Its almost showtime, Ceres. NASAs Dawn spacecraft has sent back the first images of the dwarf planet after spending about a month approaching from the mysterious little worlds dark side, officials at Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Friday.
They are on the ground, Dawns deputy principal investigator, Carol Raymond, said in an email, adding that the images will be released early next week.
Ceres is one of five dwarf planets in the solar system, and the largest member of the asteroid belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists think that studying this icy little world will shed light on the early evolution of our solar system.
Until Dawns arrival March 6, little had been known about this frigid protoplanet. Fridays images, taken from about 20,500 miles from the surface, are roughly 9.5 times better than images taken by NASAs Hubble Space Telescope in 2003 and 2004, which were once the best available shots of the dwarf planet.
Even with this improved resolution, Fridays snapshots may not be quite as impressive as earlier images taken during Dawn's approach, because they'll only show Ceres in partial daylight and will be used only for navigation purposes, scientists said.
We want to see exactly where Ceres is relative to ourselves and the star background, said UCLA planetary scientist Christopher Russell, the missions principal investigator.
A few more navigation images will be taken next week, but the high-quality images that will signal the start of the science mission will come late this month, the scientists said.
We are expecting to resolve the bright spots with the next set of images, Russell said, referring to the mysterious, luminous areas on the surface that have piqued the interest of scientists and lay folk alike.
The bright spotsmay be filled with relatively fresh material perhaps rich in water ice or salts, Russell said. But until they get a better look, theres no way to say for sure.
In the meantime, Hubbles blurry, decade-old snapshots may also still prove useful, because they will allow scientists to pick out any major changes over time.

"I think we're going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth within a decade, and I think we're going to have definitive evidence within 20 to 30 years," NASA chief scientist Ellen Stofan said Tuesday during a panel discussion on water in the universe.
"We know where to look. We know how to look," she said. "In most cases, we have the technology, and we're on a path to implementing it. And so I think we're definitely on the road."
NASA released a graphic noting that scientists have found evidence or indications of water on a number of celestial bodies, including the dwarf planet Ceres and Jupiter's moon Europa.
The Hubble Space Telescope has been key to the discoveries, NASA said in a news release.
"Scientists using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope recently provided powerful evidence that (Jupiter's moon) Ganymede has a saltwater, sub-surface ocean, likely sandwiched between two layers of ice," the agency noted.
There are some caveats involved, of course. NASA isn't talking about intelligent alien civilizations from the Alpha Quadrant; it's referring to microorganisms.
"We are not talking about little green men," Stofan said at the panel. "We are talking about little microbes."
Still, former astronaut John Grunsfeld said it's an exciting time -- and he thinks it's just a matter of time before we find life outside our solar system as well.
"I think we're one generation away in our solar system, whether it's on an icy moon or on Mars, and one generation on a planet around a nearby star," he said.

NASA has selected UT Arlington as one of four U.S. institutions to develop improved methods for oxygen recovery and reuse aboard human spacecraft, a technology the agency says is crucial to "enable our human journey to Mars and beyond."
NASA's Game Changing Development Program awarded $513,356 recently to the UT Arlington team. UT Arlington and three other teams are charged with the goal of increasing oxygen recovery to 75 percent or more.
Principal investigators on the UT Arlington project are Brian Dennis, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering; Krishnan Rajeshwar, distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the College of Science; and Norma Tacconi, a research associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.
They will design, build and demonstrate a "microfluidic electrochemical reactor" to recover oxygen from carbon dioxide that is extracted from cabin air. The prototype will be built over the next year at the Center for Renewable Energy Science and Technology, CREST, at UT Arlington.
"At the end of this 15 month Phase I project, we will demonstrate the prototype to NASA officials. If we are selected to move to Phase II, we plan to build a full-scale unit. We hope the technology will be flight tested on the International Space Station sometime in the future," Dennis said. "That's what we're really excited about and what we'll be aiming for."
Dennis said the design uses water and carbon dioxide as reactants and produces oxygen and hydrocarbon gases, such as methane. The gases can be vented into space and the oxygen is used for breathing.
"We have developed a nanocomposite electrode that speeds oxygen evolution at lower potential. That basically means it can produce more oxygen in a shorter time with less power and less reactor volume," said Dennis. "This is important since power on a spacecraft is limited because it comes from solar panels and spacecraft capacity also is limited. Things should be as compact and lightweight as possible."
Current methods of oxygen recovery used on the International Space Station, or ISS, achieve only about a 50 percent recovery rate. A better recovery rate means less oxygen needs to be stored and would free up precious cargo space on prolonged missions. With current technology, a trip to Mars would take about eight months, though scientists are working to shorten that time.

NASA's MAVEN orbiter has completed its 1,000th lap around Mars, where it has been stationed for the past few months studying the Red Planet's upper atmosphere.
MAVEN, an acronym for the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, became acquainted with Mars on Nov. 16 and ever since then has been orbiting the Red Planet trying to help scientists unlock some of the mysteries of Mars.
A high-altitude dust cloud and an aurora stretching deep into the Martian atmosphere have been two of the biggest mysteries MAVEN has observed during its time in orbit.
Since the probe has only been at work for four months, researchers said it remains unclear if it the dust cloud is temporary or a long-lasting phenomenon.
Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, may be the possible culprits for the clouds, according to NASA. Other possibilities include a collection of dust from the atmosphere or particles carried by solar wind away from the sun.
NASA said the aurora was likely caused by energetic particles from the sun. The particles were able to strike deeper into Mars' atmosphere since the Red Planet lost its protective magnetic field billions of years ago.
"The spacecraft and instruments continue to work well," Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN's principal investigator, said in a statement. "Were building up a picture of the structure and composition of the upper atmosphere, of the processes that control its behavior, and of how loss of gas to space occurs."

Tropical Cyclone Solo looks like a rooster in visible and infrared imagery taken from NASA's Aqua satellite on April 10. Solo formed in the Coral Sea and is giving several islands something to crow about, because it has triggered watches already in Solomon Islands.
In the Solomon Islands today, April 10, a tropical disturbance watch was in effect for Rennell and Bellona, Temotu, Makira, Central, Guadalcanal and Malaita. For additional information visit the Solomon Islands Meteorological Services website at: http://www.met.gov.sb/. There are currently no warnings in effect for New Caledonia, but because Solo is expected to move toward the island, warnings are expected. On April 10, when Aqua passed over the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, two instruments aboard gathered data on the newborn tropical cyclone. In visible imagery from the MODIS or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument aboard Aqua, the center of the storm was circled by powerful thunderstorms, and a band of thunderstorms extended from the southeast out from the storm to the northeast, resembling a neck and head of a rooster. Another band of thunderstorms wrapping into the center from the northwest to the northern quadrant of the storm resembled a feathered tail.
The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite saw cloud top temperatures as cold as 210 kelvin (-63.1F/-81.6C) in powerful thunderstorms circling Solo's center and in bands of thunderstorms east and northwest of the center. Previous NASA research has shown that thunderstorms that high (and that cold) have the ability to generate heavy rainfall.
On April 10 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Solo's maximum sustained winds had already reached 45 knots (51.7 mph/83.3 kph). It was centered near 16.4 south latitude and 160.6 east longitude, about 484 nautical miles (557 miles/896 km) northwest of Noumea, New Caledonia. It is moving to the south at 13 knots (15 mph/24 kph) and is expected to turn to the southeast.
Solo's winds are expected to peak near 55 knots (63.2 mph/102 kph) on April 11, before weakening as a result of increasing vertical wind shear when it interacts with a deep mid-latitude trough (elongated area) of low pressure and cooler sea surface temperatures. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expect those two factors to dissipate the storm by April 14.

The NASA Student Launch challenge has been rescheduled to April 11, due to weather concerns. More than 30 high school, college and university teams from across the nation will launch student-built rockets during the 15thanniversary of this event.
All launches will take place at Bragg Farms in Toney, Alabama, minutes north of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. Opening ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. CDT with guest speakers from NASA Marshall, Orbital ATK and others.
The first round of rocket launches will begin immediately after the opening ceremony and continue throughout the day, until the final launch is complete. In the event of rain, the launch event is tentatively scheduled to move to April 12 weather permitting.
The NASA Centennial Challenges program, new sponsor of Student Launch, will present its prizes at the launch site April 11 -- should any teams complete their specified requirements. Orbital ATK, the challenge sponsor, will announce its preliminary award winners during the awards banquet at 6:30 p.m., April 10, at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The awards banquet is open to the media. Real-time coverage of the banquet and awards presentation will be provided on the NASA Student Launch Twitter account -- @NASA_Launchfest.
The winning team competing for the Orbital ATK top prize will be announced in the days to come, once post-flight data has been verified.
Student Launch requires teams to design and construct high-powered rockets and ground support equipment and launch scientific payloads, all while meeting real-world NASA criteria.
Student Launch is managed by Marshalls Academic Affairs Office and supported by the NASA Office of Education, the Human Explorations Operations Mission Directorate, NASA Centennial Challenges and Orbital ATK Propulsion Systems of Promontory, Utah. The Centennial Challenges program is managed at Marshall and is supported by the Space Technology Mission Directorate.

From space, Tropical Cyclone Joalane's beauty is beyond compare. NASA's Aqua satellite captured a near-visible image of the storm moving east of Rodrigues Island in the Southern Indian Ocean.
On April 10 at 09:20 UTC (5:20 a.m. EDT), the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured a beautiful image of Tropical Cyclone Joalane that showed a tightly wound tropical cyclone, still at hurricane-strength. Strong thunderstorms circled the cloud-filled eye and extended in a band of thunderstorms south of the center.
At the same time from Aqua, another instrument called the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder, or AIRS, gathered temperature data on the storm using infrared light. The AIRS instrument revealed that the thunderstorms circling the eye and in a band south of the center were high in the troposphere with cloud top temperatures as cold as 210 kelvin (-63.1F/-81.6C). Previous NASA research has shown that thunderstorms that high (and that cold) have the ability to generate heavy rainfall.
As Aqua passed overhead, Tropical Cyclone Joalane's maximum sustained winds were near 75 knots (86 mph/139 kph). Joalane's eye was centered near 18.2 south latitude and 66.3 east longitude. That put the center of the storm about 247 miles (397.5 km) east of Rodrigues and 595 miles (957.5 km) east of Port Louis, Mauritius. Rodrigues Island is about 348 miles (560 kilometers) east of Mauritius.
Joalane was generating rough seas with maximum significant wave heights to 30 feet (9.1 meters). As a result, there was a "Strong wind and high wave warning" in effect for Rodrigues Island. According to the Mauritius Meteorological Services, the Lemongrass weather station on the island had received 15.6 mm (0.6 inches) of rainfall since April 9, and the Advanced Canon weather station received 14.3 mm (0.5 inches). The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) forecast calls for Joalane to move in a southerly direction over the next several days and weaken. JTWC expects the storm will become extra-tropical by April 14.

UTICA, NY - You're never too young to learn about nano- technology. And today, Mohawk Valley Community College kicked off a preview of its Nano Days Celebration and invited some local youngsters.
Nano Days is a nationwide celebration of all things nano. What is nano? Well, simply put, its something that is very small.
Local elementary schools participated in today's event with educational programs, and hands on interactive demonstrations.
Some of the activities include experiments in heat transfer, completing an electrical circuit, polarizing light, and water repelling materials just to name a few.
Bob Decker, Director Engineering Technology at MVCCC, says Its to stimulate interest in science. To get themthinking in terms of if they see something say what could we do with that. What's the idea, what's the next big thing. If I saw that, oh, I could do that, I could do this with that."
Nano Days is open to the public on Saturday in MVCC's Technology Building.

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology President Heather Wilson announced the universitys next provost and vice president for academic affairs will be Demitris Kouris, Ph.D., former engineering dean at Texas Christian University.
He will succeed Richard Sinden, Ph.D., who has served as interim provost since Duane Hrncir, Ph.D., retired in September.
Kouris joins Mines from Texas Christian University where he has been a member of the faculty of the Departments of Engineering and Physics and served as dean of the College of Science and Engineering.
Dr. Kouris will be a good fit for Mines and will make us an even greater team, said Wilson. He has had a successful career educating engineers at Arizona State, the University of Wyoming and Texas Christian University. He has also been deeply involved in stewarding research, including a stint at the National Science Foundation as a program manager.
I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Mines family and a university where synergy between science, engineering and the humanities provides the young Hardrockers with a complete education, an invaluable asset in todays rapidly evolving world. Dr. Wilson has assembled an exceptional leadership team in a short time, and I am honored to become its latest member, Kouris said.
During his time at TCU, Kouris championed the student-scholar model, a concept that emphasizes preparation for life-long learning, and a broad and deep education including in disciplines other than ones own. At TCU he led the creation of the TCU Idea Factory, which has become a catalyst for a number of unique educational experiences in entrepreneurship and innovation.
Before joining TCU, Kouris served as program director of the Nano and Biomechanics Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Working for NSF provided him with a valuable experience relative to the research funding structure of the federal government.
Kouris served as head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming from 2001 to 2009 and as a faculty member with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University from 1987 until 2001. While at the University of Wyoming he established an undergraduate international option in mechanical engineering and is a strong advocate for programs that promote international experience for students.
He was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He received his diploma in civil engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1982. After a brief period working for his fathers construction company, he left for further studies in the United States where he received a M.S. degree in civil engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1984, and a Ph.D. in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University in 1987. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Gov. Susana Martinez has signed legislation that makes it easier to get information about pricing, rates of medical complications and re-admissions at specific hospitals.
The law requires the state Health Department by January 2017 to post hospital-specific cost and quality of care information on an easily searchable website that consumers can access free of charge.
Mike Donnelly, health advocacy director for AARP New Mexico, said information on hospital pricing and health outcomes would help members decide where to go for care.
About a third of our membership is below Medicare eligibility age, and they are trying to make prudent decisions on health care on quality terms and cost differentials, Donnelly said.
Hospitals and health facilities already are required to report an extensive list of information to the state Department of Health, including medical and practice outcomes and health-system costs. But the department has not been allowed to present the information in a way that identifies a hospital or other type of health facility.
Under the legislation, the health secretary will appoint a committee to recommend how to carry out the required provisions.
New Mexico Hospital Association President and CEO Jeff Dye said his organization will work with the committee.
The legislation was a committee substitute for SB 323, sponsored by Sen. Mark Moores, R-Albuquerque, and SB 474, sponsored by Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino, D-Albuquerque, and Sen. Sander Rue, R-Albuquerque.
A legislative impact report for SB474 said the health department currently collects the amount listed on the hospital bill. However, the actual price a health plan ends up paying is not collected, and the department will have to develop a system for doing so.

He bends down to remove a bail from the stumps, enacting Law 16(3) of cricket: "after the call of Time, the bails shall be removed".
Father Time is now on Twitter, as the official account of Lord's. And on Thursday night he Tweeted amid the marketing messages to mark the mortality of a great man: "Very sad to hear of the passing of Richie Benaud, a true great in the game of cricket, my thoughts are with his family".
It was one of many farewells to Benaud in the land where he began his commentating career after Australia's 1956 tour to England he stayed behind to train as a presenter with the BBC, then worked as a reporter at the News of the World. His first BBC radio commentary came in 1960, followed by his first TV appearance three years later.

The news of his death broke after midnight in the UK, but some marked it immediately.
England coach Peter Moores said Benaud "sums up all that is great about our sport. He was a true gentleman.
"He made heroes of the players he commentated on and his enthusiasm for the sport made you want to get off the sofa and play." In the morning English Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke said it was "a very sad day".
"Cricket has lost perhaps its greatest advocate and someone who was a true giant of the modern game," he said. "He will always, above all, be remembered as one of cricket's most influential and authoritative voices; a supremely gifted broadcaster, journalist and author.

Student Spencer Caminsky, 17, said: I think UK politics has been significantly worse off for having a coalition, as majoritarian governments get a lot more reform done than any coalition could.
Take the Blair government in 1997: their confident and enthusiastic leader, huge promises for reform and incredible backing from the mass media gave them a huge majority come the General Election. In the end, they won with a 179 majority in the Commons.
This was incredible for Labour, allowing them to not only pass virtually any law they wanted due to their power in Parliament, but the absolute majority also allowed them to keep virtually every promise they made to the electorate. From Education Action Zones and the Education Maintenance Allowance to benefit lower-class students in the education system, to massive constitutional reform in the Constitutional Reform Act, in devolution and the compliance with the Human Rights Act, the electorate was kept happy and political enthusiasm was on a tremendous high.
