Stop Fearing Artificial Intelligence

Editors note:Tim Oates is chief scientist at CircleBack. He holds a PhD in computer science with an emphasis in machine learning from UMass Amherst and is also Oros Family Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at University of Maryland Baltimore County.

As yet another tech pioneer with no connection to artificial intelligence steps out to voice his fears about AI being catastrophic for the human race, I feel the need respond. While I respect Steve Wozniaks technological contributions to our culture, I fear that he, like so many others (Musk, Hawking, Gates), is poisoning the well for fear of something he doesnt truly understand.

Conflating facts of technologys rapid progress with a Hollywood understanding of intelligent machines is provocative (honestly, its a favorite in my most-loved science fiction books and movies), but this technology doesnt live in a Hollywood movie, it isnt HAL or Skynet, and it deserves a grounded, rational look.

For the sake of argument, lets assume that we have (or can plausibly) create a superhuman AI. Such an AI could, like us, think all kinds of things the humans created me and theyre really interesting or the humans bodily functions are mildly annoying or all humans must die! all of which are equally speculatively plausible. So why anyone gives the doomsday scenario any more weight than the others is a bit of a mystery to me.

It may be that, in a world filled with pop culture stories and polluted by a fear of tech, the doomsday story is the most entertaining, taking its spot next to UFO-created crop circles and the like. But the assumptions that this story-presented-as-an-idea rests on are unfounded and highly improbable.

Heres what youre supposed to believe about true AI:

Sound reasonable to you? Me either.

But for claritys sake, lets unpack these assumptions, starting with the notion that AI has a distinct I capable of stepping outside its intended programming. Even the quickest glance over the history of AI confirms theres a tradeoff between machine intelligence and adaptability.

Narrowly intelligent machines like Deep Blue and Watson can play chess or answer Jeopardy questions better than anyone alive while not being able to understand checkers or the Trivia Crack app. More general-intelligence machines, on the other hand, can learn to do many things but will ultimately do them all poorly.

How can an investor hedge exposure to the aerospace sector?

A:

Investors can hedge exposure to the aerospace sector by investing in sectors that move inversely with the broader market. The aerospace sector is a highly cyclical sector; when the broader market moves upward, aerospace moves upward to an even greater degree. When the market takes a dive, losses in the aerospace sector are greater than average. An investor can protect himself from this scenario by devoting a portion of his portfolio to counter-cyclical sectors that gain while the broader market is contracting.

There are three types of sectors in terms of how they relate to the broader market. Cyclical sectors move in the same direction as the broader market. The more cyclical the sector, the more it moves up and down with the market. Non-cyclical sectors are marked by stability, even when the broader market makes big moves in either direction. These sectors tend to expand very slowly over time and are a good fit for conservative investors who fear their portfolios being wiped out by large market declines. The third sector class is the counter-cyclical sector, which moves inversely with the broader market.

A sector's beta coefficient indicates whether it is cyclical, non-cyclical or counter-cyclical. The broader market is represented by a beta coefficient of 1. A beta greater than 1 indicates a highly cyclical sector, while a beta between 0 and 1 indicates a sector less cyclical than the broader market. A negative beta signifies that a sector is counter-cyclical and moves in the opposite direction of the broader market.

The aerospace sector, comprised of airplane parts manufacturers, airline companies and defense firms, has a beta of 1.16. It is 16% more volatile than the broader market, making it a profitable sector when the market is rising but a risky one when the market drops. Historically, markets have risen more than they have fallen, so many investors gravitate toward cyclical sectors, such as aerospace, that beat the market during good times. However, investors who understand that high risk goes hand in hand with high volatility hedge exposure to the aerospace sector by investing in counter-cyclical sectors.

Metals, particularly gold and silver, are great for hedging against aerospace and other highly cyclical sectors. Because they exist in finite quantities and have intrinsic values, many investors rotate into them and out of paper investments when stock markets take a dip. Metals are counter-cyclical because they perform well when the broader market is doing poorly. An investor who is heavy into cyclical sectors, such as aerospace, can mitigate heavy losses during bear markets by devoting a portion of his portfolio to metals and other counter-cyclical sectors. The gains made by counter-cyclical sectors during market declines help offset the big losses endured by aerospace and other highly cyclical sectors.

PPG Expands Use of DocOrigin Document Generation Software

Global aerospace manufacturer replaces outdated document software with next-gen solution from Eclipse

CAPE CORAL, Fla. Eclipse Corporation, a provider of enterprise document generation solutions, announced today that PPG Aerospace, a business of PPG Industries, a Fortune 200 global manufacturer, has expanded the license use of DocOrigin 3.0 to support critical division document generation systems. DocOrigin was selected in December of 2013 to replace end-of-life systems from Adobe. PPG and Eclipse worked together during 2014 to migrate many mission critical forms to use DocOrigin in the production environment. The DocOrigin license use was recently expanded for use across all of PPG Aerospace.

PPG Aerospace is a unique group of products and services that each have a long history as an aviation leader. PPG Aerospace Transparencies is the world's largest supplier of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies. PPG Aerospace PRC-DeSoto is the leading global producer and distributor of Aerospace coatings, sealants, and packaging and application systems. PPG has global headquarters in Pittsburgh and operates in nearly 70 countries around the world.

According to Justyn Hancock, Global IT Director, PPG Aerospace recognized that their legacy document systems were no longer being supported and the division needed a more modern and efficient solution. "Our current system had reached end-of-life and we were running on obsolete software," explains Justyn. "We evaluated a number of different solutions and considered various options. In the end we chose DocOrigin."

PPG felt that DocOrigin stood out because of the automated form conversion tools that made their migration easy. "The need to accurately convert our existing form templates and the time required for the migration was a big concern for us," says Justyn. "DocOrigin supported all our existing apps and we converted them all without the need for much reprogramming of our ERP software and without consuming many of our internal resources."

Another reason PPG chose DocOrigin was because of its extended capabilities to dynamically enhance the existing forms without having to make changes to their ERP system. PPG also is now able to produce XML directly from our ERP, which PPG plans to use to bring more modern features and benefits to their documents in the future. "We will be consolidating the number of forms we have under DocOrigin, the data driven templates will allow us to reduce our forms maintenance and support." says Justyn Hancock. "And any new forms will be created with DocOrigin GUI Design software."

"We are excited about our relationship with PPG Aerospace. DocOrigin was selected after months of rigorous evaluations and testing by the PPG team. PPG Aerospace joins a growing list of high-tech manufacturers adopting DocOrigin as the solution of choice to replace older, end-of-life systems," said Steve Luke, CEO of Eclipse.

Nanomedicine Aims New Treatments at Cancer and Dangerous Wounds

Working on a very small scale lets scientists give drugs abilities denied to larger molecules

Harry Campbell

A molecule of DNA, holding its blueprint for life, is about 2.5 billionths of a meter in diameter. Scientists now have the ability to push and pull and build molecules of that size, as well as to create devices that sense them with unprecedented precision. These skills, gained through painstaking work during the past decade, are leading to new medicines and ways of diagnosing disease. In this special report, Scientific American examines what nanomedicine is bringing us now, what is coming soon and what the future will likely hold.

Right now chemotherapy is a major focus, and drugs that can slip into tumors because of their fine-grained construction are showing success where other medications fail patients [see Cancer Drugs Hit Their Mark, on page 44]. Diagnostic tests are also taking advantage of the small sizes, using probes of unusually shaped DNA that can detect cancer with remarkable accuracy. Next, in the near future, patients should be able to use smart bandages made with nano-sized molecules that enhance the healing of severe woundsor that signal doctors when healing is not happening [see A Smarter Bandage, on page 47]. Further out in time, researchers hope to attach tiny molecular motors to drugs, driving them through the bloodstream to their targets [see Launch the Nanobots! on page 50]. These are feats of nanoengineering, invisible to the eye, yet they could have an outsize effect on health.

Group fighting 'Net censorship in China presses on despite DDoS attack

After facing a DDoS attack, an activist group isnt backing down in its attempts to end Chinas Internet censorship.

I think that we are more confident than we were before that our successful execution of our strategy is going to lead us to achieve our mission, said the group via email on Tuesday.

GreatFire.org suffered a distributed denial of service attack last month that threatened to cripple its activities. The anonymous group, which is based out of China, believes the countrys government was behind the attack.

Although China has always denied any involvement in state-sponsored hacking, the country has been suspected of carrying out cyberattacks against U.S. companies and other activist groups.

GreatFire tries to offer ways to bypass Chinas censorship, including by hosting mirror websites to blocked destinations such as Google, the BBC and The New York Times.

Links to these mirror websites are hosted on GitHub, a software development platform China hasnt censored. But last month, GitHub also suffered a DDoS attack that was the largest in its history and appeared to target GreatFires page on the platform.

Both DDoS attacks have ended. During the attack against GreatFire, the group requested public support, and said that its bandwidth costs had reached up to US$30,000 a day, as a result.

We learned a lot from the attacks and there was a great outpouring of support and folks offering their financial and technical assistance, GreatFire said.

GitHub continues to host links to the mirror websites the group has created. But on Tuesday, the actual mirror websiteswhich are hosted through Amazon.com and othersappeared to be down.

We are experiencing minor hiccups but everything is moving forward on our end, the group added, without elaborating.

Malaysia government seeks to strengthen Sedition Act

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's government plans to strengthen its Sedition Act, fresh after enacting an anti-terrorism law denounced by the opposition and rights groups as a threat to civil liberties.

Ittabled on Tuesday (Apr 7) amendments to the Sedition Act 1948 for its first reading in parliament. As with the Prevention of Terrorism Bill passed early Tuesday, the amendments to the Sedition Act have been slammed by human rights activists.

Prime Minister Najib Razak had once pledged to repeal the controversial law introduced during British colonial rule to curb dissent. But the government said increased harmful and malicious comments jeopardising Malaysian ideals such as racial and religious harmony contributed to the change of heart.

However critics said the amendments silence free speech and cannot be justified."They're using a nuclear bomb to kill a mosquito or a fly. It's overdone. It's a terrible, terrible piece of legislation, terrible amendments," saidAmbiga Sreenevasan from the Movement to Abolish the Sedition Act and who is a former Bar Council president.

Under the amendments, comments on religion that could spark hostility would be an offence - one that would carry harsher penalties, including a compulsory jail term.

The government intends to remove subclauses that regulate criticisms of the government or the justice system. Still, many lawmakers are skeptical - even those from the ruling coalition.

Bung Moktar Radin is an MP from Sabah - where there has been talk of secession from Malaysia. He fears Sabahans will unwittingly be charged as Sedition Act amendments include a subclause criminalising this.

He said: "That's why I asked the minister, 'how about if the kampung (village) people put a statement on Facebook and they put 'like'. Are those people also going to be ditangkap (arrested)?' So, it's no good. "

But it's now unclear if the amendment Bill can or should even be debated. Critics argue that amendments should not have been proposed in the first place because of an ongoing court challenge on the constitutionality of the Sedition Act.

Ambiga Sreenevasan said: "Subjudice is one thing. But it's also totally disrespectful to the Federal Court. The Federal Court, the highest court in the land, is deciding whether it's constitutional and you don't care about that. You carry on and amend it. And of course it is a total waste of time, because if the Federal Court decides it is unconstitutional, the Act falls, the amendment falls."

Sedition is not murder

Lawyers criticise proposed amendments as a serious attack of freedom of speech.

PETALING JAYA: Constitutional and civil liberty lawyers have criticised the proposed amendments to the Sedition Act, 1948 as a serious attack on freedom of speech, the Malay Mail reports.

Although the amendments recently tabled in Parliament via the Sedition (Amendments) Bill 2015 contain positive aspects by seeking to decriminalise criticism of government and the administration of justice, several other provisions make unacceptable inroads into the freedom of speech and the liberty of citizens, lawyers say.

The Bill makes for a chilling read, constitutional lawyer Syahredzan Johan was quoted as saying, and amounts to the most serious attack on freedom of speech Malaysia has ever seen.

Lawyers took issue with several provisions contained in the Act.

Chief among them was the creation of a new offence.

The proposed new section 4(1A) of the Act makes it an offence for anyone to utter seditious words which cause bodily injury or damage to property and imposes a minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum of twenty years as punishment.

The loose wording of the provision has raised suspicion as to its actual intent, a senior lawyer told FMT today.

To me it appears ultimately to be targeting statements made at political rallies and other assemblies, and runs counter to the Peaceful Assembly Act, 2012, which the Prime Minister himself initiated, he said.

The fastest way to spread extremism is with the censors boot

After the Charlie Hebdo shootings, heads of state marched abreast in Paris in symbolic defence of Frances long tradition of freedom of speech. This seemed reassuring. But that image was what political consultants call optics for democracies around the world have recently seen a striking wave of anti-speech legislation.

Amid national mourning over the deaths of the Charlie Hebdo staff including five cartoonists four French police officers arrested the cartoonist Zeon for incitement, identifying as the cause of arrest anti-Zionist or antisemitic cartoons.

A law in Canada recasts antisemitism so it can include criticism of Israel, and declares that freedom of speech should not be abused; supporters cite freedom of speech on campuses as an antisemitic threat that the law should target.

Related: The NDAA: a clear and present danger to American liberty | Naomi Wolf

In Britain the Tories have been fighting for months to introduce a bill to ban extremists from UK campuses; a recent iteration casts UK colleges as monitors of acceptable speech.

In Australia a new bill mirrors parts of Americas Patriot Act. Extremist groups face social media bans in Britain, and the same push is mirrored in democracies around the world. The US National Defence Authorisation Act criminalises speech it sees as offering material support to terror groups, without defining what that might be. (Obamas lawyers confirmed that the journalist Chris Hedges could be arrested under the NDAA for interviewing a terrorist.) Since terror threats are always invoked in these campaigns to justify banning certain kinds of speech, the public in all these countries has been largely passive. Surely, after one terrorist atrocity after another, stamping out the freedom to express extremist ideas on college campuses and online is a small price to pay for safety?

But the core assumption on which these politicians, including Cameron, are selling these laws to the public, is simply wrong. The concept underlying such bills is that dangerous ideas are like a virus. You can quarantine them or kill them, like germs. But ideas are like a vast, rushing body of water that will uproot checkpoints and reconfigure a landscape if barriers are placed in its way. In fact, the history of censorship shows that it is completely useless in stamping out ideas: the fastest way to spread an idea is to censor it.

Censorship by the state (rather than by the church) is a fairly recent invention. Before 1857 it was quite difficult to get arrested for speech in England. The free speech tradition dating back to Miltons Areopagitica, if not earlier, was so rich that one had to be disturbing the Kings Peace for a speech crime to take place, or to be proven (a very high bar) to have committed sedition or blasphemy. Parliamentary debate showed a clear non-partisan bias against censorship bills, and in favour of liberty of expression.

But in 1857 the Obscene Publications Act was passed followed in 1867-8 by Regina v Hicklin. The Obscene Publications Act criminalised the intent of the author for the first time, asking: did the author intend to inflame improper passions? The Hicklin ruling extended this to criminalising a works effect on a reader: if the work could raise a blush on the cheek of a virgin if the text could deprave and corrupt those who might be vulnerable to immorality, then not only had the author committed a crime, but potentially the publisher, distributor and printer had done as well.

The Victorians have become known for their modesty; in fact, we cant know that, as they were heavily censored by ever escalating speech laws. Oxfords Ashmolean Museum is currently showing an exhibition of the work of the satirical cartoonist James Gillray; by 1857, a fair amount of his work would have been illegal to print or distribute in Britain.

What is pantheism? – Bible Questions Answered

Question: "What is pantheism?"

Answer:

Does the Bible teach pantheism? No, it does not. What many people confuse as pantheism is the doctrine of God's omnipresence. Psalm 139:7-8 declares, Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. God's omnipresence means He is present everywhere. There is no place in the universe where God is not present. This is not the same thing as pantheism. God is everywhere, but He is not everything. Yes, God is present inside a tree and inside a person, but that does not make that tree or person God. Pantheism is not at all a biblical belief.

The clearest biblical arguments against pantheism are the countless commands against idolatry. The Bible forbids the worship of idols, angels, celestial objects, items in nature, etc. If pantheism were true, it would not be wrong to worship such an object, because that object would, in fact, be God. If pantheism were true, worshipping a rock or an animal would have just as much validity as worshipping God as an invisible and spiritual being. The Bibles clear and consistent denunciation of idolatry is a conclusive argument against pantheism.

What is monism?

What is panentheism?

What is pandeism?

What does it mean that God is omnipresent?

Can monotheism be proven?

Metaphysics of Pantheism – Famous Pantheist Quotes

Pantheist Quotes / Quotations from Famous Philosophers & Scientists

We are part of Nature as a whole whose order we follow (Spinoza) All things are parts of one single system, which is called Nature; the individual life is good when it is in harmony with Nature. (Zeno) I believe in the cosmos. All of us are linked to the cosmos. So nature is my god. To me, nature is sacred. Trees are my temples and forests are my cathedrals. Being at one with nature. (Mikhail Gorbachev)

The word pantheism derives from the Greek words pan (='all') and theos (='God'). Thus pantheism means 'All is God'. In essence, pantheism holds that there is no divinity other than the universe and nature. Pantheism is a religious belief that reveres and cares for nature, a religion that joyously accepts this life as our only life, and this earth as our only paradise, if we look after it. Pantheism revels in the beauty of nature and the night sky, and is full of wonder at their mystery and power. Pantheism believes that all things are linked in profound unity ... All things interconnected and interdependent. In life and in death we humans are an inseparable part of this unity, and in realising this we can find our joy and our peace. (Harrison, Pantheism, 1999)

'All is One and Interconnected' is not a new idea, its foundation lies with the ancient philosophers. For thousands of years, philosophers have gazed at the stars and known that One thing must exist that is common to and connects the Many things within the Universe. As Leibniz profoundly says; Reality cannot be found except in One single source, because of the interconnection of all things with one another. (Leibniz, 1670) Albert Einstein also had a good understanding of humans as an inseparable part of the One, as he writes;

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe ... We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein)

Unfortunately (and most likely tragically), this knowledge of our interconnection to the Universe (Nature, God) has been lost (or is naively considered as not important) to modern day humanity. We are 'bleeding at the roots because we are cut off from the Earth' as D. H. Lawrence writes.

It is important to understand that although 'All is One and Interconnected' is a profound idea of the ancients, they did not actually know how the universe was a dynamic unity, what matter was, how the One Thing / Brahman caused and connected the many things. Recent discoveries on the properties of Space and the Wave Structure of Matter (Wolff, Haselhurst) suggests that we can understand Reality and the interconnection of all things from a foundation of science / reason rather than mysticism / intuition.

Please see links on the side of this page for the main articles which explain and solve many of the problems of postmodern Metaphysics, Physics and Philosophy from the new foundation of the Metaphysics of Space and Motion and the Wave Structure of Matter (WSM).

We greatly appreciate any comments on how we can improve this website and its content. So please feel free to write to us.

The New Yorker Borowitz Report: Ted Cruz's Constant 'Jesus' Remarks Drive Millions to Atheism Posted By Mara Ins Taracena on Mon, Apr 6, 2015 at 1:00 PM The New Yorker's Andy Borowitz published a satirical piece this morningsaying atheist leaders allege Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz's repeated "Jesus Christ" campaign remarks has driven millions of people in the U.S. to look into atheism.

From the piece:

Its been amazing, Foyler said. Were getting calls from people who are curious about atheism for the first time in their lives. And when we ask them what got them thinking about it, they all say the same thing: I just heard Ted Cruz talk."

This was a funny quote from the piece:

Here's one of my favorite incoherent quotes by Cruz. This one happened when he stood on the Senate floor for hours expressing his dislike for Obamacare in 2013. There are more listed on TIME's top 10 best Cruz quotes:

Transhumanist politics – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transhumanist politics is a political ideology that aims to improve the human condition through the use of advanced technologies.[1] Transhumanists tend to support life extension, human enhancement technologies, space exploration and space settlement, human rights, sustainable development, technogaianism, and raising the world's living standard through technology, science, education, decentralization, and just governance.[2][3]

According to James Hughes, transhumanist politics is part of a three-hundred-year-long history that began in the Age of Enlightenment when people began to advocate for democracy and individual rights and use science and technology instead of magic and superstition.[4][5] In 2012, Giuseppe Vatinno was the first politician in the world to explicitly identify as a transhumanist.[6][7] In 2012 the Longevity Party, a movement described as "100% transhumanist" by cofounder Maria Konovalenko, began to organize in Russia for building a balloted political party.[8][9][10] In 2013, io9 editor Annalee Newitz suggested building a Space Party devoted to developing space settlements and defending humanity against existential threats.[11] During the 2014 U.S. midterm elections, Gabriel Rothblatt was the first transhumanist to run for the U.S. Congress.[12]

Transhumanists believe in transforming the human condition by developing and making available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.[13] According to a 2006 study by the European Parliament, transhumanism is the political expression of the ideology that technology should be used to enhance human abilities.[1]

The political philosophies that tend to be supportive of transhumanism, according to Amon Twyman from the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, are social-futurism; techno-progressivism; techno-libertarianism; and anarcho-transhumanism.[14][unreliable source?] These philosophies collectively make up political transhumanism.[14]Democratic transhumanists, also known as technoprogressives,[15][16] tend to be in disagreement with libertarian transhumanists over the role of government in society, but both agree that technology can enhance the human condition and laws should not prevent technology-based human progress.[17] Democratic transhumanists support equal access to human enhancement technologies in order to promote social equality and to prevent technologies from furthering the divide among the socioeconomic classes.[18] Alternatively, libertarian transhumanists reject government healthcare policies that offer human enhancement technologies because they fear that any state intervention will steer or limit their choices.[19][20][17]

Riccardo Campa wrote that transhumanism can be coupled with many different political, philosophical, and religious views, and this diversity can be an asset as long as transhumanists do not give priority to their existing affiliations over their membership with organized transhumanism.[21]

In October 2014, Zoltan Istvan announced his plan to form the Transhumanist Party and run for President of the United States during the 2016 presidential election.[22] During December 2014, United Kingdom and European Union transhumanist parties began to organize, and on January 2015 the UK Transhumanist Party released the Transhumanist Party Manifesto.[23][24][unreliable source?][25]

The Transhumanist Party is a political party movement[neutrality is disputed] that is centered on the philosophy of transhumanism, including the political focus of science, medicine, and technology to enhance the human species.[26][22] Amon Twyman wrote that the strength of developing transhumanist parties lies in the grassroots actions of the thousands of transhumanist who can be organized and politically mobilized for a common goal, and the goal is not to replace technological progress with politics but to use politics to ensure technology is used to improve the world.[23][unreliable source?] In an interview with Vice magazine, David Wood stated that the UK Transhumanist Party is progressive both socially and economically and leans towards decentralization.[25]

Zoltan Istvan has announced he is running for the United States presidential election of 2016 under the Transhumanist Party.

Transhumanist writer and former University of Texas professor, John G. Messerly, wrote that he supports Istvan's entrance into politics because both the social and political environment must be supportive of transhumanism in order for humans to evolve with greater intelligence and morality.[27]

Soldier Killed in Shootout After U.S. Official's Visit

KABUL, Afghanistan A NATO soldier was killed in a shootout following a visit from U.S. officials in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday.

"We are aware that there was an exchange of gunfire involving Resolute Support service members near the provincial governor's compound in Jalalabad," U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Monica Cummings told NBC News, referring to the NATO mission in Afghanistan. "The incident took place after a senior U.S. official held a meeting with the provincial governor."

In a statement, NATO confirmed the fatality. Afghan sources told NBC News the shootout occurred between NATO and Afghan troops. Earlier, The Associated Press reported that three U.S. troops were wounded in the exchange of fire.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul denied initial reports in the Afghan media that Ambassador Michael McKinley had been present prior to the exchange of fire, and declined to provide further details.

A local police official told NBC News that NATO forces were fired on by an Afghan soldier who was then shot dead.

"[The American delegation] flew in a helicopter to the governor's house and as the delegation left the governor's compound ... an Afghan army soldier opened fire on the security team on the ground," a deputy police chief in Jalalabad said on condition of anonymity.
