Why Indiana's religious freedom act could cost $50 million (+video)

While many have voiced their opinions against Indianas controversial religious freedom bill, few have been able to attach a $50 million price tag to their concerns.

Adrian Swartout of Gen Conone of the largest, longest-running gaming conventions in the worldwrote a letter to Indianas Republican Gov. Mike Pence claiming that if the bill becomes law, its negative impacts will affect its 56,000 annual attendees, forcing them to reconsider Indianapolis as its home.

Swartout wrote in her letter:

[Gen Con is] happy to provide an environment that welcomes all, and the wide-ranging diversity of our attendees has become a key element to the success and growth of our convention . . . Legislation that could allow for refusal of service or discrimination against our attendees will have a direct negative impact on the state's economy, and will factor into our decision-making on hosting the convention in the state of Indiana in future years.

The convention started in Geneva, Wisconsin in 1968, but moved to Indianapolis in 2003. Taking place over a four-day period, the convention attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, resulting in an estimated $50 million impact for Indiana's capital city. Many of its fans are applauding Swartouts letter, feeling it reflects Gen Cons spirit of inclusivity.

Is $50 million enough for Gov. Pence change his mind?

The bill passed Indianas House on Monday in an overwhelming 63 to 31 vote, mostly along party lines. While it awaits the governors signature, Pence has already expressed his support of the bill.

The Indiana bill allows individual religious freedom to trump other laws if they impose a substantial burden on the free exercise of religion, reported The Christian Science Monitor in a previous story. Religious freedom would prevail unless the government can demonstrate a compelling state interest and prove that a laws religious burdens were the least restrictive means of furthering that interest.

Gen Con may have addressed its concerns in its letter, but spokesperson Stacia Kirby said that the convention is under contract to remain in Indianapolis through 2020 and has no intention of breaking its agreement, the Indianapolis Star reported. The bill would, however, factor into future decisions.

Chris Gahl, vice president of marketing and communication for Visit Indy, noted that Chicago is Indianapolis main competitor for convention business. Illinois is one of 19 states that already has a law similar to the proposed freedom of religion bill in place.

Shimano Conquers e-bike Market With Smart and Light System

NUNSPEET, The Netherlands, March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Shimano STEPS wins Bike Innovation Award and is installed in 23 brands

Shimano, known for bicycle components, has launched a new integrated system for e-bikes. At the end of February, the high tech lightweight Shimano STEPS system immediately won the Dutch Bike Innovation Award 2015 and since then has already been installed in23 bicycle brands, including well-known brands such as Trek, Cortine and Cannondale.

The Japanese manufacturer had not yet broken into the Dutch market for electric bicycles. In 2014 the sales of e-bikes increased by 16 percent. 223,000 of the 1.05 million bicycles sold in the Netherlands were e-bikes, as the RAI recently announced. In this growing e-bike market Shimano wants to help people get the most out of cycling. Where competing brands often only supply the battery or some parts for e-bikes, Shimano has a developed complete system with all parts. From the drive to the battery, from the gear system, bicycle computer to the chain.

Characteristic of Shimano is the investment the company makes in Research & Development and has released an intelligent, silent and light system with all kinds of high tech innovations such as electronic shifting (Di2). Weighing just 3.1 kilogrammes Shimano STEPS is one of the lightest drive systems on the market. This is not only important for the 50+ target group that want to minimise their pedalling weight. The compact and light design also improves the control of the cyclist and as a result is suitable for a wide target group.

Using sensor technology information about torque, speed, cadence and crank position is gathered. This ensures smooth and optimally aligned pedalling power. The e-bike system stops when the cyclist has achieved a speed of 25 kilometres per hr. The battery has a capacity of 418Wh, has to be recharged after four hrs and after 1,000 recharges still holds the same capacity.

With the eco mode on the bicycle computer, cyclists can cycle up to 120 kilometres. It even boasts a walking support function that helps push the bicycle up slopes up to 6 kilometres per hour.

In the future, the e-bike system will be further supplemented with innovative parts, recently additions include the Nexus-8 Di2 hub. This ensures that the electric bicycle shifts automatically, just like the automatic gear box of a car.

The jury of the RAI awarded the system the Bike Innovation Award because of its compact design, low weight and the total integration of components. According to the jury, this makes Shimano STEPS a true innovation. Dealers and bike manufacturers also respond enthusiastically to the new system. During training days Shimano STEPS got grade 9 and the bicycle brands Alba, Bonaventure, Cannondale, Cortina, Dutch ID, Evobike, Flanders, Granville, Hercules, Johnny Loco, KTM, Merida, Oxford, Pegagus, Puch, SCOTT, Spiked Cycles, Stella, Thompson, Trek, Velo de Ville, Venturelli and Vogue have bikes with the system in their product range.

Texan has passion for protecting beaches, Gulf coastline

GALVESTON, Texas -

It was 66 degrees on a sunny February afternoon, and along the stretch of coast where the seawall ends abruptly, Ellis Pickett was walking and talking nonstop about stewardship of the Texas coast.

"I believe in standing up to the people who are trying to steal the beaches from the people of Texas," he said.

Pickett is a tall, lean man with brown hair tinged in silver. He wore bluejeans, a blue and white striped shirt, sunglasses, and well-worn boots.

The Galveston County Daily News reports he spoke plainly and persuasively in a pleasant native drawl about what's at stake for the state's beaches, then he stopped, lifted his face toward the sun and gazed out over the Gulf.

The tide was high and the sun was sparkling on the water.

"Look at this it's beautiful," Pickett said. "All I want is to be sure that there are safe, clean public beaches for my granddaughters to enjoy."

This particular spot, just beyond the seawall with its pink granite riprap, has special meaning to Pickett. It's where he first drove his 1956 GMC pickup truck onto the beach in 1964.

It's where he learned to surf on a 9-foot polyurethane surfboard rented for $5 a day.

"Back then, in Texas, you could get your driver's license when you were 14 years old; now that was a stupid law," he said.

Health advisories issued at four Hillsborough beaches

Health advisories were issued Wednesday at four Hillborough County beaches based on criteria for bacteria levels recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Samples taken this week were above thresholds for enterococci bacteria for the water at Ben T. Davis, Davis Islands, Picnic Island and Simmons Park beaches.

The beaches under advisories should be considered unsafe for swimming, the countys health department said.

The beaches will be sampled again this Monday. When sampling indicates the water is within the satisfactory range, the advisories will be lifted.

The health department has been conducting coastal quality monitoring at nine sites once every two weeks since August 2000 and weekly since August 2002 through the states Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program.

Enterococci bacteria is typically found in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals and may cause human disease, infections, or rashes. It is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage, the health department said.
