Closing an eye or denying the evils of radicalism is a risk no democratic nation can afford to take, says Syerleena Abdul Rashid.
As the world experiences the worrying expansion of global radicalism, reports of violence and killings committed in the name of religion evoke all sorts of emotions it propels humanity into extreme ends: you either strongly disagree or strongly agree with the atrocities committed in the name of God, religion and faith.
Many of us are still trying to make sense of the recent attacks in Paris, the battles fought by Isis and the massacres carried out by Boko Haram. These aggressions arent just about a series of offensive cartoons or the overzealousness in installing an Islamic caliphate or even the evil of Western education, but it is a declaration of war against freedom of expression and human rights.
Most of all, it signals the breakdown of logic the raison dtre of religious wisdom and prudence; it indicates an abrupt shift to feverish radicalism.
Every heinous attack committed by religious extremists leaves many of us wondering: what is it about religion that makes one more inclined to embrace violence and lose ones sense of humour or common sense? Where do you draw the line between jest and insolence?
When the freedom to freely express oneself becomes incompatible with another religion, humanity is faced with the classic dilemma: do we adhere to religious constitutions or internationally protected rights? Although the idea of freedom (in this case, freedom of expression) is not without its fair share of controversy, it is not an absolute right but a privilege for some nations. On the other hand, freedom sometimes lacks precise guidelines needed to identify the uncertainties as ton whether it can absolutely safeguard ones faith from insult and mockery.
Although most of us were not entirely shocked that such heinous crimes were committed (Charlie Hebdo, a weekly French satirical publication, was notorious for publishing materials that were tasteless, offensive and insensitive to religious communities. The publication had been attacked in the past and various staff received death threats), what transpired on the morning of 7 January 2015 introduced us to another layer of evil sleeper cells that violate freedom, democracy and most of all, common sense.
But what transpired in Paris wasnt just about satire; it was about radicalism asserting its dominance over democracy and overshadowing the positive teachings of religion. This has been the dominating message extremists and religious fanatics convey worldwide.
Yes, satire can be dangerous and offensive because there are people who will not understand such jokes. It takes a certain level of political sophistication to appreciate an otherwise very serious message through humour. There is a saying that when rationality in politics begins to break down, the shift towards satire becomes eminent because at the end of the day, that is the only thing that makes any sense.
When the lives of civilians are threatened because certain factions are unable to resolve conflict through discussions or open debates, our lives become a commodity that is not without an expiry date. Democracy often becomes collateral damage in this tug-of-war between logic and religious fanaticism. This is when opinions, beliefs and feelings can get you killed.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio - East Cleveland Neighborhood Center was able to continue the Freedom Schools program last summer through community support, and this year the organization is reaching out again to keep the children's program running.
According to an East Cleveland Neighborhood Center press release, the Freedom Schools program provides summer support for children and families through a model curriculum with five essential components: high quality literacy enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health.
The program is designed by Children's Defense Fund and helps with summer reading loss as well as promotes social action and engagement for children ages 5-17, the release states. The program has been a resource that runs at no cost to the families it serves in and around East Cleveland.
Just as summer vacation began last year, East Cleveland Neighborhood Center learned its Freedom Schools program would not receive funding from United Way and the 70 children signed up for the program would have one less option for summer learning.
"Due to priority changes and differences in budget allocation East Clevelands Neighborhood Center struggled to keep the program running last summer. Every week became harder but through the dedication and commitment of our staff and support from the community and local organizations we were able to finish out programing without interruption," the release states. "Our community proved to us that this program was needed and that they were willing to fill in the gaps of funding to service our students."
As ECNC gets ready to implement the Freedom Schools program for a fifth consecutive summer, it is hoping to receive support from community members and organizations once again. To assist with the initial costs, a fundraising campaign has been started.
To contribute to the fundraiser, go here.
For more information about Freedom Schools, contact East Cleveland Neighborhood Center Executive Director Dabney Conwell at 216-932-3626 or email dconwell@ec-nc.org.

Filmed over two years, Declan O' Mahonys film, River Runner, uncovers disturbing truths about the River Lee whose eco-system has been seriously damaged since two ESB dams went into operation in the late 1950s.
This new60-minute documentaryfeaturesthe River Leein its leafy, sun-lit days, and as itprogresses underpainterly, winter skies. However, the core subject of the film is the preciousWild Atlantic Salmon and its uncertain fate.
Two passionate Corkmen, who are the principal contributors in the film, are untiring campaigners forthe future health of the Lee. Indeed, the riverwas once known as the 'silver' Lee because of the great profusion of fish therein.
There is a moral obligation on every interested party to do whats right, says angler Alan Nolan. Like many anotherboyish passion, his angling got superseded. Some young fellows want to play for Manchester United, others want to play in a chart-topping band. Young Alan was seriously addicted to angling.
When he was a young lad, he could have gone into angling "100 per cent and nothing else would have mattered. But the reality of life kicked in - work , job, getting on with your life. So Id be a passionate angler but Id also be functioning in the real world. You couldnt stay consumed by it.
Ecologist and environmental campaignerKevin Corcoran readily concedes that declining fish stocks of wild salmon are due to multiple factors, not just to the presence reservoirs that are too deep too allow spawning. However,he claims that the ESB reservoir he stands in front of never worked properly anyway, and that it is a white elephant.
If reason had prevailed, he says, and the water had been kept down by a metre in the 1957 hydroelectric scheme, thealluvial forest, known as the Gearagh, would have been saved. Through proper development, thearea could stillbea lucrativetourist attraction. He sees possibilities for eco-fishing and refers to the many walkers who come into the Gearagh.
Comprising thousands of acres, the Gearagh forest is one of the rarest habitats in the EU. The mortardwellings, which had been builtwithsand and limein the Gearagh weredemolished with gelignite blasts. The residents did not want toleave, but they were obliged to evacuate.600-year-old oaks and 1,000 year old yew trees wereknocked down over a three-year period to make way for the flood waters of the two hydro reservoirs.
Corcoran believes that the Gearagh forest area can be recovered. The hydro scheme has had its day, and it is time to move on is his belief. Photovoltaics are the new oil wells that have even surpassed inefficient wind farms, he explains. Yet there has been progress by the Lee, he acknowledges. Originally the endeavour was was all about creating electricity at least electricity and salmon are now on the agenda.
The natural forest can be allowed to regrow, he argues, and he has faith that this will happen. However, planting new trees would only be the equivalent of human skin grafts. If the water tables are lowered, the whole Gearagh will come back, he says.

Ronda Rousey
Try to pick a fight with one Rousey, and it appears the rest of the clan is ready to jump in.
Following their respective wins this past weekend, UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rouseyand Invicta FC featherweight titleholder Cristiane Justino longtime rivals who have bickered publicly for the past few years appeared they might finally be on a collision course.
However, after Rousey (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) scored a quick 14-submission win over Cat Zingano (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in Saturdays UFC 184 headliner and after Justino (13-1) posted a dominant 46-second TKO win over Charmaine Tweet (6-5) a night before at Invicta FC 11s main event UFC President Dana White played down the likelihood of a Rousey vs. Cyborg fight.
The main reason? Justinos difficulty getting down to 135 pounds and Rouseys (and Whites) apparent reluctance to have the UFC champ move up for a featherweight or catchweight bout.
On Monday Justino called out Rousey (via Twitter):
It elicited a response from Rouseys mom (and fellow judo standout), Dr. AnnMaria De Mars (via Twitter):
Of course, Rousey has taken a similar stance. Prior to UFC 184, the champ fielded numerous questions about Cyborg. Rousey, though, made a dig at Justinos passed failed steroid test and said the onus is on her opponent to make the 135-pound limit (warning: contains some NSFW language):
With what is likely Rouseys biggest challenge and most marketable matchup still anything but a certainty, the 28-year-old titleholder is taking a small break from fighting. As reported on Monday, Rousey has landed a role in Mile 22, an action-thriller starring Iko Uwais and produced by Peter Berg. Filming is expected to begin in May.

Fleets of cyborg cockroaches could someday roam into damaged nuclear power plants or collapsed mines to carry out reconnaissance or locate survivors.
A team of researchers implanted live cockroaches with electrodes that stimulate the nerves in the insects' antennae, enabling the scientists to steer the creatures around like remote-controlled toys.
While people may normally think of cockroaches as pests that live on human waste, these insects are better than any small-scale robots that exist today, said Hong Liang, a materials scientist at Texas A&M University in College Station, and co-author of the study published online today (March 4) in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
The remote-controlled roaches can "go anywhere you guide them to," including places humans couldn't go, such as disaster zones, Liang told Live Science.
In the new study, Liang and her colleagues implanted electrodes in the nerves of American and discoid cockroaches (Periplaneta Americanaand Blaberus discoidalis, respectively).
The researchers glued tiny backpacks to the backs of the discoid roaches, which were large enough to support them. Each pack held a microcontroller, wireless transceiver and a battery.
The resulting cyborg roaches were leashed and made to run on a trackball, while the researchers pressed buttons to deliver electrical zaps to the nerves in the insects' thoraxes, causing them to turn left or right. Liang and her team were able to make the roaches walk and turn in the desired direction 60 percent of the time, they said.
It may sound cruel to control a living insect using a remote. Fortunately, "We don't work them hard," Liang said. "We let them rest."
Now, Liang and her colleagues are developing a noninvasive version of the cockroach control system, which uses a vibrating motor positioned near the roaches' antennae to make the insects move. This would work because cockroaches have a sensor to detect sounds or vibrations from predators, for example. Unlike the electrodes, the vibrating device would not involve surgery or risk damaging the insect.
Cockroaches are very interesting creatures, Liang said. People think they are disgusting, but in fact they're constantly cleaning themselves, she said. If they lose a leg, they can grow another one. And they're one of only a few species that can survive being exposed to dangerous amounts of nuclear radiation.

Cristiane Justino
After UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rouseys mom poked fun at Cristiane Justino on Tuesday, the Invicta FC featherweight titleholder has fired back.
Rouseys and Justinos title defenses (which came at UFC 184 and Invicta FC 11, respectively) brought about the obvious question: Will Rousey (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and Cyborg (13-1) arguably the two top female fighters in the sport today finally face off?
Although Rousey (and UFC President Dana White) have maintained such a fight will happen only at 135 pounds, Cyborg has pushed for a catchweight fight.
When Cyborg then tweeted Rousey and asked if she needs the number for UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, Rouseys mom, Dr. AnnMaria De Mars, offered the following on Tuesday: Ill give you a number 135.
That prompted a response earlier today from Justino. As Cyborg wrote (via Twitter):
Justino, of course, faces an uphill battle. The fighter, who weighed in at 145 pounds for her Invicta FC title defense but said she weighed 175 pounds the following night, is going to have no easy time getting downto 135. However, Rousey seems unwilling to budge.
Prior to this past weekends fights, Rousey made a dig at Justinos passed failed steroid test and said shell only fight her at 135:
