfax, Va., March 4, 2015The International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG) has issued a guideline that outlines the use of 3-D computed tomography (CT)-based radiation therapy planning and volumetric image guidance to more effectively treat pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma and to reduce the radiation dose to normal tissue, thus decreasing the risk of late side effects. The guideline will be published in the March-April issue of Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO), the clinical practice journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
Historically, pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma patients were treated with the same chemotherapy and radiation regimens as adults with Hodgkin lymphoma, which potentially exposes their young, still-growing bodies to more treatment than necessary. Previous radiation therapy guidelines for pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma have focused on 2-D imaging and bony landmarks to define dose volumes for radiation therapy treatment, and treated large volumes of normal tissue in part because of uncertainty about which lymph node areas were involved.
The guideline, Implementation of contemporary radiation therapy planning concepts for pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma: Guidelines from the International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group, describes how to effectively use modern imaging and innovations and advances in radiation therapy planning technology to treat patients with pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma while decreasing the risk of late side effects, including second cancers and heart disease.
The authors describe methods for identifying target volumes for radiation therapy, and how to implement the concept of involved site radiation therapy to define radiation target volumes and limit dose to normal organs at risk. According to the guideline, accurate assessment of the extent and location of disease requires both contrast-enhanced CT as well as fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET). The document describes how the evaluation of response to chemotherapy influences the targeting of the lymphoma and the volume of normal tissue treated, by using recently developed capacity to fuse CT and FDG-PET images taken before and after chemotherapy to CT imaging taken for radiation therapy planning.
The emergence of new imaging technologies, more accurate ways of delivering radiation therapy and more detailed patient selection criteria have made a significant change in our ability to customize treatment for many cancer patients, said David C. Hodgson, MD, associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto in Toronto, a radiation oncologist at Princess Margaret Hospital/University Health Network in Toronto and lead author of the guideline. This guideline has the potential to reduce the radiation therapy breast dose by about 80 percent and the heart dose by about 65 percent for an adolescent girl with Hodgkin lymphoma. This shift in more personalized treatment planning tailored to the individual patients disease will optimize risk-benefit considerations for our patients, and reduce the likelihood that they will suffer late effects from radiation therapy. We are also excited that these guidelines will be utilized in an upcoming Childrens Oncology Group Study of involved-site radiation therapy for high-risk Hodgkin lymphoma patients and eagerly await the studys results.

Stephen Hawking warned it could "spell the end of the human race." In the Terminator movies, it results in the robot apocalypse.
Artificial intelligence has a friend, however, in "Chappie." The film from "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp looks at a world where robots hold the solution to our problems and humans are the villains more specifically, Hugh Jackman, decked out in a ridiculous mullet and short khaki shorts.
"The moment we gave birth to AI, it would be a different planet," Blomkamp told NBC News.
Disease? Eradicated. Poverty? Humans could spend more time thinking and less time working to make ends meet.
"You would have something that has 1,000 times the intelligence that we have, looking at the same problems that we look at," he said. "I think the level of benefit would be immeasurable."
It has been 60 years since computer scientist John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence," which he imagined as "computer programs that can solve problems and achieve goals in the world as well as humans."
In the narrow sense, that has already happened. IBM's Watson proved it could play "Jeopardy!" as well as most contestants. In science fiction, artificial intelligence usually equates to a broader set of skills, the computer equivalent of a human brain.
"Self-awareness means you perceive yourself as being unique," Wolfgang Fink, a roboticist at the University of Arizona, told NBC News. "It's like the Latin saying 'cogito ergo sum' I think, therefore I must be."
He isn't sure someone will ever build a robot that is self-aware, and if they do, he thinks it probably won't be for a very long time.
McCarthy died in 2011, the same year that Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S equipped with Siri. The gulf between Siri and the digital assistant in "Her" (another recent movie about AI) is vast.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) is promoting the aerospace industry as a new growth area.
Chief executive officer Datuk Azman Mahmud said the aerospace ecosystem in Malaysia bodes well for the industry to grow further.
He said Midas support and incentives for the industry were in line with the Malaysian Aerospace Blueprint, a strategic roadmap laid out under the Business Services National Key Economic Area (NKEA), as part of the countrys Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
We are moving in the direction of becoming an important aerospace hub.
The current focus is on growing the aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul(MRO) and large pure-play engineering services.
Last year alone, the approved direct investments for the aerospace industryalmost doubled to RM682 million, he told a media briefing after officiating an aerospace conference organised by Mida yesterday.
Compared to neighbouring hubs, Azman said Malaysia had its own strength and comparative advantage in the regional aerospace industry.
Malaysia has more space and a competitive cost of doing business, while offering a better cost structure.
In the long run, companies will be looking at Malaysia in a very positive way in terms of the cost structure, he added.
Earlier in his speech, Azman said Malaysia was on track towards strengthening the aerospace ecosystem as the country intensified efforts to further technology and innovation capabilities.

Vehicles arent just becoming roving WiFi hot spots, theyre becoming connected devices that eventually will be part of the Internet of Things, the growing trend of objects that interact with each other over the Internet.
Having a SIM card embedded in a car isnt new. One of the longest-standing examples is General Motors OnStar service, which has operated through a partnership with Verizon, one of the largest wireless providers in the United States. The GSM Association (GSMA) forecasts a sevenfold increase in new vehicles equipped with mobile connectivity by 2018, and expects growth to grow substantially beyond that.
Trying to lead the way is GM with its 4G LTE in-car Internet service designed to give the car its own data plan. OnStar doesnt cost extra at the dealership; nor does it require an OnStar subscription. A majority of vehicles spread across the 2015 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC lines are equipped with it.
Its integrated into the vehicle, and we have the antenna to achieve optimal signal strength and coverage on the roof instead of in your pocket, says Fred Dixon, technology manager at GM Canada. You can connect up to seven devices to it and its seamless. You enter the car, it automatically connects and you can use that data, never having to turn on your phones hot spot.
Customers get a three-month trial with a hard cap of three gigabytes of data to play with. AT&T is the wireless carrier partner, and through agreements with most of its Canadian counterparts, Dixon confirms there are no roaming charges incurred in Canada and the United States. The car will automatically connect to whichever network is strongest in any particular locale within Canada, although users wouldnt notice the shift.
This all-in collaboration means consumers cant add the car to a shared monthly data plan they use with a smartphone and tablet, for example. The cars data is a separate cost paid to GM, and plans start at $10 a month for 200 megabytes all the way up to $250 for 10 gigabytes over 12 months. Rates are slightly cheaper for OnStar subscribers.
Mansell Nelson, senior vice-president of products and solutions for Rogers enterprise business, believes closer partnerships between auto makers and carriers are inevitable. Bell has long been the carrier partner for OnStar in Canada, and despite the agnosticism of the 4G LTE service, carriers will want to compete to do business with the original equipment manufacturers.
The car is becoming a computer and just one big API (application programming interface) that will need constant changing and updating, says Nelson. There are about 1.3 million new cars per year in Canada, and if more of them are connected, network capacity will have to continue to grow to accommodate them as connected devices.
He cites the example of Tesla, which has pushed updates hundreds of megabytes or even a gigabyte in size. And just like with Tesla, system updates pushed to GMs vehicles wont count against the customers data bucket.
This is the future, says Nelson. People werent used to the abrupt torque acceleration in Teslas cars, so they complained and the company rolled out a firmware update over-the-air [using AT&Ts network] that they could choose to install to reprogram their Tesla to accelerate more like a gasoline car.

Through study of the employees or citizens, and the relationships between them, we can harness the power of the crowd to drive impactful change
The essence of crowd science, a burgeoning and ubiquitous discipline stemming from traditional data science, is to draw relationships about underlying truths from crowdsourced data to find connections that may have otherwise not been seen. Psychology and sociology now come into play because individuals in the crowd interact and influence each other, creating new and often-changing truths.
Through study of the employees or citizens, and the relationships between them, we can harness the power of the crowd to innovate and drive impactful change on a large scale. However, there are concepts of crowd science that can be utilised on a more personal level as well; the art and application can be effectively used to uncover key players and understand how relationships between individuals influence greater processes and communities.
Emerging connections
Social network analysis is an example of a discipline that has been applied to several matters of international importance including the capture of Saddam Hussein. US intelligence analysts used advanced math on social networks visualised by link diagrams to uncover the key aid of Saddams, which lead to his capture. This individual was identified because he had a high 'betweeness centrality' score, meaning he was a natural connector and was found on the shortest path between many other nodes in Saddams network.

Formag INC is a Tokyo based company in Japan. They have launched a highly effective anti aging product known as "Collagen Supplement" for men and women in US and other countries. The sixteen-year-old company is known for improving health of Japanese men and women with their 100% natural Collagen Supplements. Now for the first time, they are offering a powerful anti aging supplement called Liquid Collagen Protein outside of Japan.
Initially, the product was restricted to Japan. According to Formag INC, they are looking to offer the same product in United States and other countries. Professor Yozo Ishidzuka, who exclusively works only for Formag INC has developed this supplement by the 'Patented High-Pressure Technology' required for producing this supplement.
Shop this product from here: http://puremarinecollagen.co.jp/shop/
Professor Ishidzukas Youth Elixir and Love water consist of 20 percent collagen concentration. Collagen is necessary protein produced within the human body. It is responsible for keeping your skin young, nails strong, insulated joints, and healthy hair. Collagen is a much talked about health supplement today as people spend great proportion of their income on staying young and beautiful. However, not many manufacturers have come up with 100 percent natural products and that is the reason for the success of this product.
Its important to understand the basics and principles at work behind the new anti aging product. According to recent studies on marine collagen, liquid form is found to be best. As scientists believe, while extracting, collagen may lose a few of its benefits unless it remains in its original form that is liquid. This liquid collagen is naturally present in fish. Japanese have been consuming seafood for generations, which is the main reason why they have higher longevity than their western counterparts. Formag INC has understood this, and hence, they believe their product needs to be made available not only in Japan but also to the western countries where it is more necessary.
What is Collagen? Know more here: http://puremarinecollagen.co.jp/what-is-collagen/
In addition to collagen, the product has high absorption rate. The company states that the products quality is better than most of other similar products out there, a crucial factor for any health supplement. At Formag INC quality is a major priority. They manufacture the product in a controlled scientific environment in small batches. Such process enables them to employ strict quality control which is often missing with other marine collagen products.
Formag INC is well experienced and dedicated to offer ultimate health satisfaction. Since 1998, they have been serving people of Japan. People who have tried this product in the USA are impressed with its performance. According to testimonials, people have seen results within three weeks of its use. Their skin not only looks young but fine lines have been softened. As the testimonials suggest, the product looks promising and is definitely worth trying.

BELGRADE -- Executive director of Reporters Without Borders Christian Mihr has said that "censorship in Serbia is neither direct nor transparent, but is easy to prove."
Mihr is one of the authors of the organization's recently published report about media freedom in the world, the Beta agency said.
In an interview for the Slavko Curuvija Foundation's Cenzolovka website - Mihr said that authorities in Serbia had "a very negative stance towards media freedom and suppressed critical, free reporting and influenced editorial policies by pressuring the media, often financially, via advertising."
Commenting on a recent statement made by EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn, who questioned the validity of the report by Reporters Without Borders regarding censorship in the media in Serbia, Mihr said that, during 2014, independent media and journalists who were critical were exposed to "serious pressure on several occasions, despite the fact that the process of Serbia's EU membership negotiations is under way."
Articles criticizing the government have been removed from the internet, while independent journalists were threatened or exposed to pressure, he said, according to the Beta report.
"Media freedom must be a strong condition for Serbia's admission to the EU," Mihr said.
Recollecting that Serbia had dropped on the organization's media freedom list by 13 places this year, Mihr estimated that this was "sad for a country which is a candidate for EU membership."
Commenting on the statement of Johannes Hahn that evidence was needed to support the claims of media freedom violations in Serbia, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said earlier this week that it showed the EU official was "an honorable man."
"I did not hear this evidence. I guess the idle ones who up until now made various insults will find them," Vuci remarked, and added he was "grateful to Hahn for showing he was ready to stand under fierce media pressure, but cared much more about the truth."
