Blast beats Comets, 10-7, advances to MASL finals

With a 10-7 win Sunday over the host Missouri Comets in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Blast advanced to the Major Arena Soccer League championship series.

The Blast improved to 21-2 overall and remained unbeaten in three playoff games. On offense, Vini Dantas had three goals and Tony Donatelli added two. Defensively, Blast captain Pat Healey (Calvert Hall, Towson University) kept MASL Most Valuable Player candidate Leo Gibson in check, while goalkeeper William Vanzela finished with 24 saves in the win.

The Blast will face the Monterrey Flash, which beat the Las Vegas Legends in the Western Conference finals Sunday. More information regarding series dates and times will be announced today.

Sunday's game got off to a slow start, with only Missouri's Kiel Williams scoring in the opening period.

The second quarter, though, turned into a shootout. The Blast tied the game with a goal from Mike Deasel, and Lucas Roque, the team's leading scorer, found the net to give the Blast the 2-1 lead. After a Comets penalty, Lucio Gonzaga found Tony Donatelli for the team's third straight goal.

Missouri answered, with Alain Matingou's shot cutting the Blast's lead to one. The Blast fired back when Onua Obasi gained possession at the top of the arc and rocketed a shot past Comets goalkeeper Danny Waltman, his 10th goal of the season. Missouri defender John Sosa scored with one second left in the half to cut the team's deficit to 4-3.

The Blast opened the second half by converting on its second power-play opportunity, as Dantas recorded his 17th goal of the season to extend the Blast lead's to two. The Comets soon tied the game with back-to-back goals by Bryan Perez and Josh Gardner. Dantas' second goal of the game returned the lead to the Blast, and with seconds remaining in the quarter, Healey, who leads the team in assists, fed Donatelli for a goal and 7-5 advantage.

In a high-intensity fourth quarter, Dantas completed his hat trick to put the Blast up by three. Goals from Missouri's Gardner and Gibson made it a one-point game with just minutes to go, but Vanzela and the Blast defense stepped up to secure victory. Adriano Dos Santos and Levi Houpeau (UMBC) scored empty-net goals in the final minute to provide the final margin.

Psoriasis is a medical condition typically marked by the emergence of itchy or burning patches of red, scaly skin, and those who suffer from it typically try to cope with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and vitamin D supplements.

Now, according to a new study in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, researchers at eight different research centers have developed a treatment that shows potential to cure the disease.

For years, scientists have known that an inflammation-causing protein called interleukin-23 could be a key to a cure. However, past efforts have not produced very promising results.

The striking result we achieved using a human antibody that targets the signal interleukin-23 suggests we are on the threshold of doing something very different from our current model of treating psoriasis with immunosuppressive drugs throughout an adult lifetime, said study author James Krueger, head of the Laboratory of Investigative Dermatology at Rockefeller University in New York City. It raises the possibility of working toward long-term remission in other words, a cure.

In 2004, a team including Krueger indicated a major role for interleukin-23 in the disease, and study since then has backed this hypothesis. Researchers say that interleukin-23 commences a sequence of events that leads to inflammation in the skin, abnormal growth of skin cells, and dilation of blood vessels.

Kendrick Lamar's epic 'Mortal Man' features fiery 2Pac interview

In the hours after Kendrick Lamars new album To Pimp a Butterfly was released a week early, one track, Mortal Man, started getting traction.

For good reason: Its a 12-minute epic that features wondrous Lamar verses about Nelson Mandela, devotion, spiritual enlightenment and power. More important, after a postscript Lamar spoken-word piece, the artist conducts a time-travel interview with the late Tupac Shakur that gradually rises into a free-jazz jam seeminglybeamed from 1967.

Its a fiery few minutes in which the two converse about, among other things, fame, the fattening of the upper class and the lifecycle of the black mans power, something that Shakur says diminishes at an early age. Once you turn 30 its like they take the heart and soul out of a man, out of a black man in this country. And you dont wanna fight no more. And if you dont believe me you can look around, you dont see no loudmouth 30-year-old [black men]. (That and other quotes viaGenius.com.)

Lamar updates the dead rapper on the current situation by saying theres nothing but turmoil going on.

With that, Shakur makes a (cuss-heavy) prediction, one sure to fuel right-wing fear-mongering for the rest of the year. I think that [black men] is tired-a grabbin' ... out the stores and next time its a riot theres gonna be bloodshed for real. I dont think America can know that. I think America think we was just playing and its gonna be some more playing but it aint gonna be no playing. Its gonna be murder, you know what Im saying, its gonna be like Nat Turner, 1831 ...

Lamar's response, which is followed by a parable about a caterpillar and its cocoon: "In my opinion, only hope that we kinda have left is music and vibrations. A lotta people dont understand how important it is. Sometimes I be like, get behind a mic and I dont know what type of energy Imma push out, or where it comes from. Trip me out sometimes."

The same could be said about "To Pimp a Butterfly," currently tripping out much of the music world.
