Comets Tripped up by the Senators in a Shootout

April 11, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - It took extra hockey, a shootout to be exact, but the Utica Comets fell to the Binghamton Senators 3-2 Friday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Brandon DeFazio (1-0-1) and Hunter Shinkaruk (1-0-1) scored for the Comets, while Joacim Eriksson made 35 saves in the loss. Cal O'Reilly did not register for a point for the first time in 14-games, which is a 2014-15 season high in the American Hockey League.

After a scoreless first period, the Comets wasted little time in the second period. Off of a face-off to the left of Senators' goaltender Chris Driedger, Alexandre Grenier found Shinkaruk all alone in the slot for the game's first goal just 50 seconds into the period.

Cashing in on a Comets turnover, Cole Schneider ripped a shot over the glove of Eriksson to tie the game at 1-1.

With 8:13 left the Comets re-took the lead once again. On the power play, Alex Friesen sprung Brendan Gaunce and DeFazio in on a two-on-one. Gaunce sauced a pass over a sprawled out Senators' defender to DeFazio who one-timed it home. The goal was DeFazio's first goal on the road since November 21 vs. Rochester.

Skating four-on-four just over three minutes later, the game was once again knotted. A two-on-one opportunity for the Senators. Eriksson turned aside the original shot from Derek Grant, but Buddy Robinson was there to pop the rebound into the empty net.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. The Senators scored in the second round, and that is all they would need to seal up the win.

The Comets will wrap up their three-in-three weekend tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Syracuse Crunch at the Utica Memorial Auditorium at 3pm.

Workington Comets confident ahead of League Cup clashes

Last updated at 11:18, Friday, 10 April 2015

Workington Comets season steps up a gear this weekend with a daunting League Cup double-header.

Laura Morgan

The west Cumbrian speedway clubs first competitive action starts with a tough trip to reigning Premier League and League Cup champions Edinburgh Monarchs tonight (7.30pm start) and they then journey to Glasgow on Sunday (3pm start).

However, Comets will be in confident mood after retaining the Ian Thomas Shield at the weekend thanks to a narrow victory, which was decided by a run-off, against Newcastle Diamonds.

Owner Laura Morgan said: Its a really tough start. You have got to start somewhere and sometimes its better to get the toughest out of the way.

At Redcar we had a good win and last weekend saw some brilliant racing from both sides, so we have got some track time under our belts.

Although Premier League glory remains the number one target, Morgan is also taking the League Cup seriously.

Comets reached the semi-final stage last season but bowed out after an 85-97 loss on aggregate to Peterborough.

Morgan added: The league is the number one we are looking at but the League Cup is definitely something we are targeting.

Comets defense helps out pitchers after falling behind to Cards early

Published: Saturday, 4/11/2015 - Updated: 17 hours ago

BY STEVE JUNGA BLADE SPORTS WRITER

A win is a win, so Genoa wont worry about the lack of style points from Fridays 9-5 nonleague high school baseball victory at Cardinal Stritch.

The Comets shook off a rough start to stay perfect at 5-0, using a key six-run rally in the top of the sixth inning after falling behind 4-0 early.

Kyle Edwards was the difference, coming in to relieve starting pitcher Matt Aumiller, who had a shaky outing before exiting after two innings.

Edwards worked the final five innings, allowing just one run on five hits to earn the victory.

My role is to basically come in and be the inning two or three guy whenever we need it, and thats what I kind of fell into today, Edwards said. Matt [Aumiller] kind of struggled a little bit. Hes a great pitcher, but he just didnt have it today.

I came in and just threw strikes. Im not going to overpower anyone. I just try to throw strikes, mix it up a little bit, and let the defense make plays.

Getting the win is all that matters. This is a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

Markstrom and Sanguinetti Named AHL All-Stars

April 9, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets, in conjunction with American Hockey League, have announced the goaltender Jacob Markstrom and defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti, have been named to 2014-15 AHL Second All-Star Team, as voted by coaches, players and media in each of the league's 30 member cities.

Jacob Markstrom set the tone early for what would be a memorable 2014-15 season in Utica, posting three consecutive shutouts from Oct. 17-25 and earning CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month honors for October. Markstrom is now second in the AHL with a 1.91 goals-against average and third with a .932 save percentage while posting a 19-7-2 record for the Comets, who continue to battle for the best record in the AHL after missing the playoffs a year ago. Markstrom, who has allowed two goals or fewer in 21 of his 28 starts, has also made three NHL appearances with Vancouver this season, and was co-MVP of the 2015 AHL All-Star Game.

In his seventh professional season, Bobby Sanguinetti has set personal bests with 16 goals and a plus-22 rating for Utica in 2014-15 to earn a selection as a Second Team AHL All-Star, his first career postseason nod. One of 10 players with double-digit goals in a Comets uniform this season, Sanguinetti has contributed six game-winning tallies - most among AHL defensemen - with three of those coming in overtime. The former first-round draft choice (2006 by the New York Rangers) has a total of 38 points in 58 games for Utica.

The complete 2014-15 AHL All-Star Teams are as follows:

REPORT: This billionaire hedge funder is quietly bankrolling Ted Cruz's campaign

Hedge fund magnate Robert Mercer, a reported billionaire, is the "main donor" bankrolling the super PACs supportingSen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) presidential campaign, The New York Times reported Friday.

According to The Times, Mercer, "a reclusive Long Islander who started I.B.M. and made his fortune using computer patterns to outsmart the stock market, emerged this week as a key bankroller" of Cruz's "surprisingly fast campaign start."

Cruz made headlines on Wednesday when the super PACs reported raising what Bloomberg described as a stunning $31 million in just a week.

"Cruz's presidential effort is getting into the shock-and-awe fundraising business," Bloomberg's Mark Halperin wrote. "Even in the context of a presidential campaign cycle in which the major party nominees are expected to raise more than $1.5 billion, Cruz's haul is eye-popping, one that instantly raises the stakes in the Republican fundraising contest."

Cruz's campaign was not expected to be so well funded, especially because the firebrand senator has repeatedly railed against the Republican establishment and "crony capitalism." Other presidential contenders like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) appear to be closer to establishment-friendly GOP donors.

Trevor Potter,a Republican campaign finance lawyer, told The Times that donors like Mercer are changing the landscape of electoral politics.

"It just takes a random billionaire to change a race and maybe change the country," Potter said. "That's what's so radically different now."

The paper reported that Mercer, who declined to comment, has not said anything publicly about his financial support for Cruz or why he's backing the senator's presidential campaign, which launched on March 23.According to The Daily Beast, Mercer's hedge fund, Renaissance Technologies, "recently faced an unflattering congressional investigation, the results of which indicated that it used complex and unorthodox financial structures to dramatically lower its tax burden."

Cruz's campaign, required to be independent of the super PACs, previously told Business Insider that it was more than excited by the report indicating the committees were flush with money.

"We are thrilled by the report!" his spokeswoman said.
