The Blacklist: Not How the Truth Works

[This is a review of The Blacklist season 2, episode 18. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

How many times have Liz and Red begun a conversation only to have it end with him revealing some small kernel of truth and then, instead of letting him explain, Liz walks away, saying something to the effect that theyre done, or their relationship is strictly business? And how many times has The Blacklist brought them back together after a few episodes, when Liz learns that Red did what he did for a good (if not misguided) reason, and soon the two are best buddies again (buying and selling apartments to reduce the debt of guilt hanging over both their heads)?

The end of Vanessa Cruz offers the audience a few weeks worth of Liz-Red enmity in the span of a few seconds, after Liz delivers the Fulcrum, and Red delivers the news that he hired Tom (sure, its Jacob, but I guess were sticking with Tom? He looks like a Tom) to enter her life. What would have been the start of some serious cold-shouldering by Liz was cut short by an assassins bullet that struck Red down, leaving the episode on sort of a weak cliffhanger, since we know Reds not going to die. Someone puts a bullet in Captain Useless (a.k.a. Donald Ressler) or Aram Mojtabai and there might be some intrigue based on how expendable those characters are.

Still, there are plenty of questions to be had in the wake of Reds shooting. Questions like: who was the shooter, and did Liz and Dembe actually see him/her, or were they just blindly lashing out, spraying bullets into a populated area? Theres also the question of why was Red shot? Did it have to do with the tricky backchannel power play he attempted with regard to the syndicate? Or was it because the Fulcrum was finally in his hands (or Dembes, more accurately)? It stands to reason those two factors had something to do with it. After all, everyone wants the Fulcrum. So, it could have been an order sent down by Jasper, or by the Director (or, more likely, both). Or, knowing how this show likes to operate, it could have been someone totally random. Some Romanian expat with whom Red once spent a few weeks in Crete a few weeks that got very messy, Red would probably say with a hearty laugh.

For what its worth, the episode does make a valiant effort to be about more than Red getting shot, or getting his hands on the Fulcrum. It even attempts to be more than Tom sticking around, talking to Liz about his plans to buy a boat and open up a charter business, even though he doesnt know how to swim. It even tries to pretend that stilted line about learning how to swim wasnt the worst bit of dialogue the show had chewed up and spit out in a long time.

But thats the main problem with Vanessa Cruz: for all its mildly engaging procedural antics about a woman framing rich businessmen (in what appears to be a never ending revenge scheme), it is so obviously trying not to be about Red and Liz that the seams are showing in virtually ever scene that doesnt feature them. The episode even includes a scene wherein the titular Cruz has a skeevy businessman in a leather fetish mask on a hotel bed. And while that sort of scenario is well within The Blacklists particular puerile wheelhouse, its so disconnected from everything else thats going on, it feels like another show. At one point, Ressler is digging through Cruzs meticulously organized treasure trove of physical evidence that she uses to ruin said businessmen, and it took a minute to remember what the hell he was doing there.

NASA wants to deflect an asteroid in 2022: 4 reasons why

ESAScience Office An illustration of the plume and crater left by NASA's dart probe after crashing into an asteroid a test of technologies intended to help us deflect asteroids in the future.

In 2022, NASA plans to send a probe crashing into an asteroid at more than 13,000 miles per hour to deflect it off its course.

This particular asteroid isn't a threat to us. But NASA is trying to figure out how it might defend Earth from asteroids more generally in case a big one really does head our way in the future.

This is all part of a joint mission NASA's planning with the European Space Agency called Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA). It will start with the launch of a European craft in 2020 to study and map the asteroid first. ESA entered the preliminary design phase of that initial reconnaissance mission earlier this week.

The goal is to develop the technology and expertise that might be necessary to nudge an asteroid out of its orbit if we ever discovered one heading for Earth. It might sound far-fetched, but the truth is that asteroids are a potentially serious threat and foresighted missions like this could theoretically be the difference between a closely averted disaster and catastrophe.

1. The plan to crash into an asteroid

In 2020, the European Space Agency plans to launch its Asteroid Impact Mission, or AIM probe. It'll travel to an asteroid named Didymos, which is orbited by a relatively small (about 550 feet wide) asteroid called Didymoon.

Over the course of a year or so, AIM will orbit Didymoon, mapping its surface and collecting data on its mass and overall structure. Current plans also call for it to send out a pair of smaller satellites to collect more data, as well as a lander that would touch down on Didymoon itself becoming just the fourth craft (if Japan's current Hayabusa-2 mission is a success) to make a controlled landing on an asteroid.

Then, in 2021, NASA would launch another probe, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART. When it arrives in late 2022, the 660-pound probe would crash into Didymoon at a speed of more than 13,000 miles per hour, likely creating a crater and slightly changing the path of the asteroid's orbit. AIM would continue to collect data on Didymoon, providing valuable information on the physics of redirecting asteroids in space.

2. NASA is trying to avoid a chain reaction of asteroids

NASA World Map Shows Where Lightning Strikes Most

By now, we hope, youve abandoned that old folk myth that lightning never strikes twice. (In fact, a 1997 study found that lighting flashesstrike multiple spots simultaneously about a third of the time, and that your chances of being struck are about 45 percent higher than the number of flashes would seem to indicate).

So now that weve gotten that out of the way, heres another burning question: Where does lightning strike most frequently on the planet? As it turns out, those brainy folks at NASA have the answer.

NEWS: Man Struck By Lightning Twice

Between 1998 and 2013, NASAsTropical Rainfall Measuring MissionandOrbView-1/Microlabsatellites gathered data on the number and location of lightning flashes worldwide, and what they found is shown on the map above. As it turns out, lightning tends to happen most often in areas closest to the equator, and more often over land than over the oceans.

That makes sense, because asNASAs Earth Observatory websiteexplains, solid earth absorbs sunlight and heats up faster than water. That results in stronger convection and greater atmospheric instability, which leads to the production of the sort of storms that produce lightning.

The spots on the planet with the highest amount of lightning turn out to be Lake Maracaibo in northwestern Venezuela, where the combination of heat, humidity and wind from the surrounding Andes mountain range causes spectacular storms, and the far eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

NEWS: Mushroom Clouds Form Over Idaho Lightning Fires

According toReuters, the Lake Maraciabo area has lightning storms 300 nights each year, and each kilometer of the area is hit by 250 lightning strikes annually.

NASA scientist Daniel Cecil noted on the Earth Observatory website that the new map is far more detailed thanprevious effortsto chart global lightning. The longer record allows us to more confidently identify some of these finer details, he said. We can examine seasonality, and variability through the day and year-to-year.

Nasa prepares to test its 'flying saucer' heat shield

Nasa will fly its new heat shield from Hawaii in a couple of months Tomorrow it will perform a spin-test of the new technology It is known as the low density supersonic decelerator (LDSD) Nasa says it could one day be used to take humans onto Mars

When the first astronauts land on Mars, they will not use a conventional parachute or heat shield that has been used before.

Instead, upon impacting the upper Martian atmosphere, a large inflatable saucer-shaped structure will slow their progress.

This is the low density supersonic decelerator (LDSD) and, in June, Nasa will perform the latest test of this groundbreaking technology - a vital next step in the journey to Mars.

Alastair Cook accepts only a series win will suffice against West Indies

It is perhaps apt England begin their tour of the West Indies in close proximity to the setting of Death in Paradise. After all, anything other than victory in the three-Test series and there is likely to be blood in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean.

The BBC murder mystery is filmed on Guadeloupe, part of the Leeward Islands and an area that also includes the neighbouring St Kitts. That is where England arrived on Friday for their two warm-up matches against a St Kitts & Nevis Invitation XI that precede the series against West Indies.

Sharks are still circling Peter Moores, Englands coach, after the shipwreck that was his sides shambolic World Cup campaign. The positions of Moores and Paul Downton, the managing director of England cricket, were significantly weakened by the shambles in Australia and New Zealand.

Alastair Cook, the returning Test captain who is without an international century in almost two years, could do with some convincing performances as well. In light of the comments by Colin Graves, the incoming chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, the futures of all three men could well rest on the outcome of the series here.

Graves does not take office until next month but has wasted no time in laying down the law. He has already caused offence in this part of the world by writing off a West Indies team shorn of nine regulars thanks to the Indian Premier League as mediocre. The bluff Yorkshireman has also put the triumvirate of Moores, Downton and Cook on notice by saying there will be inquiries if England lose the series.

Things are always heightened in the build-up to an Ashes summer. However, this year the stakes have been raised even higher by Englands World Cup embarrassment and Gravess encouragement to Kevin Pietersen. The exiled batsman, discarded amid the purge that followed the 2013-14 Ashes whitewash, has rejoined Surrey and committed to playing first-class cricket after negotiating a release from his IPL deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad. An England recall seems highly implausible, if not impossible. However, the fact Pietersen is still dominating the news agenda 14 months on from his very public divorce from the ECB is a distraction the team could do without.

Cook, who has benefitted from the three months off provided to him by losing the one-day captaincy, is at least aware of the stakes. Asked on Saturdaywhat would constitute success over the next five weeks, he replied simply: A series win.

That really is the bottom line and despite all the problems the team have endured in recent months, they should have more than enough quality to beat West Indies.

UK Mobile Broadband Speeds Average 5.9Mbps on 3G and 14.7Mbps on 4G

Ofcom has released its second study into the national performance of Mobile Broadband services. The results show that the average mobile Internet download speed had shrunk slightly since last years study, with 4G networks delivering 14.7Mbps (down from 15.1Mbps) and 3G doing 5.9Mbps (down from 6.1Mbps).

The telecoms regulators latest study is based off 120,000 test samples conducted using Smartphones (October to December 2014) in five sample towns and cities where both 3G and 4G networks have been deployed: Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Newcastle and Poole/Bournemouth. The downside to this approach is that it wont be very good at reflecting the picture outside of urban areas.

The study also tested upload speeds and reported an average 4G upload rate of 13.6Mbps, which shrinks to just 1.6Mbps on 3G. Mind you even the 3G upload performance makes the dominant form of ADSL2+ based fixed line broadband connections look quite weak and the 4G score is enough to give popular superfast fixed line cable and FTTC services a challenge. However mobile data is usually more restrictive (usage caps, traffic managementetc.).

Never the less it wont come as much surprise to find that EE, which has been rolling out 4G for a lot longer than their rivals and is known to have a more advanced network in some of the test cities, tops the table with the fastest average 4G download speed of 18.6Mbps. A quick summary of the key results can be found below, make of it what you will.

Ofcom now intends to undertake further testing of 3G and 4G services and will publish a third report in 2015, whichwe hope will look at more parts of the country than the big urban areas.

Claudio Pollack, Ofcoms Consumer and Content Group Director, said:

People are increasingly connected, communicating and sharing content on their mobiles when out and about. 4G is delivering a significantly enhanced mobile experience and, as these services roll out across the UK, our research will support consumers when choosing the right mobile package for their needs.

Separately RootMetrics has also published a report that reveals mobile internet performance for the four major networks in the UKs busiest airports. EE was ranked the top-performing network for mobile internet performance at both Heathrow and Gatwick. At Heathrow, Vodafone, O2, and Three tied for second place. At Gatwick, EE was followed by Vodafone, Three UK and O2 respectively.

Apparently EEs download and upload speeds were considerably faster than those of any other network at both airports. At Heathrow, EE recorded a median download speed of 31.2Mbps, while Three recorded the second-fastest median download speed at 4.6Mbps.

Meanwhile, at Gatwick, EE recorded a median download speed of 20.4Mbps and a median upload speed of 17.9Mbps. EEs closest competitor in download speed testing was Vodafone, which registered a speed of 5.7Mbps, while O2 and Three each recorded the second-fastest median upload speed at 1.6Mbps.
